Model Reviewed: 3.8l V6 Taurus LX

Strength:

Comfortable, easy to drive

Weakness:

Terrible quality, factory recall after factory recall, riddled with design faults in the engine, transmission, suspension. Spent more time in the garage than out of it.

I would strongly recommend anybody to avoid Ford. They rush products to market without perfecting the designs, refuse to fix failures that are their own fault, and have the worst quality control of any car I've ever driven.

The problems, by the way, were not specific to my car but generic and applicable to all early 90s Taurus's (transmission) and pretty much any Ford with the 3.8L V6. My experiences with Ford dealers were also very much below-par.

Peace of mind, durability, performance, price, quality. First of all let me say that the people who are bashing on the Taurus, any model, arent' telling us something. Have they beat on the car, been in multiple accidents? It's amazing that someone would say that the car makes noise at highway speeds when they say that they just got the bumber crashed in half a week before. People, use your heads. NO wonder the car is failing or causing problems, TAKE CARE OF IT. I have had no major problems with any of the FOUR taurus' i have owned. Hmmm, how could that be? Well, because i know how to take care of a car. Regular maintenance, not flooring the accelerator all the time, and using my brain!!!!

Weakness:

I have heard people complain of transmission problems, but have never experienced it myself. had 134,000 miles on the first car, 75,000 on the second, 98,000 on the third, and currently have 65,000 on my 94 SHO. Yes, there is a cheaper feel to some of the dash and interior parts, but nothing i haven't seen in a Chevy, or Dodge. Even my girlfriends Honda Civic has cheap plasticy parts, and it is a 99.

YES, YES, YES, i would buy a million Taurus' and have no hesitations with it at all. From owning four myself with mileage ranging from 60,000 to 140,000, the Taurus can't be beat. I have even seen an 90 v-6 with over 230,000 miles. still ran great. Oh, by the way, the SHO has problems with the tranny and clutch because of the way the car is driven. IT is a very fast machine and is driven hard. You have to expect some problems when you take a sports car engine and try to put it into a four door family car. Just use your heads, take care of the cars and they will take care of you. Call me or email me if you have any questions at all. Even you chevy lovers and Ford haters. I'll set you straight.

Strength:

Styling, Roominess, handling

Weakness:

This car is a lemon. Gas mileage for a 3.0LV6 is more in line with a 5.4LV8 but without the power. New transmission at 45,000 km (28,000mi), (Ford Design Flaw) Rear disc rotors replaced at 50,000km (30,000 mi) because calipers fell out of alignment. Windshield wipers only work intermittently - Not good in the rainy Pacific Northwest region.

All in all I have spent over a quarter of the original purchase price in repairs in the 4 years I have owned this vehicle. This number includes Ford's "Goodwill" discounts. Never Again.

The quality just does not match that of a Camry, 626, or Audi. Spend more money up front and you won't be spending it later.

I like the power , shifts like a stick , I love the styling . Love the fact that if needed it seats 8 people . Love the way it handles and how much stuff I can fit in it

Weakness:

lousey cupholders .. cant charge cellphone while using cupholders .MAJOR COMPLAINT is that ALthough the stereo tape deck is nice sounding .. the lovely Oval heater/stereo doesnt allow for a nice update of anything but a stock stereo/cd player UGG

I would recommend this car .. We thought we were having problems with the heater core but found out it was a 5 buck thermostat ... <<<< I recomend highly getting second opinions before you have the heater core replaced .. I have enjoyed this car for two months .. once owned a 96' taurus Sedan but couldnt keep it because it was too small for a family of more than two.
I dont think you should get this car if you do alot of stop and go in-town driving .. I have already put 4000 miles on it .. all highway miles ... I think the car appriciates this ( ha ha ) I think I have the 200 hp vulcan v-6

Similar Products Used:

Dodge/chrysler/plymouth Minivans ... good for space but lousey for tranny problems Taurus is much more reliable than thease .. every minivan I have had has had major tranny problems except for my 92 plymouth voyager .. and that is ( i suspect ) because it already had 98,000 miles on it and probably had already been fixed.
BEST car in the world will ALWAYS BE A VOLVO

DURATEC ENGINE IS EXCITING, OVERALL COMFORT, NICE STYLING WITH THE OPTIONAL CHROME EXHAUST AND SPOILER, FUEL ECONOMY FOR THE PERFORMANCE AVAILABLE.

Weakness:

ALTHOUGH THE ENGINE REALLY ROCKS THE TRANSMISSION IS FROM HELL, YOU MUST REALLY KNOW HOW TO PLAY THE POWER BAND TO GET THE MOST OUT OF IT. IT SOMETIMES TAKES OFF LIKE A ROCKET AND OTHER TIMES IT WILL LEAVE YOU STANDING IN THE HOLE. HAD TERRIBLE WIND NOISE PROBLEMS, REALIGNING THE DOORS TOOK CARE OF THAT, RIDES LIKE A CADY NOW.

WOW, READING THE REVIEWS HAS ME MYSTIFIED. EITHER "GOLD" OR "LEMON". I'VE GOT A GOLD UNIT. HAVE PUT NO MONEY INTO CAR EXCEPT FOR THE TIRES AND BRAKES AND OF COUSE THE RELIGIOUS OIL CHANGES/RAD FLUSHES. MY CAR IS IN THE SAME CONDITION AS THE DAY I BOUGHT IT, IT'S A REAL EYE CATCHER FINISHED IN WHITE WITH ALL AVAILABLE OPTIONS. LOTS OF TOYS TO BREAK BUT NONE HAVE BROKE. I'M NERVOUS GOING TO TOUCH WOOD.

STYLING, COMFORT, INTERIOR NOISE LEVELS, HANDLING AND FIT / FINISH GOES TO FORD. THE ENTERY LEVEL CENTURY IS A MORE LUXARY ORIENTED CAR OFFERING CREATURE COMFORTS BUT SACRIFICING PERFORMANCE.

Everything under the hood

I do not recommend this car for anyone. I had it six months when the first transmission went out, then 13 months later it went out again. It is a very expensive thing to fix and time consuming. Then about a year later the entire motor had to be replaced along with the water pump, radiator, altenator, battery, and tie rod ends. Shortly after that the voltage regulator went out. Then this piece of garbage ran for 18 months with no major problems. Then the harmonic balancer went out messing up everything from the motor mount to the main and rod bearings, breaking off a main bolt. I give up with this car and it is being scrapped for junk, something I should have down 4 years ago when the first trany went out. I do not wish this car on my worst emeny

Model Reviewed: GL Sedan, 3.8L/automatic

Strength:

The 3.8L engine. It is noticeably more powerful than the 3.0 engine. Controls are well laid out.

Weakness:

Too much wind noise at highway speed-you could feel cold air coming into the car through the window and door seals. Cooling fan and switch had to be replaced, after which we continued to have problems with the car running hot (it only overheated once). Transmission would not downshift back into low when the brakes were applied-when stepping on the accelerator the car sat there for a few seconds before the transmission would engage, usually with a lurch and chirping of the tires. I was told that it was probably a motor mount problem although it could also have been the transmission. Very low resale/trade value. I damn near had to give the car away when I traded it in.

Although I had very good luck with my first Taurus, I cannot recommend the based on the experiences of several friends and co-workers who have had major transmission problems with theirs.

Everything. I love this car! It runs great! And I have tested it well. I hit a deer with it, and I even totalled it later. We had it fixed both times, and it's still running wonderfully!!!

Weakness:

I can't think of anything. There are NO Weaknesses to this car at all!

Obviously we are a Ford family. We have had nothing but Great Luck with these products. I won't buy anything other than a Ford! We bought the Taurus in Dec 92 and it's still running strong with 165,000 miles on it. I know that I can get 200,000 miles out of it. We have used it on long trips and short trips. There has never been a problem with this car.
I can't wait to buy another Taurus (just because I'm ready for a new car)!! But I am going to wait until I am driving a few less miles a week. I don't want to put all those miles on a brand new car.

If possible I'd give it TEN stars!!!
