Strength:
Engine, Trans, suspension, roomy, awesome stereo, comfortable, stylish
Weakness:
not given the credit it deserves in performance products The Cavalier is a great performer, so much more car than the civic. It's built here in Ohio, and the engine/trans are american made also. The new Ecotec 2.2 is really strong 140hp 150ftlbs of torque, and the stock internals can hanle 280hp without a hickup. The suspension is superb. There just needs to be more aftermarket apps for it... Similar Products Used: honda civic, 1998 Z24, 87 crx si, ford escort(doesnt compare) |

Weakness:
Stereo, Cornering (rear sway). I really like this Z-24. It has 51k on it. There are no squeeks or rattles. The car is very tight. The thing that sold me was the was it drove. This little runts a blast to drive! It must look sporty to others since at most light some screw ball wants to race me! I"m over 6ft and there's lots a room. On trips its comfortable. I did decide to buy an extended warranty for $1300 (3/36). I used it in the 1st 2 weeks for a wheel bearing and a air conditioning compressor. I dont fault the car, had problems with a used caddy too once. Try to find the one made in the USA and not Mexico. Better workmanship I think. Similar Products Used: Dodge Stealth ES |

Chevy Cavalier 4 Dr Sedan
Strength:
Roomy, A lot of trunk space, engine performance, great gas mileage, great acceleration.
Weakness:
It's not a chevy truck :-) There are actually no weaknesses to this great car. The 2002 Cavalier is by far the best acar I have ever driven. The car is very roomy, perfect for those long trips, or the every day drive to work. My cavalier gets great gas mileage, and is very cost efficient. My first car was a 1987 Cavalier, and the car went 280,000 miles with very minimal engine work. I expect the same performance from the 2002 I now own. GM has always done a great job at arranging the engine so it's easy to work on (i.e. oil change, spark plug change, etc.) and this car is no exception. I've owned the car now for 2 months, and I'm looking forward to many years of trouble free driving. Hasn't really failed me, doesn't look too geeky for a 4 door, doesn't burn oil at all,
Weakness:
Rusts like a mofo, alternator can get very loud, I have to grease up the belt every other day in the summer so it'll be quiet enough to not get the attention of the cops, interior light pops off if you hit a medium to large sized bump, my passenger side vent cover popped out the first day I owned it while I was applying Armor All and haven't been able to get it back in since, had to replace the fan motor (in the summer of course) Very little has gone wrong with it since I took over. Like their commercials say, they are very dependable, but kinda dull. Similar Products Used: 86 Pontiac Sunbird (awful) |

Chevy Cavalier Z24
Strength:
Bang for a buck. Loaded with many extras including ground effects side skirts, fog lights, spoiler, crome exhaust tip, 16 inch aluminum wheels, 2.4 L 150 hp engine, and smooth and firm shifting GM 4-speed auto (I miss a 5-speed I used to have with my previous Cav; but, my old Cav is no match for this Z24).
Weakness:
The chin spoiler at the front is so low that you can scrape it when you try to get into the parking area from the road (a little raised parking entry from the raod will be high enough to scrape the lower portion of the chin spoiler if you are not very very careful). This is the second Cavalier. I drove a '95 Cavalier Coupe ( a stripper without any amenity nor a/c) for 7 years. Now, I just purchased a 2002 Cavalier Z24. Because my first Cavalier was the first model year (there was a major revision on Cavalier for the 1995 model), it is interesting that my 2002 Cav Z24 is the last model year (it is kinda cool that I drove the first Cav and am driving the last Cav z24). It is premature to give out the full reviews but so far, the car is doing okay. Nice firm ride (this z24 has a level 2 suspension set up) and a peppy engine (2.4 L, 150 hp for a 2700 lbs. body). It is much solid, powerful compared to my previous base Cav. Similar Products Used: Chevy Cavalier Coupe (1995)--this was a fun car with a 5-speed; but, not enough power from a old fashioned push rod 4 banger. Excellent get up and go...very gutsy for a four banger. Sharp, pretty little car...have had people with money who drive expensive stuff take a sincere interest and ask what my "cute little car" is. I like that it's a generic, inexpensive car and can be fixed by about any mechanic with parts costing comparatively less than other cars..(have not needed any repairs as of yet) I love how much money I'm saving on gas. Excellent factory CD player...no skips and great sound. Great heat and AC. Nice tight manuverability, very fun to drive, bunny quick. Has a foldable backseat for bigger cargo area...and has easy to get to anchor clips for car seats(really helps if you have to put a kid in one) Running lights are a great idea where I live..and this car has them..increased safety. Got a nail in my tire at a constuction site...the tire change kit was complete and easy to use..took 10 minutes. I like the antilock brakes on this one way better than some older cars with antilocks I've driven...this thing stops on a dime on pavement...antilocks only kick in if you slide on gravel or ice. (Big improvement Chevy..thank you) Handles VERY nicely in ice and snow. Tough little car gets up my 600 foot u
Weakness:
It's a little car on the road with maniacs in SUV's...great safety features, but it's still a little car. I don't like that the cup holders don't fit a monster size coke, and I don't like that having a drink in there blocks the climate controls a little. I don't like the tweedy fabric of the seats...it's pretty and comfortable, but it's a dog hair magnet when I take my dogs to the vet. The check engine light when the gas cap isn't tightened scared me to death when I first got it...made me think there was something wrong when there wasn't (you have to tighten your gas cap or the check engine light comes on....tighten it and it goes away, part of emission controls, it's in the manual) Air conditioner almost too cold on high...need to turn it down or freeze to death. Great little car for the money. Lots of safety features for a little car. Amazing gas milage. Heater that can warm your coffee and an Air Conditioner that makes Ice Cubes. Speedy zippy little thing. Very happy with my sharp looking candy apple Cavalier. Similar Products Used: Dodge Lancer...moneypit car from hell. Strength:
Good looks, but that's about all.
Weakness:
Horrible handling, frequent problems with the radiator, piss-poor AC. Typical american car. Typical american wanna-be sports car. Seems to be the premier choice of college kids. It will probably last you through college, and then you might as well give it some poor sucker who doesn't know what he just bought. This car is a death trap! Many people I know(especially girls) have died behind the wheel of a Cavalier. They are very unsafe cars! If you want to spend about $5,000 more, buy a Civic, and take care of it. Cav Z24
Strength:
Good looks, but is a style that is becoming outdated. Great front fascia design though, with well placed fog lights. Cornering, handling, better than average. I like FACTORY sunroofs, this one is place well and is wide enough. Temp and battery gauges, don't get a car without one. These let you know impending problems sooner (not later, like 'IDIOT' lights that come on at some unspecified breakdown time). Good gas mileage for this 2.4 liter, 150Hp, 2600 lb car.
Weakness:
Car made with Non-reliable OEM GM parts. That is just facts, and is part of what makes up the statistics for reliability studies. It seems that it is not so much faulty manufacturing as it is faulty designs. They can Six Sigma to manufacturing against defects all they want. If you have a designed part that only is capable of giving you a limited amount of time before breakdown, what do you think is eventually going to happen? Car is designed with NO TRANSMISSION OIL DIP Stick. Say WHAT!!! Car design with this 4-cylinder engine has Water Pump placed in an area where if it has to be replaced, the mechanic is forced to take many hours to do it, taking off engine parts just to get to it. Re-f&$*ing- diculous GM!! Very dissapointed in this , as Consumer Reports reliability surveys are accurate. Read them, folks! Beleive in the statistics they give you and accept the fact that you gamble anyway with or against the odds. Whether you get a high reliability-rated car and you have problems with it; or you go ahead and get one with low reliability but the car has been the best you've had. You gamble, but at least take an educated gamble. Cavs have shown to improve to average reliability, only in recent 2 years. I happened to have been lucky enough to have talked to the previous owner's Mom and she never had any problems with this Z24 I bought used at 25K miles. The problem is though that after 30,000 miles the Z24 seems to succomb to its less-than-quality GM parts. So get the extended warranty, its WORTH IT!! Have driven this car 5,000 miles since I purchased it. Drove long distances from Pittsburgh to Boston, Boston to Outer Banks, North Carolina (Cape Hatteras), Cape Hatteras thru NC, to West Virginia, back to Pittsburgh. Water pump leak (causing temperature rise, would have led to overheat if I did not have a Temperature Gauge to know it), fortunately replaced on last day of extended warranty. Watch and know the pattern of your cars' operating tempertures, folks. Modern Chevrolet in Winston Salem N.C., is an outstanding group of people and servicemen. Buy your car from them folks, if you must have a Chevrolet. I did not get out of the clear though, passenger side window stops to operate any more. $400 in parts and labor, window motor and master switch replacement. Now at this point, out of warranty, and had to pay. What is a young, 30,000 mile 1999 car doing with having these kinds of problems, when you pay thousands of dollars for it? And I really got a good deal. Similar Products Used: Nissan Altima (was much more reliable). If you must have a Chevy, look at the Impala or Monte Carlo. They seem to be having better reliability ratings than the Cavalier. Six cylinder engines ma |
