Strength:

Adjustablity, simple to wire up, large display, DIN sized control unit.

Weakness:

Difficult to see screen on a sunny day.

I've had the 9200 since 1998 and I find it amazing. I use it in pro mode and its connected from a Pioneer Premier DEH-P700R to 1 2ch amp for the front tweeters, 1 4ch amp for the midranges (2 front and 2 rear - there rear speakers upper freq response is 5kHz) and to a 4ch amp (bridged to 2ch) for a 12" dual voice coil sub.

The Auto EQ function makes a massive difference and the Network Adjustment is a nice feature for balancing the system. The Time Delay is awkward to set up as you'll need to get out a measuring tape but once it's set then you don't need to set it again unless power is interrupted or you remove the unit.

The short cable (1.5m) that connects the control panel to the hide-away unit is too short if you plan to mount the hide-away in the boot/trunk. I had to get a Pioneer CD Changer cable to make the distance to the boot.

The unit does create noise. The hiss is audible between tracks and in quiet passages of classical music but I listen to a lot of loud rock and the total power output of my system is in excess of 1,000 watts so my ears can be too numb to hear a moderate hiss!!

All in all, it's a great product and I'll continue using it for years to come.

the finishing touch to ur system ....i have no words to say how strong it is....

Weakness:

the only weakness it has is if u don't use it .... that means no weakness

Yo this is one bad equalizer i just had to join and give my reviews. This is a work of art! It add spice to your car it make me feel like i am in the music i fell asleep with that music because it sound so smooth. If your music sound boring like mine did buy this equalizer! I was a bass lover but after this i love the other parts of my music.I have a pioneer eq - 6500 that is a other art ...seeing that the only problem is with the deq 9200 is that it does not send out enough power i put the 9200 and the 6500 to work as a team and damn i have m very own dance hall.

Strength:

-Plenty of options -Good looks -Full control -More than just and EQ -Can run seperate source to it and not even use a stereo (think MP3) -I'm sure there's more that I just forgot about

Weakness:

-Display can be hard to read in the sun -500mv output -Not for beginners

Basically, this is one marvelous piece of equiptment. I have owned other EQs that have many bands and still did not do what this EQ can do. The ability to change the levels to the amps (high, mid, or low) is one of my favorite features. There's nothing like having to run back and forth trying to set the amps gains. Also, if set properly, the imaging on even a poorly set up speakers could be up to at least amature quality (i.e., in the middle of the windshield). No, this EQ is not for the amature. You need a good undersanding of crossover points and slopes to take full advantage of this EQ. Contrary to a previous review, I believe that the slopes are plenty steep, and that he was probably using it wrong. Also, yes, the 500mv output is on the low side, which sorta limits it's competition abilities, however, I've seen it installed in a couple USAC vehicles that got 1st and 2nd place at the finals. So, maybe noise isn't as big a problem as some think. With this EQ, you are getting an EQ, Crossover, Up front level matching, and DSP. For the price, it's definately worth it.

Model Reviewed: Pioneer DEQ-9200

Strength:

With the time equalization feature in pro mode it is easy to adjust the sound for the different path lengths of the speakers in any given setup. This feature also helps get rid of the need for kick panels or other custom mounting of the front speakers to healp imaging & soundstage.

Weakness:

The display is nearly impossible to read in sunlight unless there is a shade over the faceplate. The .5V preamp outputs make it considerably harder to try to get rid of hiss (unless preamp boosters are used).

I bought this product 5 years ago with the intention of just using it as a separate sub control at first. As my systems grew this EQ became more & more of a valued tuning piece. PRO mode is the only real way to use it in my opinion. In standard mode you lose the steeper cutoff slopes on the crossovers & also the ability to put in the distance of all of your speakers for the "time alignment" function. With the unit in pro mode you can adjust the sub crossover point anywhere from 40hz to 160 hz in 1/3 octave increments, also with an adjustable slope of -6, -12, -18, or -24 db/octave. Very handy for making sure that the subs aren't bringing up the midbass sound too much. The auto-eq function is incredibly handy but it isn't perfect. After using it, as others have mentioned, some adjustments to the 80hz & below frequencies will be needed. Part of that is due to the microphone that is supplied with the unit, since it's too small to accurately read the bass being played. The one thing that I don't agree with some of the other reviews on is the bass being too low after using the auto eq. It actually brings it to a very good level for SQ competition, very flat. In all it's a very good unit for beginning & advanced users. The only things I'd like a little better would be a higher preout voltage & more adjustable bands for the parametric EQ.

Strength:

This DSP/EQ has more features than you could ever want with an eq. Like other reviews I've read , I had to have this when I saw what it could do. It's the only detachable EQ I've ever seen so I love the security aspect of it. Easy to install. Comes with a microphone to set up seat positioning and I love that. I only paid $225 for it new since I'm a Car Audio employee at a major retail chain. I love and use most of the DSP settings.

Weakness:

When you first get it the display is nice. Pioneer has not come up with a way to over come sun wash out on these type of displays. As months/years pass the display gets to the point where it's not legible during day time. At night the show begins. You must have the manual for this eq or do not buy it. There are a lot of small details that can only be figured out with the manual. Oh, one last thing. I bought the KEHP7400 flipdown cass w/ it and that was the last year (98?) they had decks that looked like the eq. Pioneer has not come out with a new equalizer in almost 4 years. That's ridiculous. If you want to mount it under the radio, you will have to have a Jap import for the room. Do not buy it if you don't have subs. That's just dumb. One of the nicest features of this deck is sub control.

I love the detachable feature. Because of the 2 piece design: control unit and processor, the control unit is only about 1 1/2 inche deep and can go anywhere your imagination takes it. Wish I could have had an extended warranty on it to cover the wear/tear on the display. Cosmetically this eq will not match any current Pioneer deck or any other brand for that matter. As looks/design is very important in car audio, I think that's a buying decision you have to make. The last year for a matching headunit was '98 I believe. Do not spend $400-$500 getting a hold of this piece. You'd be better off getting one of the many head units out that have a nice eq.****the Pioneer Premier DEX-P1**** has all of the features this dsp has, built into a cd player. Get that instead.

Strength:

In "Standard" mode, the 9200 provides Front, Rear and Subwoofer outputs. The Front and Rear channels can be high-passed at 50, 80, 125 or 200 Hz, at
6 or 12 dB/octave, or they can be run full-range. The Subwoofer channel has a LP filter that can be set at 50, 63, 80, 100, 125 or 200 Hz, with 6, 12 or 18 dB/octave slopes on tap.

In "Pro" mode, the 9200 treats your system as a three-way system, with the
front channel providing the feed for "HIGH", and the rear channel providing
the feed for "MID". The HIGH channel can be high-passed, at 1/3 octave
frequencies starting from 2.5 kHz to 10 kHz, with slopes 6, 12 or 18dB/oct
on tap. It cannot be run full-range (good news - no blown tweeters). The
MID channel can be band-passed, with the HP filter point selectable at 1/3
octave frequencies starting from 2.5 kHz and ending at 10 kHz, with the same choice of slopes as the HIGH channel. The HP filter for the MID channel can also be turned off. The LP filter for the MID channel can be set at 1/3 octave frequencies between 40 Hz to 160 Hz, again with 6, 12, or 18 dB/oct slopes. The LP filter for the MID channel can also be bypassed. Finally, the subwoofer channel has a LP filter that can be set at 1/3 octave frequencies between 40 Hz to 160 Hz, with 12, 18 or 24 dB/oct slopes. Neat stuff.

In both modes, you can use the "Auto-Eq" option. Basically, you fix the
supplied mic in the driver's head position, press the Auto-EQ button, and the system does the rest, using a 4-band "quasi-parametric" EQ (variable, 1/3 octave spacing, but fixed Q's of 1.2 or 2.6) and adjustment to the output levels of each channel group, to achieve what it thinks is the closest response to the target curve (you can choose one from three - flat,
or "natural", "mild" (a downward-sloping response), or "dynamic" (for those who love the "club" sound). The "Mild" setting seems best. YMMV. To my ears the Auto-EQ does work well, 'cept for the bass region, which I usually have to manually adjust after an Auto-EQ session. The manual suggests that the Auto-EQ only works from 80 Hz to 8 kHz (20 kHz for Pro mode), so that probably explains it. In the Pro Mode, you can adjust the 4-band EQ settings after Auto-EQ has done its job. You can't do this in Standard mode.

Weakness:

In all settings, the output level is a measly 500mV from any of the
channels. You probably wouldn't want to use the 9200 in a real "Pro" system because of the noise factor.

the 9200 is a tweaker's delight, but unfortunately it quickly leaves you wanting more options that you know DSP is capable of, for example dynamic compression, soft clipping on the subwoofer output channel, steeper slopes, more fine control over the filter cutoff frequencies, adjustable noise gating, and 7-band graphic EQ instead of the 3-band quasi-parametric
EQ. It can be a frustrating device at times!

I would recommend it to the average tweaker. However, I suggest that for even better results you use it in conjunction with a true "system EQ" - as the EQ factilities provided by the 9200 really aren't enough to entirely clean up your system's frequency response. I plan to use the Alpine 3402 to clean up the problems in my system that the 9200 simply can't handle.

Strength:

EQ functions, Crossover network, ability to be crossed as Tweeter, Mid, Bass OR Front, Rear, Sub. Excellent versatility. Excellent Spectrum analyzer. Easy install. Very thin and hide away unit can be mounted under front seats. Simple to use if you read and understand the manual. Volume control can be used as master volume. Auto EQ works well for beginners. 4 listening positions and 4 presets for the picky EQ user. SEPERATE sub control. Seperate front and rear level controls (if used as F/R/SUB). Or seperate tweet, mid and sub controls (if used as TWEET/MID/SUB).

Excellent piece if used correctly!

Weakness:

NONE

Most weaknesses in this review have been from USER ERROR. The EQ is used for high end stereo installs. I see most people complain about price or ease of use. Well... If you buy this unit, then your buying it to use as a HIGH END piece. Not just a light show on your dash. Most everyday users will not like it, but once they use it to it's fullest extent it's one of the most powerfull EQ/Crossovers for a dash mount found. JUST take the time to read the manual or find out if it's really for you. If your into the light show and that's why you bought it... then return it and go by yourself a simple, easy to use sony... or Alpine. Something that takes no brains to operate.

I'd recommend this to ONLY the high end car stereo enthusiast. It's perfect in every way for this. I used it in a 2300watt, 5 amp, 20 speaker system and it performed flawless.

I DO NOT recommend it for the 5 speaker, 400 watt guy who just wants to see some cool EQ on his dash. It won't perform as it made or intended for. It will simply add some echo to your tunes.

Strength:

Looks good, more features that I will ever know what to do with, detachable face

Weakness:

Kind of hard to figure out how to work. Needs all the RCA's used to function properly. No idependent sub control, like the 7600.

I got this unit used for $150. Can't beat that price. At first I didn't have the manual, and I thought this thing was never going to work. But right after I found it, everything made sense. I think you need to be using all of the RCA outputs for this thing to work properly, which might be a pain for some people. As the other review stated, the presets don't let my subs play loud enough, so I just use the auto eq and set my own frequencies. It really isn't hard after you get it figured out. It is a nice unit which I would recommend to someone with a little extra cash who wants a flashy yet useful piece of equipment.

Strength:

I like all the digital displays and the auto eq setup is awesome.

Weakness:

I have this unit for two years now and i still don't know how to use it. i always set it to auto. this unit is for the professional and makes the radio sound like you're in a concert hall or very high in treble. It might sound decent if you add a sub, but otherwise it's very confusing and frustrating to figure out, other than the fact that it is very expensive.

it is a very expensive gadget that requires professional installation and programing. beginner stay away.
