Strength:

The size and power. It has been a cop car, which powered by a 3.8L V6, ABS on 4 disc brakes. Somehow it fit 3 adults and 3 kids. I always feel that it runs great in rain and snow. It feels solid and safe. It was rear-ended by a toyota corolla (the driver said he didn't notice my car was on complete stop) in front of a Ford F150 truck at traffic light. The Corolla was totalled. My Taurus just needed new cover for the front and back. It is good for long trip.

Weakness:

Lack of smoothness compare to the imports for the ride. Low resale value. I can always hear noises comes from the doors and the rear. The gas tank is way too small for the car. I get 18-19 mile in the city ,and it needs a fill-up about 230 miles. I get better mileage on the highway.

I paid $10500 with 25000 miles on it 3 years ago. Since then we put in 38000 miles on it. It did NOT give us any major problem so far. I heard that 70000 miles is mark for the beginning of problem, such as head gasket, Tansmision... Ford had offered me a extended warranty to 75000 miles or $3000 certificate toward a new Ford a year ago. I took the extended warranty after I checked the resale value. I found a local Ford dealer that does a decent job and cares. It makes me feel good as they still care about their products. I will keep the Taurus 'til the warranty runs out, and I like driving it than my wife's 4-cylinder Toyota Camry. But I won't buy a Taurus anymore, I like the Mazda lineup only if Ford decides not to ruin the joint business.

99 Toyota Camry, 82 Corolla, 92 Tecel, 85 VW Jetta(the Worst), 89 Mazda 323, 96 Mazda B2300. The Camry's ride is very smooth, it needs the V6 and ABS to be perfect. I think our car take care of us if we take care of it first. Imports are not way better than the American cars, but the way how we drive it matter. And we pay more for the imports too.

Strength:

THE MOTOR!!!!!!!!!!

Weakness:

Pretty much everything else...Oh yeah...and the horrendous re-sale value...You practically have to give it away...

Except for the engine, it's just another Taurus. Intermittent wipers don't work. Cruise control doesn't work. Left rear window won't roll down. CD player works only half the time. Brakes are a disaster waiting to happen. Considering all that, I still hated to see it go. Traded it in recently. The SHO's with the 5 speed's are EXTREMELY fun to drive. It's a grocery getter that can whoop a$$ on a mustang. Find a solid SHO motor and drop into into anything other than a Taurus.

Strength:

Roomy, fairly good drive.

Weakness:

I have changed everything related to water on this vehicle. Water pump, heater core, radiator, and now the head gasket. After reading so many reviews about the head gasket I believe that Ford has to know that a problem exists.

I wouldn't recommend this vehicle to anyone. I'll never own a Ford (Fix Or Repair Daily) again. Don't buy this vehicle.

Strength:

roomie, but big deal when everything else is crap!

Weakness:

EVERYTHING

After owning a Taurus I will never own a Ford vehicle again. The car was on its 5th speedometer when we got rid of it. Ford paid for the first 3, then we had to start paying. I tried to tell them if they would have fixed it right the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd time we wouldn't have to fight about it. I would call Ford and get the same lines...."we understand and we are sorry", it was all scripted!! Glad to get rid of a Ford product!! This was just one of the many many problems with this car!

Strength:

My Mom bought this car from her sister & unfortunately is was not a
female bonding experience....The only strength for this lemon is it looks
o.k. just don't plan on going far...wear your sneakers, you'll need em.

Weakness:

Well about a mo. after buying it, it went into the shop for the oil pan
gasket, then about a month later the head gaskets, it went in the shop for
the last time, couldn't find noting wrong....oil pump froze engine seized...

Paid about 4,500.00 about 6 months ago, it's worth practically nothing
with a seized engine... I wouldn't recommend this year/model to
anyone... Ford Motor Co. is doin the old downward spiral.....

Strength:

Interior, audio system, climate control, handling, acceleration,
seat comfort, leg room

Weakness:

Some minor mechanical glitches, headrests too low

Got the 1999 Taurus when I totalled a 1992 on the interstate...only
lost 2" in the passenger compartment. Had a problem with the 3.0L
Duratec pinging in hot weather...was corrected through a software
upgrade to the computer. Overall an excellent vehicle, especially
at $10,000 less than a Camry. The Camry may have better fit-and-finish
than the Taurus but doesn't seem to perform or feel any better.

Strength:

Reliable, reliable, reliable (read below). Smooth ride, good gas mileage, pretty fast (beat a 4-cyl Mustang every time). Thing was a tank

Weakness:

No cupholders.

Man this car was a great first car. Me and my friends used to beat the hell out of it. We actually used to JUMP this car off of small inclines and I never had ANY problems in the 3 years I drove it. The only thing ever done to it was a A/C recharge. So it was a tank and I was upset when my Brother totalled it. That was a while ago but I though I would post how my '86 Taurus was one hell of a car.

Strength:

The SHO engine is like nothing i've ever seen, heard, or felt. The power is imaculate. 0-60 times are well under 7 seconds with a standard transmission. 1/4 miles times for the sedan are amasingly sub 15 seconds (with drag radials) and trap speeds over 90 mph. Roominess and electronic features also add to the package. In my honest oppinion this car could not be better for what i paid for it.

Weakness:

The cars only weekness's include; ford's idea of trying to keep it a "scencible sedan" the exasust system was severly clogged when i purchased it. The engine computer was also commanding the engine to proform at a low pace. But this is all for the sake of the SHO week drive line which abruptley refused to continue working after i added cat-back exhaust and had the engine computer reprogramed.

I would recomened this car only to the ford proformance car enthusist. It is a piece of driving art. That proforms how and when you want it to. The price (stock) was a mere $3000.

Strength:

IT RUNS GOOD AND HASN'T REALLY GIVEN ME MAJOR PROBLEMS.

Weakness:

NO DASH BOARD CUP HOLDERS, IT ALSO SOUNDS LIKE MY TRANSMISSION IS SLIPPING AT CERTAIN SPEADS, AND SOMETIMES IT HARD TO MOVE MY GEARS. ALSO, I KEEP HAVING COOLANT PROBLEMS, IT KEEP LEAKING I'VE HAD IT CHECK FOR LEAKS AND THE MECHANIC CAN'T FIND ONE. SO I HAVE TO CONSTANTLY BUT COOLANT IN IT. WHICH LAST A COUPLE OF WEEKS AND I HAVE TO DO IT A CAN. THE RADIO KEEPS BREAKING FOR SOME REASON.

YES WITH SOME COMMITMENT FROM FORD TO LISTEN TO ITS CUSTOMERS AND PROVIDE A BETTER PRODUCT AND STAND BY THEIR DEFECTS. FORD HAD A RECALL ON THE COOLANT SYSTEM BACK IN 1999. THEY NEVER CONTACTED ME, I LEARNED ABOUT WHEN I TOOK MY CAR IN FOR INSPECTION AND THEY INFORMED ME THEN. THE ABOVE PROBLEM WAS HAPPENING THEN. I WANDER IF THEY FIXED THE PROBLEM AT ALL.

Strength:

It handles pretty well on the highway. I like the roominess, yet it does not feel like Granny's car. I love the color(Graphite Blue) and the interior is very nice.

Weakness:

The ovalness has stared getting on my nerves. I recently had to have the cable replaced on the steering column with less than 40K miles. It seems to "jump" at stop lights and it sounds like it is having a rough time accelerating. Not to mention the shift on the column seems a bit outdated.

I paid a reasonable price($13899) for a used car with 19K miles on it. The only downfall was I did not get remote keyless entry. The Taurus has come a long way from its early beginnings, but I still don't think the 1996-1999 models quite meet all expectations(or at least mine). I am getting ready to trade my Taurus and am considering the 2001 SES. My friend has one and I am VERY impressed with the interior and esp. the 24V 200hp engine. I would recommend the Taurus to people who need a great dependable car, don't have alot of money, and are just starting out. I do feel like you can get alot of car for your money with the newer models.
