Ford Thunderbird (2002 - 2005) Midsize | Compact

DESCRIPTION

After being on hiatus for several years, Ford introduced a new Thunderbird for 2002. Returning to the original formula for the Thunderbird, the latest version had a two-seat coupe/convertible layout like the first-generation Thunderbird and retrofuturistic styling to match.

I bought this car a year old in 1991. I owned it until 1997. It was fantastic. It is still one of, if not my favorite cars that I have had.
It was titanium outside with black leather inside. The engine never had any major problems, although I had a few minor electrical problems (radio, window). This car always looked great, I still believe it was ahead of its time in its styling, and it was a rocket. Once when I was getting my brakes done, the mechanic drove it to check the brakes and couldn't believe how fast it was, he said he had a mustang and the SC was much faster.
I loved this car and just wanted to drop a note singing its praises.

Strength:

Interior is nice and body is nice.

Weakness:

Where do I begin.....blown head gasket....twice....replaced engine when bottom half went out.....replaced starterd, water pump (3 times), car is on ramps more than on road. Out of the 3 yrs. that I have owned this vehicle it has only been on the road 1 1/2 yrs. Now the rear end has some problems.

Never, never, never own a Ford Thunderbird unless you enjoy forking out the cash time and time again.

Model Reviewed: thunderbird 3.8L v6

Strength:

The Thunderbird has a few desirable qualities about it.One being it's overall appearance and style. The second being the way it drives and handles during daily operation. The third and final quality would have to be the reasonable value these cars carry when looking to buy a secondhand car.

Weakness:

The first weakness found through bad experiance was a weak engine, meaning both head gaskets blowing out at 140,000km's.While fixing this problem I was informed that this was a common problem for the 3.8 v6,not something I wanted to here!!! When I purchased the car the dealer had to put brakes all the way around the car in order to pass the safety inspection. Seems to me that brakes are a problem to!!! The final weakness would have to be the way the transmission shifts, not good!!!

To be totally honest I would NOT reccomend a 1992 Thunderbird to anybody looking to buy a good secondhand vehical simply due to the fact that these cars are known for having numerous mechanical problems. BUYER BEWARE!!!!!!

Strength:

The only USA-made inexpensive midsize V8 RWD 2-door manufactured after 1987 (along with platform-mate Cougar)
Seats 4 full-grown adults comfortably
Comfortable ride, good handling from having independent suspension both front and rear
Good at being fun to drive when you want to have fun, and a comfortable car when you just want to get home
Beautiful dashboard with great ergonomics
Big trunk
Good performing, good sounding 4.6L SOHC V8 engine with 205 hp

Weakness:

Brake rotors warp easily
4.6L intake manifold may crack at crossover between heads -- Ford will replace it only if it fails
3.8L headgaskets may be an issue
4R70W automatic transmission does not tolerate abuse well, runs hot, needs fluid changes at 20,000 mi. intervals to survive

I've been driving this car for almost 3 years and have loved the experience. While I wish the 4.6L V8 had more power, it has more than enough for most situations, and can get the car to freeway speed well before you reach the end of the on-ramp. While it's pulling you up to highway speed you'll be treated to one of the sweetest exhaust notes I've ever heard. With this car I've outrun my friend who drives a 3rd-generation Z28 Camaro, but the Bird can't hang with my dad's '93 STS or '70 GTO. On slippery surfaces the car is fairly predictable, it won't surprise you unless you do something stupid. All I've ever had is RWD cars, and this is the best handling one I've driven. While this is no sports car, it deals with curves well, especially if you replace the stock rubber with 235/60R15 tires like I did. Four people can comfortably fit in this car, unlike almost any other RWD 2-door in the market.

Strength:

Great highway cruiser for long trips. Reasonable mpg and power out of the generic modular 4.6 v8 (up to 29mpg highway). Adequate power but not mind numbing. Runs on 87 octane gas. No major troubles. The ABS, 4 wheel disk brakes and electronic traction control combined with Michelin MXV4 V rated touring tires and a larger 1.125 inch ADDCO rear stabilizer bar drastically improve handling. Driving in snow is no worse than any other RWD car. You will need snow tires on the back during winter months.

Weakness:

All MN12 T-Birds and Cougars have the following weaknesses... front brake rotor warp, weak transmissions. 1996-1997 4.6 engines across the entire Ford product line used plastic intake manifolds that tend to crack and leak coolant. the 1994-1995 4.6 models use metal intakes and do not have the cracking problem. The brakes can be upgraded to stop rotor warp. KVR performance and pthers sell cross drilled rotors that stay cool and do not warp. Others suggest buying replacement name brand made in USA or Canada high quality replacement rotors that are about twice the price of the typical Chineese or Mexican made rotors but are said not to warp. The 3.8 v6 engines are okay for grocery getting duty but no more than that. They blow head gaskets. The transmissions were slowly upgraded thruout the life of the MN12 platform.. the biggest improvement seen during the 1995 model year and then during the 1997 model year. If you blow the transmission up the best repair is to go to Ford dealer and have them replace it with a current version of the transmission with ALL the upgrades. It is worth the extra money. If you buy this car the first thing you want to do is dump ALL the transmission fluid, add an eternal cooler, a deeper sump pan, and refill with Mercon V semisynthetic fluid.

This is not a race car. It handles nicely out of the box but can be improved with some minor aftermarket parts. There are solutions for the well known failure points. The BEST web sites to visit to get all the info you need on these cars is http://www.tccoa.com and http://www.mn12performance.com Do not buy this car if you want bone jarring performance. This is a classic rear wheel drive, medium size 2 door coupe and does this job quite nicely once you make some minor improvements. Features like the IRS rear end have been transplanted into the Mustang Cobras. You get alot for your money as long as you stay away from the V6 models

Strength:

Solid body and nice style. Smoothe ride. Not that bad on fuel economy given the weight of the vehicle.

Weakness:

Weak engine for the weight of the car.

I like the thunderbird 89' through the 90's...especially mine. The 232 V6 was okay but lacked any power. After it went out ( 168,000 miles later ) I traded it for a 302 V8 stroked to 347.
This car rides great even with the modifications to the suspension and rims. The ride is THREE TIMES that of my brother's firebird or my fathers Probe GT. At 100 MPH + those cars feel like an overpowered go-cart..especailly the Probe.
Whatever problems people have with the T bird I cant say I've shared them. 200,000 miles ( and a good many of those under ' abuse ' ) since purchase and this car still is in FANTASTIC shape. Wouldnt trade it for anything.

PLASTIC intake manifold is junk, left me stranded after cracking. brakes are weak. convertible top leaks around windows. has a shake at 60 to 70 mph. transmission replaced at 40000 miles. only decent power. a big letdown for a sports car.

bought this car used and it was a big dissapointment to find out it was a weakling. ford has definately lost a future customer here. this is the second try on a ford that I have been upset with. not just for power but for inferior craftmanship and lack of concern when assembling. found bearings dry. wiring laid against moving parts as well as hot parts. brake components rusting into. ect...

Strength:

Power, speed, easy handling, gas mileage is not too bad for a car with this engine.

Weakness:

Mechanical problems are very expensive to fix; automatic seatbelts are more trouble than they're worth.

Overall, I have loved this car, but in the past six months I have had several (costly) problems: the O2 sensor went out, the repair was over $600. This model has automatic seatbelts and when the driver's side belt motor went out, it took two weeks to fix at a cost of $850. Now I'm experiencing transmission problems and shudder to think what the cost will be to fix it. This car has great speed and power (more than the '97 model) and handles well on the freeway, city streets, and open highway. Very safe also; I was hit from behind last year by a guy going 45 mph in a Silverado and his truck suffered more damage than my little sedan.
