Tokico Illumina Shocks Shocks

Tokico Illumina Shocks Shocks

DESCRIPTION

The Tokico Illumina uses a specially calibrated orifice bypass system which allows simultaneous adjustment of both compression and rebound. Each adjustment "clicks" so you always know your shock settings. The adjustment range of Tokico Illumina is one of the widest available, with 5 separate positions. Position 1 is the softest, or lowest damping force, while position 5 is the stiffest.

Strength:

great customer service. Sent free stop bushings and nuts. Great overall ride, even on the streets

Weakness:

the dial knob is plastic. With the wrong screws size driver screws, they will break. Had to call customer service and get new ones....

Bought it used, but still works great!!! I rode in a couple of civic with different shocks, and I have to say the illumina's are the best. Very satisfied with them. A setting of 5 will kill ur cars body on the street with all the potholes in the ghetto :) I keep mines rolling at 3. Got them coupled up with Skunk2's, and they're great.

Strength:

At 5 Greatly improves handling, I can do turns 20mph faster. Also Car is 1.5 - 2 inches lower. Set it to 1 when your woman starts nagging. Takes me about 5 seconds per strut to switch with a screw driver.

Weakness:

Dont drive on 5, your chassis will start stress cracking and your neck will hurt. 5 is for Smooth Racing Surfaces only.

Bought My MR2, it came with the Tokico's Illumina Struts. At first they were set to 5 (stiff) the previous owner said it was the softest setting (I think thats why he sold the car..) I figured out that 1 is the softest and I was amazed what a difference it made, it was as soft as stock. This is a true Race and Drive home strut. I am happy with this product. Makes my car about 1.5 to 2 inches lower wich looks really nice. You can see some pictures here . (copy and paste link) http://www.techroot.net/images/mr2/

Strength:

Very easy adjustment (takes about 30 seconds to do all four corners). 5 levels of stiffness. Passive feel at low speeds, extreme response when pushed hard.

Weakness:

none

I think these shocks were probably the best investment i ever made! The ease of adjustment through all 5 levels of stiffness is great, and you can definately feel the difference between each level. I installed the shocks myself and the job took about 2 days because it was my first time doing suspension work. Everything went smoothly though and now i could do the job in prob about 5 hours with hand tools. I have them coupled with skunk2 coilovers. overall the suspension feel is phenomonoly better than stock shocsk and i recommend upgrading to these shocks if your car is lowered.

these shocks are great. considering i had my springs on for 22,000 miles or so with stock shocks, these shocks are like night and day. i''ve set them to the 4th setting and i think i''m going to keep them like this. i love how stiff my car feels now, everything feels like they''re in place. probably the best mod i''ve gotten on my car to date. i have them paired with H&R sport springs.

Strength:

Can be tuned from super stiff to almost stock. Not rice-rocket-ground-scraping-low. Only lowers 1.5 inches.

Weakness:

Setting 5 is too stiff for daily driving. Makes cd''s skip and every bump noticable.

I have combined the Tokico Illumina 5 way adjustable shocks with the Eiback Pro Kit lowering springs. The mechanic that installed them adjusted the shocks to the stiffest setting (5). It was awesome for about 2 days until I realized the source of my intense lower back pain.

The subtleness of the 1.5inch lowering makes the car look stock without scraping the ground. I am still able to get up my steep driveway with the shock/spring combo.

Due to the intense back pain (I use the NJ Parkway on a regular basis for those of you that know the condition of that road) - I reduced the setting on the shocks to a 1.5 setting. I am completely happy with them now. The car doesn''t bounce over bumps and potholes like it would with cut springs and I can take most corners about 5-10mph faster with the added stiffness.

Overall an excellent product.

Strength:

Adjustability. Lifetime warranty.

Weakness:

Adjusters can be hard to read. I had to buy a dentist mirror to adjust the rears. However, I don''t the change the settings often: 5 for day-to-day, 3 for freeway trips. I would like a larger spread on the five settings: softer 1 to stiffer 5 (consider this a nitpick) One of my rears failed within a week and was replaced. An adjuster on a front failed after a few months (dampening did not change after 3). I may have gotten shocks frm a bad lot.

With the stock Ford, it was easy to outdrive the suspension, even with the limitations of the designed-in poor handling (excessive understeer combined with "rear steer" during driving with turns). I had a full set of Tokicos installed in conjunciton with other suspension modifications. Transfomred the car completely. For this car, I would consider such a change a must for anyone who does more than drive the car in a straight line. Car handles better than my old stock MR2.

Adjustability. That, and then install was completely painless.

Weakness:

Hard to adjust the rears in my car. A knob like Koni uses would have made it impossible. I ended up drilling a couple holes in the braces so i can use a regular screwdriver. Accord owners know which braces I''m referring to.

I bought the full suspension kit including Tokico''s sport springs. When I drove it for the first time all 4 shocks were set to 5. Bone jarring down the 405 to say the least. I love being able to firm them up for spirited driving and making them silky smooth for long days of highway cruising. Great product.

Strength:

Easy to adjust with small screwdriver. It''s nice to have the flexibilty to adjust the rates. Takes about 45 seconds to adjust the front and back.

Weakness:

Hard to read the dial setings in dim light. White indicator on plastic dial has worn off. Plastic indentation still permits readability but it''s poor.

Used on a 98 Accord/sdn 4cyl/5spd with OEM springs and SRIXON4 205/60/15 tires. Very good purchase. I drive over 30,000 miles/year and the adjustable feature is great. I usually use 2 or 3 for daily and 4 or 5 for bone rattling. 26,000 miles and no problems.

5 way adjustability, great rebound, smooth ride, ease of install.

Weakness:

The adjuster require a small screw driver and seems very ''cheap''. It gets the job done tho. If it had knobs like the Koni Yellow''s it''d be soooo much better. This is not a product to help "Lower or raise your car" it''s for suspension tuning and ride quality.

I have had these struts for a long time. I love them. I drive my car hard and very fast often. The roads in my town are very poor in places and filled with potholes. The Illumina''s offered a smooth ride with a great rebound. Much better than stock. I was really impressed. The adjustability is such a key function/feature I wouldn''t be able to live without.

Adjustability definitely, excellent cornering, nose dive improved a bit, very comfortable on long trips, ease of installation. Lifetime warranty.

Weakness:

nothing really, I am very happy with my purchase. Well worth the money

I would definitely recommend this product to anybody looking to get better performance from their vehicle. I have a 99 Mustang and it works absolutely well with them. The cornering ability of my car definitely improved and it's very comfortable as a daily driver. I considered the other brands (like KONI and BILSTEIN) but they were a lot more expensive and I don't see any of the other shocks and struts being better than these Tokicos. For the money Tokicos are the best value.
