Strength:

Cost, handling, pickup, gas mileage are excellent. I am 250 lbs and 6 feet tall and enjoy a very comfortable ride.

Weakness:

The high beam light switch sometimes doesn't shift from high to low without me manually helping it along. No big deal once I discovered that it just takes a minor amount of downward pressure on the "stalk" to overcome the problem. There seems to be a lot of black dust accumulating on the front wheels.

I was sceptical until I took a test drive on my ZX3 and a ZX5. I loved the drive and handling of both of them, but the extra large front doors sold me on the ZX3 over the ZX5. Excellent pickup, reasonable gas mileage and an attractive body/style. A very nice car for my long commute, which racks up about 25,000 miles a year. I haven't experienced any of the problems expressed elsewhere on this website, but...to be safe, I purchased the 100,000 mile/5 year ESP package.

supported by a company rich in customer service retoric and short on real customer service....no corporate responsiveness

Averages 7 trips a year to the dealership, recalls 2 times the rest engine valves and other problems related to low bid subcontracting. Terrible terrible product........ 2000 escort not much better ... What happen they were doing so well in early 90's....But now Yewwwwwwww.

2001 - Purchased 12/15/2000, 1st time in shop 01/04/01. Within 16 months have had breaks replaced six times. Car stalls, have towed three times. All tires had to be replaced during this time. This is just some of the beiggest problems. This car is a death trap.

Ford Focus Review
Model Reviewed: SE Comfort Sedan w/Zetec Eng

Strength:

The Zetec deliverS enough power for city driving. The seating is very good and its comfortable and the radio is excellent. Interior room is great and it steers and handles like a dream. My wife loves it! The trunk is roomy and the aluminum wheels are attractive. I wish the fuel economy was better. The safety of occupants seems good. Engineering is outstanding! Bravo to Ford. It's a great car! Needs more variety in color choices. The 104" wheel base makes for a smoother ride. Lastly, I deserve to drive a good car and my Focus hopefully will be what I deserve.

Weakness:

Engine stalled twice while it idled at stops, but started right away. Other cars have done the same. I hope the 135 pound torque will be increased. There are 4800 miles on the odometer so far and counting!

The 2002 SE Comfort Sedan with the Zetect Engine is the 16th car I've bought in my life time and I think it is the best! The value of the Focus is superior to a Volkswagon TDI Diesel and that says it all. I've got my figures crossed that the Focus will be as good as the people who built it in Wayne, but I don't trust the cruise control on hills because of the automatic shifting of gears on grades. I don't know about suspension or other problems in the nine recalls of the vehicle, but somehow I think this car is okay because it was randomly test driven at the factory for 23 miles before in was delivered to the dealer just 15 miles from where it was built. I put a lot of faith in that. If this car is as good as it is today three or four years from now my next car will be a Focus that will have side impact bags, ABS, and the trim of a ZTS. I expect to drive this one at least a 100,000 miles too!

Strength:

Handling, awesome sounding stereo, a/c is great, lot's of room in front, comfortable.

Weakness:

Lot's of dust on front hubcaps, Selat blet button came off (no biggie)just a pain to grab for the clasp till it was fixed, CD player messes up shuffling CD's on top of each other, rear passenger door lock messed up, waiting for part, lock was said to be stripped. Gas gauge does not register that tak is full after I fill up, takes a few hours for some reason. Rear seat clasps don't seem to grasp unless you SLAM them to close. This car does not have the wonderful, clear vision that the '94 Ford Escort wagon has. You can see ALL around you in that car. The Focus has quite a few blind spots, but I may be spoiled from the Escort..One last thing, No matter where I position my steering whell at, my left arm always seems to get tired (maybe my arm isn't as long as those that designed the car) Would rather have had an Escort but the 2002 was like a piece of junk compared to the Focus. I HOPE my car doesn't pan out to be a lemon like those I have read about.

I liked the way the car looked and felt when I test drove it a few times. Lots of front room and everything was within reach. I own a 1994 Ford Escort Wagon and I recommend this baby to everyone. Nothing compares to it. I have had no problems and needed nothing done to it other than normal maintenance! Now the Focus is a different story. I am hoping it is just "bugs" that need worked out because it is a new car.

Strength:

All around good car, good on mileage, kids have not destroyed it, easy to clean.

Weakness:

finish work like the trim, and the paint. It seems to be peeling near the doors.

I dont know why all of you are so upset. This is a new car and a new make of body style , they will all have problems with them. Like all things that are changed the ford motor company isn't the only company with recalls. I also had my fair share of recalls, But so far I have not had my engine stall on me or it start on fire I have 140000km 87000mi on my ford focus wagon and yes it was hard on tires and breaks but I found out that if I SLOWED DOWN they all lasted longer I changed my tires at 57000km 35000mi and breaks at about the same time. Yes I know when you let the engine roar all out, all it wants to do is go. I know it will do 150km/hr ; but slow down it will last longer and if you all stop complaining it will be worth something for resale value.

room, styling, power (with A/C off), stereo, handling, comfy seats, dealer support (Oakridge in London, and Campbells in Exeter), MPG, ride, quietness on highway

Weakness:

crappy Goodyear original equipment tires (noisy, rough riding, short tread life), and front brakes like everyone else.

Too bad for all the folks with so many problems on first year models. It seems the U.S. customers have more problems with dealers than we Canadians. This is a very enjoyable car, not without its faults, but overall very good.

Faulty front suspension causing death of a friend

A very good friend of mine bought a Focus recently. Today, my friend is no longer with us because of a defect in the front suspension of these cars. I do NOT recomend buying one of these cars at all.

Fun to drive, Economical, looks good

Weakness:

turn on the A/C, turn off the power.

So far so good. I have had the center cap fall off of one of the wheels, no big deal. I keep reading about all of the recalls on the prior models, but I am doing ok so far. It is a peppy little car as long as you keep it up in the revs. I have owned vw's and miata's and I still thing this is a fun car to drive. And that's saying something. Mine came with the 16" wheels, and the ride suffers because of it, but it handles better than the 15" wheel models
