Tokico Illumina Shocks Shocks

Tokico Illumina Shocks Shocks

DESCRIPTION

The Tokico Illumina uses a specially calibrated orifice bypass system which allows simultaneous adjustment of both compression and rebound. Each adjustment "clicks" so you always know your shock settings. The adjustment range of Tokico Illumina is one of the widest available, with 5 separate positions. Position 1 is the softest, or lowest damping force, while position 5 is the stiffest.

Strength:

Adjustability.

Weakness:

Location of valve adjustment screws.

I needed some new struts ASAP after changing my springs to Eibach Pros with the original struts. What a bad move. I first ordered the Koni Yellows as per the recommendation of the sales guy, but they where on back order. The Tokicos arrived within 48 hours and where on the car the next day. The handling is super, adjustability awesome (3 is my favorite on all 4 corners), but the rears are a pain to adjust. Tokico should build a electronic adjustment control, would do wonders.

Strength:

Shocks held together pretty well considering the abuse they've been through

Weakness:

Customer service, the inability to economically and quickly get the shock rebuilt

I'd look elsewhere is you are racing. They work well on the street, but on a high sprung race car, they don't last.

Strength:

The adjustability is great. I can set the struts to "2 front and 1 rear" and have a GT cruiser for those long trips, then set them to "% front and 4 rear" and have nice stiff suspension at the track.

Weakness:

Hard to get to rear strut tops to adjust them. Use of an offset screwdriver is recommended. This is specific to the MKII MR2 and may not apply to other cars.

Paid $110/strut. I would highly recommend them. The only comparable product is the Koni, and you can't adjust both rebound and dampening with the Koni. (even though they are more expen$ive)

Similar Products Used:

Stock struts-there is no comparison, the Tokicos are in a different class than the stock suspension.

Strength:

The adjustability. I can drive to a Prosolo event or a Solo Series 2 event, then set the shocks to 5 for harsh kidney hurting ride and then back to Lexus smooth for the ride home. It is a great setup - good warranty.

Weakness:

The car is now too soft, I might have to go with some different springs. Under hard acceleration the front now lifts and this did not happen with my original Honda shocks. Under hard braking, the nose now dives. Again, this is a Tokiko problem.

It was purchased from Europarts in Montreal Canada shipped to me for @ $850 Canadian. This seemed a reasonable price. Overall I really like how easy it is to adjust. Taking on the track is where they really shine.

Strength:

Good price for a quality product. Good range of adjustability. I can make this car go from understeer to oversteer with just a few "clicks". Works very well with stock bushings and sway bar. Makes transition from street to race tires easier.

Weakness:

Don't like using an ofsset screw driver in the back, a knob would serve me better (Race glooves and small screw drivers do not work very well).

Next best thing to coilovers! Get some!

Much better than the stock unit. Drives and rides better. Cured that MR2 bounce. I can now drink a cup of coffee before I put the car on the track.

Strength:

Very good if you have stock suspension setup.

Weakness:

I drive hard and autocross, with eibach springs my NON adjustable struts are not up to the task.

I didn't know that the non adjustable were just factory replacements. With eibach springs the struts are not stiff enough so the car feels unsettled and is uncomfortable. If you drive hard get something that's adjustable, even the adjustable tokico illumina.

I put a set of Illumina's on my '85 Mustang. Good shock, I like the adjustability, and they were much cheaper that Koni's

Strength:

-5 point adjustability
-Lifetime warantee

Weakness:

-Some say they don't hold up when a car is lowered too low

I have Illuminas on my 92 Integra.

5-Point adjustability helps when trying to figure out what setting they're set at. They go from nice and soft to stiff as hell.

They are awsome. Much much better than the stock ones especailly if you are trying to lower your car. Dope. It is so stable my car can go up to 130mph without notice. Match up with the Eibach Pro-Kit, wow, awsome

Weakness:

Nothing bad right now

Buy it, no doubt if you want your car to look good and comfortable

Koni is good too, but Tokico top of the line might be better. My friend has the Koni for his prelude and after 2 years he has to replace them. Who knows about my Tokico, but right now they are awsome
