Ford Thunderbird (2002 - 2005) Midsize | Compact

DESCRIPTION

After being on hiatus for several years, Ford introduced a new Thunderbird for 2002. Returning to the original formula for the Thunderbird, the latest version had a two-seat coupe/convertible layout like the first-generation Thunderbird and retrofuturistic styling to match.

Strength:

looks ok, rides well, handles speed bumps, good gas mileage on freeway, tight turning radius, reliable, useful trunk space, irs, hard to break into, pretty good a/c

Weakness:

big heavy doors, sloppy driveline, paint, no manual trans with v8, no lock on glove box, marginal acceleration, stupid top speed limiter (105)

about 18K new. Yeah, it's OK. I bought it because my ex girlfriend liked TBirds. It's worst fault is that Ford tried to give it too many good features (like the irs) at a low price... I guess that's why they quit making it: I don't think it could have been very profitable. It was a good car for older drivers wanting something big, with some class, and not costing very much. I have to keep it now because my present girlfriend likes it -- otherwise I'd buy something more fun to drive. I wish I'd bought the supercharged v6 with a standard transmission. Oh well...

Model Reviewed: / 3.8 V6 Super Charged

Strength:

Its extremely fast. I've been able to beat two 2000 Monte Carlo SS cars without red lining it. Rated at 250 horses, with minimum modification (K&N filter). I've heard of limits on the speed, but I have gotten as high as 120 with no problems. And everything ran smoothly at that speed.

Weakness:

Although it only has a V6, and superchargers don't eat up gas, it still consumes way too much. My parents 5.7 V8 sized van eats up just as much gas. I've had the spark plugs and wires replaced, but still low mpg. Could also be the fuel injector? Factory Transmission also can't handle the supercharged engines too well, and thats why I had to replace it.

For $3000 from my uncle at 100000 miles, it was a pretty good deal. All I ever had to fix in the past year was the transmission at about $1000. And the plugs and wires at about $150. $4100 for a car that lasted a year with all that power makes it a great value.

Model Reviewed: Ford Thunderbird LX V6

Strength:

Alot of power for only being a V6 in a very large car. Easy to use interior gadgets, fairly easy to work on. Has 170,000 miles on it and still driving and running great. Good paint on body not bumpers. Do well over 120 mph! Great handling, except in winter!

Weakness:

Brakes! Struts! Power steering makes loud noise turning or not. The exhaust sounds like it has a leak, but Midas swears that it doesn't. Shoots brake dust all over the car. Vinyl interior! Many problems the head light and fog light switches.Electrical problems. Transmission sometimes shifts rough.

This car with the stock V6 will run the 1/8th mile at about 78-80 mph an hour. That is not bad for a V6 with the car weighing at about 3600 lbs. The power steering pumps really sucks on these cars, I haven't heard go buy that wasn't making noises. Great car if you have alot of money to repair the way Ford should of built it. The AOD Tranny shift rough sometimes. I paid $3500.00 for this car it 130,00 miles on it. No problems with engine ever. I have put nearly 40,000 miles on it and no problems with motor or tranny besides shifting rough out of 1st into Drive. Ford had a recall on the headlight switch after I replaced it. The car overall it a great car except for the brakes. They seem to shoot dust all over the car. The rims constantly need to be cleaned of brake dust. I haqve replaced the front brakes twice and the rear brakes once.I like the car because it is fun to cruise around town, and has plenty of room for all of your buddies. Will run with the V6 Camaro although will not beat it. It will beat the pants off of V6 Mustang though. I have had several problems with overheating. I changed thermostats, flushed the systems twice and added Wetter Water today hopefully that did the trick. It doesn't get that great of gas mileage, although that is my fault because I can not seem to keep my foot out of it. It has great midrange power, especilly if you floor from 25 to about 85 if you can keep your head off of the headrest! I have no complaints on the way Ford built their 3.8 V6's. Although I know some people that have had them before and they think they really suck and are really sluggish, maybe I just got really lucky with mine or something. (Knock on wood.)

A lot of power, looks sharp. Great handling

Weakness:

Poor quality. LONG list of problem. Cracked intake manifold, throttle position sensor failed, crank position sensor failed, torque converter failed, plastic radiator cracked, and now the transmission is going. VERY POOR QUALITY

When the car runs, it runs great...But too bad Ford couldn't put any quality control into this car. I will never buy another Ford.

Strength:

Power, stability and big, big room. Great handling and torque. The faster you go, the more it sticks to the road. It is very comfortable to drive.

Weakness:

This car has been a catalogue of problems: has cracked twice the A/C compressor, the transmission needed major repair (it had the 4th gear pulverized), the starting gear burned in a parking lot, had to replace dashboard lights, the low radiator hose blew off without prior warning or leaking, a device for injecting air into the exhaust system got jammed and had to be taken off, so I had to look for other engine band that could fit, something called the MAZ valve made it work like if it had obstructed injectors and was very difficult to diagnose, even the dealer wasn't able to fix this one. The left door had problems to close and eventually it had to be taken off and weld the joint, since once it couldn't be closed anymore.
I had to replace alternator's ball bearings, engine support, shocks, light supports, and power locks.

I have spent in 11 months as much in repairs as much as I paid for it.
I cant recommend it to everyday use, maybe if you plan to make a major work to convert it to a quarter mile SuperStreet.
Dont buy this car if you dont want to see your mechanic's sons go to college instead of yours.

Strength:

Nice looking on any of them. Body is strong. I like BIG cars and that they are. Powerfull both my 90 V6 and my dad's 94V8. Very compfortable.

Weakness:

In my 1990 I can't say much because it has 187,000 on it and I got it with 160,000 and if anything I don't like on it is because it is very used. With my dad's the breaks were not the best and cuased shaking when stopping sometimes. The Transmition is one of the most common things that go wrong with these great cars. I wish ford had put stronger mechanical parts in it.

i got it cheap because of the high miles when i got it. My dad paid a lot for his and it need to many big repairs with in 2 years of buying it. it was only 3 years old when he got it.
I would recomend it if you are a big guy (or girl) and would like to have a lot of room. Its comfortable for all my friends too. If you want power then the 94 or 95s are good. If you want comfort and power and don't mind saying hi to your mechanic once in a while, or are a do it yourselfer then this could be a good or great car.
One thing i like is there are many of them and easy enough to find info about them.

Strength:

3.8 liter V6, mild mannered sports car, body lines, handling(w/21570R15 Firestone Firehawk SS20 rubbers),pretty good gas mileage when my foot's not on the floor(21mpg Hwy under normal circumstances), leg and head room(i'm 6'1)

Weakness:

3.8 liter V6(not enough power when needed), blown head gasgets 'round 92K, power drivers window cant roll down, no tachometer, speedo broke(cant read mph under 51mph), gets a LITTLE light n the back when wet, front brakes

My Dad paid $5,000 for it in April of 1998 with around 76,000 miles and a Pioneer CD player and perfect paint and body lines. Now, in August of 2000 it has 105,947 miles on it and still runs fine. I've put Pioneer 5X7's in it with a JL Audio WO12 in a Power Wedge box pushed with a RockFord Fosgate Punch 120a2 amp. I also plan to put a Flowmaster 2 chamber muffler on it to give a little more hp and show quality. I would definately recommend this car for someone on a tight budget like a student, but i would recommend you get the 5.0 H.O., for power!:)
