Model Reviewed: Ford F-150 Extended Cab

Strength:

Styling is top notch. The polished aluminum five spoke 16" wheels look terrific, as does the black honeycomb grill. Unlike new GM trucks which are low to the ground, the Ford sits nice and high. Interior ergonomics are fantastic and the ride is very smooth and quiet. My wife likes driving it as much as I do because it drives like a car but feels solid like a truck (she likes sitting nice and high, too). The cup holders in the center console are perfect for any size drink. Four doors standard on extended cab is hard to beat. Folding seats in the back work great and create lots of space. Have carried grown adults in back and nobody complains about the room.

Weakness:

Fuel economy on the 4.2L V-6 is not as good as I would have liked (16.5 in town and 18.5 Hwy). Am considering a K&N air filter to help out, but it is a full size truck after all.

Obviously, I really like this pickup. Driving onto the Chevy lot while shopping left me very disappointed. Even the 4x4's barely sit as tall as my 4x2 F-150. Why do they build their trucks like that? As for the Dodge, they are known to have some electrical quirks and Dodge sure is proud of those trucks when you look at the price tag. Anyway, the interior ergonomics of the Ford are outstanding and build quality is first rate. The truck does not rattle and wind noise does not exist. I opted for the captain's chairs and they are very comfortable even on six hour trips (I've done two). The power of the V-6 is not bad. It won't push you back in your seat off the line, but on the highway it is easy to be going 80mph and not even notice. Climbing hills at 4000' elevation over mountain passes was a concern of mine, however having climbed two such passes I simply deselected Overdrive and screamed up the mountain only turning 3000 rpm at 75-80mph.
I paid 700 over invoice and felt very satisfied with the deal. Like I said, there is a reason the F-150 is the best selling truck in america and that is because when you look at similarly configured trucks, no company can match Ford in the price department and you end up with a great driving, great looking truck that still makes me grin whenever I get into to it.

GM 1500 series - Too low to the ground and the new styling is not my taste
Dodge 1500 seriers - Only come with the big motor and styling is getting tired. My father-in-law ate $8000 to get rid of his because of significant problems.
By the way, both trucks dollar for dollar don't match the Ford when similarly configured.

Dodge has always had great styling. I paid $25k for it New. For someone looking for a reliable car, I would not recommend the Intrepid. I had not owned a Dodge product in 20 years and I will probably never own another one, and could not recommend this car to anyone.

Strength:

-Great Looks
-Dependable Engine
-Handles like a much smaller car
-Extremely roomy

Weakness:

-Air conditioning
-Lacks power

Was purchased in 97 for $9000 with only 53,000 miles. Given to from dad in 97, when he recieved new vehicle.

Love the car. Has lots and lots and lots of room. Have many aftermarket stereo components and still have more than enough room. Has great looks and a pleasure to drive. Seats are extremely comfortable and supportive especially on long trips. Great visibility. Tremendous handling. Engine keeps on chugging and has no problem with higher revs. Four wheel disc brakes a must. (Drove Intrepids with both all wheel disc and disc front, drum rear).

Definitely get one with a 3.5L engine and NOT the 3.3L like I have. It runs fine but 160HP is just not enough for a 3400lb car. The 3.5L has over 210. Heard that transmissions are a problem but mine still works fine after 105,000 miles-does shift a little rough. The air conditioner NEVER works. Get it fixed each spring, and each fall keeps breaking. Will no longer fix, just put windows down. Water pump and alternator will go out within 75,000 miles based on my experience and other family members that own Intrepids. Car definitely should be stored in a garage. Door seals leak and rust on the door trim due to extreme cold and salt. (Minnesota climate).

Have had lots of repairs between 55,000 and 85,000 miles. No problems since. Even with all its problems it still is a great car and would recommend anyone getting one for $5000 used. Don't pay more than that, because you'll end up sinking alot into repair bills.

Looked Nice, sporty look
Good power w/3.5L V6
Lots of trunk room
Very roomy on the inside
Smooth and comfortable ride
The infinity system was not bad for it being factory

Weakness:

Had to get the a/c fixed
transmmission seems to be slipping

I paid $3,000 for the car w/95,000k on it. It seems like a nice car but my mind will change if the transmission fails (at least a $2300 job). But overall the car is very nice. Be sure to try and get service records from previous owners if you can. If you have a family and need the room for long trips the intrepid is for you. If you just have enough money to purchase the car but not a lot for repairs I suggest you go elsewhere.

SO many problems to list. The evaporative cooler went out right in the middle of 115 degree summers in Arizona. Luckily the mechanic that fixed our car was honest. He found out the this part was recalled by the dealer was fixed for free. But not before about 5 trips to fix the A/C. The tie rods were just replaced in June of 2000. That was not cheap abot $600.00
Now today 9-9-00 we find out that our rack and pinion needs replacing. I guess intrepid owners must be independently wealthy. This is going to cost over $1000.00 dollars. I dont think so. I guess I can wait for all the other problems listed in these reviews to happen to my car because it seems to happen to every other intrepid.

Will never buy a Dodge product again. To many major repairs. Paid 18000 back in 1997 and it is bearly worth 9000 today.

Strength:

This car has great styling, plenty of room, can seat 4 adults very well, and handles very well for a larger car. The engine is great on the open highway and does ok in the city, if you are looking for pavement ripping acceleration, look elsewhere.

Weakness:

I DO keep up with maintainance on my vehicle and right now I am looking at replacing the water pump for the second time in 13 months. That a car would need 3 water pumps is outrageous. What kind of maintainance a water pumps needs is beyond me. This is a well documented problem with the 3.5 liter engine and Dodge Intrepids. I saved my self $500 dollars by doing it myself, but replacing the water pump is a major hassle and very time consuming as you have to take off the front engine cover and both belts, replace the timing belt and then re-adjust the timing. The front end has started to make some rattling noises. The car now has 72000 miles on it. I have not as yet had any problems with the A/C or transmission, but I did have the tranny flushed recently. Make DARN sure to use the proper transmission fluid. I liked the roomer size, loved the styling, but I wouldn't recommend this car to anyone looking for reliability in a vehicle. I WILL be buying a Toyota next time around, The US Auto industry has let me down for the last time.

I would not recommend this car to anyone looking for a reliable car. If you want a roomy car with great styling that you drive infrequently, and have the ready cash for repairs, why buy this? Read the reviews, water pumps, AC problems, transmission problems for all Dodge Intrepids from 1993 to 1997. If you are looking for a used car, go with the Hondas and Toyotas. These kind of repairs are far too expensive too dismiss or gamble on.

Model Reviewed: intrepid es 3.3 v6 8 miles

Strength:

Very roomy, quiet comfortable ride, great handling (thanks to large tires),reasonnable fuel/mileage ratio, adorable 3.3 V-6 engine with VERY flat torque curve, great styling and looks.

Weakness:

Now for the ugly stuff: replaced 2 tie rods, 1 water pump, 1 power window motor, all four brakes discs, 1 control module for radiator fan(fans would not start when motor getting too hot), 2 suspension control arms (car would rattle on very small bumps), 2 hood gas struts (ever received a hood on your head as you check the oil?), and now it has develloped a problem with the transmission (car shaking at around 35 mph, intermittent) will have the tranny re-programmed at dealer, we shall see...

For someone looking for a reliable used car, I would not recommend the Intrepid from 93 to 97. For someone willing to pay for occasionnal repairs and being somewhat of a home-mechanic (tune-ups and stuff) you will love the longetudinal mount of the engine (front-to-back) and the room under the hood (3.3 V6 only). For the newer models 98 to 2000 I can't say, they seem more reliable, BUT... Before I bought this car, I had never owned a Chrysler product, and will most probably not own one again (too many trips to the repair shop). Too bad, because I must say that Dodge (Chrysler here in Canada) cars look absolutely GREAT. But looks aren't everything...

Strength:

Beautiful looking design. Roomy interior, smooth ride & handling. Lots of power with AUTOSTICK. Great "convenience" features...keyless entry, integrated rear seat cupholders in armrest, 60/40 split fold down rear seat, 12 volt power outlet, baterry saver feature. Fabulous sound system with great speaker locations.

Weakness:

Minor complaint is that it is hard to judge the front and rear when parking, although over time I will probably get used to it. Didn't like the fact that ABS brakes were considered an option, even on the ES model, and I had to purchase them at an additional cost.

The new Intrepid seems to be a far cry from the original LH series. Everything I have read and heard seems to indicate Chrysler has dealt with the growing pains of the original model. I purchased this vehicle for just under $24,000.00 (Canadian dollars), and it seems to provide a lot more value for the money than either a Taurus or a Malibu. The styling and standard equipment seems to be a better value than the competition.

I certainly hope that reliability has been improved over my previous experiences with the Concorde. If it has, then Chrysler has a winner on they're hands with this impressive sporty package that looks-wise, blows away the competition.

Similar Products Used:

1993 Chrysler Concorde. I purchased this car used in 96 (steal of a price, or at least so I thought). The Concorde was a beautiful looking and driving car (when it wasn't in the shop). Problems were many, but the hil-lites included numerous AC problems. (new evaporator, temp modulation switch, replaced various lines, and then was told I either needed a new dryer unit or a new compressor, although just re-charging the unit each spring kept it going these last two years). Replaced the timing belt and water pump twice within 24 months. Throttle body leaked fuel. Drivers seat bracket completely snapped off track and had to be welded back in place. Replaced manifold gasket, glove box lock, all four struts in 96, and 2 catalytic converters. When I traded it in, the transmission had an alarming thunk when you put it in reverse!

I had 3 Honda products prior to the Concorde and basically they were great except for the constant replacing of front brakes and calipers (87 Accord)

Strength:

Good driving position and ample rear seat room

Weakness:

Annoyingly underpowered, wind noise excessive

Rented this car for a week in the Colorado Rockies--it had less than 6000 miles on the odometer. Car is extremely underpowered for its size and price. Acceleration was inadequate even on flat roads, and totally unacceptable on inclines. Wind noise was also excessive.

I would not consider buying this car.
