Strength:

*Superb handling
*Excellent braking
*Smooth engine
*"cozy" interior
*Extremely rev-happy
*Engine holds up through high stress very well
*Inexpensive to purchase

Weakness:

*Expensive replacement parts
*Lacking in raw power
*Almost non-existant aftermarket items
*Plastic interior panels feel cheezy

I paid about $7,500.00 for my first one (93) with
about 90,000 miles on it and it fell apart by
140k but I love it to death. Held up better than
any other sports car I've driven with 140,000
miles on it. Bought my second one this year (97)
to use as a project car. It had just under 1,000
miles on it. Thats pretty damn rare if you ask me.
It takes a while to find good mods but they ARE
there. You will not find a car with better looks
and performance for the same price.

Looks, handling, fun

Weakness:

Interior, rear calipers

Driven my '93 since new. I've had no problems except for crappy rear brake calipers that kept freezing up. Ford finally got a set that didn't. I like the car, overall it is a blast to drive. I recommend a Borla exhaust system when the stock one dies -- give you significantly more power and only cost about $50 more than a replacement Midas exhaust system. Dependable and a surprisingly affordable daily driver/commuter.

Solid V6, Handling, Breaking, Easily compatible with lots of Stereo toys hehehehe.

Weakness:

Makes some weird interior noises. Interior panels very weak.

My 93 GT is the best car i have driven. It is the only car I feel safe driving at Top speed in. Cops hate it, and they can't catch me either. My engine is stock but soon will have a supercharger in it. The next review will be my autopsy. Sticks to the road like a fly on fly paper. Very safe if you know how to drive at top speeds. Breaking is excellent. Gas Mileage is very good for a V6. Very sleek and aerodynamic. The interior does not like the pounding bass of my stereo, very noisy. Need to make mods.
4 10's in the hatch.

Strength:

- smooth V6
- good manual transmission
- very good handling
- good ergonomics (except for stock radio)
- still very nice style
- big trunk for class

Weakness:

- could use more power
- brakes are a little spongy
- little, nagging reliability problems
- fit-n-finish could have been better

Very good handling allows one to drive this car hard around corners with confidence. Although this car is seven years old, it still looks better than many newer cars in its class. Surprising utility with a big trunk (for its class) and split, fold-down, rear seats. A few, minor reliability problems, like the fuel switch shutting off once, detracts from the overall enjoyment of owning a 1993 Ford Probe GT.

At least 20 more horsepower could have lifted this to 4 star overall status, but to me, 3 stars is still pretty good.

HANDLES

Weakness:

wheels finish cracks
small rattles
every little part is very expensive

Great overall car!!! Very smooth and fast. Could use 20 extra horsepower, tail lights are ten bucks, foglights fill with water causing the buld to break repeatidly. Whells finish crack, tires cost a fortune (but hey they do a great job at handling the road). I've but 50k on mine and the only thing i've had to do is replace a battery!!! Can't ask for more than that.

Superb looks
very comfortable
handling
big size
different from all the other coupes

Weakness:

V6 has needs at least 50Hp more
chassie should be more rigid

It looks so great that you tend to forget anithing else
but after 40000 Km it started making all kinds of noises
and having all sorts of minor problems which added togehter
make a big bill to pay at the mechanic.
And wors of all: parts are incredibly costly for this car
in europe.

Strength:

- smooth V6 begs to be wound up
- sticks like crazy glue to the pavement
- unique styling
- enormous trunk

Weakness:

- Squeaks and Rattles
- Synchros go bad in 5spd around 60K miles
- brake calipers have been known to seize
- 5 spoke wheels develop cracks
- poor fit/finish compared to imports
- noisy valve tappets
- cheap paint fades faster than many other cars

Until I drove my friend's new Probe SE in 1993 I didn't think much of them. But after one test drive I knew this was the car that I wanted. The sporty look grew on me quickly and handling of the car is only comparable to other cars that cost more than twice the price.
I originally bought a 1993 SE, but 4 months later when I could affort it, I stepped up to a 1993 GT (approx $14,000 in Dec. 95). My girlfriend liked the car so much that she ended up purchasing a 1995 GT also, so I've had a lot of time to evaluate them.
After almost 5 years with my Probe I still can't think of another car in it's price range that I like as much. It's very easy and fun to drive, but the problem areas I've listed above have been noticed by quite a few other Probe owners as well, and chances are you will encounter them as well. The most annoying (and expensive) has been the tranny synchros that wear out and make it harder and harder to get the car into gear- especially the 2-3 shift. It's about a $1,200 repair from the dealer.
The Probe could also use about 50 extra horsepower to keep up with other cars in its class like the Mitsubishi Eclipse. I've found increasing support in the aftermarket world for performance parts for the car. So far I've invested over $7,000 in performance and stereo upgrades. If you're really crazy, there are even Japanese spec 2.5 liter engines rated at 200hp and turbo and supercharger systems as well. I recently bought a newer car but have decided to keep the Probe to see just how far and fast I can build it up. It'd be a shame to sell it, as they have such a terrible resale value.
My girlfriend's Probe is completely stock on the other hand and just turned 90K miles. To be honest,it is full of little squeaks and rattles and annoying quirks such as difficult power steering, clunking noises from the front sway bar bushings (mine went through the same thing), and clacking noises from the valves when cold. It has been so problamatic that we're close to selling it and getting either an Eclipse Spyder GST or Toyota Supra Twin Turbo.
If you decide to get a Probe, you may get one like my '93 that has never left me stranded and had only a few problems covered under warranty, or you may get one like my girlfriend's which has had more than a few aggraviting problems. Either way, you're going to get a car that's still pretty damn fun to drive.

Weakness:

Rattles. Small back seat. On rough roads it rides harshly. Meant for perfect roads. Torque Steer.

Smooth V-6 provides good amount of power along with good fuel enconomy. Grips corners like crazy glue, very hard to fishtail. Nice firm suspension. Good break response and distance. Sweet looking.
