Model Reviewed: LX Wagon

Strength:

Lots of options for the price. Very quiet car with a smooth ride. Good acceleration with Duratec V6. Wagon has flip-out seats in the back for children with shoulder belts. Back seats flip down to floor for lots of space.

Weakness:

Fit and finish is not the best - lots of plastic. Reliability has been a problem - 2 major transmission repairs (4 speed automatic) totalling $3,000 (thank goodness I bought the extended warranty), a leaking gas tank and other minor stuff. Poor gas mileage for a 6 cylinder.

Overall a decent car for the price if you get the fully optioned LX model. The SE model is very basic. A solid car, rides well and for the most part, is reliable. The interior fit and finish could be better although the exterior fit, finish and paint quality is quite good. More room than other cars in the same category. With the Duratec 24 valve engine, power is substantial, but at the price of substandard gas mileage. Parts are generally not too expensive and Ford service is widely available. Has a conservative European flavour to it that GM and Chrysler lack. Resale value does not hold well, as for any North American car, but this one might be a keeper.

Strength:

200 horse 24 valve 3.0 V6 is a great motor, great power to weight ratio love the sound of dual exuast, great handling on road

Weakness:

Transmission shifts to first to acclerate while passing, and accelerating

If you like an affordable powerful car this is the one. Great room and comfortable seats. Pretty good radio for a stocker. Rear A/C, powered moon roof good stuff. Good on gas for performance motor. Great family car and good car for the money.

Strength:

Quick off the line, quiet engine, beautiful steering, lots of room, comfortable, ergonomical, good gas mileage, safety.

Weakness:

Usual Taurus problems, ex-motor mounts (which lead to A/C probs), head gasket blow-out. Also, despite good mileage, the gas tank is too small. Low resale value (I dont know why!)

I drove an 89 Taurus for a few years, and I was impressed with everything except the lack of power from the 3.0 engine. I liked the positions of the climate controls, radio, dials, lights, etc (even though there was no tachometer). Since that one somehow survived beautifully through 7 years of being the family car, 4 more belonging to a teenager (me), and still running incredibly well despite being brought to well over 100k, I wanted another Taurus. I found a 93 in good condition that I could afford.
The 3.8L engine almost scared me after 4 years with a 3.0. I went to pull out of the parking lot to test drive it, and the tires squeeled. When they finally grabbed, my head snapped back and the car took off like a rocket.
My biggest beef was solved, the display and climate controls were almost in the same place, the rear defogger was in a better spot, and the car handled great. All of my problems with the old Taurus were solved, even though there still wasnt a tach.
I would recommend this car to anyone I care about. Its one of the safest on the road, its reliable, with the above mentioned exceptions-by the way, my 89 has never blown a head gasket and its at almost 150k. This car is comfortable, it has plenty of room, and its stylish. Ford stretched the envelope in 96 with that design, but the 2000+ models look great. If Ford continues to build the Taurus with the same quality as the 2 that I've owned, I will never consider another family car.

Smooth, quiet, powerful, comfortable decent room and gas mileage

Weakness:

air conditioning repair

Paid 8,500 for it four years old with 33,000 miles. Been a pretty good car, other than the air conditioning repairs. Other than that, over 95,000 miles the only other repairs have been rear struts, water pump, and new tires.

Still running strong, though I have to say I have never liked the transmission in it, has been that way since I bought it.

I think it has been a great car for the money, and I don't think it will be a problem for it to reach my goal of 120,000 miles. They are always a great used car value.

Strength:

Low price, safety(good crash ratings), dash design, big trunk space. ride quality. radio control, above average fuel economy. too common.

Weakness:

poor reliability. low quality construction, lots of wind noise, poor resale value, poor dealer service, poor acceleration, and medicore braking even with 4wheel disk+abs+205cm goodyear tires.

taurus is well designed car for as a family sedan, but it has terrible reliability problem especially auto transmission. i had 2 1990 tauruses and one 1994, and all 3 had same transmission problems( inbalance torque converter and leaking inner seals jurky shifting) + major electrical problems which dealers could not fix(fixed but problems came back after a month). too much wind noise for this class of car. brake is soft, and engine works like 4cyliner one. many interiors rattles.(no, it does not have 20k miles but only 5.5k miles). i would not keep this car if it did not have 5 star crash rating. i like camry much better because it is free of annoyances, but bit small, and expensive, and striped for its price. 2000 sonata gls v6 is currently my favority because it is well made and comfortable though it has too soft suspension. both sonata and camry have good crash ratings.

ENGINE! 200hp/V6 rocks. Climate Control, Remote Keyless Entry, Powered Sunroof, the dual exhaust, cruise control, Keyed alarm, and car alarm; All FACTORY.

Weakness:

The transmission sometimes chooses the wrong gear to be in while in passing gear.

I paid 12,500.00 US for my used 98 SE. It had 24,000 miles on it when I bought it. Let me just say that this fine machine is the fastest car I have ever owned. It has beaten everything that has come against me. I love it, people thin kI have a Taurus, so they think its just a FAMILY car, yeah right. I love all the factory options that came with my car, like the passive and non passive car alarms, the remote keyless entry with panic and trunk release on it. The dual exhaust looks nice from the rear. And all the goodies on the inside. I know cars and haslf, on in a dozen, some are lemons, and some are gold, I thin kI got a gold one finally. My next car will def be another Taurus

Strength:

Roomy. Pretty quick when it needs to be.

Weakness:

The stack of repair bills and cancelled checks that fill up a folder and my wife yelling at me because we have to fix it again.

Bought the car in '83 for $9000 to use as a 2nd vehicle and it only had 33k miles. Not bad for the best selling car in America right? We have only put 52k miles on it in 8 years which, at 86k miles should still be a solid car. One would think. We have poured a whopping $9700 in repairs and maintenance into it including 2 Transmissions. Thats $.18/mile. Or how about this, 24 trips to the repair shop averaging $405 per visit. On the surface one would think I'm either a fool or just a complete idiot. My father used to tell me that if you take care of your car it will last for years. When I think back thru my family history, we've never owned a Ford. Maybe my dad was actually right....and that I truely am a complete idiot. The reason I'm visiting this site today is because it's October and we have no heat in the car at the moment. Funny, because it was only six months ago that we spent $654 to replace the Heater Core. Go figure!

I cant say i like much about it as of now. Its a comfortable car....the heat is nice...but thats about it.

Weakness:

The fact i have spent over 4500 dollars on my car in the 2 years of owning it. I think my car keeps the mechanics extremely busey. There has been so much extensive work done to it, it couldnt even begin to tell you what has been fixed...and its not small things...major things. Did i mention it loves to stall in the middle of major roadways??

I Paid 5500 for my car, major diappointment. I will make sure to NEVER purchase any type of ford product or vechile in the future...quite frankly ford automobiles scare me and have sucked my bank account dry. Id have 5000 to my name now if i didnt dump it into the car that gives me the constant middle finger.

Model Reviewed: Taurus GL Wagon

Strength:

It has adequate engine strength, seats 6, lots of cargo room, better than an SUV because it has lots of cargo space and you can still put a roof rack etc on top and be able to go under parking garages

Weakness:

We had the engine replaced, many other parts replaced, we make lots of trips, and have broken down in the Taurus at least twice while out in the country. The materials inside are cheap cheap cheap, they break soo easily. The buttons on the stereo start to stick after awhile so they are really hard to push. The beige cloth seats show the stains very badly. The speedometer sometimes does not work. The plastic covering on the window cranks are coming off. And on and on and on!

Paid a little under 10k in 96, had about 40,000 miles on it, now have 112,000 on it. Take it on lots of trips. I would never recommend anything other than a foreign car, (Toyota, Nissan, Mitsubishi, etc)but it does seem to be better than a lot of other domestic wagons and sedans from '94. If you're really desperate, and in need of a cheap car that has a good engine, you could get this car, but I really wouldn't recomend it.
