Ford Thunderbird LX
Strength:
Good power with the 4.6L V8, nice styling, comfortable, quiet interior.
Weakness:
Fuel mileage could be better, but it is a "bigger" car. Some brake and transmission problems that Ford Motor Company refused to acknowledge. I've owned my Tbird for 3 years now. There is nothing I enjoy more than taking it down the highway with the tunes up and the cruise set at 70 Mph. The car rides fantastic and is very comfortable for 4 people. Fuel mileage could be better but I've always got my foot in it so that could be a reason. Fit and finish on my car was excellent. Doors fit and close like they are supposed to, and their are absolutely no flaws on performance white factory paint. Seats are comfortable and provide excellent support. My main beef is with Ford Motor Company itself. I recently had to replace the intake manifold on the car due to a manufacturing problem that Ford refused to recall unless it failed. This put alot of Tbird, Mustang, and Cougar owners in a terrible position - like driving a time bomb waiting to explode. Mine failed at 70 Mph, Christmas Day, at -20 Celcius. Coolant everywhere - car undriveable unless you wanted to cook your engine. This agrivated me terribly because not only was it on a joyous holiday, but I had heard about the recall 2 months prior and inquired about how I could get it fixed before it did leave me stranded. Their response was, "We will only replace the unit if it fails.." To make matters worst, I was told they would cover the tow job to the dealer to do the warranty recall work - wrong. Ford Motor Company in Toronto responded, "We are not responsible for getting the vehicle to the garage for warranty work or recall. That is the owners responsibility." This cost me $100. I was disgusted. Ford Motor Company new of the recall and turned their back on the consumer because calling back that many models of vehicles using that same engine, would cost them hundreds of millions of dollars. The shudder in the tranmissions was acknowleged by Ford and fixed promptly. Mine was recalled and I have 60,000 miles on the transmission with no problems ever since. The shudder showed up when the car had only 20,000 Kilometers - Kudos to Ford for that one. Brake problems seemed to be demographic in nature. If you were in a hot climate, and did alot of city driving, the rotors warped a lot sooner. If you lived in an average temperature climate, they tended to last the national average. Any brakes that failed due to warped rotors, were replaced with new, upgraded thicker rotors. Hard to criticize them for that. At any rate, I would highly recommend this car for any young adult looking for a performance car with style and a luxurious feel to it. I would also recommend that if anyone plans on buying one, make sure that the transmission changeup was done, and the intake manifold change completed as well. The call back reference code is 97M91. If you have a Tbird with 80-90,000 kilometers, beware - this is when the intake likes to fail. See your Ford dealer about replacement as soon as possible or it just may ruin your Christmas as well. |

Ford Thunderbird 3.8LV6
Strength:
The car was sporty looking and very comfortable and fun to drive.....especially after I put an original Mach 1 rear spoiler onto the trunk.
Weakness:
The engine was a piece of junk. Mechanical nightmare. It was ridiculously hard on gas and was constantly breaking down. I tried everything to make it work. Nice car if you are looking for a constant work hobby. Ford goofed when they put the mechanics into this one. Its alright if you want to keep a garage in business or send a part supplier's kid through college. I loved the looks and the handling of the car, but it cost me a fortune just to keep it on the road. There wasn't a major part on it I didn't pull apart to fix or replace.....and it still gave me nothing but problems. I don't think there's a cheap part on the car. The door skins rotted through within the first couple of years.....even with waxing and cleaning and undercoatings. I wasn't the only one to work on it, there is a long list of mechanics that looked at this one too.....so it just isn't me. The car was severly underpowered with the useless 3.8L V6 engine.....which was overloaded with pollution control, A/C, and all the fancy options. I would recommend the body style and suspension, but the drive-line has to go. Ford should have stuck with the good old 302 in this one......and drop the extra options and stick to a little more to simplicity. Similar Products Used: Dollor for dollar, it was the worst thing I ever owned. I babied it and took care of it religiously but it gave me nothing but grief. I've owned other vehicles that I paid less for and outright abused but didn't cost me nearly what this thing did. |

This car is just to fast that some of my friends wont race me except one and he has a 2000 honda civic SI (WHAT EVER DUDE) smoke him every time even made him wipe out. But the car is very powerfull and never lost a race with it yet in the street and freeway. even my Dad tried to jack it from me because he has 1990 dodge spirit(hahahaha)on the day i got it aint that some crap, but anyways it a very fast car expecially for your first one.
Weakness:
handles bad in the rain(if you suck)to easy to burn out in races begin, and cops cant seem to catch me, thats no fun. to hard to go the speed limit. I highly recommend this car for luxury and ALOT of speed, and if you dont want to lose races. plus I liked it alot because I get mad chicks with it.(Chicks dig the sunroof)And this is my very first car and i would make sure i chose a FAST car and I know I chose right. the way it looks from the front end, i get 18 MPG with it, that's not the best, but it's okay, they will rust if you drive them in the winter, fortunately, mine has never been driven in the winter and still has it's original paint job with no rust this car is great Similar Products Used: taurus, the t-bird is much much better looking, faster, smoother, the only thing that it's not better with is gas mileage. |

Wow... if you get it the right color and the right stuff on this thing, it will catch more eye's than a red viper with yellow rims. and ITS FAST! all i added was a k n airfilter and i blew a 35th aniversary mustang out of the water. I dont think the trany is too reliable but it hasent given me any problems yet.
Weakness:
.....um... nothing really. I guess the trany because the person I bought it from had it replaced. I hated fords all my life but when i saw this car and got in it and drove it around. It became my new best friend, and i plan on driving it untill it shoots rust out the engine. Similar Products Used: None |

Power and handling with 4.6 liter engine and Sport suspension package.
Weakness:
Ver little leg room in the back seat. The raked rear window provides additional trunk space at the expense of interior room. I purchased this car in March 1998 from the dealer when it was only 0ne year old. When I saw it on the lot it was "love at first sight." I bargained hard and got it for only $14,500 with only 10,500 miles on the odometer. In the 3 years that I have owned it (35,000 miles), it has run great- I only had to replace the Goodyear GT+4 tires (they were worn out at 29,000). The car is all black and I keep it immaculate. The only external modications that I have made are dual chrome exhausts tips and 4.6 liter badges for the front fenders. It is a real head turner. With the 4.6 liter engine, the Sport Package, traction control, anti-lock brakes, speed sensitive steering, etc.,you get a car that goes, stops, and handles with the best of them for a fraction of the price. Similar Products Used: My other car is a 1992 Buick LeSabre with 3.8 liter. I really like the T-Bird's firm ride- the LeSabre is entirely too soft. Both cars give abour 19 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway. The LeSabre, however, is the run away winner in the interior room category. |

It has great power. It can hang with my 5.0 mustang, sort of. Good ride. I like the inside. It is quite. I put alot of extras on the inside and it was not too hard to install them. The wires are easy to follow. Love it because it is rear wheel drive.
Weakness:
Brakes are not good. I replaced front rotors because of warping. I have a shuddering problem when shifting around 35 to 40. I have changed transmission fluid 4 times(has 90,000 miles). Takes too long to shift if you dog it and let off the gas around 50 mph. We bought the car in 1996 with 21,000 miles. My wife drives it to work. I love to stomp on the gas and feel it take off. I am the only person to have worked on the car. I replaced the spark plugs and wires, done some brake work of course, and changed the tires. It is a good car. We get about 25 to 27 miles to the gallon on the road and about 19 to 20 in town. It has power everything, even a moon roof. If you get one that has no bugs in it, it is a good value. We paid 14,000 for it one year old the sticker on it was 21600.00. It has a lot of trunk room. Similar Products Used: Not many cars to compare it too because this car is rear wheel drive. |
