Transmission, rattles, bad ride, crafstman ship I have a little over 14000 miles on my TL TYpe s and I must say I am very disappointed in this car.I came from a Lincoln LS to this and could not have made a worst decision. While writing this my car is currently at the dealer for numerous repairs. The irony is my decision to lease the acura was based on what I thougt was a very reliable car as it turns out the car STINKS!!!!!! I would not recommend this car or any other Acura to anyone. Strength:
Best car for the price; all the options included except the Nav system that's not necessary; excellent power and the usual great Acura start from stop; hugh trunk room and overall style. The 2001 Blue color is great.
Weakness:
The transmission; the squeaking moonroof; the outside noise with all windows closed; the plain black plastic dash and console (paid over $300 to install fake wood-but looks much better; the clear coat over the paint (scratches very easily when in the sun); the OEM tires wears out before 20,000 miles; the wipers causes streaking; coins falls behind coin tray causing it to not close fully; no memory on driver settings-seat, steering & mirrors; the Service Dept. at South Florida Acura; I loved the TL. My cousin's wife got the 2000 without much problems. Me, well it's a different story. There's so many problems but most of all it's the tranny. After about 1 year and less than 20,000 miles, it went (late shifting, over-reving before shifting up, then slamming into gear, slammed so hard the car shaked violently then the TCS turned itself off). It was like a standard tranny with a clutch gone bad. First time I took it to the dealer, told problem was fixed, as soon as I drove away I had to return. Nothing was done. They took had the car for 2 weeks and replaced the tranny, re-surfaced the front rotors due to related serious vibration and brake pulsation. The service dept. is a joke there. They will lie to you so that you must pay for a bad car. Anyway, the worst problem is, even with the new, replaced tranny, the problem is back again after less than a year, again. My lease is up soon, so since Acura sent the 7 yr/100,000 miles extended warranty on the auto tranny and torque converter I guess I'll leave it up to the next poor person who gets it. Strength:
Comfort, power, handling, value.
Weakness:
Transmission, transmission, TRANSMISSION!!! Looked at a great many cars in the category (ie Lexus, Audi, Infiniti etc...) and found the Acura 3.2TL to be the best fit for me in terms of value, looks, feel, etc. Now, after only 24,000 KMs my transmission needs to be replaced!!! I was afraid of that one problem (which I knew existed but which I thought I could avoid in a new model-year). The car is in now the shop for up to two weeks and I'm told the "new" transmission has corrections made to it so as to prevent this serious problem. I'll have to wait and see if that's the case. This, of course, is a BIG downer but I have been totally happy with the car till now and future will tell how my enthusiasm for Acura can be purked up again. |

Strength:
I received standard many things that were options on the Accord so I thought the Acura was a smarter value.
Weakness:
The rattling which comes from all direction in the car. I have taking my car to the dealer three times and will be making my fourth visit on Saturday. I have decided to write a letter to divisional Honda office to see if there is antyhing that can be done. I have not experienced any problems with my transimission except when the TCS is engaged there is a harsh grinding noise. This worries me because of all the other reviews I've read with transmission problems. I know that I will never purchase another Acura. In fact, I am considering trading mine in for an Accord or an Infiniti G35. Don't make the same mistake I made buying a car based on magazine and industry reviews. Definitely look at reviews from consumers. Had I looked at consumer reviews I would never have purchased this car. I purchased my Acura after doing a ton of research. I loved the suspension because it wasn't very loose and I like the idea of feeling like I am in control. I come from a family of Honda Accord and Civic owners who have been very happy so I thought I would be happy in the Acura. Well, I've come to the conclusion that these car magazines and websited must be on Hondas payroll. |

Strength:
Ride comfort, features, reliability.
Weakness:
stereo could be better. Audio conrols on steering wheel look cheesy The new (2004) TL is coming soon, so this is a good time to get a good deal on a 2003 model - couple of hundred over invoice. Great car. All of the features you would ever want, enough room and very comfortable. Not a sports car - if you want "sport" buy a 325, G35 or I guess the type S and be ready to pay approptiate prices and the upkeep. This is more of a "Touring" Higway car that is very comfortable, will last for a long time and not give you many problems. It accelerates fine, but still has the handling of a front wheel driver - a very good, front wheel driver, probably one of the best there is, but still one. Or as I call it 'souped up Accord" - which is a compliment. I think for 27 grand you get what you pay for and anything else in that class would cost you at least 5k more and cost more to run. I like the interior Similar Products Used: 325 |

Acura TL
Strength:
Good head lights. Good exterior looks. Reliability record
Weakness:
needs trip computer. Audio system is weak , desperately needs A-pillar speakers. Excessive wind, road, engine noise. Rattles in dash. Should have side curtain airbags. needs telescoping steering wheel. Any car in this class should have auto-on headlamps. steering wheel controls for radio and cruise should be illuminated and have more functions. Ventilation fan makes noise. Transmission has a long dlay in egaging after the selector is moved. Acceleration from stop or in stop and go traffic is jerky. I purchased my 2003 TL in Nov. 2002 and have about 8000 miles on it. I purchased it mainly because of its reliability records, good ride and resale value . I am somewhat disappointed with this car. It just isn't very exciting and has little or no "pazazz". This car is an adequate Sport Sedan , but should not be referred to as a LUXURY Sport Sedan. I just cant seem to get confortable in this car. I always feel as though I am "reaching" for the steering wheel ( it needs a telescoping steering wheel) and my knees feel to close to the dash. the center arm rest should be higher. The TL is a safe chioce, but not very fun. I wish I would have went with the 325i or G35. |

Strength:
- acceleration, power (this car is fast!!!) - sound (the sub makes the seats shake) - value (no other car in its class gives u all this for this price)
Weakness:
- tranny might fail - fake plastic wood, leather, large steering wheel - standard wheels on the TL-P, look bad The car has been amazing, with great acceleration, sound, everything. The only problem i would have 2 say, is worrying about if the Tranny is going 2 fail. But i doubt it will, since Honda Canada has said that only 2% are affected. |

Strength:
Sweet music from engine as v-tec kicks in. Zero speeding tickets due to anonymous appearance. Xenon headlights. Fun humiliating kids off the line.
Weakness:
Driver's seat squeaks. Wind noise. Sunroof rattles. Honda interior for luxury-class car. Intense paranoia because of other postings regarding tranny failure. Mine works like a watch after 20,000 miles and is not covered under extended transmission warranty. I drove my Vigor to 215,000 and it worked exactly as new. Absolute Best Value in class after serious research. Navi as good as everyone says. Great acceleration throughout rpm range. Complaints about cheap interior are warranted. But superb engine, handling, and electronics trump all. I drove everything else. Infiniti came close, but this car offered best balance of performance & comfort. Zero remorse after 6 months. Weakness:
Poor Paint, Poor Stereo, Undue Road Vibration and Harshness for this Class of Car I think Honda have gotten away from tradition on this one. I have had a number of problems, Brakes (44 K Kilometers), Windshield wipers, Seat Belt warning lights. The brakes were fixed after a fight. The other stuff they will only fix if I can prove a problem. They did give me a set of refinished wheels (corrosion). I did receive a notice that the transmission warranty has been extended. I also think the engine lacks torque (this is masked by the slick transmission). Never again. Run dont! walk to your Infinity or Lexus Dealer Similar Products Used: Prior TL and it was a great car |
