Strength:

Fair pickup for a 4 cylinder. Sporty style. Comfortable front seats. Good price. Good first car.

Weakness:

Noisy suspention, front and rear. Fuel pump died while crossing train tracks. Trunk leaked rusted all kinds or stuff. Attenna becomes loose too often. Many issues with the seatbelts. ABS kicks in way too often. Feel every bump in the road. Steering wheel never straight. Service would fix half the problems, look at the others and say there is no problem.

Too many problems with this car... I will not buy another one. Looking at a new Grand Am GT though!

1987 Grand Am. Never had a better car. Drove it 10 years before the engine blew. And I drive hard!

Model Reviewed: Cavalier Z24 5 Speed Manual

Strength:

Very good performance - I've beaten the snot out of numerous Civic Si and Integra owners (stock!)
Nice styling - great job w/ the 16" wheels
Nice stereo - go w/ the extra speakers
Easy to read gauges
Good gas mileage
Need I say more...???

Weakness:

Not much to say! I would definetly go with the 5 Speed over the automatic, although the 4 speed auto does hold its own. Also, the clutch can get caught under the driver's side floormat if not careful. That's about it.

I have owned -

1991 Cavalier Coupe VLS - 5 Speed Manual
1996 Cavalier Sedan - 5 Speed Manual
2000 Cavalier Coupe - 5 Speed Manual
2001 Cavalier Coupe Z24 - 4 Speed Automatic
2001 Cavalier Coupe Z24 - 5 Speed Manual

The last one is the best, but the others had no shortcomings. Don't be stupid and pay for a Japanese import that could never stand up to a Cavalier Z24 in performance and styling. As for the VTEC crap - what marketing! All it is, is variable valve timing. Give me a break! I love these Civic lowriders that spend $50 for an exhaust tip so they can pretend their car goes really fast. vroom vroom - all 106 horsepower! Ha! I'll be laughing at the finish line waiting for them to reach 10 miles per hour! Go with the Cavalier, preferably the Z24 - with 5 Speed Manual.

Similar Products Used:

Honda Civic Si - lacks in comparison, so much less power than the Cavalier
Toyota Corolla LE - once again weak in the poop
Dodge Neon - better than the above two, but still can't beat a Z24

Strength:

-Great gas mileage
-once it gets going it gets going fast
-ABS works good
-Lots of leg room for front 2 seats
-good trunk room
-good handling
-dependable, I beat the crap outta it for 100K with no problems
-no major problems with any of the major parts
-good body style
-BETTER THAN ANY FOREIGN CAR

Weakness:

-accelorates slowly
-only a 4-cyl
-Tranny is slow to upshift
-shincy interior (things fall apart)
-everyone and their sister has one

Great car to buy a first time driver for a number of reasons. It doesn't have a big fast engine is one. It won't fall apart and it is reliable. They are easy to rebuild if theyre in an accident. Great value car.

Similar Products Used:

never used anything similar to it but I can garentee that it is better than any foreign car

Strength:

2.4 liter engine is peppy, gets you from a to b quickly and economically. At times car is even fun to drive.

Weakness:

Terrible blind spots ( I nearly ran into pedestrian in a crosswalk despite repeated sweeping scan of crosswalk. The power window motor on drivers side door is bad and dealer wants >$300 to replace it. Needed timing chain, sprockets, and associated repairs at 61K miles! Another $900.00 Leaking power steering hose cost another $185.00, and I can go on and on. Vehicle fogs up easily and is very noisy inside. Brakes suck. They will frequently lock up despite the ABS and seems to happen at low speeds more frequently. The trunk is great for holding small things like grocery bags (I think it will hold about 40!), but because of it's short length you will have to put almost everything else in the back seat.

This week my 97 Cavalier (61k mi) is at the shop twice for repairs of various manufacturing (cheap, poor quality) defects. The low price and normal rebates on new Cavaliers mask the unforseen buget busting repairs required to keep it running. Being employed for 17 years as an Engineering Test Technician I suggest you PASS on this vehicle. It is not designed to last even 100,000 miles without major repairs. My repair bill this week is $1,800.00 Ouch! So, if they (GM) offer a $5,000.00 rebate on the $15,000.00 car understand that they (GM) will get it back in repair costs to the owner. Do NOT buy a Cavalier if you intend to keep it more than 3 years or 50,000 miles. Listen to me, I break things for a living!

19?? Plymouth Volare - "Volare...whoaaaaa" Piece of junk college car. Towed it out of a garage, paid $1.00 for it. Drove it 20,000 miles. Sold it to new car dealer for $300.00. Ha! He couldn't even get $100 for it a month later!
2000 Olds Intrigue - Very nice ride and handling. Great for hilly, high speed corners and just a blast to own thus far.
Engine hauls butt. Yes, with this car you can pull out in front of anything, stomp down on the accelerator and not piss them off. Boys, you know what I'm talking about.

Strength:

have had for 3 and 1/2 years - good pick up in engine, I pass cars on hills easily - was first surprising quality and is still there

Weakness:

did not have problem with clutch for first 2.5. years, now something wierd about it at 41,000 mi. - the knobs to control window cheap as heck - cranked off (with normal regular use) in first year

I rate it as average though b/c hard to turn and clutch after 3 years. Hard to get out of seat in front, the door frame cut to far back to make an easy exit and the doors on a slight incline do not stay open, and when you are not looking can slam shut on you - careful there. A bit too high in the back for view. The pick up was worth it though.

Strength:

Peppy little engine, Looks hot when clean (black)Front end looks better on 95 and up to 99. sound system isn't too bad. Handles ok too

Weakness:

WATER PUMP!!!!!!!!!! RATTLES! It took the dealership an entire week to find the rattle...if you have a squeek in your dash have your motor mounts lubed, this will take it away, Drives like a 12,000 dollar car no doubt!
If your going to complain about this ride than get off your wallet and buy
a more expensive car that caters to the consumer who has issues!

We also have a Jimmy SUV so I can't really compare...For the buck this car performs.

Strength:

It's small, good gas mileage, cute, complete chick car. I haven't had many technical problems with it so far.

Weakness:

My defrost vent squeaks when I'm on a bumpy road, I've had to replace the fuel injector, also there's a hole in the transmission pan, and the air conditioner quit working. It's a 4 cylinder, and the pick-up on take off is just that.

All in all it's been a pretty good car, I've only had it since September of 1999, and not had to replace many things.
