Strength:

safe car,great looks, okay stereo

Weakness:

takes dings and pings really good. chevy should really rethink the aluminum they use in the cavalier.

My chevy is okay to say the least i wish i had a Z24 though. I'm leasing it for five years from Fairways in Hazleton which i got a great deal in September. its a great looking car , fire engine red, because im a blond *lol* and its very good on gas...which is definitely a plus for me because i drive back and forth to college in wilkes barre every day. its good in the snow and ice too it acted like a jeep up on interstate 81 this winter and it made me feel safe.

Strength:

Cheap to buy, easy to find parts for, reasonably economical on gas if properly maintained.

Weakness:

Poor performance and handling; seats are not terribly comfortable on long trips; noise that comes from everywhere (engine, road & body noises) at highways speeds. At this age, you'll be doing major repairs often, especially expensive front-end repairs.

You can't go too wrong with these old cars. My 2-door hatchback has decent cargo space with the back seat down, and they are so common that parts will be easily found. The gas mileage is reasonable, as well (I spend around CAD 20.00 a week in fuel). Just don't expect any kind of performance or handling. You'll still pay quite a bit less on repairs than your payments would be on a new car, but, of course, you don't get the reliability of a newer vehicle. Each season will yeild a 400-800 dollar repair bill at a regular shop.

cheap parts

Weakness:

i'm having to buy too many of those cheap parts. plus it doesn't corner well.

well, i bought this as a work car and it's a good little car for that. i bought it because i knew parts would be cheap. i had to replace the clutch slave cylinder(or throw-out bearing). and now i need to work on the a/c. blew the seals on the compressor. good thing parts are fairly inexpensive, huh? but some of that is to be expected as it has 97000 miles on it. besides that it's an okay car. though the tail end is too light making for lousy cornering. but hey, you get what you pay for right? not bad for the money..

Strength:

Great handeling, customizabel, sporty look, nice low RPM torque, very reliable, hard to kill

Weakness:

2.2 engine begins to "slow" acceleration at about 50mph, dash rattles on bumps. Any mods, such as new stereo unit, costs because the dash is a one peice unit.

I Love this car!!!! I bought it as a program car, and I have had 0 problems with it so far. Iy handles great, it looks sporty, great take offs from stops, and is semi-customizable. I just bought a Bomex Body Kit for it, an Aluminum spoiler, new clear corner lights, and a Turbo Charger(don''t tell my insurance company or dealership, lol)

Strength:

Good handling, great gas mileage, nice body design, nice colour of paint ("ultra silver"), low maintenance, lots of fun.

Weakness:

Weird exhaust rattle, uncomfortable front seats lack support especially when cornering, seatbelts stopped automatically retracting after a week or two, speakers too crappy for use with such a nice factory sound system, backseat latch squeaks when driving (very annoying). All minor problems though! Plus the Chevy and dealer logos on the body we found very tacky, so we had them removed!

Great Car! It was our first ever brand new vehicle, bought with 9 km on it, and in 9 months we have put on over 20,000 km. Reliability excellent. Love the warranty coverage but have never had to use it. Good handling, cool looking car. No major problems whatsoever. Great mileage: 500km per tank for city/highway driving, and 640km per tank on just the highway. Added a K&N air filter and a Flowmaster muffler just to customize things a bit, and tinted the rear windows. This car is fabulous. Plan to have it for a long time. Proud to drive it. No more embarrassing beaters for us!

Strength:

Fast pickup from a stop, CD player and good speakers, nice color/style, standard ABS, rear window defroster, smooth handling, pwr steering, good amount of storage space and leg room

Weakness:

Acceleration gets more difficult over 50mph, original tires had to be replaced (at 34,000) bc of cracking, clearcoat peeling in some spots, poor crash test ratings especially on driver''s side door

Only had it about a week so far, but I''m surprised by all the negative reviews of this car. Surely there must be some lemons out there, but this car seems to be stable so far. I''m not saying this is the best car in the world. If you want a Corvette you have to pay for a Corvette, but for the money this seems to be a decent value. I think if I was to buy this car new I''d definitely invest in pwr locks and windows. The price I paid includes an extended warranty.

All of the above and more (I am just too frustrated to think of them all)

Bought brand new. Within 5 months, it was towed to dealership BUT couldn''t find problem, duh?!. Within 2 yrs had front axel, clutch, transmission seal, oil seal all replaced. I only drive 30 miles a day to work! It now has only 30,000 miles on it and it''s still runs crappy. Never again. Look elsewhere please!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Strength:

I get to return this so called "built like a rock" sinker at the end of my lease and NEVER EVER have to deal with Chevrolet and/or GM ever again.

Weakness:

Cracked head gasket, whining engine, whistling air conditioner vents, constant creeking noise, clunking sound when turning steering wheel poor stereo system. Extremely poor overall rating in product quality and service. Great investment if your looking for a way to waste your hard earned money.

If Chevrolet/GM offered me a brand new Cavalier for FREE, I would keep on walking. I leased a brand new 1999 Cavalier that ran hot and leaked anti-freeze from day one. The car was brought in 3 times for service, once TOWED. Turns out my "brand new" car had a cracked head gasket. The car had MAJOR work performed on it, however, 5 service attempts later, the car still leaks anti-freeze, runs hot and has developed a clunking noise when you turn the steering wheel. This in addition to the annoying high pitched whistle that comes from the vents when you have the air conditioner on. And lets not forget to mention the constant creeking sounds the car makes. Chevrolet and GM claim the car operates fine and rather than admit there''s a problem, they told me "when the car leaks, just add more anti-freeze". When they were shown the temperature gauge that constantly reads 3/4 and above, they responded "ALL cars run that hot". Obviously, Chevrolet is so used to complaints; even THEY gave up on this car. I''m very, very unhappy with my Cavalier. Next time, I will spend the extra money and not be dazzled by the attractive cheap price of Chevrolet. My advise: Please check out any other options you may have and stay clear of Chevrolet; especially the Cavalier. There''s a reason why they''re so cheap. You really do get what you pay for.

Strength:

On the new car, I think the styling is better than other cheapy cars, particularly the coupe. I think the $295 MSRP for the 15" aluminum wheels and touring tires is money well-spent, appearance and performance wise, over the 14" tires and cheapo plastic wheel covers. The RDS radio and CD are the best sound I''ve ever had in a car (I''ll admit this even though I''ve only listened to Carly Simon so far! Hey, I''m almost 44!) I like the easy-entry sliding passenger seat. A friend''s ''95 Explorer two-door doesn''t even return to the original position after being moved up, like the cheaper Cavalier does! Overall, I think the car is terrific for the money, particularly with the current $3,000 rebate.

Weakness:

None on the new car...on my ''97, piston slap noises, warped brake rotors, beginning to leak some oil at 130,000 miles, rattly wheel covers. But I liked it enough overall to buy the new one today!

Picked my dark green coupe, 2.2 L with 5-speed, 15" tires and aluminum wheels (like last year''s Z24), rear spoiler, cruise, premium six-speaker stereo w/CD, tape, and RDS radio, for $11,700 today. Sticker was $15,310 but a $3,000 rebate and several hundred off besides that. A grand less than the new ''97 I bought in Sept. 96, similarly equipped. The ''97 I turned in today had 130,000+ miles...gripes include piston slap when cold (told it was normal some time ago and never did cause any problems), bolt-on wheelcovers that rattle (I put two-sided tape on the seven prongs of each wheelcover a couple times a year, it worked!), and beginning to leak some oil underhood (I put STP in after each oil change at about 100,000--could I have been overfilling and forcing it out doing this??) The car remained good looking and comfortable, although I did have some front end noise starting to happen over bumps, and the rotors needed replaced any day now (this is the second set). Overall, though, reliable and cheap to run--35mpg at 70 mph.

Strength:

Power, Affordability, Looks, Torque, Stock tires (keep rotating them and they''ll last long (50km).

Weakness:

Handling, Braking, Interior, stock stereo and speakers, seats uncomfortable for tall drivers and turns, cup holders unadjustable, no coin pocket, no indoor trunk release, dash rattles.

Have had the car for 2.5 years (50kms). The only problem I had was a faulty passenger side windshield wiper after 45kms. I changed the brake pads at 30kms only because I drive this car real hard. Reliability is excellent. It can take a beating. I drove a Corolla the same way before this, and the engine blew. This car looks good, goes fast, is torquey, and cheap. I recommend the car for the price/performance ratio. I don;t however, recommend any of the engines besides the 2.4LDOHC (it can take a beating) unlike the other models.
