Strength:

Very unique display and larger remote for better control.

Weakness:

The shelf life of this unit is some 5 years with most customers dumping money into it during those same 5 years.

I purchased this model in '02. In December of '03 I contacted Kenwood as I was experiencing difficulty. The face flipped over, however, no display was showing and I had no control of any button on the display. I talked them into paying for the labor, but I invested $80.00 for the dealer to uninstall the unit. When I received it back, everything was working properly. Now, in '06 I stated experiencing the same thing. I was about ready to contact Kenwood again, but decided to look at some reviews first. And to my surprise, the same thing that is happening to my unit the rest of the world has been experiencing as well. I am stuck on one radio station and have no control of my buttons, including the rest. I will not be fixing this unit again. I will be going to purchase something different this afternoon.

Strength:

I liked everything about except for one item. (listed in weaknesses)

Weakness:

Though it be a hard one but if I hit a bump the CD would skip. If my bass was to high it would also cause it to skip.

I must say that I am surprised by the reviews of this system. I know a system will not last forever, mine lasted 5 years just going out on me a month ago. It started by playing on the last channel I had it on and no lights or displays coming on. I had no control of it. When I pressed the reset button it killed everything and so I called the lifetime tech support with Crutchfield and they said from my description of the problem that the chip was toast and that 5 years is pretty good for a life of a head unit. I live in Alaska with temperatures during the winter reaching 40-60 below zero at times and never had a problem with anything. I truly fill that I got my moneys worth for 5 year life of this radio.

Same as all others. I rarely used this radio. The faceplate went blank yesterday. Kenwood says send it in for repairs at $60.00 and hour.

Strength:

Worked great for two years.

Weakness:

A borken radio, with no support from Kenwood.

Originally I bought the model below this one, but after having problems with this one on the first day it was installed, I brought it back. I was told they disconinued that model due to all the problems they had. So I upgraded to this model. I have had it for three years total. For the first two it worked great. I was very, very happy with this radio. Then The display went. About two months later the sound went. Then another two months the display will not turn when the car shuts off. SOUND FAMILIAR? I too have gotten no where with Kenwood. I have tried the radio in another car and it still does not work (thinking it was my car), the fuse is fine. I have but the factory radio back in my car now for the time being--and that one works great. I am extreemly disappointed. I went for quality, and obviously I got ripped off.

Used to be a great CD player

Weakness:

but the original manufacturer's radio that came with my car lasted a lot longer then this junk!

Wow! It's good to hear that other people have the same problem as me, but at the same time, it sucks to have problems. I, too, have been burned by the Kenwood KDC-716S. It worked perfect yesterday and now today, it opened fine, and music played out of it (the last station and volume setting I had) but I have no display and none of the buttons will work (even the reset button). So, I am stuck driving around with one radio station at one volume. I am curious if anyone has had this problem repaired or if the receiver is just trashed. What a waste of my time, money and sanity.

Made Kenwood lots of money.

Weakness:

POS does not work

P.O.S. I would love to help out in any anyway to form a lawsuit against Kenwood for selling this with known problems. I do not know of one person that didn't get screwed on this unit. Every unit quits working with the same problems.

Weakness:

won't last past two years

I won't even last past two years. The ribbon cable on the motor servo is weaken everytime the faceplate closes and opens. Therefore like everyone else, I experience degrading function. First volume won't work, then the lights, then not at all. One word--sucks not worth the money---and no support from kenwood.

Strength:

Great sound

Weakness:

Short life span. Little to zero support from the manufacturer.

This system sounds great but funny thing is now the face plate will no longer display. Hmmm very disapointed in this product. Owned it a little over a year the and used it approx 1 hour per day. Again "lights went out on the face plate" Sound familiar? Because Kenwood must be aware of this common problem and offers nothing as far as a fix. I would not purchase another Kenwood product. Also disapointed with the dealer for they turned me away being fully aware of this problem.

Strength:

Provides for a neat installation hiding the unit flush in the dash.

Weakness:

Not a durable unit as it relates to longevity.

The display stopped working without warning. Motor driven face plate continues to work but can't get any sound or any other response from the unit. The display can be seen if ambient light is low but it is very dim. Looks as if this is a common problem with this unit. Am cautious about sending it to a factory authorized service center due to anticipated high repair cost. It appears this unit has been discontinued.
