Model Reviewed: 88120 dvc 3ohm

Strength:

--Just one is good enough --plays low, very low, even to the point where you can't hear the bass but your car and throat vibrate

Weakness:

Stay away from Xtreme Sound in Cincinnati. I never told anyone I had an eclipse, never even had a chance to listen to it because I didn't have an amp at the time. A week later, my eclipse was missing. The only guys who knew were those who sold it to me, it was in the trunk, still fresh in the box!! Stay away from Xtreme Sound, give a fake address, pick up your sub in another car, or just buy online and save money to use on dynamat.

These subs are ridiculous, no one needs this much bass. I had my settings at balance front +3, volume 35 (outta 50), bass at 0. JL 500/1 pushing it, no boost. I went to a bar with some coworkers, decided to test my sub outside, put it to the aforementioned settings, Bass Mekanic frequency tracks, and 5 coworkers ran out the bar because they could feel/hear it inside. Get this sub, a quality amp and a high security system for your car, let it break in for a few days and put others with rusty cars and walmart systems to shame.

Model Reviewed: 88120 DVC (3ohmx2)

Strength:

~ Efficient. Will play LOUD, but needs lotsa current. ~ Goes low with ease. Played every track on Sub Zone's "Ultimate Bass", Vol. 1 CD with no problem, even track 10! But so did the idMAX. ~ Pretty quick for a 12".

Weakness:

~ Dual 3 ohm resistance makes many amps overheat & blow fuses (1.5 ohm in parallel). The newest version (4ohmsx2) should do better. ~ It ain't cheap, and it's heavy as cement.

Good sounding driver, this. Unfortunately, you'll need a 1 ohm- stable amp to drive "last year's model". Eclipse sold these as "Dual 4 ohm", but the reality is: two 3 ohm coils. Set-up was: Sub Zone H112-S143 Z-Box (1.43 cubes empty), stuffed with about 18 oz. of polyfil, wired with doubled 12ga. Monster, in parallel, x'ed-over 110Hz @ 24db/oct. It got my Memphis Studio 16-ST200 fairly hot, then finally both fuses croaked. But at least the Memphis had the Eclipse woofer crankin' for several hours! It was good, and it was loud. With a 2 ohm DVC Image Dynamics idMAX wired to a new Alpine MRD-M300 in the same Z-Box -- well, let's just say the Alpine dealer doesn't like me anymore. :p Shi* happens! (But I have to say that the M300 did drive the 88120 well before it gave up the ghost with the idMAX.) If you have the 3 ohm DVC version, get a good 1 ohm-stable, (preferably an AB) amp. And buy an extra battery. Or, if you go with Class D, check out something with a higher damping factor such as the new Rockford's and JL Audio's, etc. Then, you shall be bumpin' righteously.

Strength:

Excellent SQL and SPL under any circumstances. Very durable cones, terminals, and voice coils. At 200 (eBay) to 350 (warranteed store), nothing surpasses it in value or performance (500w RMS, 1000w Peak, over 2.5 inches of excursion.)

Weakness:

Performance-wise, absolutely none, if you want to honestly complain about how much it weighs, don't stick it in your miata. Be sure to put it in the proper enclosure for your musical tastes, I would recommend a 1.3 cu ft. sealed enclosure for a musical setup (Rock, Pop) and a 2.0 cu ft. ported enclosure for SPL performance (Rap, Bass Tracks) Nothing under 1 cu. ft should be used, this sub is too beastly for a small sealed enclosure.

In a 2.0 cu ft. ported enclosure, one 88120.DVC hits 149.7 dB with 750 watts. ONE sub, almost 150 dB, what can compare? Real enthusiasts know the key to true SPL is massive cone area and excursion (xmax) with durable, perfect linear motion, and nothing outperforms the Eclipse 88120's and the 88120Ti's in any of these. The sub moves an inch and a half one way without any distortion, even at 500 watts per voil coil, the listed peak power level by he manufacturer (www.eclipse-web.com) Would highly recommend over ANY 12" audiobahn, Cerwin-Vega Strokers, Rockford Fosgate Powers, Infinity Kappa Perfects, Alpine Type - R's, JL W3's AND W6's, honestly anything except, the almighty JL Audio 12W7 of course. There are subs with more "power handling" than the eclipse, such as the musically horrendous Audiobahn Flame Q's and Linear Compressions, But when it comes to the most bang for the buck, the Eclipse 88120.DVC takes home the trophy.

Strength:

The strenghts are they're Eclipse! The best products on the market in my opinion.I have yet to hear an Eclipse system that doesnt sound good and force your balls into your throat.

Weakness:

A big weakness is the price, but then again you get what you pay for. If you want unbeatable high end audio products, your gonna spend alot of cash.

Ive used Eclipse products ever since i got into car audio about 4 years ago. Almost every system ive run has used Aluminums.I just recently bought a new car so I got to start out fresh again in putting together a new system.I just dropped over 3g's on an all Eclipse line-up.Im running 2 of the new dual 4ohm 15" Aluminums. Each powered off a channel of my Eclipse DA7232 2-channel Class D subwoofer amp.Pushin between 1000W Rms and 2000W peak at 2ohms per channel.I have each sub wired to a 2ohm load. They hit super low and are super clear but to tell you the truth these new Aluminums lack a little bit output wise compared to the old 3ohm config ones. I think what it is really, is the same as JL with the new W7's. They used the 3ohm setup because that was the best config for the sub to perform at high output without sacrificing SQ.The new Alums are only this way to benefit installation flexibitly.Still these subs are nothing short of amazing.Hit 157dB my first try of three at a local SPL comp, with a final of 158.1dB.

This is where im gonna dis every brand out there that isnt eclipse and the people that buy those other brands, because if it isnt eclipse and you own it, your a tool and not a true audiophile.

Strength:

everything, no distortion...period.

Weakness:

nothing!!!!!!!

First used a .5 cu. ft. sealed encolure for both subs, powering it with a Kicker ZR1000 mono load. Producing somewhere between 1000 watts 2ohm mono and 1285 pure watts 4 ohm mono. Since the configuration is 6-ohm for the DVC, i wired them up in a 3-ohm configuration. The amp produces something like 1100 watts per sub. I increased the box size to a little under 1.0 cu. ft. per sub and wired it the same, and now i feel that my trunk is going to break off soon. DynaMat is a joke for these subs, the s--t don't even work after installing it. I can feel the subs in my throat, chest, and rattle in my car falling apart, but hey, no sub can beat it...unless you have a titanium. I feel that if i can make a bigger box or go ported, no one outside of eclipse subs can compete. Eclipse is very conservative with their measurements in output power, because i'm already passing there maximum peak power and its barely breathing.

Kicker VR Comps, SoloBaric's D Series (round sub); Rockford Fosgate's Power HX2; and JL W7. But nothing compares.

Sound awesome (sq) and look great.

Weakness:

Will not handle what they're rated at. Also very expensive and I had to wait a month to get the woofers.

I tried using the new Eclipse aluminum 8102.4 subs and was very dissapointed. Don't get me wrong it is a great sounding sub, it just can't handle power. I was using an MTX 81000 D and it blew the speakers the first day and I was not even playing them that hard. I replaced a pair of JL Audio 10W6 that I played the stink out of for three years. I replaced them just because I wanted to try something new not because the were blown. The JL Audios played a lot louder with way less power and were impossible to blow. Jl 's are just a better woofer. Not as musical but way more efficient and reliable.

Strong solid bass out of a tight box. Excellent power handling capabilities. And they even look mean!

Weakness:

The DVC only come with a 3 ohm impedence per coil so it is impossible to get a 2 ohm load out of 2 subs.

I own two 10" aluminum series eclipse subs. I have very limited space in my singe cab pick-up and these subs work perfectly. I am powering them with a mtx thunder2300 amp that pushes just over 725. I have not had any problems except that one sub had a blown voice coil when it was installed new.
