Strength:

it is a reliable car great first car and it keeps me occupied finding custom parts for it wich is hard to find. breaks great for 30-0 mph anything over that you will not slow down.
plus the car has a fold down back seat to get to the trunk so if you ever need to pull over and sleep (wink..wink)its rather roomy

Weakness:

noise-the under coating is not thick enough it lets in alot of road noise
breaking- i just got into an accident because the breaks were not addiquate
dash- comeing apart
107 mph- the factory gov will not let you hit 110 or above

this car has taken care of me and i love it. plus its my first car and only transportation. and the back seats look small but have alot of room.

Strength:

Good on gas. Adjustable speed windshield wipers, Cruise control, sunroof, nicely placed cupholders, good insturment panel, looks sharp when washed.

Weakness:

Had to replace transmission at 65,000 miles. Wipers sometimes really suck, like in the winter, spring, summer, and autumn. Power window motor had to be replaced three times, leaks oil, stock stereo was crap, and driver's seat broke and finding a replacement is a total pain in the arse.

Looks pretty on the showroom floor, and for a few months after you buy it, then everything starts to break, one thing after another. A money pit on wheels is what the '82 to '94 Cavaliers are. Good mileage, that's about it. I should have bought the Honda Accord, damn it. This will be the last General Motors car I ever own, next time I'm buying German or Japanese.

Had a 1989 Cavalier 2 door before the '93, which was garbage, God knows why I bought another one. Both $hit cars for the most part that look nice and get good mileage.

Strength:

sporty looking, I have a nice sunroof which I added on..Good on gas and that is about it...

Weakness:

Has been a pain in my *** since buying it brand new in 98.. One thing after another.. Major to minor problems.. Never ending headaches..! At onset of buying car, began to stall out alot.. constant and continuious brake crunching sounds/click in turning... Recalls on this and that, alot of them electrical.. Battery replaced at 30,000 miles.. Go figure!!
Engine sounds/ whining with accelerations of 30-50 mph. Recalled and then replaced the whole Rack and Pinon steering system. Have replace all rotors and drums at only 50,000 miles.. This whining sound in engine /c acceleration has been a real problem.. Has had whole transmission overhauled at 50,000 due to the whining.. still having the problem... And it is still under 2 more yrs of GMPP warranty protection plan, but I can't get to protection from GMPP... when transmission was OHauled in Utah 2 months ago..they never put on or never tightened the lower Dogbone count bolt ) which caused the upper engine mount to break and become distorted..!! Now GMPP is telling me that I have to be reponsible and pay for this 2nd transmission serivice to find out the problem.. ( the whining sounds) with acceleration.. NO Way.. Will I pay for this.. GMPP service is horrible and is being unfair.. This car is still under an additional 2 yrs Major guard protection warranty and they will not Abide by this law.. .I have hired and attorney! and I will let them deal with this one.. I just want my car fixed and Right..!
The problems go on and on and on..my suggestion is to NOT buy one of these cars, not ever.. You will be in for a real heartache... the longer you have it, the more it will have problems... Interior sucks bad, cheaply made and built, Thrown together like a straw house... !
Many, too many complaints to continue here... so I will NOT...!
Get rid of this car asap..!

Honestly and truly cheap made and taylored car.. .Nothing good about this car at all.. Only the gas mileage and to speak last about the Warranty, What warranty? GMPP General Motors Protection plan is an absolute joke..

Very unhappy and dis-appointed with this 98 cavalier!

Strength:

It gets good gas mileage, and the stock speakers kick ass with a good price stero. The rest of you idiots who complain about the speakers must have some fu kin' cheap aftermarket stero. I have a pioneer head unit. Its a feaking 1995 and it still hauls ass. The rest of you must have some voodoo curse, because mine starts everytime, and runs everytime. The car is easily modified for racing equipment. Mine probably lasts longer because I didn't get the cheap ass model like the rest of you. Its still running great. Just needs new struts because of wear and tear.

Weakness:

Cigarette lighter is in a wacked place. hard to charge cell with it.

Its a great car. I run my car really hard. i red line it all the time, amd i have no problem doing 115. I read another review about him taking car of it, and maybe maybe it will be okay...thats a bunch of bullshavick. I just do an oil change every 2000, and no matainence required. The only ting I was pissed about are my tires, and brakes, but thats not the cars fault. You have to change these things when you have so many miles on it. Mines a 1995 and it runs better than your 1999's? Geez you got problems buddy. So far three sompanies want my car for racing applications. If you don't like it buy a Honda. I am sticking with my baby.

Strength:

Has some nice accessories, came pretty well equipped with power door locks, a/c, cruise. Nice looking, good gas mileage.

Weakness:

Oil consumption is excessive; has a lot of oil leaks; wheel bearing went; have had a lot of repairs, unnecessarily, in my view point. Radiator is not well protected in front end mishaps. Oil changes by owner are difficult, if not impossible, due to location of oil filter. I am having some major problems with misfiring, had to replace head gasket, etc. Not at all happy with it. It was highly recommended by Consumer Reports for its low repair maintenance, but have not found that. The driver side door was never adjusted properly, even after taking it in to dealer. Console cover latch breaks constantly. Cup holders stink.

I will never purchase another one. I have not enjoyed it at all. Was not pleased with oil leaks, the way it burned oil, etc. Not pleased with the little details of the car. It will be paid off in August. Was hoping to keep it for a few more years, but looks like the car payments will now being going into repairs.

The Toyota that I had previous to this car was still kicking at 200,000 miles with minimum repairs. Does not compare, as far as I am concerned, to Japanese cars. Will never buy another American car.

Strength:

I bought it last year, my first car. Great V6 engine, powerful and fast considering it's auto. Good for "extra"s such as air conditioning, stereo, tilt, cruise control. Picks up speed really nicely on highway.Easy to park, very small yet strong. Sporty and fun to drive.

Weakness:

Way too small back seats, at least for my German Shepherds. Everything except for engine and transmission seemed to break down, starting with lights, stereo, motor for windows, etc. Little cheap repairs but too many. Also the body is nasty, seems to get more rust day by day.

Great beginner car. Not good for lots of dogs or large family, due to lack of interior space, however it is bigger than it looks like from outside. Not too good looking, due to tendency to rust fast, but fun to drive. Lots of power and speed, great engine. Cheap to buy and to repair. Safe, strong, fast and reliable if you just want something to go every day. Mine has over 200km on it, it runs like a dream but it looks ugly. What a pity the exterior is not as nice as what's under the hood!

Strength:

Gas milage is somewhat acceptable

Weakness:

High failure rate of electrical and mechanical parts which should be coverd
under a recall.

My winshield wipers stuck in the up postion and the dealer wanted approx 76.00 to replace to module even though the Chev S10 that has the same system and the same issue was fixed under a recall.

My ignition switch had to be replaced before 60,000 miles

My brakes even when new still activate the anti lock at small pressures
which makes me feel like I wont be able to stop at the intersection.

My head gasket leaked

My no 1 cylinder spark plug insulator kept cracking at least one a week
which all the plugs were purchased from the dealer, replced 5 total at 8.00 a pop.

My timing chain broke which bent a valve that had to be replaced. 50.00

My passenger seat broke so when you apply the brakes it flies forward

Intermittant switch issues on the stearing colum.

3 alternators replaced and a starter.

All the above before 70,000 miles

Strength:

D*mn Fast! It moves like a rocket and still gets good gas mileage. It's also a very good looking car, Has an awsome stereo, has alot of standard features, and it seems to handle much more like a big car than the competitors do.

Weakness:

First off, the seats are extremely uncomfortable and I can't find a pillow anywhere that can make up for it! The seats feel supportive and comfortable at first, but give em about 20 minutes and you'll be in pain! Some other problems are:

. Cheap plastic everywhere inside.
. Lots of squeaks and creeks from the dash and sunroof.
. Huge heavy doors, hard to get in and out of.
. The anti-lock breaks are not refined like the ones you get in other cars.
. Horrible resale value.
. Alignment never seems right - but this is true of most front wheel drive cars I've driven.

I've only had it for two months so there's no more to tell, but I fear that if its like this at two months, then ...

I ended my lease early on my 2000 Prizm because there was a defect that the dealership (HUBBLER CHEVROLET) couldn’t fix. I let them try 8 times, and then I got an attorney. The settlement bought me out of the lease, and in an effort to keep from paying for every little scratch and ding; I bought another car from them, a Z24. I figured I would sell in a couple of years and buy a Toyota, but then I wrecked it! The car has an awful blind spot that can only be compensated for by sticking one of those little mirror bubble thingy's on your side view. I was very impressed with the look and power of this car, but the seats make me miserable. And even with my GM discount this thing will take at least three years to be right side up on the payments. There are much better cars out there for less money, and unless you somehow think the seats are comfortable, I would not recommend this car to you or anyone.

Similar Products Used:

2000 Prizm LSI - The Prizm is a much more refined car than the Cavalier, but that makes sense considering Toyota built it. It was much more comfortable and better on gas, but had more irritating vibration and pull in the steering, and didn’t look as good.
