Too Tall
Model Reviewed: /XtraCab SR5 TRD

Strength:

Durable--can withstand a lot of abuse. Fit and finish is excellent--no rattles or squeaks. The V6 motor has more than enough power. Aside from routine maintenance, I don't have to give this truck a second thought.

Weakness:

Plain interior--but still made from high quality materials. Harsh ride on pavement. People always want to borrow it or drive it.

Very reliable. Excellent fit and finish. No squeaks or rattles. Traded in a Chevy S10 for it--smartest thing I ever did. This thing is practically bulletproof. I am 6-6 and have plenty of head and leg room. If you don't need a full size truck, this is the one to get. For a truck is has very good acceleration and gas mileage. In trips over fifty miles it can be uncomfortable, even with the bucket seats.

Similar Products Used:

Ford Ranger, Dodge Dakota, Nissan Frontier, Ford F-150. The Tacoma was the hands down winner.

Model Reviewed: Double Cab

Strength:

Roominess, reliability, my wife likes driving it(hated my Tahoe with 6 in. suspension lift and 33 in mudders), price, gas mileage

Weakness:

rear end jumps when letting out brake, other than that I don't think there is a weakness. Those of you who complain about the digital clock get real and look at the one on your wrist.

At first I was skeptical about buying the 2.7 4cyl. coming out of the Chevy Tahoe. But I am pleasantly suprised and the gas mileage is great. I have had no problems at all with my truck, and having just gotten the 30K mile maintenance done, the truck has performed outstanding. As you can guess I put alot of miles on a vehicle(purchased mine in Dec 2000). This truck is the answer to all my problems, family, mileage, reliability. I haven't had the oppurtunity to tow anything yet but a boat is in the future. Not worrying about throughing things in the back is also an added bonus. I would never think of putting dirty stuff in the back of my old Tahoe. I don't believe I could have made a better decision than when I purchased my first Tacoma. Though I must be honest and say my first choice was the Tundra V8. From the drivers advantage it was great, but the back seat of the extended cab was so uncomfortable I wouldn't even think of putting my 8 year old in the back for any length of time. If Toyota will fix the back seat of the Tundra I will probably trade in my double cab but until then I will keep on going and going and going. If you drive at all you need to be driving the Tacoma and if you like the truck but don't want a big car payment skip the V6 and get the 2.7 4 cyl. it has all the power you need who cares if you can get to 60 quicker. Not only that but you will get about 2 MPG better. You can not get a better truck for the money. Also if you belong to a bank or Credit Union call and ask them if they have a preferred dealers list. I did and it saved me the price of haggling since I payed only 200.00 over invoice, straight up.

Model Reviewed: Prerunner trd

Strength:

Great look & ergonimics.
Awesome build quality.
Strong responsive V6.
Great traction even with 2wd.
Chicks dig it.

Weakness:

Rough unsettling ride - say no to TRD.
Horn sounds like a Tercel - beep beep.
Messy oil filter location - interferes with skidplate.
Pay extra for otherwise standard features.

Great looking truck that is put together very well. This vehicle will definately get you far back into the woods or mountains and back in style. The exterior muscular look with the well laid out interior ergonimics create the perfect package. The V6 never slacks, just give it gas and go. Even with passengers or a full bed it is strong. The automatic does upshift on hills sometimes causing it to need to downshift shortly after to keep up speed - this gets old when going up mountains. The 2wd models have great traction in ice and snow - it is probably the agressive tires, but I've been in other 4wd brands that didn't stick as well, so it is probably vehicle design related. I enjoy driving it around town, being able to see over the other vehicles. One of the only major weaknesses is the ride quality. On long trips over uneven pavement you are treated harshly. I hate going on trips over an hour because of the poor rough ride. This may be due to the stiff TRD package. No matter how many times I get alignments and balancing the front end vibrates through the steering wheel - it may just be something about Toyota trucks that I will have to live with.

Similar Products Used:

Ford Ranger - no comparison (but rides better)
Ford F150 - Good truck (not as nimble - but rides better)
Nissan Frontier - Good truck (not as manly - but rides better)
Chevy - little expereince with brand (but rides better)
