Honda Civic (2010 and older) Midsize | Compact

Honda Civic (2010 and older) Midsize | Compact

DESCRIPTION

The Civic is Honda’s compact car that is offered in sedan and coupe versions. First introduced as a small, inexpensive hatchback in 1972, the Civic has increased in size during its lifetime while continuing to offer excellent fuel economy. The entire Civic line was all-new for 2006.

The basic Civic is available as a sedan and coupe and comes in several trims: DX, DX-VP, LX-S, EX and EX-L. The Civic SI, the performance-oriented trim, offers 57 more horsepower than the base model, a few more performance options and a starting price of around $7,000 more than the base Civic.

The Civic also comes in two eco-friendly options: the Honda Civic Hybrid, which is reviewed separately, and the GX, a hybrid alternative that runs on Compressed Natural Gas. Unfortunately the GX is only sold in California (and other states that have accepted California's Zero-Emission Vehicle regulations). It costs about $10,000 more than a base Civic.

Good Mileage, body and interior hold up great. Nice car when it runs.

Electrical problems, intermittent, problems with holding idle, stalling, ignition system totally burned up - told it was a recall items and dealer covered under manufacturers warranty, but was never notified even though I am the original owner. Now problems that the Deland Honda dealer/repair won't even try to diagnose. They say it could be one of a thousand different things making the engine keep cutting off, can't keep running. So complicated the dealer won't even TRY to figure out the problem, left me stranded 3 times for the Christmas holiday, dealer doesn't care, now trying to get help from American Honda. Info found on this site indicates could be voltage regulator, dealer says no, changing ourself anyway and trying that. Very disappointed in the level/lack of service from service dept at Deland Honda. They act like it is unreasonable to expect a Honda facility to be able to find and correct a problem with a Honda.

Strength:

Easy to find both stock and performance parts. It's kind off like like being a kid again and playing with legos. Take one part off, slap another one one. In my eyes, it's atractive and roomy (or at least it was roomy before, I put in two fostgate subs in it). Other than for the loud aftermarket "muffler," all of my neighbors like it.

Weakness:

Pritty slow, other than an engine swap, there is no real way to increase hp. Turbo/Super charger's not cost efficient (less then 50hp for more then $3000), nitrous oxide's too dangerous (especially for 1.6l soch), and other upgrades only affect the high end performance. OEM parts are WAY TOO EXPENSIVE when the trany broke after only 50K miles(the car was taken car of all the time and never raced or abused in any way), the dealer wanted close to $4500 for a rebuilt one. AAMCO fixed it for around $2500.

A very nice car that serves as a cool hoby and as transportation. I had it for about a year and a half and little by little, put in close to $5000 in upgrades. It's a second 97' civic in my family, which makes maintenance pritty easy. If you're looking for a race-car, civic's not it, but if you're going for the look, with some extra money, this is your best bet. If I would buy another one, I would go for a 2002+ Si. Although it's not as atractive as the older HB's it does have substantially more power.

Handling, reliability UNTIL 95,000

Weakness:

Dealer service (one dealer actually failed to re-attach a brake caliper after a routine inspection); electrical system and driver's side body lean (weak spring??)

A taste of things to come for high miles Honda owners? Electrical problems! At 95,000 miles, which is allegedly mid-life for a well maintained Civic, my electrical system has gone HAYWIRE! The alternator blows up batteries, apparently due to mysterious draws and shorts that seem to travel from place to place within the car with every garage and dealer I visit. I have spoken with one other owner that has experienced identical problems and frustrations with a 1997 Civic...it all starts with a check engine light, instrument panel becoming brighter and dimmer, and the speedometer reacting to engine rpm's instead of vehicle speed...such much for that fabled high mileage reliability...I've maintained the crap out of this car and don't feel American Honda has been of much help, dealers seem to crete as many (or more) problems than they resolve.

GOOD STARTER/COMMUTER CAR FOR PEOPLE THAT NEVER HAD A CAR BEFORE.GOOD PICKUP WITH THE VTEC ENGINE AT 40MPH AND HIGHER.CUTE CAR FOR PEOPLE THAT DONT HAVE ALOT OF MONEY TO SPEND BUT NEED SOMETHING RELIABLE.VERY RELIABLE & PRICE WAS GOOD TOO

Weakness:

FEELS BUMPS, AND GOES UP AND DOWN WHEN DRIVING AT HIGH SPEEDS.USES ALOT OF GAS MILEAGE/SHOULD HAVE A LARGER TANK(I AM ALWAYS FILLING IT UP EVERY 3 DAYS)DOES NOT HAVE ANY SPECIAL LUXURIES IN IT,LIKE VW.HAD TO REPLACE THE RADIO, IT SUCKS, HAS NO POWER.SPEAKERS SUCK,NO POWER.KIND OF SMALL AND PETITE. SEATS ARE UNCOMFORTABLE AT LONG TRIPS. NOT SUPPORTIVE ENOUGH, CHEAP UPHOLSTERY.LOOK LIKE A RUG

I HAD A VW JETTA FOR 1 YEAR EXACTLY, TOO EXPENSIVE TO REPAIR AND WAS ALWAYS AT THE SHOP, EVERY SINGLE MONTH, THE SERVICE ADVIORS KNEW MY NAME W/O ME TELLING THEM WHEN I CAME IN FOR REPAIRS. BROUGHT THE CIVIC 2 MONTHS AGO AND THEY SHOULD GIVE THE CIVIC MORE OPTIONS. THE ONLY REASON I BROUGHT THE CIVIC WAS B/C OF PRICE AND I HAVE AN OLDER ACCORD THAT IS STILL RUNNING WITH 80K MILES ON IT. STILL WORKS PERFECTLY. VERY RELIABLE.SHOULD HAVE VANITY LIGHTS, IN THE VISOR.I AM GOING TO TRADE IT BACK OR SELL IT AND GET AN SUV LIKE I SHOULD HAVE DONE. JUST WASTED MONEY AND TIME.

- excellent engine - 700km per tank gas mileage - nice interior

Weakness:

- soft suspension - lots of rattles

Overall a great car! The gas milage is excellent, the 1.7 VTEC powerplant is strong and reliable and the interior is roomy and refined. My only beef with the car - the suspension pretty much sucks (soft and bouncy) and I've had to fix too many annoying little rattles (neither of which I expected to experience with a Honda).

Weakness:

Second gear stickiness/crunch Driver's seat rocks fore/aft Bad rattle in passenger door Suspension too soft- back end hops over speed bumps, and other odd motions. I loved my Jetta, I like my Civic.

Always works. Lightweight, good mileage. Decent handling and ride. Kinda boring, but one knows that going in. Too bad (for me that is) that they improved the suspension the second year.

+fast +has a lot of potential +japanese technology(not stupid europe) +comfortable +hatchback BUT not TOO small +did i say FAST?

Weakness:

-not TOO fast -the vtec hits really high -Mugen products are INSANEABLY EXPENCIVE!!!!! -comes with 195/60 R15 instead of 215/45 R17

Honda is literaly a crop of knowlegde (hon+da) and civic is its fruit! I have the 1.6 VTEC and it just leaves behind everything else in the category(Golf, Focus, Toyota Corola). Silent but powerful at Vtec, energetic and superior to any other in torque and really fast!0-100 is below 10sec for sure, and the performance options are VAST!Personally i go for MUGEN(my+gen=unlimited)

Strength:

color, design, handling, leather steering wheel, stock speakers, great sound engine makes, fun to drive, good sized trunk for system or storage.

Weakness:

Not enough torque, boring interior, no ABS (in the US), turning the A/C on takes away a LOT OF POWER

Electron Blue, completely stock other than the stereo which I've added a Pioneer 6200 cd player and a sub. The stock speakers are really good but the stock headunit will not get loud enough at all. Also have a Kicker Solobaric L7. For starters, the car should not be considered a sports car. Its a normal civic which is a compact car made "quick". With an aftermarket cold air intake (AEM) you can really enhance the sound this sweet little DOHC 1.6 makes and add a little power. The car handles great, however I reccomend ditching the stock Michelin's quickly. I upgraded to 205/50 Kumho Spectra Supras which will NOT LOSE grip. This car has given me no problems and so far I am very happy with it. I travel a long distance on the highway and for somebody 6'3'' it is very comfortable as well. Did i say it was fun as hell to drive too??? Plus unlimited mods available....
