Strength:

This care is roomy and comfortable. It has great acceleration and hadling. It is great in traffic or on the open road. It starts right up even in the chilly Ohio mornings.

Weakness:

I think the cooling system is a problem because I have heard of many others having to replace theirs also. Fortunately, it was covered by my extended warranty. I live in the cold weather and the car creaks and groans until it warms up. I will need to replace the transmission soon as it is shimmying at speeds between 30-40 mph's.

I drove my car off the lot six years ago and have not regretted it for a minute. (It has over 90,000 miles now.) This is a great car with only a few weaknesses. I will definately think about buying another one when I choose to get rid of this one.

Strength:

I like the styling and roomy interior. I like the 214 H.P. engine lots of pep. I am 6'1" so I like the headroom (better than my old Accord)

Weakness:

I only have 63,000km but am already on my 3rd water pump. I wrote Chrysler Customer Service in Windsor but to date have received no response. I just spent $900 (on timing cover and water pump) 2 weeks later my A/C stopped working. I can only imagine how much this is going to cost me.

I am considering a new vehicle. I love the styling of the new Intrepids but I have serious misgivings about buying another Chrysler product. I am looking at Honda or Passat. Chrysler makes great looking vehicles. The interior design is equivalent to or superior to the Japanese vehicles. However Chrysler falls down once you open the hood. They fail miserably there and a lot of motorists know it. If they could produce an engine on par with Camry or Accord and couple it with superior Chrysler styling, there wouldn't even be a need for GM or Ford. Just wishful thinking I guess.

nothing so far..oh yeah..the trim molding in between the front doors and the back doors is flaking off, this is not a huge deal however

I have been reading these reviews and I must say...I am a little nervous, but so far I have had no problems, I have never owned a Dodge or Chrysler product before, I have owned Ford and Chevy and have not been impressed with the Chevy, Ford was ok.

Strength:

Power: 225hp 3.2 ltr engine; Autostick feature gives that extra power when you need it. Fun to drive, smooth drive; Infinity sound system outstanding; a lot of space in the trunk; Inferno Red color is beautiful specially under heavy sunlight; Aerodynamic style cuts wind perfectly at high speeds; Roomy interior is very comfortable in both front & rear.

Weakness:

Noisy tires (Goodyear Eagle GA 225/60r16), blind spots at front and rear for parking; Battery location (under air filter); Too low in the front. Transmission sensor failure causes gear to change up to second and no odometer reading. It was replaced in a couple of days by dealer. (My wife caused the failure driving over a bump at 40mph. The bump hit the chasis at the front)I'll buy another car for her :-)

I love to drive this car. It is exciting to look at it. I had to take it once to the dealer for drivers power window failure. It was replaced the same day. It is so roomy that a 6'3" person can sit in the back and cross his legs. For the size of this car the 3.2 ltr engine is better than the 2.7 of the basic model. It is a reliable car. I do not recommend the older ones. The fusion of Daimler-Benz and Chrysler (Daimler-Chrysler) was somehow a fact for me to purchase this car.

Model Reviewed: Dodge Intrepid 3.3

Strength:

- The not-so-wussy 3.3 has plenty of power off the line. It may have 161 hp, but it has enough power to keep up with the other mid-size and full-size cars, and "whoop 'em" , too.
- With that "wussy" engine, my gas mileage is excellent. I can easily get 23-25 mpg. Haha...I have a powerful engine and get excellent gas mileage. Most 3.5 owners can't say that.
- Reliability has been amazing for a car with a bad reputation. I bought this car in 1997 with 25,000 miles. It now has 99,300 miles with only 2 small repairs.
- Size is tricky. It looks small on the outside, but inside it is extremely roomy. I could not imagine driving one of those "wussy" import gas-savers. The trunk is huge and can hold a lot of groceries, luggage or whatever.
- Styling is very sporty. I have seen Intrepids come up behind me very fast. They look mean and its like "GET OUT OF MY WAY". I like that.

Weakness:

- Headlights are bad. They are a joke on bright. Dodge has obviously made the new lights better.
- Paint is very cheap, it has come off in large flakes/chunks on the rear bumper. I got tapped by a hit-and-run driver on my license plate/bumper area, too. The paint around the license plate is getting ready to come off in very large flakes.

I love this car. Its a Dark Purple 1997 4 Door Base model with the not-so-wussy 3.3 V6. Maybe "whooping" other cars with your Intrepids is why they are POS's. I wouldn't treat mine like sh*t like some of you do. Abusing your car and then whining when its having problems is so stupid. I have done regular maintenance, changed my oil with Mobil 1 Synthetic (gets pricey, but has paid off), and have never thought of taking another car off the line. Why act ignorant over a simple stop light? My car is close to the 100,000 mile mark with all original parts*, including the transmission and air conditioning parts.
*I have only had 2 problems with this car, if you call them probmems. About 5,000 miles after I bought it, the alternator went out, replaced under warranty (At first I feared this was going to be another Ford). Well, around 90,000 miles a hose burst, spilling antifreeze all over a Wendy's parking lot. I drove it to a service shop where they replaced the hose and lost antifreeze for $5. Maybe if you guys would be nice to your cars, they would be nice in return.
If anyone is looking for a good used Intrepid, try to buy one that has proof of good care. These cars seem to be crap if they aren't taken care of.

I had a 1996 Taurus for about 2 years before I bought this car. The Ford was the biggest POS. Transmission problems, electrical problems, etc. I will never buy Ford again. This wonderful Dodge is perfect where that ugly Taurus failed.
My neighbor has a 1995 Dodge Neon. She has logged 150,000 miles on that car. She takes care of her Dodge, too. By the way, her car still has its tranny, a/c parts, etc. Take care of them and they care of you.

POWER POWER POWER!!!! THIS CAR IS RROOOMMMMYYYY!!! Used ones are very affordable. I got a fully featured intrepid for only $5000.00, power seats, mirrors, locks, rear a/c, brand new factory stereo, center console, etc....

Weakness:

Hubcaps, which i think were replaced by the previous owner. they are oooogly. Also the air conditioner maliciously steals power from the engine, like it doesnt have enough, hahaha. even with the ac on, the car moves. the other day, i whoooped a 2001 maxima off the line.

So far i love this car, i have only had it for like 3 weeks but i can already tell its a great car. The only beef i have with it are the hubcaps, which can be easily replaced. My dad has an intrepid also but he has the wussy 161 hp 3.3l engine, hehehehe. I love the 214hp. the car is rediculously fast too. if it didnt have a limiter i could probably get it up to 150+! I was pushin 110mph and only tachin 3200 rpms!!!!!

Strength:

Weakness:

Cost of parts, transmission, a/c, suspension

Well, overall this car is just huge in every way. A big damn car, with impressive power and handling, which matches the repair costs. Dodge don't make anything cheap, nor will you find anything cheap to repair. However, this is bought from a relative who just beats up their cars, so most of those repairs were because of no regular maintenance stops, so I'm impressed that it could make it up to 228,000 km without the engine dying. A/C died because of bugs (don't ask) and yes, it is nosy, but I can't really complain. Good in pretty much every aspect.

Strength:

Have an Intrepid ES with the 3.2L with 225 hp/225 lb-ft., trip computer, abs/traction control, dual power seats, auto climate control, upgraded stereo w. aftermarket 6 disc changer, trip computer and the anti-theft options and the autostick. No leather or sunroof, though. The car is big (I have two kids in car seats), handles well for such a large car, is quiet on the highway and my back does not get sore (like it did in my last VW Passat GLX and Honda Civic Si). Gas mileage is much better now that it is warmer. The styling is good but they could distinguish the higher end models better. 17 instead of 16 inch rims would do a lot, as would more aggressive rubber.

I have rented the base 2.7L Intrepid and have to say that the 3.2L motor is much quieter and seemingly more refined. It also pulls the big car much more effortlessly. I would go for the bigger motor with little penalty in gas mileage.

Weakness:

I've had numerous problems with the trim that was fixed over time (now I am out of warranty, though). Just before the warranty ran out (thank God it hadn't yet), the transmission went and had to be re-built. Had the WORST experience with Perth Chrysler in Perth, Ontario Canada. Avoid that dealership like the plague. I was treated very well by Chryler's roadside assistance people after the tow truck company they hired to tow the car damaged the front end to the tune of $2000.00.
The autostick transmission is ok, but not that useful, especially since it shifts for you a couple hundred rpm before redline. The car does not have seat belt pretensioners or side-impact air bags (now an option) and the ABS is an option, not standard. The trunk opening is small but the trunk is HUGE. Try getting something from the back of the trunk that has rolled back there - you'll need some kind of hockey stick or golf club to retrieve it! There are no cup holders in back (although that changed with the 2000 edition). To get split-folding seats, you have to buy the ES version.

Except for the transmission and various trim pieces, I have had little problems with the car. It has been in the shop numerous times, but that was due to the very poor workmanship from Perth Chrylser (where the car was towed when the tranmission went - we were on a trip over X-mas and a tow company damage the car as well) and the fact my wife had a minor accident with the car not long ago. The car now has just over 60,000km on it (38,000 miles) and I hope the reliability lasts.

Who should buy this car - It is big, so if you need room, the Intrepid has it - the trunk is huge and with fold down seats, you can fit even more. It handles well, is quiet and has a lot of standard features for the price. You also don't see one in every second driveway.

Before the Intrepid, I owned a 1995 Passat (see review at this site). A great handling car with lots of creature comforts, but the Intrepid stacks up ok.
