Tacoma PreRunner 4 cyl.
Strength:
Great gas mileage and plenty of power from the 4 cylinder. Well designed, both inside and out, as well as under the hood. Bucket seats are very comfortable. Good sound system.
Weakness:
Haven't found any yet. $20,000. I strongly recommend this truck. It's well-built, tough, reliable and looks great. I doubt I'll buy any other brand of truck or car in the future. I plan on driving this truck for the next 10 years, and I know it's going to last. Similar Products Used: Chevy S-10, Nissan. The others don't even come close to my Toyota in quality, power, or looks. |

Toyota Tacoma
Strength:
Reliability is the strongest point on this truck! I have 140,000 on it now and the only thing i have replaced on it is the brakes, oil and tune-ups. The 4 bannger is still strong and tight. The truck has never let me down.
Weakness:
The one thing I dont like about the truck is that the steering wheel shakes too much. It's not from the tires, it just feels like its not mounted solid to the truck. I would highly recommend this truck! You pay a little more in the begining for it, but it pays off in the long run. That extra $1500 for the Toyota is well worth it knowing the truck will not let you down and you will not have any repair bills after 60K miles like the competiters. Tacoma PreRunner 4cyl
Strength:
Gutsy for a 4 Cylinder, Great looks, Get the 4x4 size and power without the 4x4 insurance bill, and as with all Toyota products RELIABILITY.
Weakness:
Since purchased 8 months ago I have had the tires rotated and balanced 5 times. I have a problem vibration and keeping tire pressure. I first thought it was my driving style but then made adjustments with no solution. Dealer included a Toyota tonneau cover and it is one of the most poorly designed units I have seen. Has major problems shifting around then with the vibration wearing away the paint below the rear window. I have had the dealer reinstall the cover twice before throwing it away. With a standard cab, all PreRunner options, dealer installed alarm, dealer installed fender flares painted to match, with dealer installed side steps painted to match, dealer installed window tint, and the dealer installed tonneau cover I paid a total of $17,500. I was aware of the fact that this particular truck was on the lot for 56 days and was obviously overloaded with dealer options. The sticker read $20,685. I would recommend this truck to any person looking at the standard 4x2 and the folks not wanting the 4x4 insurance bill. Tacoma 4x4 Ext Cab SR5
Strength:
1 heck of a good looking truck !!!, Great reliability, Great Gas Mileage on my 5 speed (20-22mpg), good power from the V6. I have never had any problems with this vehicle from day 1. Head light power is excellent, comfort of split bucket seats is excelent, dash is layed out great, 5 speed is smooth and effortless, I have only hauled a trailer once, but it hauled it with no problems.
Weakness:
Premium sound system is weak, could be much better. Truck does not handel well when I have more than 2 people in the truck. Maybe the suspension is set to soft? I would recomend this vehicle to anyone. Paid $25,650 (July 1998). My wife and I are getting a bigger truck this year because were planning for kids. I hate to sell my baby, but the back seats are too small for young children. If anyone is interested in my truck please let me know. I take extremely good care of my trucks. No dents, door dings,scratches...etc... Always follow regular scheduled maintenance schedules. Regular wax jobs, interior carpet and seat shampoos. Here is my web site with pictures. I will be selling around August time frame. mnicholson22@hotmail.com Similar Products Used: Ford Ranger 4x4 ext cab. I like the Tacoma 4x4 ext cab much better than the Ranger. Strength:
Looks, V6 power. Extended cab room.
Weakness:
Interior. Horribly uncomfortable seats, have to 'reach' too far for shifter and steering wheel with the seat all the way back. Hydraulic clutch very hard to get used to on initial take off. Paid full MSRP but got way over trade in value on trade in. Would recommend spending a lot of time test driving this truck before purchasing. Lots of modification need to made for taller drivers to sit comfortably into the truck. Dealing with Toyota Salesmen and Customer Service is something I never want to do again. Tacoma SR5 Pre-Runner 4X2
Strength:
Reliable and great looks!!!!!
Weakness:
I hated this truck with a passion. I was my third new Toyota truck. I tried to reain loyal but...Never again. I should have got the 4X4. Expensive vehicle. The SR5 lacked the attention to detail that I used to like about Toyotas. The clock on the SR5 is positioned behind the 2 oclock position behind the steering wheel. Not only had to take eyes of the road but had to lower head and/or remove hand from steering wheel to check time. After 30 minutes in the driver seat I felt like I was being dumped forward. I tried to dismiss it but every time I would drive to Columbia I would get that uncomfortable feeling. The radio for the SR5 must have come out of a Cracker Jack box. I live in Charlotte and could barely get any stations. The speakers must have cost Toyota $1.00 for the whole set. The V-6 still did not have enough power. Toyota was rude when I asked them if I could add a TRD locking diff to the truck. They told me it could not be done. The truck was horrible on a gravel road. I was afraid to turn around because it would get stuck easily. The cruise control was terrible. Dealer told me I could not get an under-the-rail bedliner. I had to consider having the top cut off of my bedliner to accomidate a truck cover. I could go on and on about why I hate Toyota trucks but I will stop. I now have a 1997 Ford F150 4X4 that I like a lot. Terrible gas mileage. $24,000 was the list. I would strongly discourage anyone from buying a late model Tacoma. Overpriced, overpriced and overpriced. Toyota lost focus on the 99 4X2 SR5 Tacoma Prerunner. You know, a truck that "looks like it can go off road should at least be able to have some fun without fear of getting stuck in the slightest of dips in the road. I am a common breed of truck buyer. I like features and value. Attention to detail is important to me. By the way I have owned nothing but Toyotas and Nissans ever since I was old enough to think for myself. I've seen Toyota and Nissan at their best and now I am seeing them loose reputation. It is with sadness that I changed my loyality to Chevy and Ford. What a turnaround. I love my new Corvette and my Ford 4x4. Similar Products Used: I've had 3 trucks in my life and all have been Toyotas. Too many Toyotas and Nissans. I got rid of em all. |

Tacoma PreRunner TRD
Strength:
It has good look and still is small enough to fit in the garage. It's powerful and strong enough to satisfy hauling and towing needs for most of us.
Weakness:
I've got a lemon and the dealer and Toyota won't take responsibility for it. Front suspension has been vibrating at high speed ever since delivery. It took two balancing and one alignment within two weeks of delivery to reduce vibration to an acceptable level, but it gets worse very time I rotate (and balance) the tires. I'm getting rid of this lemon because it obviously has a defect suspension. I paid invoice plus $100. It's still a good truck if yours is not defective. I made the mistake of special ordering it and this is what I got. My advise is test drive, test drive, and more test drive. Similar Products Used: Since Toyota is skipping some popular features; and the competition has improved quality and features, they all are potential alternative. It's time Toyota redesign that dated and ugly sliding rear window, and fog lights should have been standard equipment on this level of truck. |

Good sight-lines, easy to reach controls.

Poor X-cab layout. I have 9K miles on this truck and found the power for this 2.4L engine and 5 speed to be good and gas mileage hovering around 30MPG. Similar Products Used: Mazda B2200. Tacoma is more refined. |
