great car, reliable

Weakness:

lack of power, too much noise on the highway. Camry is much quieter.

It's a great car. but I do get one problem: when I stop the car, put it in park then turn the ignition key off,the car slightly lurches forward before it stops.after all, all the other stuff is great for a family car.

Model Reviewed: Honda Accord LX (Manual Transmission)

Strength:

Great pep for a 4 cylinder, very comfortable and great safety ratings.

Weakness:

Honda dealers who think that everybody should pay invoice (or above) because, dang it, they are a Honda dealer. Also, you cannot have a V6 engine with manual transmission.

1. I was reading all of the reviews about people complaining that the 4 cylinder is sluggish with an automatic transmission. Learn to drive a manual transmission! It is much more fun, you have better control over what the car is doing, you get better gas milage (2 to 3 miles per gallon which adds up), you save approximately $950 up front (the approximate cost of an automatic transmission), you gain the power to pass people quickly, and last, but not least, if you are having battery trouble (when the car gets older), you can "pop the clutch" to get the car running. I had sworn to never buy a 4 cylinder engine again but, after test driving this car, I changed my mind. With the manual, it is very peppy and somewhat sporty, as well as very comfortable.

2. Concerning the price, as with shopping for any car, you must know what the invoice price is before you get to the lot. Honda dealers are worse to deal with, in my opinion, because so many people pay them invoice or slightly below and because they know that if they don't sell you the car somebody else will buy it in the next week or so because Hondas are so popular. You can get a good price (I consider $500 over invoice to be a good price; remember that they still get the hold-back), but you may have to shop around. Every town of decent size has a Honda dealer, don't be afraid to go to another dealer! And if you are worried about the service department because you will want to use the service of a nearby dealer, don't worry. The service departments and the sales departments are two separate beasts, they will not treat your car worse because you bought it somewhere else, you are just another paying customer to them. Note that some Honda models (as of May 2000) you will have trouble finding below MSRP (S2000 and Odessy), but there are so many Accords (and Civics) out there you can find a dealer who will deal with you.

3. With regards to the radio, I'd recommend hanging onto it as, on the LX, it is a 20w x 4 Alpine stereo with a Honda nameplate (you can see this at the Alpine website (www.alpine1.com, go to FAQs)); it sounds great! I am not sure what the DX or EX use. You can buy an aftermarket Alpine CD changer and install it yourself (or buy a stereo store) and save hundreds of dollars off of the outrageous prices that Honda wants for their CD changer.

4. Concerning the floor mats and mud guards, as well as other aftermarket parts ("Honda" trunk and in-dash CD players, leather shift knobs, plastic trunk liners, gold colored "H" symbols, "bras" for the front of the car, cargo net for the trunk, etc), look in the back of Car & Driver for the names of several companies that sell at wholesale prices, they will easily beat your local Honda Dealer on prices.

5. Honda changes its styles every four years. The 1998, 1999, 2000, and 2001 models are very similar (with a few minor changes). I am writing this in May of 2000. If you are reading this a year or so from now, you might want to wait to see what the 2002 model looks like. I think the 1998 was a huge improvement over the 1997 model as the 1994 was a huge improvement over the 1993 model, maybe the 2002 model will be another big leap over the current style and size.

6. Regarding the actual handling and reliability of the car, you pretty much already know that the Honda Accord is great. This car consistently ranks in the annual Top 10 list of best cars by Car & Driver, as well as top of its class in mid size sedans (although the Mitsubishi Galant edged it out last year, not because the Accord got worse but because the Galant improved). Just learn to drive a manual transmission and the 4 cylinder engine will be just fine.

Strength:

Very VERY reliable! 14 years and still running strong! Technology in this car is ahead of its time and the little indicator that tells us which door is open is GREAT! A lot of cars today dont even have that!

Weakness:

Well, it is getting kinda old...

$17000 fully loaded 14 years ago... today it may go for a grand or so, but it still is a good car for newbies or anyone who wants a functional car that you can leave outside unlocked and wont get jacked. Or go for newer accords, they are more expensive, but believe me they are a better car than $100,000 cars on the market.

Strength:

This car is the best one I have ever owned! I love the power and punch. It offers luxury and power. The V6 engine is quiet and the VTEC throws you back in the seat! I can cruise in this car in comfort knowing that I didn't break my piggy bank.

Weakness:

Features. There are not too many advanced features, but that is okay becuase that means that there are less electrical failures.

This car is great for family or for anyone. There is substantial power and fun, along with safety. This car was reasonably priced, 25,000, and had everything I wanted. Also, there is a growing aftermarket for this car, great for the enthusists out there. Great car@!

Model Reviewed: Accord LX V6

Strength:

Good styling, bigger that the last generation Accord, great ergonomics (as is with most of Hondas products)

Weakness:

- So so acceleration from a 200hp V6, not impressed with throttle response
- Noisier cabin than I expected
- Auto trans has a mind of its own

I held off buying an Accord until they decided to put a V6 with some type of substance under the hood. Well I bit on the 98 V6, and am not all that impressed. Let me start by saying I don't regret my purchase, but I am disappointed in the performance. I ultimately don't think the problem is in the engine (although it doesn't idle as smoothly as I'd expect from a Honda). My guess is that the trans is robbing most of the low end torque and it doesn't seem to know where to shift when you ask for a little passing power. I really have to lean on the pedal when trying to pass at highway speeds.

Some of my other gripe is that there is a bit more road and wind noise than expected, not overly annoying, but not as quiet as I'd like.

Other than this, I must say the brakes feel very good, the center console storage area comes in very handy, excellent ergonomics, a good sized rear seat, and it handles relatively well.

In comparison, I like the interior of my Accord, but felt that my last generation Maxima had better performance.

Model Reviewed: 4 Door LX

Strength:

-Nice power from a 4 cyl.
-Roomy
-Headlights are great on low
-Gas mileage(35+ miles on highway @ 60mph+)

Weakness:

-Gas gauge quits at 1/2 tank and light comes on and off, which is very annoying.
-The driver's side window isn't sealed properly.

I bought it used for $2800 and 161K. Even though it has high miles, it runs like it is a brand new car. Every power option works smoothly. It has gone 75+ on the highway and has handled excellently. Handling is very predictable at all speeds. Its smaller size makes it easy to park and back out. If the gas gauge worked, the car would be excellent. The window isn't a major problem(the radio drowns it out most of the time). I would highly recommend this car. It seems like it has held up well and should in the future.

Strength:

nice interior, comfy power seating, all the package that comes with the EX trim

Weakness:

rear design - too bland, previous design are much better looking. limited color selection - it's like u really don't have a choice!! transmission - hesitation during passing!!?? and i thought v6 was suppose to be powerful and quiet....mine's not, my civic did better with acceleration sometimes..

for the price i paid i shld have just gotten the passat GLS. now i have to bring it back to the dealer for them to fix the engine noise and occasional shuddering when idle, and i thought they were suppose to be quiet and smooth. as for the power i was expecting a big difference from my previous civic but apparently there's not. i'm a little disappointed with honda's top value car. oh well, u can't always have the perfect one.

Strength:

nice look, awesome dashboard design, good gas mileage

Weakness:

please refer to my review summary below

Where should I start.
I thought this was gonna be a good buy being that people were always ranting and raving over how good it is but i'm strongly disappointed. The seats are too hard. That's fine for short distances but I drive over 60+ miles daily and it makes me not wanna drive anymore.

The A/C is failing on me already and it hasn't even been over half a year yet. I put it on full blast and it still feels hot after 10 minutes.

The maintenace required warning signal light has been flashing on for the past two weeks now which really scares me. I brought it to the dealer and they said that nothing was wrong with it. They didn't know why that was happening.

The radio reception sucks, they have this new feature where they mold the antenna onto the rear window. It keeps on fading in and out in open areas.

The acceleration is nothing to rave about, but what can you expect from a 4 cylinder family car. Maybe I would have had better luck with a 6 cylinder. The engine is noisy when accelerating at a fast pace (ie. going onto highways) but for regular street driving it's fine.

There's no ashtray!!!!! Why???? I'm not even sure if it's offered as an accesory. So for all you smokers watch out.

One major thing that bothers me is how the lights always turn off so quickly after the key is removed or the doors are unlocked. It would be better if they stayed on longer or until a door was opened.

Now on the plus side the dashboard has a nice design to it. It has the interior of a coupe but the body of a sedan. All the buttons and knobs are within easy reach and are perfectly positioned.

It also gets pretty good gas mileage. Like I said before I travel 60+ miles a day and a full tank of gas will last me a little over a week (I think that's pretty good).

The back seats are pretty comfy and have a good amount of leg room for passengers.

There's a huge amount of trunk room and I like the fact that the lock for the trunk is located inside the car. It's located where the inside lever is.

The glove compartment and the side armrest compartment are deep and can fit a lot of stuff.

The dashboard is low so it makes visibility over the hood easier, however the rear window is tiny so it's hard to determine how close you are to a car when parallel parking.

Overall I would recommend this car to a family that has a budget of around 20K. It seems to be reliable, and long-term if you can overlook minor details. If there was a higher budget, 25K-30K I would recommend the Toyota Camry.

(sorry my critique was so long =)

Strength:

Fun to drive!!! Surprising quickness. Interior is very high quality for the price that I first purchased the car at. Attractive, conservative exterior ages well. Fairly decent interior room. All buttons/guages of high quality except one (see below). Nice headlights. Very comfortable seating arrangements. High quality looking dash and seat cloth.

Weakness:

Exterior sheetmetal a little too flimsy. I have many little dings that probably wouldn't have dinged on the newer thicker sheetmetal on a 2000 accord. Engine noise is signficant above 3000 rpm. Don't appreciate this much, especially when driving long distances. Wind noise is high-for some reason driver side door window seals don't cut it. Road noise is also high. Radio kind of sucks. Antenna doesn't work very well anymore. Finally, shifts are too abrupt and not very smooth at all and the brakes stop the car, but have been fixed multiple times.

I paid 14k for the car back in 1992. It was a demo car which may explain the wierdness of it. In all, I would recommend this car to anyone who plans to buy it used. It has 145k miles on it and the engine still revs smoothly, willingly, and without any extra noises! The car still surprises people with its quickness. The exterior still looks good and not terribly outdated. This car IS for people who want reliability, high fun to drive quotient, and practicality. Not for people who want complete isolation from noise/vibration/harshness. Great for modifying and adding things on too.

Model Reviewed: Accord EX-L, V4

Strength:

Clean, angular, attractive exterior lines. Roomy interior-passengers remark that legroom in the back is generous. Leather is of high quality build and feel. Engine feels responsive and willing to rev. Very smooth shifts and downshifts even on hills. Handling is great. Better road, noise, vibration isolation than previous models. Interior buttons/guages are all of high quality. Buttons/dials are well placed, silky smooth in operation, and pleasing to the eye. Great radio pickup.

Weakness:

Needs more power out of the i4 powerplant. It is a little slow to accelerate-the v6 option is much better. Wind noise is a little too high for a car of this quality at highway speeds. Much better than previous models, but disappointingly less than say a toyota camry. Wheel gap between fender and tire is a too much. Not sure why honda likes to do that, it just makes their cars less sporty looking. Security system has too many restrictions. I've counted multiple times where I've gotten out of the car and came back, opened it with key and the alarm goes off, and I can't disable it.

We paid 200 over invoice for the car via a deal with my fiancee's company. I would wholeheartedly recommend this car. It is fun to drive, very refined, and is attractive in a conservative way. Plus, I know it will be reliable for years to come. This car IS for people who appreciate a large interior size, refinement such as perfectly fit body panels, silky smooth controls, very smooth engine (even for a 4banger), and quality interior lighting. This car IS NOT for people who expect out of the box road ripping performance or extreme luxury as found in the acura/infiniti/lexus type of cars. I would easily recommend this to a friend.
