Strength:

Affordability, power, comfort, safety, great blind-spot visibility. Good gas mileage for a big, powerful car. Averaging 20 MPG on I-80 in "rush hour" trafic. Got 28 on a tank going to Kansas City last winter!

Weakness:

left tie rod end no good at 48,000 miles, I'm waiting for the manifold to rupture.

I purchased this '97 Crown Vic last October from a dealer in Blair, NE. It was a one-owner with 44,000 miles. The dealer gave me the phone # of the previous owner, so I contacted him to verify the condition of the vehicle, etc. He was an older gentleman who traded it in for a new Crown Vic. He said he hadn't had any problems with it. I did not purchase any waranties from the dealer and am taking my chances nothing major will go wrong! I like the car because of its' power and ride. I think it's a great road-trip car (I can get my family of four and all of our luggage in it and still have room left over. I'm looking forward to taking it on a long-haul mountain trip this summer. After reading the reviews here on the '97 crown vics, I'm starting to worry about the intake manifold failing. I hate getting stranded on I-80 in western Nebraska (there's not alot out there). I will keep my fingers crossed! This is a good car for families and guys who can't bring themselves to drive a mini-van. I'm pretty sure that even with its' powerful V8 it still gets better mileage than most SUVs on the road and was a heck of a lot more affordable! It's a great low mileage used vehicle for the price. I have had one problem so far, the left front tie-rod end started squeaking so loudly that the noise made it an embarrasement to drive. Why can't they make a front end with grease zerks on it anymore? The auto-supply clerk suggested I inject grease into the joint with a needle that connects to the grease gun, but I decided to have it replaced at a Lincoln/Mercury dealer in Omaha for $180.00 including alligning the front end. Now the car pulls to the right, wereas before it went straight down the road. I took it back in with the pulling complaint, and they told me it was either the wind conditions, road conditions, or the tires (which are brand new GoodYears). They switched the position of the front tires to try to correct the "radial pull", but it didn't help, I think they just did a poor job on the alignment and for some reason don't want to correct it (I know there are alot of variables in getting a car to go strait down the road, but I know when a car is pulling to the right). On a positive note, they did install car seat teathers in it for free;)

Strength:

Strong acceleration. Very capable handling on dry roads. Good highway milage (25mpg). Quiet at speed. Startles the heck out of other drivers as you come flying down the access ramp.

Weakness:

Poor traction in snow and ice. Rough roads can upset handling and force you to slow. Can't squeeze into tight parking spaces.

Only 6500 miles so far with no problems to report. Has the dual exhaust and performance suspension. Very good acceleration. Handling is very good on smooth roads but gets pretty rough on potholed city streets. Excellent car for the interstate very stable at speed and in crosswinds. Very bad in snow. You learn to keep rock salt in the trunk to get out of deeper snow. Stock tires are part of the problem, will try something more for snow and wet conditions this next winter. And, no.. I'm not worried about rear end collisions with explosive fires, - I don't do traffic stops. A great car, just stay home in snowstorms.

Strength:

Good ride. Rear wheel drive.

Weakness:

Quality. Power seats/Power windows/Automatic door locks quit working shortly after warranty expired as well as "check engine light keeps illuminating for no reason.

I am an owner of a 1997 Ford Crown Victoria (VIN 2FALP74W1VX191832) purchased new at Padre Ford Mazda (now Champion Ford Mazda) in Corpus Christi, TX that had an intake manifold failure on May 4, 2003 resulting in the loss of engine coolant and the engine overheating. The situation was realized before any serious engine damage occurred. The mileage of the vehicle at the time of failure was 51,691. The resulting repair bill was approximately $650 ($383.33 for the manifold and cross-over and $220 for the labor plus towing and thermostat). I have the failed manifold in my custody. I contacted the dealership at which I purchased the vehicle with no relief as well as contacted the area Ford service representative through the dealership and was denied assistance due to the fact that I did not have the repairs performed at a Ford dealership. It is quite obvious that Ford knowingly has a defective design due to the redesign of the manifold into a 2 component replacement with the coolant cross-over being made of metal instead of plastic as was originally installed in this vehicle.

When you have to pass somebody, hit the gas, and you are gone, just fantastic.

Weakness:

Only problme I have, is I smoke, and when you crack the window ( drivers side) and it is ranining out, water comes in and drips down on the window controlls, and my arm, Ford should figure this one out, and fix it. I have drove many Crown Vics, and this is the first year this happened. what ever happened to the old vent window? Hay ford, wake up!

Love the car, have all the fun stuff in it, every thing in the steering wheel, radio, cd, tape, volume, heat air, fan, just great.

Heavy car, lots of steel. Safer in an accident Room for 6 people or 4 people and a large dog Perfect for the kids carpool Lots of truck space Our car had very few repairs even at 188,000 miles Got about 23 miles to the gallon Lots of character Lots of power

Weakness:

Not as good fuel economy as a small car

We bought the 1987 Crown Victoria from a coworker in February 2002. I had always driven smaller cars before (Toyota Tercel, Toyota Corolla) but had two whiplash injuries and needed a car with a power seat. The joke in the family was that we had bought the power seat and got a car with it. Well, we named the car Beula. She was big and people stopped to look at her. She had 167,000 miles when we got her. Well, we are now hooked on the Crown Vic. We were in a serious collusion (partial head on, side swip) when someone crossed the yellow line on a rural road at night. The Crown Vic saved my husband and my neice from serious injuries. The car is totaled but we are buying a 1994 Crown Vic today

Strong Engine, lots of space, very reliable, large cargo space in trunk, parts are easy to find, easily repaired or worked on.

Weakness:

Has a minor lifter knock but thats typical for fords. Exhaust is missing so gas mileage sucks right now.

I bought this car from a former class mate for 40 bucks. Had to replace 3 things: power steering pump, raditor, and shot out window. The car runs great and has a lot of horse power although it doesn't shift into overdrive. Engine seems to use NO oil in the time I have driven it.

Powerful, smooth, luxurious, and above all a great value! Very affordable and durable. You can't beat this car for the value. These cars a built like tanks and never really wear out.

Weakness:

ABS brakes sometimes vibrate at odd times. Never a brake failure just a minor nusiance. Airbag light sometimes flashes on. Not the best car in heavy snow - just keep a light foot on the gas.

Black LX model. I love the power of a RWD V8. Lots of room and handles well for such a large car. Very smooth quiet ride. I had a Chevy Blazer before this car and the Crown Victoria is a much better vehicle. More quiet and corners better than an SUV. Better MPS also!

Strength:

Steel! Very reliable.

Weakness:

Battery terminals seem to corrode often. Not geared for 75MPH on highways; not areodynamic. Some minor parts are hard to get. Vinyl top doesn't last. Paint flakes off after 18 years. :) Front factory speakers are almost impossible to access. A/C system potentially expensive.

All in all, this vehicle has performed marvelously. I bought it used (and with sludge in the oil) in May of 1997, and it is still running very well in April of 2003! Fuel economy is about 13 MPG in the city no matter how I drive (though I never floor it) and about 18-20 on the highway. Considering that it runs noticably different on 87 octane over 91, this ends up being my biggest problem with the vehicle. I love the steel bumpers. I love steel. Unfortunately, it's heavy, and the car, as I drive it, weighs about two tons. Thus, even with the 5L 302 V8, don't expect to outrun everything on the road. On that note, hills, wind, high speed, and this car don't mix well. The car can maintain 55 or so through just about any combination of those, but I believe it is simply not geared for today's highway speeds. Bummer. The car has left me stranded once: shortly after I purchased it, the "spark generator" (?), the thing that sends the electricity to the distributor cap, went out; the mechanic fixed it in the parking lot the next morning for a hundred bucks. It also did not turn over once last year; this was not a power issue... best explanation I can come up with is that the computer thought I was in Drive, as there was a "click" when I turned the key, and there was power (lights worked, etc.), but it would not spin the starter. I believe I'd fiddled with the gear shift and then it started. No similar problems since. There seems to have been a pinhole leak in the head gasket; 5k miles with a constant trace of water in the oil. A trip to Autozone and a bottle of their best stop-leak seems to have stopped that problem in its tracks. Oil use seems to fluctuate. It's limited to less than a 1/2 a quart every 2,000 miles (oil change); lately, it's been far less. I strongly recommend the use of Duralube's SR3 oil additive. Stay away from Slick 50! Since buying the car, I've had to replace: power steering pump front steering bars (?, $500 or so) universal joint fuel injector assembly (due to wear) rear brake drums stereo/cassette player Currently, the compressor is making an electric "squeak" noise, most likely due to work fan brushes inside its motor. Problem: it'll cost over $700 to fix. If I could buy another used CV for $10K or so, I'd let this guy finally have some rest.

I have owned my 1998 Crown Victoria for a little over a year now, and I have never driven a better car. It accelerates beutifly this car can beat just about anything off the line, and it has a lot of room, a great stereo system, and a nice big trunk(great for vacations) it has a great price compared to jaguars, mercadies, and volvo and its one of the only full size 6 passenger luxury cars left on the market. I hope Ford continues to make it for a long time because from now on its the only car i'll buy.

Poor fuel economy, I believe a 351 is more suitable for this size car. Trying to prove a 4.6L can move anything is a mistake.

This is my first Ford.(Chevy has nothing I want or can afford). I've owned it since Oct '02. I'm very impressed at the acceleration and handling of such a big car. It turns heads all the time. Even the police will take a second glance. With an easy foot the gas will last a while. Aggressive driving will have you at the fuel pump every two days(Guaranteed!). The Auto A/C control is excellent plus the power leather seats and the CD Changer/Tape stereo will make you forget the Bad traffic outside. The shifting is smoothe thru the 4spd. With the O/D off, sometime a 2-3 stutter will kick-in on quick acceleration. One of my best cars I've ever owned. Compared to the Marauder, the money you save will make it twice as fast.
