Toyota Tundra Trucks | Vans

DESCRIPTION

Available in Regular cab, Double Cab and CrewMax styles, the Tundra also features three bed lengths, three engines, three wheelbases and a choice of 4X2 or 4X4 configurations.

The Tundra offers three engines and three cab sizes. Handling is relatively responsive, but the ride with the TRD package is stiff. The 5.7-liter V8 is very powerful. The tailgate is easy to raise and lower. A new 4.6-liter V8 replaced the old 4.7-liter for 2010.

Strength:

Decent fuel milage compared to american breeds. Very good interior layout. Very good looking design. Mechanical layout is the best i have seen on any truck(transfer case is well protected, parking brake line is protected behind rear axle, exhaust pipes off engine well gaurded, etc) This thing can out preform any stock 1/2, gauranteed. Going 100km on packed gravel put it down into 2nd let off the gas and gun it again it will spin and start to fish tail, it is unbelievable. The warranty(100000km).

Weakness:

The lights are so damn bright, when i am on low beams people flash, this happens quite often, This is actually a good thing. But that is all there is wrong with it, serious.

If you want a truck that works hard. dont look here. This truck was designed for traveling and light work. If you like compact trucks and are having trouble if you want upgrade to a 1/2 ton, look no further. This is currently the best truck on the market. It is a perfect vehicle for traveling, running errands. If you live in the city, like owning full size trucks get this truck and do the world a favour.

I come from a farm wher Toyota is viewed as jap crap, and american breeds are the way to go. But my neighbour owns a T100 and i have rode in it and he and my son convinced me to go to Toyota for a test drive. And i came home with the truck a week later. Makes American breeds look hopeless on terms of mechanical and interior layout. I have to admit it doesnt stack up to dodge as a working truck, but if you want a working truck look for a 3/4 ton.

Model Reviewed: Tundra SR5 4x4 XCab

Strength:

First, the V8 and transmission are quiet, smooth, and trouble free (at 40k and 1.5 years usage).

Second, gets 20 mpg on hwy when using cruise control with no load and 65-70 mph.

Third, does fairly well in 4x4 situations.

Fifth, hauls a load with little or no hesitation.

Sixth, Little or no driving fatigue (easy to drive, turn, and park).

Weakness:

First, the Tundras are shipped to the NW via rail. I have noticed rail dust paint damage on almost all Tundras in NW. Toyota repaired my truck, but it looks 10 yrs old. Called factory to suggest more protective shipping plastic and they brushed me off.

Second, thin body metal used on Tundras bends/dents easily.

Third, "CK" All weather Guard Package does not help prevent rock chipping behind rear wheels and at the lower front part of bed.

Fourth, bouncy front shocks.

Fifth, the disk breaks warped and to be turned (covered by warranty).

Sixth, high price, high depreciation, and low resale value/demand.

Recommend for light truck use. The V8 and transmission are great (made in Japan). Good freeway milage (20 mpg using cruise control). Look closely at your paint, for little rust/black specks that can be felt with your finger nail, when you select a Tundra. Do your homework and pay as little over dealer invoice as possible.

Owned a new 1990 Toyota 4x4 xcab and drove for over 175k + and 9 years. The move to Tundra is a nice change, but the quality materials are not there anymore.

Have friends with heady-duty Ford and Dodge trucks. The Tundra does not compare as a heavy duty truck, but does drive much nicer.

Strength:

Quite and nice acceleration

Weakness:

I have been having problems with either the transmition/drive shaft or the rear brakes or a tapping/clicking valve or lifters noise. Dealership says nothing is wrong?? I have been there 7 times now, and like one other review I have read, they say every thing is ok. I even got the service mgr. to say it doesn't feel right. in the rear the transmition shifts sloppy, I can also feel a bump when stopping and then taking off. I have heard this complaint now from many other sources like; tundrasolution.com I am going to look into this further. Has anyone else had these problems? Also have been having starting problems, as well. Poor Gas Milage Way off the sticker numbers. POOR MILAGE 12-14 miles / G

Do not buy Tundra, if you can put same $$ plus $5K and get X-5 SUV BMW or Nissan

Strength:

Great Power, Smooth ride Very good handeling, flat cornering. Like driving a luxury car. The seat hight seems to be higher than the Silverado. The power smokes any other truck in it's class. I have 2500 miles on the truck. It will not break the tires loose on dry pavement, it seems a little sluggish from idle to 1000 RPM. After 1000 RPM WOW!!!!!! Hang On the engine accelerates effortless.

Weakness:

No 4 wheel disk brakes, No Turbo, gas mileage weak. placement of cruise control. I am used to driving GM products and I like the placement of the cruise control. Intermitent wiper control keeps geeting in the way when turning.Fuel mileage. No inside control for fuel door.

I have 2 friends who own Tundras. They both told me that if I ever drove a Tundra I would not want to drive a American Truck again. They were wright. Most of the negative comments were nit-picking, the truck is actually a great vehicle. I have driven it on winding roads the truck handels exctionally well. It corners very flat for a truck. Be carefull on wet roads, the rear tires break loose very easy and it can swap ends.

If you are looking for a truck with POWER,STYLE,COMFORT FOR 2 and SMOOTHNESS this is the truck for you.

If you want a truck for very heavy loads (1 Ton) this truck may not be for you. That is your decision.

This truck comes in FULLLY LOADED !!!

I have never seen any other truck that just burst out energy and power when you press on the gas. What can I say it's awesome !!

I used my truck for my work as a Field Tech for a wireless company and most of the sites are off-road and required 4X4 vehicles. Although my truck is a 4x4, I rarely use it, this truck is powerful enough to get you up there when the need arises

Weakness:

The only thing I don't like is a rather small extended cab at the back. There seems to be not enough room behind or underneath the seat where you can play around with. I wanted to put some good speakers at the back wired up to my stock radio...the only thing that can fit there is two eights in the compartment behind the passenger side and the power-amp underneath the seat. This truck is like a big Tacoma.

Also if you are going to put a bed cover, stay away from "TOPDECK". My friend and I each has a "TOPDECK" bed cover and we both have the same problem. These are my conclusions:
a) the "TOPDECK" bed cover is too heavy that when you open it, the shocks drives it forward and thus causes the bed frame which the cover is screwed on to weekened.
b)possible design flaw by TOPDECK
c)possible design flaw by Toyota

I recommend this truck for anyone who likes off-road leisure...it's the best.

What can I say.. The V-8 is stong, responsive, and best of all smooth. I have drag raced all most every other full size domestic and could not touch my tundra. The Ride is snooth and gentle, and IDEAL for off-roading. I have yet to find a hill that can take this Truck. The push button 4WD is a godsend during weather.. The seats are comfortable.. The dash is well designed.. I have ridden in a 99 Ram and that thing is a pile of @#*$ in comparison.. This truck has the best ground clearance of any full size truck.. Best exccelertation.. Best Ride.. IT is the BEST full size truck you can buy.. PERIOD. I have 10k miles on my truck with no problems at all..

Weakness:

The seat belt retractors could be better.. and the back seats could use some work..

I recommend this great truck to anyone who loves to off-road yet likes a smooth city ride. This truck will last forever!!!

Strength:

Boy do I love this truck. I bought mine as I wanted it. Long bed, standard cab, V-6, auto, and air. My plans were to try to get 500,00 miles on her before the rebuild. But look below:

Weakness:

These brakes are making me mental. I have had it in to the dealer 8 times so far. As a matter of fact, as I am writing this, I have a rental Silverado (really a junk with 5000 miles on it but that is a different issue altogether.) Everytime I apply the brakes, I get the SHIMMY! They have turned the rotors, they have replaced them, they turned the drums, they replaced them, they turned them again, they measure, they measure some more. Today the factory rep is "looking at it." If this doesn't heal the wounds, I will pursue lemon laws. The dealership has been great, but I have already lost 7 days work with this thing. It really is too bad too, because I love the truck. What is really discouraging is that the shop forman said nobody else has had this problem. After reading this page it appears that he is lying. If you have had similar experiences, please email me the details as I know it will help my lemon law fight. Thanks a million, Scott at holdncaufield@cs.com

I love it but I am going to leave it.

I have been having problems with either the transmition/drive shaft or the rear brakes. Dealership says nothing is wrong and I am getting ready to persue lemmon law. Been there 5 times now, and like one other review I have read, they say every thing is ok. I even got the service Assistant to say it doesn't feel right. It shimmys and shakes when braking in the rear the transmition shifts sloppy, I can also feel a bump when stopping and then taking off. I have heard this complaint now from 5 other sources. I am going to look into this further. It sounds like a recall about to happen to me. Has anyone else had these problems? Also have been having starting problems, as well. Poor Gas Milage Way off the sticker numbers. Center console vibrates like an old run down harley Davdison engine.

I might could recomend one if mine was right, but at this point I do not think that I could condider another one. I believe I have recieved a lemmon

Model Reviewed: , Tundra, SR-5, Acess Cab, 4x4, TRD, V-8

Strength:

Quiet, great highway ride, good off road performance, fast, good cab space, well built (strong), Great to look at, Pulls my 21 foot travel trailer like it wasn't there, handles like a small sport truck.

Weakness:

TRD model should have stiffer suspension, TRD should come with BFG All Terrains rather than cheap BFG rugged trails, Better mileage when towing (17-18 unloaded 8-9 towing), would like to have had dual exhausts (it has dual cats), I don't care for the electric 4x4 transfer case shift

I would Absolutely recommend this truck. Best buy for any full size truck on the market. I have owned Toyota 4x4 pick-ups since 1982 and had great luck with them. I was excited when they announced the release of the Tundra. I purchased a new 2000 in October 1999. Some articles say it is not truly a full sized truck, but I have compared it to the Ford F150 and it is as big or bigger. The performance of this truck is great. Drive one and you won't be disappointed.

I do wish it had been available with dual exhausts. It came with dual catalytic converters that go into a single exhaust. Toyota Racing Development does offer an after-market direct bolt on cat-back system, so I'm not sure why they don't offer duals from the factory. I come from the old school of 4 wheeling and it is hard to get used to the electric transfer case shift button. I prefer the old manual lever, I feel it is more reliable and makes the truck look like a 4x4.

As far as performance I don't think there is another full size 1/2 ton that can come close. It is the quickest, fastest, and quietest production truck I have ever driven or ridden in. It has the toughest frame currently on the market and is the most reliable truck made. It also has a full 10" of ground clearance, more with bigger tires.

It is not perfect as I have noted in previous sections, but it comes closer than any others. If you like quality pick-ups you won't be disappointed, it may be a little plush for the hard core 4x4er, but I think once you drive it you could get used to most of those comforts. After-all I think the most important thing in a 4x4 is reliabilty so you can get safely home from the back woods and this truck has that. Try it you'll like it.
