Ford Taurus SES
Strength:
Duratech V6 performance is outstanding, ride and handling are great, reliability is unmatched, looks awsome.
Weakness:
Hard to see corners when parking in a tight spot. I had not owned a Ford product since 1996 Ford Taurus. I have the SES Sport model, with leather, bucket seats, console, floor shift, and the 24 valve Duratech V6. I have been very pleased with the car. It hase been flawless during the 9 months that I have owned it. We have spent the last 12 years driving mini vans and SUV's. The Taurus is a welcome change, especially the handling and power of the Duratech V6. One amazing thing is the 2002 Taurus only cost $3000 more than the 1986 model that I also bought new. I feel no other automobile at this time can compare with the Taurus value. I will never go back to SUV's. Similar Products Used: Found nothing that would compare. |

Taurus Wgn SE
Strength:
Roomy. Great value for the money, Reliable (so far). A roof rack that is more accessible than a minivan or SUV roofrack.
Weakness:
Hard seats. So-so gas mileage. I've had my Taurus Wgn for 9 months. It's my second Taurus Wgn, the first being an '88 that I had for 9 yrs. Sold it w/ 125k. It was for the most part a pretty good car. I'd rate it a 3 of 5. I'd rate the new one at 3.75 of 5. I bought my new one from a dealer who had it on their lot for a few months. I got a great deal on it as I think the dealer wanted to move it. It was in immaculate shape w/ new tires, and brakes. The bad news is Taurus's depreciate like crazy but that's the good news for used car buyers. Mine had 43k when I bought it and it currently has nearly 52k. Not a problem w/ the car. It's roomy and good looking (except for the oddly sloping shape of the rear passenger doors - watch your head when you get it in). I have a bike/bikes I often haul and the roof rack is easy to put bikes on. I can also easily fit a bike w/ the wheels still on, inside the car w/ the 1/2 the rear seat folded down. Mine has the Vulkan 3.0 liter engine. It's has adequate power but no more. It also seems a bit of a gas hog as I'm hard pressed to get much more than 25mpg. My '88 wgn often got near 30mpg. Mine is the FFV (flex fuel vehicle) and maybe that has something to do w/ it. This one feels like it's a good bit heavier a car and maybe the extra weight is the cuprit. I suspect mine was a fleet vehicle as it has a basic interior. I don't like the seats in the car. They're really hard. That gets old on longer trips. So far the cars been great w/o any problems. I wouldn't hesitate buying another of the year 2000 and beyond redesigned models. The older '96 -'99's were ugly w/ cheap looking interiors. I just need a decent looking, roomy, affordable and reliable car and this fits the bill nicely. The wgn model is great. I think it's more practical, comfortable, affordable and certainly at least as roomy as an SUV (though I've never had the latter). I especially like the way the cruise control works on Fords. I like my wgn a lot. Similar Products Used: '88 Taurus Wgn. |

We like the car, which seems odd to say considering the trouble it's given us, but up until now it really hadn't been a problem. I like the car, but 119,000 miles on a well maintained vehicle, the engine should NOT go out like this. People are always so scared of high mileage, but if a car is maintained correctly, it isn't an issue. My wife likes the way it handles, and we decided with a new engine, it has some life left in it.
Weakness:
Obviously, the engine, and I have been reading about the problems people have been having with the transmission. I can only pray that I don't have a problem with that. Other then that the car has been fine. Bought the car with 87,000 miles on it. I wasn't worried about high miles, because it had only one owner, who traveled (highway miles) a lot, and it had a car fax paper. I didn't have any real troubles (door molding, cigarette lighter) until about 105,000 when my engine light came on. Had it checked out at dealership, and they suggested a routine maint. repair (spark plugs, clean injectors etc.) It was fine until about 1000 miles later when the light came back on. Took it in and was told it needed an oxygen sensor replaced in the exhaust. At 119,000 miles the light came back on, and it would not turn over. Mind you, I took very good care of this car (oil changes, balance rotate, transmission change plus other small repairs like shocks), long story short, I needed a new engine because the heads were warped and the walls were scored. the mech said one reason for that is overheating, which NEVER happened when we drove the car. Now I'm in the hole $6,000 for a Ford re-manufactured engine (and new struts). It was still cheaper then buying a new car, not to mention the fact that I was still paying on it. I wish I had read the reviews on this site before I purchased this car, because this seems to be a reaccuring theme. Similar Products Used: merc cougar-91 xr7 supercharger merc cougar 87 ls |

Hard to see out. Expensive to repair. Bought car from Ford. Car was Certfied as gone through a 101 pt inspection. Been back for.O2 Sensor 283.00. Alignment ... was toed in 1 1/2 inches! Replace battery. They left the battery puller on top of the engine to be found by me days later.Back hatch lever broke. They didn't have the part and tried to charge me twice for labor, This at Mossy Ford in SD! Mossy charged 158.00 to run a DX as they wouldn't accept the codes that came up from the other place> They then tried to get me to Tune it up for only 190.00!! Such a bargain. Did you know that Ford does not give you a penny of a break off the DX even if you have the car fixed by them. What an add on. Buyer beware!. Similar Products Used: none |

Air bags (two), comfortable to drive, looks good.
Weakness:
At 96,000 miles I lost the speed sensor on you sorry excuse for a tranny, the AXOD. It caused the engine to overrev and then to my surprise lost the bearing in the water pump which caused the engine to overheat and then proceeded to destroy itself. So now not only did I have to replace a tranny at 96,000, I had to replace the 3.8L engine too. The tranny was $2,500 and the engine was$ 3,500 which added together was $6,000. Don’t leave your seat yet, there is more. I paid $5,600 for the car which means after the addition of the $6,000 I actually paid $11, 600 for a $5,600 dollar car. Don’t go for the coffee yet, there is more. Now I owned the car for 14 months when this happened. Now in June of 2001 I was told my A/C Compressor was bad, to the tune of $1,600 dollars. I couldn’t afford it right then but in May of 2002, I did have it fixed at the cost of $1,800 dollars. So I now add $1,800 more to that price of $11,600 and it comes to $13,400 that I paid for a $5,600 dollar car. Did you think I was done, not even close. I have taken my car to my mechanic to have other items checked. I have been informed that I have to replace my fuel injectors, my catalyst agent and my heater core not to mention brakes, rear struts and rear stabilizer links to the tune of $5,000 dollars. Now lets add again, $13,400 plus the new $5,000 dollars equals $18,400 that I have spent on a $5,600 investment just to keep it running so I can get to work and school. Overall the car rides smooth and looks good. Similar Products Used: 1984 Ford THUNDERBIRD ELAN, lost engine at 98,000 |

A smooth fast ride with great looks. No mechanical problems.
Weakness:
Poor sound system soon to be taken care of. I was skeptical about buying another Ford after owning a Focus but 0% financing for 5 years and a relative's employee discount convinced me to try a Taurus. From the day I bought my Taurus, I have been absoulutely 100% satisfied. Unlike my Focus, it did not need to be taken in for service at just under a 100 miles for brakes. The Taurus is a smooth ride with great pick up. It also handles turns and curves well. The appearance package gives the car a sleek look and I really like the courtesy lights under the outside mirrors. There is also tons of trunk space. It was also great to be able to get the gear shift in the console instead of in the steering column. I would definitely recommend this car. For those of you that have complaints about older Taurus models that you bought used, what do you expect for a used car thats over ten years old? I've bought used cars in the past and all you are doing is inheriting someone else's problem(s). Although I do say, about 6 years ago I owned a used 91 or 92 Taurus and it was a good car then too. Transmission. Brakes, Steering, Cooling system. Struts. CV joints. Rust pops up over night. Rear hatch latch breaks easily. Needs a new weld to fix. Overpriced piece of junk. Ford should be ashamed to sell these. Piece of crap car, right off the lot. First, the brakes were bad when I test drove it, they said they'd fix it. NEVER did. Cooling system went within two months, they just put a leak repair in the radiator, and sent us on our way. Transmission went after two months. (They were indeed tired of seeing me at their door first thing in the morning). Cost me $200 for diagnosis, and was covered under warranty. They were suppose to do a 101 point check before the car left the lot. The ONLY thing they did was wash, and vacuum it. We'll NEVER buy another Ford. Shame on Ford for selling junk. |
