Model Reviewed: reg cab 4x4

Strength:

Good fuel economy. Excellent quality. Worry free ownership. Exceptional off-road capabilities (took it off-road the first day I bought it. Looks good with dirt all over)

Weakness:

Poor clock placement - ask your passenger the time to be safe.
Transmission whine in lower gears (not really a weakness, just being objective)

The truck sold itself. No dealer hasles. The best buying experience I ever had. I needed a vehicle badly because my used Honda Civic died (never another Honda, second time I've seen one die)
I was going to buy a Jeep Cherokee (mostly sentimental reasons since Jeep is replacing it with the Liberty), but my salesman whipped out the 2001 Consumer Reports on new vehicles. Never saw so many black dots by a vehicle (all Jeeps were rated as "crap")
Then he showed me the Tacoma's rating - all red circles...Very good.
I left the dealer with the black floor model with 45 miles on the odometer and a huge smile on my face.

Model Reviewed: Tacoma PreRunner V6 TRD

Strength:

V6, Rear Locker, I like the room, Nice beefy ride

Weakness:

Stiff suspension for non-willing passengers (girlfriends) and not-so-good 60 to 80mph acceleration (then again, I ride a motorcycle so...).

I like the V6, it's really beefy and my friends all comment how my truck "has guts". That's even with the automatic transmission... However, I don't really think that toyota interior design is up to part with Lexus, Honda, or Acura ... in general. I wish the seats weren't so cheap and that the clock didn't cost 80$ (which I said "HELL NO!!" to).

I had a popping noise in the rear, turns out the spare tire holster was loose and was popping up into the bed when I made hard right turns. My dealer took care of that problem pretty well in my opinion.

Right now I'm in the process of selling this truck to get a 2001 XCab 4x4 V6 w/ TRD (maybe even a Limited model?)... Manual transmission this time, I'm sick of automatic.

Overall, you can't really go wrong with a Toyota. My '81 Toyota Longbed lasted me until 1999 and it was STILL RUNNING when I sold it. That thing had over 200,000 miles on it and NO engine rebuilds. I just had to do the usual rebuild carburator, fix old pipes, pumps... nothing big. That is why I buy Toyota trucks and will continue to buy Toyota trucks.

Strength:

None

Weakness:

Dealer replaced tires at 8000k, brakes at 29k, air pressure (yep, thats what they said) but cant fix high speed braking vibration. they offered to buy it back, but I would loose a ton of equity. Dash loose second time, leaks, rough tranny from 1st to 2nd, etc just like everyone else states. Paint flaws, and carpet was replaced.

Great...It drives great (except for weaknesses-See below)
Love off road handling/on road. Freeway-long trips are great!
Not bad milage. Wish they could isolate problem and FIX it.
Hope they can fix it!!

Model Reviewed: V6 SR5 Xtra Cab Auto

Strength:

Engine, looks, Fit and finish, and this is where it stops.

Weakness:

Vibrations from drivetrain, seats are the worst I have seen in an upscale model, clock, radio, and ride. Especially the rear suspension.

This is a follow up review. My truck experienced driveline vibrations and the dealer tried to fix it but could not. I went through arbitration with them and it did no good. They said it is the nature of the truck.

The biggest gripe with the truck is the rear suspension or lack of. You cant haul anything with this truck because it bottoms out. I loaded my motorcycle which is450 lbs and went to Alabama and on slightly rough highway the rear suspension felt like it hit the concrete. This truck is useless for any type of load. It also did this with the camper top. Totally unacceptable for a truck. I read alot of good reviews about this truck but Toyota had a long way to go in the ride and hauling department.

I sold the truck and bought a 2001 F-150 supercab 4WD. There is no comparison between the two. The Ford rides and drives so much better it is not even close. The Ford is like being in a Limosine compared to the Toyota and I only paid 2000 more for the Ford. Interior noise and room in the Ford are 1st rate and the fit and finish are very good for an American truck. Sorry guys but the ones of you who say the newer Fords are crap are justifying spending too much money for the Toyota.

I have owned 3 Toyota vehicles in the past and overall I do like them but the Tacoma has a long way to go. The biggest strength of the Tacama is the engine and great looks but that is where it ends. I tried very hard to remain satisfied with my Tacoma but when I 1st test drove the F150 I knew as soon as I drove it off the lot I was going to buy it.

Model Reviewed: Tacoma D-Cab TRD

Strength:

Reliability, luxury, good looks, with headers and supercharger great acceleration and sound. I've found I can beat many stock sports cars easily.

Weakness:

Weak dash...needs to be redesigned. Put the clock where you can see it. Come down on the price

I think it's a great truck off and on-road. I strongly suggest getting the Limited b/c you get such a better interior. I have been happy with this truck and would have kept my 1999 if the dealership hadn't wrecked it while doing some routine warranty work fixing the mysterious rattling dash. Unfortunately, the 2001 has inherited the rattling dash. I found in my 1999 that a piece of packing styrofoam (not the hard white stuff but the soft). Wedge that b/w the window and dash and it forces the loose piece away from whatever it's hitting. Other than that, I've loved my Tacoma. I've added the TRD headers and Supercharger. If you like speed and sound, it's well worth it.

Model Reviewed: Toyota Ext cab SR5

Strength:

Looks great, lots of power, comfortable and is perfect (I got every option I could)

Weakness:

The only problme I have had is with the alarm system and keyless entry. Sometimes it doesn't unlock even though it makes the beep like it did. No big deal.

This is one hell of a truck. It drives great, handles great, a lot of power for a 6 cyl. If you are wanting a dependable truck that looks great and holds its value Toyota is the way to go. I had an 89 ext 4x4 that I crashed. It had over 175,000 miles when I crashed it but I still got $7500 out from the insurance!

This new one is holding true to the Toyota name. I have over 1500 miles on it already and have not had any problems. The dealership I bought it from is great and they have called me at least 4 times making sure I am still happy with it. Check them out, you will be happy www.applewaytoyota.com they are in Spokane WA.

Takes 5 minutes longer to drive to work than my GT

I've owned 5 Rangers and a Mustang GT, all brand new. I bought this Tacoma used(20K miles). After 2 weeks of driving, I know that this is the highest quality vehicle that I have ever purchased! The motor runs like a digital clock; which is good since the truck didn't come with one. Go figure! The on-road ride is a little bit soft, but the off-road ride is smooth.

I kept the GT for the on-road ride!

Model Reviewed: Tacoma 4X2 Regular Cab

Strength:

I like everything about this truck. I put on 100 ~ 200 miles a day. I just like plain-jane simple stuff that's quality built. I'm don't go for frills or do-dads that dress a truck up. I'm not trying to make a "fashion statement".

Weakness:

I haven't found any yet, but I'm pretty adaptable.

I wanted the cheapest stock Toyota truck I could find, but they're rare. The dealers always order them with stuff like air-conditioning, automatic transmission, stereo system, etc. Well, this is the first vehicle I've owned with air and auto and I must say, I'm impressed. It rides pretty much like a car. Power is great. Gets an honest 25 MPG. Looks terrific! And the price..... I paid less than $14000. I didn't want (or need) a full size truck. I couldn't be happier.

Strength:

Lots of leg room. Very comfortable. Could carry at least 4 adults. Great for off roading.

Weakness:

The clock is badly placed.

This truck has a lot of horsepower including the supercharger. You could never get stuck if you tried. The interior looks great with oak. The exterior is awesome with the mitallic color. People always look at my car when driving by. Worth it if you get leg room in the back and lose some bed room.
