Model Reviewed: Intrepid R/T

Strength:

Value, styling, room, comfort, engine performance, handling, features, and design. Excellent product all around. Has the engine, brakes, and performance pieces of the Chrysler 300M Handling Package. Can smoke the front tires from a dead stop merely by smashing on the gas pedal.

Weakness:

Only one problem so far - transmission was replaced at 3,000 miles. Averaging about 18-19 mpg in the city - wish it was better.
Visibility out the rear can be difficult. Reminds me of my old 69 Catalina. Once you learn it's size, easy to park and drive. Tranny shifts into 4th too soon sometimes, but the autostick feature solves that issue. Friends always want me to drive so we don't have to pack into their sardine can Honda's or Toyota's.

Got a tremendous deal on the car - $6,000 off list plus a $400 graduate school student rebate. R/T's were not selling in this market, dealer was dumping them.

I don't understand everyone else's problems with the car. The dealer and Chrysler gave me absolutely no problem with the transmission repair. I had twice experienced the tranny "neutralizing" in the first month I owned it on days when first started and it was cold outside. Only did it onece each time. They diagnosed a defective transmission case casting and installed a completely new transmission. Worked flawlessly since then. No other problems yet in 5,000 miles. Of course, my friend's parent's 98 Lexus ES300 did the same thing when it was new, but that would be written off as a fluke.

My sister has a 94 Intrepid and loves her's, though my R/T blows it away in every manner.

I am reserving the last overall rating star to see how the car holds up. I also did purchase a 7 year - 100,000 complete warranty over the Internet. We shall see if it was money well spent, but the R/T is a killer sleeper performance sedan!

Looks, power, handling, topless. very reliable car, I have 187,000 miles with no real problems. I replaced a starter, and rebuilt the tranny at 100k. Great car for the money......

Weakness:

Automatic tranny could be better, does not match the engine performance. Brake routers warped several times, not a big deal but was annoying at times.

Great car, what can I say!

Model Reviewed: Intrepid 4D Sedan

Strength:

The car rides great and has a good road feel. It starts up easily and shifts smoothly. It has a comfortable seating position with the standard bench seats.

Weakness:

Not much. Sometimes the power windows don't react to the master switch on at the driver's position, but I cleaned the contacts and now they work fine.

I have done regular maintenance and have the garaged the car since I bought it. It has low mileage (45,000) and the miles are 90% highway. The only things I have replaced are brake pads, battery, filters, and windshield wipers (better design needed). If you take care of this car, it will serve you well. I would recommend it because it has been fine for me. I'm hoping it will continue to serve me as a good commuting car and strong highway performer.

Strength:

Good comfortable cruising car in traffic

Weakness:

self-destructs after 60,000 miles

After six years of owning a Dodge Intrepid and paying for the college education of my mechanic's daughter I have had enough. It was a great car until it hit sixty thousand miles. Then everything broke. You name it - it broke. Transmission, water pump, gas gauge, air conditioner (twice) fuel injection system, front end, etc, etc, etc.

Boy was I naive. I thought the cost of car ownership was supposed to go DOWN after you paid it off.

Did I get a lemon? Maybe. But a lot of other Intrepid owners had (and have) the same problems.

Strength:

Handling, style, seat comfort (I have a lower back injury).

Weakness:

Cup holders in the way, hard to get to cig. charger when shifter in park, had Transmission replaced twice in a 6 month time period I drive a lot of highway miles (22,000 in one year)(Dodge claims this has never been an issue, not from my review of other owners), driver power seat broken the first day I owned it! Dealership not very helpful and no luck with Dodge either.

DO NOT BUY ANY DODGE PRODUCT!!!!!!!!!!!!! They are stylish and offer great financing rates, but BUYER BEWARE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Any company that can offer 60 months of 0.9% financing for 2 model years and on all models is obviously using it's only means of suckering you into purchasing their product.

Dealers are not the most helpful (even 5 star dealers). THe 5 star rating does not come from consumer rating but rather from the # of cars sold by that dealership and is awarded by DOdge!!! I tried to file several complaints regarding two dealerships and was told by Dodge headquarters that they were not interested in pursuing my complaints (ie: Dealership not willing to pay for rental car when transmission needed to be replaced again after only 2 months!!!!!!!!!!)

Strength:

Safety, Comfortable, Roomy (im 6'4), Powerful

Weakness:

Gas milage was about average, hard to tell where the nose is

The 1999 Dodge Intrepid was a great car for me to drive. I could stretch my legs out in there while I was driving. The sound was decent. My back wouldn't hurt after making an 8 hour drive up and down california. The one thing that made it fun to drive though, was the engine. The car would accelerate, but you didn't think you would be picking up speed so fast unless you checked out the spedometer. Granted the 0-60 aint nothing spectacular. But for a average user or a full size car, its great.

The main reason for me wanting to post this was the fact I was in an accident the other day where I was in the Dodge Intrepid. The other car was going about 50, and I was going about 20. He hit me head on and threw the car accross the intersection. My passanger and I only had a couple bruises. The only problem was no one told us when airbags explode, it looks like the cabin is full of smoke and it smells like something is burning. My passanger and I took off running. Anyways, the car handled head on collisions fine. I would recommend this car to anyone on safety alone.

Strength:

Stylish, roomy, comfortable to drive even for a short (5'2")person used to driving smaller cars

Weakness:

I can't keep up (financially) with the repairs that are needed. Coolant leaks , water pump replaced... My husband insists we buy Japanese next time, paint also wears off quickly on the radio tuner buttons.

I wish I had read these review summaries before I purchased the Dodge. I might as well burn my $$$! We've had 2 Oldsmobiles and have had much less trouble with them (both put together) than with the Dodge Intrepid. I'm very, very disappointed.

Strength:

Nice accessories, love the power seats, touch climate control is luxury, 3.5 liter power under the hood is nice, trip computer useful.

Weakness:

Transmission trouble, water pump replaced, check engine light comes on with no explanation from any repairman, continuous radiator leaks, getting ready to replace water pump for the second time as well as repair a radiator leak caused by the installation of the first pump. Power window motor needs to be replaced. Numerous steering linkage problems. Rotors have been replaced twice and have been shaved too many times to count. Tires for front-end are bought approximately every six months because the alignment is out and no one can fix it.

I would not recommend buying an Intrepid for a long-term ownership vehicle. They are very nice for short-term leases or rentals but for ownership...I will never have another one. The engine and its parts are of high quality but the drive train, steering linkage, and accessories are for the dogs. Spend your time on General Motors because Chrysler has certainly left a negative impression on me.

Model Reviewed: Intrepid

Strength:

Reliability, comfort, large trunk, power, spaciousness, handling.

Weakness:

Too insignificant to mention.

Living along lake Erie I have become accustomed to driving in snow and the intrepids wide wheel base makes driving in snowy conditions an absolute breeze. I can't imagine an SUV being worth $10,000 more for the 4x4 option a better buy. I don't even have the Traction Control option. The 3.3L V6 provides more than enough power, I believe 161 HP, its still the best looking car on the road, I know 2 other people who own the old style Intrepid and none of us have had those infamous Transmission problems. I just turned 94,000 miles and the only replaced item on the car was a ball joint in the front passenger side wheel which was causing a "knock" sound on left turns. Did not affect the performance of the car. Overall, very reliable when treated nicely. I can't say enough good things about this car.

Similar Products Used:

1987 Ford Taurus, the taurus felt heavier during driving which is probably why it didnt have much power. 176,000 miles and still going.
1993 Honda Accord, Say what you want about Honda reliability. At 19,000 miles the distributor went out, the customer service sucked, the tranny jerks violently when shifting out of park and overall, the intrepid has been a far better car.
1999 Chevy Malibu, my sister spends $600 a month on that pos car and its always for stuff that shouldn't happen on a new car. ie. dash light burned out.

Strength:

Beautiful styling, Strong engine, very roomy

Weakness:

NONE

I have read the reviews and think that the people who write them are the ones you see passing everything thats on the road and run their car into the ground before they have anything fixed. I know 8 people who own the same model as me. We all say the same thing, that the intrepid is a strong, reliable, and fast car! I would recommend the Intrpid to anyone who wants a strong car. Mine is driven at least 40-75 miles a day and I have not had a problem yet. My grandmother owned the car before me. And my father and I did all the routine stuff to the car. We have never had a problem with it and it has 102,000 miles on it. My only fault with the car is the lack of aftermarcket performance parts with it and the fact that the govenor cuts off at 110 miles per hour. I will always by chrslyer and intend to stay that way for the rest of my life!
