Smooth ride when it works.

Jaguars problems have not changed. The image of a luxary car that needs its own full time mechanic is true. I have owned the XJ6 for less than one year, extremely low mileage, and the car has been nothing but a headache. It has broken down five times n less than a year. Twice with young children traveling. I woul never recommend this car as dependable for a family.

Strength:

Performance, finish

Weakness:

Not good for tall drivers, and traction in snow is very bad.

I bought a low mileage XJR in as-new condition. It has amazing power, and allows you to drive way too fast in complete safety. However, the sport suspension and oversize tires make slow-speed driving and driving in snow difficult. Since it travels so fast with very low revs, there is no braking effect from lifting the foot from the throttle. For anyone over 6' the driver access requires you to enter and exit like Lady Di in a mini-skirt. I think a XJ8 VDP would be a better buy, since I now prefer comfort to performance. But it's a Jag, and I cant help loving it.

Strength:

Excellent ride (best on the road)! Quiet and has reasonable power. Dealer in San Francisco took great care of minor problems free of charge. Many comfortable miles at a bargain price!

Weakness:

Since it's the last year of the "old" Jaguar cars before Ford improved them with the '95 model year, it is mediocre for reliability. Door handle broke ($800 P+L), the bottom half of the passenger dashboard keeps popping out, and the longest time between CHECK ENGINE lights has been 3 months (averages $300 per episode). Start with a wallet full of repair money... If you budget in a few $K in repairs mentally ahead of time, you'll get a feel for the real price of the car.

Jaguar has come a long way in recent years. Their quality has improved quite a bit from the "old days" of needing to hire your own personal mechanic.

The 1994 year XJ6 was the last year before Ford/Jaguar re-designed just about everything for the 1995 model year. Therefore, my 1994 is....well...mediocre. It's better than the earlier 1990s, since Ford had a few years to tweak things here and there on the original Jaguar design.

At $19,000 for a brand-new looking luxury car, I can't complain too much. Way, way, way less expensive than shelling out the $55K some poor fool did when it was new -and- I probably get just as many compliments!

Strength:

Smooth riding with a solid feel, great rear leg room, the trunk is bigger than it seems and the interior is gorgeous wood and leather

Weakness:

I had a trottle problem, the parking brake should have a different location, not the best car for tall people. Handling is not as good as 740i, winter tires have caused it to be more unstable on the highway.

I have had this car for a little over a year now and I have to say that I like it more and more all the time , it is reliable it accelerates fast and has great brakes too, the positraction keeps it straight in snow and all the gadgets (front windshield heating elements) work well, the wooden steering wheel feels great and the sound system sound nice too. The wooden rear seat trays come in handy. My wife loves the exterior look and compared to other cars in this class I think the Jaguar is the most elegant. I recommend this as a great used car (because they`re bargains)

Strength:

Styling, handling, and comfort. This is truly a four door touring car. Trim & fit and finish in this car is of the utmost quality. One of the best sedans ever to be built.

Weakness:

Waited too long to buy one !

I would recomend this car only to people who truly appreciate the driving experience. This car commands respect and owner loyalty, which it gets as soon as you put in some seat time. I cannot believe I spent so much time in a Lexus when this car was available. Dealer service is also incredable.

Model Reviewed: JAGUAR XJ8L

Strength:

Great looking, very reliable(bet you didn't think you would hear reliable in the same sentence as Jaguar. Interior is as beautiful as the exterior. Every gadget you could think of and they all work. Trunk has no lift over - a big plus. Quiet as the Library of Congress. Can really move - 290 horses can get this cat to gallop quickly.

Weakness:

Much more leg room in the back than in the front - inadequate seat travel in the Drivers side. Does not handle crisply - don't feel as secure as you would in many other European cars - especially European cars in its price class. The car is low, not easy to get in and out of.

I leased the Jaguar for two years, at the end of the lease the price of the car will be $30,000. For $30,000 its a great car. The car new costs $56,000. For that kind of money you would be better off with the smaller Mercedes E Class or the BMW 740. Hats off to Ford for turning Jaguar around.

Similar Products Used:

The E Class Mercedes and the BMW 740 are easier cars to live with, can out handle the Jaguar and are very reliable. The Jaguar is the better looking of the three sedans just mentioned.
