Model Reviewed: Jacobs Pro Street Ignition Kit

Strength:

More MPG
Easy starts
Better throttle response

Weakness:

Difficult install

I installed a jacobs ignition on my 72 Dodge Challenger. I immediately noticed easier & fast starts, 4 mpg more, no miss fires, no more fouled plugs, and to top it off better low end responce. I had a heavily modified small block (340 dyno'ed at 461.3 HP) in the car and its lived happily ever since.
So I bought the Off-Road kit for my pick-up and got the same effect. I am miffed at the amount of negative reviews for the product. Its been nothing but a great system for me. Of course it would make sense if they were miswired, Badly grounded, or shorting. It wasn't the easiest install even with my automotive experience.

NONE!!! Maybe a good thing is it comes with a Rev-limiter, and Kill switch. That's it!

Weakness:

EVERYTHING Well over priced!!!!!

This product sounded great at the time but for the price you should notice a difference. I DID NOT! I was running 150 shot NOs with all kinds of motor work about $10,000 to be exact. All that and there was no difference!!! I would never buy one again!

Strength:

Absolutely the best unit money can buy. Period...

Weakness:

Units fail with time, and COMPLETE lack of customer support.

To date, I have had 4 Jacobs systems on 3 vehicles over an eleven year period now. Vehicles have all been 4x4's - both domestic and import for 4cyl toyotas to v8 chevs. Dr. Jacobs has created an exeptional product. Vehicles consistently run better and have more power. I am a believer. When offroading in extreme conditions, such as high speed river running - where the engine is definiely sucking through water, these units are nothing short of a miracle. Even in the most adverse combusion conditions, they just keep going, and keep the engine running beautifully. The first unit I got was one of Dr. Jacobs first analog units which actually had a bypass switch to go back to conventional ignition. Using this, I tested the unit by getting into conditons where the engine would barely run at all, then turn on the unit, and it was amazing. Perfect running. The latest units have performed great as well. No other unit I have seen even comes close to this. Unlike the msd units that shoot off several quick sparks in a row, the Jacobs maintains one very hot long duration spark for the entire firing phase duration. You can open up the spark plug gaps as much as you want, and it produces an amazing spark. I have tried plug gaps up to .100 with great results. The Dr. used to reccomend much larger gaps at one time, but you still want the shortest spark path to be the gap to the electrode, and not to the base of the plug. Jacobs plug wires are also the very best I have found. Try an ohm meter on the leading brands yourself if you question the fact that Jacobs wires are not really better. They are a little higher cost then need be though. A properly funcitoning Jacobs system can not be beat!!! With the current vehicle specific systems, installation is not much a hastle either. And how about that unique anti theft feature - pretty slick. The down side? Ignition unit reliability and customer support leave something to be desired. I have had three units fail over time. One quit dead, and two have partially failed, but left me "running". This really blows. However, I am such a beleiver in them that I keep buying new ones. As for Jacobs customer support - pretty much don't waste your time. It is almost non-existant, and an incredible hastle. Warranty items will be replaced, but that's about it. And make sure you really follow their return directions to a tee, or they will not accept your return package. Great product, horrible company support.

Unreliable, expensive, difficult to install and no response from e-mails to Jacobs.

Product: Jacobs Mustang 5.0 Ultra Team The unit was installed in a 94 Mustang Gt 5 spd. The installation was a bit tedious but the directions were good. The car was in excellent condition and previously averaged 24 to 25 mpg on long trips. With the Jacobs unit installed, the coil failed in a month 900 miles from home. With a new coil, (now carry backup at all times) we took a 5500 mile trip. Ave. mpg was 23.0 No increase in power, no change in idle and NO increase in mpg.

Strength:

Many more mpg No more mis fires

Weakness:

Non-adjustable wire lengths Jacobs not being able to provide the correct wires. If you need a wire that is not HEI to HEI contact Magnecor

Stay away from the ice systems and the torquer coils. The pro street system is pretty good. Don't expect 30 hp, but you can expect more mpg as well as a better idle and more mis-fires under boost at high rpm.

Did not last 5000 miles on my car

I bought this street pro direct from Jacobs. they were very helpful getting it all hocked up and running. It seamed to work fine. I had it on the car for last summer and drove the car about 4000 miles. then I put the car away for the winter. this spring I took the car out and drove less than a 500 miles and the whole system failed. Even if I got it fixed I could never trust this product.I would not recomend buying it.

Strength:

Power increase at higher rpm.

Weakness:

Price, questionable build quality, make sure you get it from Jacobs(better tech support and warranty replacement.

I recently brought the ICE-PACK for my 95 civic. I brought my first Jacobs system and wires about 3yrs ago. It does work however, I don''t think it''s far superior than other ignitions. The first time I ordered the system I had to send it back. I spent a good 3hrs installing the system, drove the car hard for 10mins turned the car off and it would not start again. I had to disconnect it and send it back. I really didn''t like the wires at all. They would be okay if you don''t change the plugs often, The boots and connections continue to become loose. Overall it''s an average system, it gives good power at high rpms. I like the variable coil in theory. It dosen''t save to much gas for me, but that me be because of the other mods I have. If you choose to get one, get it from jacobs. You will pay more but the tech staff is nice and you''ll have no problems with returns.

build quality, false claims of power

I bought this product thinking it was going to give me a noticable increase in power. Wrong, what I got was a poorley manufactured product that gave me no noticable increase in power. After a few months one of the spark plug wires fell apart. Purchased moroso plug wires, way better quality at half the price. Then after only about a year of use the whole unit failed, leaving me stranded and calling a tow truck. What a waste of money. A friend of mine had the same unit on his mustang and his failed after a year and a half of use. DON''T BUY IT!!!

Model Reviewed: Jacob's iCE Pack

Strength:

Improves acceleration, Smooths car, easy to make connections

Weakness:

May be hard finding a place to mount, price could be a little cheaper.

I got this package in the mail on friday. I installed this on my 1988 Honda Accord LX. The iCE Pack included: Jacob's Torquer Coil, Secondary Trigger, iCE Computer, Spark Plug Wires, and all mounting and wire ties and spark plug separators. The hardest thing about this was choosing where to install the device and it's components. Once I figured that out the connections were VERY easy to make. The hardest thing I had trouble with was the 12V supply that I was to wire the new coil to. I used the fuse for the windows and had to buy wire because the short little wire wouldn't reach all the way around to the battery. the recommended gaping for my vehicle was .044 and I gapped the plugs to .060. Once installed I did a test run and I noticed a pretty good increase in acceleration. When my tachometer hits around 3500 RPM it picks up even more. Passing slower people on the freeway is easier now. I haven't driven it much to say how much MPG has increased, but I'm sure it will. My girlfriend even noticed the acceleration increase...She said the the car "glides" now. I'm not going to mislead people about the accleration.....it's not a "face stuck to the seat, supercharger" acceleration. It is, however, enough for you to feel. I think this product was well worth the money I spent. My car is so much more smooth now.
