Model Reviewed: Sony CDX-C910

Strength:

Quality sound from 20bit DACs Copper Chassis (I suppose ''quality sound'' includes this) 4v preout Decent unit in it''s day, not for 2002.

Weakness:

Poorly assembled 2 preouts, no sub out Bulky remote included

I had figured this an excellent unit for a while - impressive sound, very clear - very professional looking unit too. I had begun to question it''s craftsmanship, however, when I began to have small problems with it ranging from a faceplate display randomly turning on and off with the faceplate securely attached to random "ERROR" messages on cds with no scratches whatsoever. Finally, when driving along one day listening to some Prodigy (''Diesel Power'' was the exact song :-)), I heard a noise which sounded like the laser continually searching for a track, accompanied with a burning smell. Hasn''t ever worked since - that''s pretty poor for a headunit valued at MSRP $899, of which I paid the not-so-cheap $300. ESPECIALLY for one as well cared for as mine, professionally installed and faceplate that was always kept in air conditioning - POOR! :-P. Will not buy Sony again, finally taking friend''s advice that no matter what you hear, Sony car audio (even pre-Xplod) is junk despite the high price tag for some units. Steer clear and go pick up an Alpine, Pioneer, or Eclipse. These people know what they''re doing, if you want your cd player to work and work for as long as you own it, that is.

Strength:

DSP capability, 4 20 bit d/a converters, smooth loading, 4v preouts.

Weakness:

daytime display is practically invisible.

I would just like to tell the world that there is no cd unit made (besides the c90 of course) that can compare to the sound quality that you will hear when you turn this thing on. No words can describe just how awesome this is. I have this wired via digital optical toslink to an xdp-u50d digital processor and I have complete control of EVERYTHING through the head unit (sub, four channel adj, time alignment for seat positions, 10 surround modes, and more). There are no "added features" that are on this unit just to make it look "cool". Every feature on this unit is one you will use. Unbeleivable unit that I recommend everyone take the time to listen to just once before they die.

Strength:

Everything. This deck sounds incredible, with the awesome Burr-Brown d/a's , 4 Volt pre outs, and once you plug in the DSP unit, it takes off from there!

Weakness:

Umm...none? It doesn't have a built in coffee maker, but it has everything else!

I paid $699cdn from a local shop and it was a kick-ass deal. Still have warranty on it. I wish the display was a bit more brighter, but otherwise it is a great sounding deck, and the bonus:not one amplifier built in! It is definatly the cleanest deck you will ever get your hands on. Very recommended. I wouldn't mind the CDX-C90, but a friend of mine has one, and the display isn't the brightest, especially in the light.

Model Reviewed: 90 CRX,, 93 Sunbird

Strength:

Sound quality, features, motorized face, rotary commander, and upgradability.

Weakness:

Lack of non-fading preout, display washout in daytime, and preout output voltage should be higher.

I currently own two of these, one in my toy, a 90 CRX Si, and the other in my daily driven 93 Sunbird. I love this deck and would not even consider using anything else. The 910's replacement the CDX-C90 does add a couple features that the 910 should have had to begin with and a little higher S/N ratio, but the cosmetics are horrible! That is the same display they used in the original Mobile ES deck back in 1990 or 1991. I bought my first one used off a co-worker and fell in love. I later made a foolish mistake and traded it for some parts for my Honda. I drove 7 hours to Lexington, KY, the closest Mobile ES dealer, and purchased another one. They were nice enough to let me use their install bay to put it in before the long drive home. Stupidity set in once again as it was traded to another co-worker for some more useless stuff. Thankfully I got the same one back in another trade not long after. I will remain loyal to this model until somebody can make something that will outperform it. 4 20-bit Burr-Brown D/As are the key to it's amazing sound quality and the impressive S/N ratio. Even Alpine's flagship falls behind by 10dB in the S/N ratio category, due to it's inferior single bit D/A. I recently purchased another unit off of eBay for a good price and I am actually going to buy another, as I will be very sad when the supply of these units dries up.

Strength:

SQ! Ugly looks (stealthy)

Weakness:

Ugly looks (not for everybody) would be nice if bass adjustment was at a lower frequency, no sub out or sub level control.

I bought this deck for $200 cdn tax included because it was a refurbished deck. This deck has a very low noise floor & the sound quality is very, very good. It's a warmer sound compared to the other decks I've had & I can really tell with the vocals, male or female. I was about to get the Nakamichi CD-45z but I started seeing a bunch of reviews that said that this deck sounds better. I also like the fact that the C910 is copper plated & pre-out only & at half the price, it was a no brainer. Prior to this deck, I had the P1r in my car & the C910 sounds more detailled & sounds less hissy. It lacks features but that's exactly the way it should be. I have the signal going through an EQL to a PPI PC4400 running a set of Focal's & a single 8W6.

Strength:

Motorized Face, Switchable 2 line Display, 20 bit DACs, 4v preouts

Weakness:

No sub-preout

This is the most excellent cd player I have owned, and it is my third. The first time I turned it on and heard that sweet music coming through my kappa perfect tweets I was -amazed-. The is the cleanest sounding unit you will EVER find, save maybe the bigger brother C90 unit. I love this player, and will continue to use it until it wont play anything anymore. From my experience with it so far, this seems to be a LONG ways off. :)

Oh and I only paid 300, if you can find it for this amount or less, pick it up, you will love it.

Strength:

The sound quality is incredible. The unit has NEVER EVER SKIPPED!!! This includes bad road conditions and minor scratches on CDs (I keep mine pretty clean)

Weakness:

It should have had sub pre-outs

I would highly recommend id due to the quality, but would suggest the CDX-C90 now because of the sub pre-outs. I paid a lot, but that's what happens when you order something before it ships.

Strength:

Transparent sound, tons of options, detachable face, great display, simple to control, wired remote, impresses friends. I have this hooked up to a 5-channel Clarion amp, and it sounds amazing.

Weakness:

When I angle the display it rattles from the car's vibrations, thus making the feature annoying to use. The display is kind of difficult to see in the daytime, but it's so bright and clear in the evening it almost makes up for it.

I got this off eBay for $305, a pretty good deal. The sound is amazing, as stated above, and the interface is simple but allows you to control tons of things about the unit. The display is detailed, and allows you to label disks and see the clock and the CD track information at the same time. (Something some other decks don't allow you to do.) The rattling when angled is annoying, though. All in all, it's almost perfect and I'm very happy with it. I would give this 4.5 if I could, but it has to be 4.
