Looks Nice

Weakness:

Out of Box wrong configuration, leakage and general disgust.

I bought a Edelbrock Performer RPM 750CFM carb. I paid $350 for the carb. When I installed it on my motor, It completely flooded the motor out. Had to buy new plugs. I pulled it off, and found that they had the wrong jets and wrong metering rods installed. With edelbrock, you have to constantly try a combination of metering rods and jets. Well, to get the original combo or close to it, you have to buy 3 calibration kits (edelbrock by the way...), which you should price them (I paid $50 per kit). Once I installed the proper jets and Metering rods, which were Recommended when I called the Edelbrock Tech line. Tried 3 different combinations that they recommended. By this time all the gaskets are worn out from you taking the top lid off. Oh and by the way. Edelbrock carbs are Carter Carburetur Base with a Webber Carb top. (Who are they kidding?) Then I re-configured it for a 650cfm in an attempt to stop it from fowling out the motor...no luck. Called tech support "Im sorry we dont know what to recommend". I did. Bought a Holley 750, bolted it on in the Out of Box condition. Never had a problem again and NEVER had to even open it up.
I would suggest REALLY checking around before you buy edelbrock parts. I also had a pair of Elite Series No logo Valve covers...you know the ones for $80... all of the bolts that are in the top that you see...theyre plastic. They heat up and fall out. AND dont spill oil on them by the way..the chrome pitts with oil on it. OH..and dont forget the stamp on the bottom that says "Made in Tiawan". For the money, I definitely would check around!!

Model Reviewed: Performer

Strength:

Ease of installation and adjustment (just bolt'er on and go). Out performs the original equipment 700 cfm Holley under all conditions.(installed on my 83 HO 302c.i. Mustang)...better power, mileage, and starting than the holley under all weather conditions (-30 to 109 F).

Weakness:

Had to reroute my fuel line to the right passenger side of engine and install a performance filter.

I purchased the Performer on sale at an auto parts store, when someone that ordered it backed out of the deal. I only paid 160 bucks for it...the best bucks I've ever spent on my Mustang. I'd highly recommend anyone with a carburated V8 to replace the stock carb with an Eldelbrock...you won't be displeased! My performer not only got my 160,000 mile 302 equiped Mustang back to leaving scratch in 3 gears but also improved my mileage from a pathetic average of 15 MPG, using the Holley, up to a solid 18 MPG around town and 23 MPG on the highway. Of course you need to modify these MPG's if you get it into the secondary racing motor cycles!

As mentioned above, the performer replaced a 700 CFM carburetor which was stock on my HO 302 Mustang. I fooled and fussed with the Holley for over fifteen years before I found the 'Performer' on sale at my local auto parts store. I was tired of having to repair leaking gaskets, accelerator pump parts and simply sick of how tired the holley was making my 'Boss' perform. The performer showed instant power gains, best of all, ease of use, and excellent dependability. Have yet to have to work on it since installing the performer over 3 years ago.

Strength:

Good drivability, easy maintenance, reliable, good performance.

Weakness:

Not as strong as Holley but more reliable.

I would recomend this carb over a Holley. I had a Holley 600 and it required tuning all the time. The Edelbrock bolted right on without any tuning. I've had the carb at least three years now, and recently the only problem I'm having is the float sticks at start-up. Once the car warms up its fine. The car sits alot especially in the winter, so this is probably the cause of the sticking float. If you drive regularly it should be fine.

Strength:

Aside from having absolutely no problems with it. It droped our car's 1/4 mile time by a drastic 1.1 secs. It had a 2 barrel before. It has never had a problem starting out of the box. Great product, and would highly recomend it over Holley.

Weakness:

I didnt really see any. Aside from the fact that the finish got dull after our coolant reserviour blew. :)

$209, I would recomended it even at a higher cost.

Strength:

Ran excellent right out of the box with no tuning at all. Looks pretty good and has hookups for all vacuum sources. I passed Emission check with a 1978 350ci and could have passed according to a vehicle using 2000 model year standards.

Weakness:

Does not start well when the weather gets hot and the engine has been ran recently. I am going to try a spacer to help prevent heat ransfer to the carb. I will let you know how it works.

$200 - Yes I would recommend it just for the ease of installation. I would highly recommend it if I can get the hot starting problem taken care of.

Strength:

looks cool, metering rods are a breeze to change, floats easy to set. Has a nice set of secondarys. =)

Weakness:

bulky, fuel slosh, bulky in the way linkage, rarely jetted correctly for any application, (hey, makes em $$ when u buy their jetting kits!) AND Edelbrock has the worst tech help I have ever talked to. Comp Cams tech line helped me get my jseetin better than edelbrock ever did.

Seemed to be a pleasnt carb for all out crazy man driving, but not much for economy. Jetting these things is a Bear, dont expect much help from edelbrock. buy something diffrent, or sell your current one for u decide to hit it with a B.F.H.

Strength:

Easy to install with little mod to linkages. Looks pretty.

Weakness:

Quality is poor and is not designed to last.

The Edelbrock and Carter AFB are both made by Weber. I have gone through 2 carbs in the space of 4 years. They both work ok for a while then they seem to fall of in performance and mileage. I took the first one apart so see if clogging was a problem but apparently was not. The carbs leak after a while and do not seem to respond to tuning. These aftermarket manufacturers would like you believe that the original car engineers were inferior to theirs, but my original Rochester 2GV was better in quality than these (just can't get enough juice for acceleration).

The OEM equipment is better overall in terms of value and durability.

Strength:

Easy to tune. If you remove the airhorn, the jets are right there without having to take the carb off the car. **tip** If you don't need a choke, remove the entire choke assemble. It makes getting to the jets a 2 minute procedure. Once you have the correct jets in there, calabrating the primary jets for cruise and power mode is easy with the metering rod setup. This carb is much more resonsive than the Holly I just took off and remonds me of the responsive feel of a quadrajet carb.

Weakness:

Like I said, the instruction manual could have better pictures although all the information is there to tune the thing. No knock to Edelbrock, but the "auto mart" stores that carry the Edelbrock brand usually do NOT have ANY of the jets, rods and springs....plus they have no idea what you are talking about when you ask for them. I had to drive 45 miles one way to get the calabration kit from a large speed shop. Edelbrock should make all retailers carry the parts to support their products!!!!! No exceptions!!

The easy tunability and compatability with the Torker II manifold I already had on my GTO's 400 engine were the main concern. Easy to install and setup. Directions and pictures in the manual need to be a bit better for the "non-professional" do-it-yourselfer. The "no-tune" necessary was not applicable in my case as extensive tuning was necessary with my setup. BUY THE CALABRATION KIT! You will need to determine your idle vacuum and determine the correct springs. I also went to larger jet sizes in both the primary and secondary jets (.116 primary, .113 secondary, stock rods, silver springs). The car is very responsive with this carb and setup!

Similar Products Used:

Holly, Quadrajet etc.

I really like this carb. I can set the idle to 650-700 RPM (200 rpm lowerr than the Holly) and the idle is really smooth and steady even with the Air conditioner on. Transistional progression from idle to power is very crisp and responsive kinda like an EFI system. Hope this info helps...I wish I had some of this info when I went out and bought this carb. Big value with big returns.
