Strength:

It looks good in the driveway

Weakness:

If you actually drive it, expect it to break down

I have had over thirthy work orders for this car in 20 months. So far I've replaced: Transmission, Transmission module, Heater module, Body control module, power window assembly in two doors (including glass in the drivers door damaged by aforementioned failure), stereo, all speakers at least once each (one three times), warped rotors (from factory) causing damage to rest of brake assembly, all four rims and tires due to out of round rims (Chrysler needed an engineering team a 27 days in the shop to figure this one out), and it's in the shop again as I have no heat AGAIN! and it needs CV joints and boots. Don't buy this car unless you have money to burn. I HAVE contacted the media as Chrysler's last financial offer was insufficient. In fact it was only 10% of the costs I have incurred thus far.

Strength:

Body styling
Size
Road handling
170,000km and still on the road

Weakness:

Wind noise at highway speed
Transmission
Brakes
Air conditioning
Cup holder
Water pump
Power steering pump
Transmission cooler lines leak
Tie rod ends
Battery
Recent exhaust fumes in passenger compartment
All of these things failed prematurely or more than once.

If not for a personal friend who is a Chrysler mechanic in a dealership I would have given up long ago. This car is like Cher - good looking older model but requires many trips to the salon to stay that way. I will not buy another Chrysler product nor will I try to sway your decision with my opinion. Just fact. I have had an inordinate number of hours sitting in dealership service waiting rooms due to this car. If you have a lot of spare time and extra cash in the budget but want a good looking spacious sedan - this could be the one.

Weakness:

I have had many problems with this car. The list follows. My biggest gripe is with the lack of customer support I have received with more than a few dealerships. Chrysler corporate blames dealerships but offers no help. This will make die hard Americans angry but I have had 10x better service from German built automobiles. Actually that makes me mad to!

Problems:
Major:
Engine Consumes 1.5 + quarts of oil per 3K miles. (Within Manufactures specifications)
Remedy: NONE
Minor:
Multiple steering pumps
Engine misfiring
Window stripping assembly by monkeys
Front speaker failed
Remedy: many trips to dealership - No Loaner policy!

Don’t buy this product if you expect the manufacture to stand behind its product. It is quite disappointing when you invest 20K and are treated as if you don’t matter. Will never purchase any domestic Chrysler product again. I hope the new German CEO addresses the customer support issues.

Strength:

Super looks, Handling, Amazing power for such a small displacement v-6

Weakness:

road & tire noise

I know to stay away from 97 and earlier Intrepids, but this 99 model I bought used, has been a good car. It started life as a rental and I bought it at 21'000 miles...have 31,000 on it now. The car isn't perfect, but I don't expect it to be. It has the standard 2.7 v-6 which developes more power per cubic inch than anything in production right now....the engine is a work of art. I've read some reviews that mentioned that their intrepid is underpowered....either those people like to abuse automobiles, or my Intrepid has an unusually tight and stong engine, because mine can get completely silly if I really need to make it perform. I'm having trouble believing it's putting out only 200hp at the most, and I have not put the tachometer anywhere near the rpm needed to produce that much power. Anyway...It zips up to 50mph so quick I cannot say its underpowered...all in all, it's a good looking, fun car to drive, if you dont mind a little more road noise than you would expect from a large car.

Junk Pile

This car is a piece of crap. Dodge must put these cars together with second rate cheap parts. Then when they break, they charge you a ton to replace them. For example, one of the two radiator fan motors started making a loud racket and went out in a blaze of black smoke. No big deal I thought until I called Dodge. Turns out I have to buy both motors complete with wiring and shroud as one piece assembly. Again, no big deal until I got the price. Nearly $600!! For a freaking pair of $25 electric motors!! Other things about my car....weatherstripping falling off, swaybar links went out ($110 not including labor), brake rotors needed turning way too early, steering wheel shakes at 65mph. What is bad is that this car has always been babied, adult owned, and garage kept and still is a piece of junk. I would not recommend an Intrepid to anyone.

Dodge, you are a rip off company and you SUCK!!!!! I'm going back to GM.

Strength:

Fast, responsive, fuel eco, spacious - Absolutely fun to drive.

Weakness:

Weak stereo (stock), door molding is starting to get loose (im really nit-picking here... seriously)

I would totally recommend this car to anyone in the market for a new family/sporty sedan. Its a blast to drive, its a fast and agile car - and still has lots of room for the family and friends. I have to say this - a car is only as good as how the owner treats it: I read alot of reviews about people complaining about this car falling apart. If they or the previous owner are driving it too hard almost ALL the time of course its going to suffer some problems, and this happens with EVERY car.

Weather-stripping

I will admit that Dodge has its problems with customer service and and some reliability issues but my Intrepid is over 7 years old with almost 113,000 miles on it and this thing has been unbelievably reliable. I'm not saying that there aren't lemons out there but there does seem to be more than most. I completley believe that you can buy a used Intrepid and not have to worry about it breaking down. Just be sure you do some homework on it. If at all possible, get any and all service records for the car and spend the 15 dollars on the title report at carfax.com. Now that I've passed 100,000 miles I change the oil about every 2500 miles and use fram double guard filters. Other than regular oil changes and coolant flushes the only extra costs I've put into it are as follows:
Checked the timing chain at 90,000 miles
Replaced water pump at 100,000(preventative maintenance)
Check the A/C every spring
Oh yeah, this car lives off of 89 octane gasoline.
New tires about every 55,000 miles
I've only recently had my first tranny problem. On one morning when it was about 15 degrees, the car wouldn't go in reverse. But maybe 1 minute later after it had warmed up, it was fine. What can I say, its almost 7 1/2 years old.

just had my first problem, it's the air conditioning , although I think that it just needs charged.

I would recomend this car highly, it has been great for me. I have had it for a year and have put over 20,000 miles on it myself, without problem.
My transmission is still strong at 86,000 total miles.
I believe that with routine maintainance this is an excellant car

Strength:

this is one great car. I have the new RT version and it is very nicely finished. It is fast, gets great mileage. I have aced out mustangs and other sports car in my family sedan! the engine sounds nice for its size and it really does look nice. It has lots of room, looks like a limo but feels like a sports car. BIG TRUNK!

Weakness:

When the AC is on the mileage goes way down. Brake disks wear fast and pads too. Maybe i abuse it but it has only minor weaknesses.

I would recoomend this car to anyone. A lot of people say their intrepids suck and a lot of people cant say enough good things..... i guess you have to hope u dont get a lemon or buy the R/T
