Strength:

V6 VTEC engine is smooth and powerful (though not so powerful with the air conditioning on); handing is excellent (love the double wishbone suspension). Solid, firm ride. You get a lot for the money (power everything, leather, Michelins, 6-CD changer with decent speakers plus cassette, sunroof, ABS, 4-wheel disc brakes, traction control, steering wheel audio controls, etc., etc. Also, not a bad looking car (my selling price included gold trim, dual exhaust chrome sleeves, striping, audio panel trim and ashtray/lighter). Had to have lighter replaced -- when it "popped" out it literally flew into the passenger compartment. Not a good idea at 70 mph. My third Accord. Nice mixture of functionality and accoutrement without spending a mortgage payment every month.

Weakness:

The paint. (I've noticed that other reviewers have commented on this.) I've never seen paint that scratches so easily (not with my '91 or '98 Accord V4s either-- maybe the dark emerald pearl color, non-metallic, has something to do with it. Maybe it's the "pearlcoat". Whatever, it sucks). Dealer is repainting front passenger side door now (and the car is only 6 weeks old). Credit to the dealer (Keenan Honda) -- they didn't give me any grief about doing it under warranty and even threw in a free loaner (albeit an Escort); but it's really annoying for a car of this ostensible level of quality. I test drove a 2001 Acura 3.2 TL and, if I had it to do over again, would have gone with it.

Give the Accord sedan a decent paint job and clearcoat; offer more metallic colors (like the Charcoal Granite Metallic on the '91 LX -- that was an extemely cool color); add heated side mirrors; offer NAV system as an option. Do that and this car really will be the value to beat for a midsize sedan (it's pretty close now), even if the price goes up a bit. I love Accords, but the paint on this one has really ticked me off. If not for that, I'd give it five stars in both categories.

Similar Products Used:

'01 Nissan Maxima SE -- hated it; mediocre acceleration, horrible handling; MacPherson front and rear suspension (ugh - rode like a Buick), and everything was an option. Plus the ugliest instrument cluster I've ever seen.

'01 Accura 3.2 TL -- Nice car, cool NAV system option, really loaded; basically rode and handled like an Accord, but a bit plusher -- only NO headroom (and I'm only 5-11). If I'd known what I do now about the Accord's paint, would have gone with it (even though I wasn't thrilled with the color).

'01 Sable Wagon (for my wife) -- Whole different feel. Can't say I liked it much. Didn't feel tight or solid like Hondas.

Honda lovers know that this is a driver's car, just give it gas and clean oil and she will love you back rain, sleet or snow. Ergonomically correct and still Tight as a drum after 126K miles. I can't believe this car doesn't squeak or rattle or leak anything after driving this car HARD in New York City for these past years. Honda changes body styles every 3 years but my 92 still looks nicer than any new hyundai or GM(yuck) or ford.
I have owned this car over 5 years

Weakness:

Hmmm-don't know any..but you cannot skimp on tires. I use Michelins. Oh yeah.. the power antenna goes after a few years but you can get one on ebay-new. Thermostat knob goes too but an easy fix.

I have owned this car over 5 years and did regular maintenance-timing belt, brakes. I changed the clutch recently when I returned from Europe, cause my rental car's clutch felt new..but the honda's new clutch doesn't feel much different.
I own 2 accords and a Honda VFR750F motorcycle. All my experiences with Hondas have been great. We are having a baby now and are looking for a 4 door-maybe. The wife needs an automatic, so she will get a newer accord & I will be keeping my 92 accord.
I have to laugh at the cheezwhiz reviewers who compare this car to Pontiacs and race from red lights. You can modify Hondas to race if thats your thing. But I use my motorcycle for speed thrills.
The 2.2 four is a nice engine when mated with a 5 speed, i love the sound at high revs. This car is nine years old and still feels new. Everything is designed perfectly, unlike GM there are no cheesy plastic buttons and lights. The gauges always work and so does the stock radio. If feel you must buy American.. buy an Accord, they are made in Ohio.

Very reliable car, never had a problem with it. Good Mpg usually 19 or more in city, and 29-30 in highway, cold ac. Decent pick up for a 4 cyl. Love the interior and body is nice, i like the flip up head lights.. It has 158,000 miles on it and its an auto.

Weakness:

Some times slow and weak braking at times. Paint chipping. Parts are very expensive but they sure last long though. Takes big bumps pretty hard. Lots of road noise at times.

I highly recommed this car, strong and takes teenage drivers from point a to b. I have driven this car very hard, i didnt like it at first. But it just wouldnt die on me, so i finally realized that hondas arent bad like some people say. I treat it like gold now. This is a car that can easily hit 200,000 miles.

Strength:

TCS; smoothness of transmission; acceleration; responsive transmission.

Weakness:

could do with more low end torque

The main reason I bought this one over the 2000, was because of the traction control. I was inclined to buy the VW GTI initially because it has TCS, but really wanted a larger "family" sized car - but with performance. The 2001 Accord V6 was an obvious choice. It can't compare to the VW VR6 as far as fun to drive, but the VR6 doesn't come in an automatic (I am married!!). The Accord is smooth (not a lexus), it has really nice high speed acceleration, but unfortunately it has to kick down to achieve that. Personally, at times I get a kick out of the gearing down, but sometimes, I wish the car had some more low end torque. It is unable to accelerate up an incline at 70mph without gearing down. I agree the Merc Benz 220 Kompressor which has a flat torque curve costs more than twice as much, but cars like the VW's give you superb low end torque at a more affordable price.

It is as much of a luxury car you can buy for under 25,000 with Honda's reliability and resale. With leather interiors and an indash 6 cd changer, sunroof and 200hp with TCS, and a smooth transmission, I think I couldn't be happier. To top it of, the WAF (Wife acceptance factor) is very high with this car. It doesn't have the finesse of the Audi TT, but I promised her that would be her next car.

If you want to buy V6 performance in a family car, want a touch of luxury, and want to run it to the ground over the next 10 years without trouble (or sell it 3-4 years later a good price), then this is worth consideration. If it is only V6 performance you want, then the VW GTI VR6 is far superior at a cheaper price, and it also has the sunroof and other misc. extras. If you want want the the family car and absolutely want the the German ride, then spend the few extra grand on the Passat - you probably will not regret it. If you don't mind a few more intolerances than the high Toyota and Honda standards, and want to save a few bucks, then have a look at the Galant, it is a few corners short of the Accord, but still a good car. If budget the priority - Sonata is the way to go, or maybe the increasingly popular - but smaller Elantra.

Strength:

Good pick-up, even with the 4-cyl
Smooth at high speeds
Stock stereo sounds good
Overall good looks, especially with spoiler and aluminum wheels
Comfortable seats - front and back
Good field of vision from driver's seat

Weakness:

Ride is a little bouncy sometimes
Tires could be a tad bit wider

Overall I'm still in love with the car and would definitely recommend it to anyone, regardless of age, gender, etc. I've know several people who have owned several different models of Honda and have yet to hear anyone say they wouldn't buy another. Good looks, good handling, and exceptional reliability at a reasonable price. This car is the reason the domestic Big 3 are losing their butts.

If you forced me to make a complaint, it would have to be the lack of a few very simple items. First, ABS should be standard at this point. I'd also like for the dome light to stay on longer, and to come on automatically when the ignition is turned off as well. The transmission can be slightly jerky sometimes, almost as though it can't decide whether or not it wants to go into overdrive. Again though, these are minor and don't detract from my overall satisfaction.

car is roomy, @90mph u dont even feel like u're going that fast, the visibility is almost great.. the trunk is a bit high for rear view, all rear view mirrors are very large giving u the best information on the environment status, average maintenance, the oil filter is a bit hard to get to.

Weakness:

the automatic gear shifting is my greatest enemy in this car. the car doesn't know when to shift down causing me use the tap the gas twice to force the computer to down shift so i can get out of the d*mn stop sign faster. the brakes are better on the '96 but i think it's due to the ABS feature. my family owns an Accord '95 LX and Nissan Altima '97. the '95 has the worse brakes i have ever felt.. the car wont even try to slow down unless u FLOOR the brake pedal.. i dont know how my mom is driving that thing. the '95 also has the same gear shifting problem and all Accords have that "THUNK" when the car shifts on the road.. the whole cabin jerks.. how big is that gear shifting mechanism anyway?.. also the steering mechanism was made by a slow ret*rd or someone with major slow reflexes.. i find myself doing more turns with the steering wheel just to move the wheels a couple of degrees..very unresponsive.. and for a big car like that.. very dangerous..

if u're like me.. want total control over your car.. then i suggest to stay away from the Accord.. i hear that the 2000+ Accords have fixed the braking problem but doubt that the shifting will be solved soon.. they need to test ride this darn family on the real road before they release it to the market!..

if u want a roomy car for your family, and dont mind paying 500$ for a broken wheel base cup on the left wheel that even the darn dealers couldnt find.. and if u dont mind using extra concentration on shifting the car urself with the D4 - D3 - 2 - 1 on your automatic then this might actually work out.. but get ABS since it will help ur braking.. which is a must.. then this is a car for you.. a tad expensive but it holds its price very fairly on the market.. due to the "reliability" stories out there..

i think i'm moving on to toyota or something else..

oh yeah.. if u're buying a car at any dealership.. make sure u listen to the one who's giving u the contract to sign for the car.. dont watch him .. listen.. when we bought this car the booger waved his hands all over and damn near distracted us from what we were signing.. they like writing stuff down for you.. showing you big numbers and saying how good their snot is.. bah.. bunch of cowturd.. test drive the car.. then go test drive a BMW or a Porshe.. then come back and test drive the same car again.. ask about everything..

one more thing.. that '96's corner turn signals dont work.. they said that the manufacturer (HONDA) took it off.. i think it's very very unsafe.. when u're switching lanes in daylight noone who's one lane over and on the same level as ur car will see u signal.. watch them try to get into ur lane as u're starting to switch over.. i caught 4+ cars doing that shn*t.. look at the distance between their tires and their lane boundary.. some *ssh*les dont even look before they change.. or signal

hope this was helpful to someone.. if u want more details or any questions u want to ask.. email me shibzik@hotmail.com be glad to give u any helpful info

later

This car has so much power for a 4cyl. this baby has 3 valves a cylinder. not to mention the lightweight(a little over 2,000lbs.)this car is by far the awesomest thing to drive. turning is too much fun. its like a go kart with plenty(PLENTY) of room to spare and a huge trunk.

Weakness:

previous owner had absolutely no respect for stick shift transmissions, clutches, body, or lets just say he tore the **** out of it.

i would recommend this car to anybody. it has been a great learning experience. i bought this cheap and there are many more. they are very easy to fix up. additions are easy. i bought this car with 5th gear burnt out, a terrible clutch, a cracked windshield, a mangled fender, smashed running light, terrible body, no original key, cut off exhaust, cd player that would no longer eject cd's, filthy interior, weak alternator, no emergency brake, no cruise control, milkshakes spilt on floor and let dry, and ahhhh yes low on tranny fluid. ADDITIONS: 2 mtx 12's, window tint, new cd, new fender, new original key, new exhaust, new windshield, i sprayed interior with Tuff stuff cleaner and watched tar drip from it, cleaned carpet with some sort of stuff made by that jewish turtle company(cleaned once and wont need it again), new ebrake, and i took the alternator out and brushed it off so it shined(it powers my 600W amp now too=). on the way: new clutch($100), new tranny(free), running light($10), new shift bushings(sloppy($20)), duraglass n plastic n putty on body(cost of supplies and my time), new paint job(jet black,$250(maaco)), and this hog will take over the roads. dispite the fading transmission, i have trouble pulling away without all the cops lookin at me, and i know how to drive a stick so dont say i'm tachin it up too high. i think the honda accord's 86-89 are excellent cars. you get crap ones from idiots that expect too much. hondas are great cars. my moms has 150k on it and has owned it since 100k and owned for 4-5 years and has replaced the distributor last week. i say thats a deal(besides gas, oil, and tires). and my 88 has great pickup i can hit 40 in about 4 secs. 25-30 in one of these small town blocks. they are easy to fix and i recommend for everybody(except people with no ambition(go buy a new one)). i've driven mine for 6 months very low on tranny fluid and no problems yet. WHEN YOU BUY HONDAS THEY DO NOT TAKE CAR OF THEMSELVES, YOU MUST TREAT THEM LIKE A PIECE OF REAL EQUIPMENT(they follow the golden rule) 5th gear could really help my 25 mpg but i'm young and can afford it.

Strength:

Sharp body style and clean interior style. All controls are ergonomically located. Strong running 4cyl engine

Weakness:

Steering too quick, continually oversteer. Minor rattle in dash. Far less gas milage than expected. Seats are not comfortable. Had much more road noise than I expected out of a high line Honda.

Base on my experience, for the money, I would not recommend this auto. While it may live up to its name for reliability, I am not impressed with the ride and drive. Needless to say, after spending over 20K for a mid-compact, I'm left feeling a little nauseous.

Weakness:

little rust around the gas tank door, and above the rear left wheel well. PGM-FI injection problem and light goes on all the time. i replaced the tires, headlights and muffler, flex pipe. etc.

Weakness:

--4 cylinder engine is weak at low rpms
--Auto transmission shifts abruptly

I purchased the vehicle primarily for the reliability and have not been disappointed. With 91,000 miles, I have only replaced a front spring. Visibility is probably the best of any car that I've ever ridden in. Controls are easy to get to and logically laid out. Acceleration is poor due to the 4 cylinder engine but the car will cruise on the highway at 80-90 mph without thinking about it. Not that I go that fast but it doesn't feel like the car is working that hard at higher speeds. Suspension is a little tight and shifting between gears seems abrupt. That's just a trait of the car, however, it doesn't reflect on the reliability.

Although you pay a couple thousand dollars more, I would purchase another Honda in a heartbeat. It has definitely been worth it.
