Strength:
Styling, space. Ok on gas, available options.
Weakness:
The 2.7L V6 is weak and unresponsive. The transmission shifts at high limits which increases heat and wear & tear. Alternator is too small for this vehicle. Lights are constantly blinking with the balance of the engine. Front and rear windshields are way too big and the wipers can't keep up when it's downpouring. Expensive to repair with minor collision. Overall my wife and I were impressed with the styling and spacious design of our 99 Intrepid. We took it for a short spin around the neighborhood before deciding to purchase. We bought our car with the 2.7L V6 @ 65K, and since had it in for repairs about 5 times. First episode was for a faulty gas gauge. (went in 3 times for this) My last episode was the replacement of the short block. My car was dragged in to the dealership thanks to AAA on July 30th. I got it back on Friday Oct. 4. Seems It's been in the shop more than on the road. I wouldn't consider buying another one with the same engine. Seems to have ample power. Power windows/locks, mirrors. Nice armrest/storage bin. Interior ergonomics are fine for me. Good trunk space/cabin room. BIG difference from my '96 3cyl metro ;)
Weakness:
Where to begin........ 1. Bought car used 2. Kept overheating and leaking anti-freeze. 2. Had to have ENGINE REPLACED TWICE due to overheating, (within 2 months after purchase!!) 3. All 4 doors squeak like hell. 4. Factory deck squeals when playing tapes, won't accept ANY cd/tape adapters for portable cd players. When I tried to put in my old Pioneer deck I discovered that for a boat this size I had only 5.25 inches of depth in which to mount a 6.5 inch deep unit, (Even my Metro had more space than this.... maybe Dodge uses the enormous air ducts for secret NASA wind-tunnel experiments... 5. The rotors suck,... every time I stop it feels like I'm doing the Humpty-Dance. 6. The drivers side windshield wiper is totally ineffective.... The spring is too slack. Compounding the problem is a windfoil riveted to the wiper arm which under influence of the slack spring pulls the arm AWAY from the windshield anytime I do 45+ mph..... i.e. Don't drive in the rain. 7. Have had the engine make a LOUD thump on ignition after turning the car off w/ a/c on. Nice car for trips with lots of room and good passing power. I would really love this car if it worked the way Dodge says it's supposed to. Biggest problem has been the overheating which resulted in 2 engine swaps. I'm looking to part with this nice but inconsistent vehicle. Based on my friends any my experience I'm not too sure about purchasing another Dodge product....HOWEVER I'm looking at a sweet '97 sebring jxi, (has mitsu motor) but I understand many of these suck also..... maybe I'll just buy a Honda and be done with it. Strength:
The 3.5 has plenty of power. Roomy enough for the family. Huge trunk. Comfortable. Nice looking. Good handling. Reliable.
Weakness:
Door hinges all make noise. Passenger side airbag is curling up on the edges. It also has a lot of road noise. The paint on plastic behind rear doors peels. Alloy Wheels have clear coat that cracks and falls off, but it looks better without. This has been a great car. It has 131,000+ miles, and still going strong. Other than wrecking it twice, I haven't had to replace anything on it yet. Everyone always volunteers me to drive, because they love riding in my car. When I first bought it, there was a popping noise in the front end while turning, but it went away. Most of the parts are reasonably priced too, except for headlights, and headlight mounts. I bought a hood, 2 fenders, bumper, headlight, turn signal, condensor, radiator, cooling fans, and a few smaller parts for about $1000. I have heard of some cars bumpers costing almost as much as that. Similar Products Used: 1988 Bonneville, 1995 Grand Am, 1996 Dodge Intrepid, 1997 Olds Cultlas Supreme, |

Everything else. First week after purchase something went wrong with the driver's seatbelt. They provided me with a rental for a week. Don't park this car in the sun if it's over 70 degrees, it won't start if you do. Not until it gets dark and cools off, even if that's 10 hours later. Car would start/stop 5 times till some kind of anti-theft element kicked in, then it wouldn't even turn over. Had car in to dealer many times for this, they had no idea or couldn't make it happen for them, so their technicians, apparently unable to diagnose anything unless their computer tells them what to think, just sent the car back with a shrug. After almost 4 years, I think they may have finally fixed this problem, but I haven't been able to test it for sure due to the weather. Windows, had to have them fixed a couple times (and how come, when both were nonfunctional at the same time, was one under warranty and one wasn't?? still haven't figured that one out). Transmission problems, heater/AC problems as many of you described, sensors needing replacing, hundreds of dollars for a serpentine belt, etc. The latest in this series of misadventures is the car refusing to start tonight, on my way to wor I don't know if I feel better or worse after reading these reviews. I'm obviously in good company, so many of us having similar problems. But I feel pretty stupid that Dodge suckered us all. It's evident they knew about these problems, but of course nothing was mentioned. Aside from the misery of having one thing after another go wrong with the car is the attitude we get from the dealer: gosh, gee, don't know what's wrong, no codes on our diagnostic equipment, can't figure out what to do, that'll be $50. While I have managed to put 80,000 on the car, it hasn't been easy! Yes, like most of you, I love the styling, and when it runs, it's fun to drive. But that's the problem, it doesn't run as often as it should. Similar Products Used: No other Dodges in my history or my future. In fact, I'll be buying imports from here on out. Even my 65 Sunbeam wasn't this much trouble! |

these cars are lemons! tires wear out quickly, driver side window out of align and fails. front end parts wear out quickly. I talked with many engine rebuilders and the engines are flawed and seize up. Chrysler denies and won't back up product. Don't buy this car! overall engineering transmission engine A/C is best on the market, bar none style("It looks like a bar of soap, Dad") handling - cornering, steering, power very comfortable for 6'4" Texas FatBoy
Weakness:
battery is a bi**h to change; be ready to remove the wheel to do it glare on front windscreen (due to angle) wish it rode like a caddie; I'd be in car heaven Dodge Intrepid ES 3.2L w/autostick. 89K miles. 50%/50% hiway/stop&go. Medium-heavy "footed". Drive 75-85 mph most of time when on open hiway. Relatively smooth ride, fairly quiet. Dodge needs to work on this. NO problems. NONE. NADA. Everything works; unbelievable. Other information: ---------------------- Use Castrol Syntec 5-50 w/Duralube (go ahead, laugh), change every 8-9k miles. Changed trans fluid @45K. Changed struts at 88K, battery @ 2.5 years - I consider normal wear items; used aftermarket struts, now car handles even better than new (Goodyear tires). Still significant front brake pad left, rear will go another 30K easy. Engine has same power; actually runs better now that it's broken in. Transmission smooth as silk. Get 26.5 avg mpg @ 75mph w/AC on, flat hiway I don't use autostick feature to conserve clutch pads, but it's lots of fun. The brochure said "the engine is built so well it will probably never leak." - I scoffed; 85K later, guess what - NOT ONE LEAK I SWEAR TO GOD. Awesome A/C, and in Dallas Texas Heat (large condenser with two elecric fans is why) I'm buying another one when time comes; no, I'm not w/ Chrysler, and they had PLENTY of lemons in their time. Very roomy back seat leg room and enormous trunk. mileage in low-mid 20's.
Weakness:
Unreliable transmission. Needs re-programming while under warranty and re-building when out. Every 20k to 30k miles??? Note this is the sport model with 16"tires. Both of my neighbors have the Chrysler version of Intrepid and have had trans replaced under warranty. Transmission! Dealer re-programmed transmission under warranty at 20k and 50k for shifting problems. Then dealer rebuilt trans at about 75k. Dodge reluctantly warrantied the parts only. I had to pay for labor aprox $500. Now car has 110k needs another transmission. $2000 for rebuild at repair shop. Dealer wanted $3000 to swap it out. Also fuel pump went out twice. Engine computer and power windows went out. All covered by Dodge warranty. |

Strength:
reliability, engine performance, comfort, the ability to upset spoiled rich kids in v6 mustangs
Weakness:
maybe some hubcaps that stay on I bought this car with 150 thousand miles on it and it ran great then and still runs great now with 194 thousand on it. It only has the 3.3 165 horse power engine but it will school most other v6 cars... especially v6 mustangs ';). It rides very nice yet it is sporty. One would almost think they were in an eclipse or something with the way in handles. I drive it to Kansas about once a month and it makes the trip faithfully and it really doesn't use that much gas. It has been a very good car and I would recomend it to anyone seeking a fairly cheap sporty and reliable car. One problem is that in never liked to keep the hubcaps... it always lost them right after I put new ones on. The car is white so it looks like unmarked police car without hubcaps... I've had fun with that. But on a side not I call in my granny car with attitude, because it is four door but acts like a little rice burning hotrod.
