Honda Civic (2010 and older) Midsize | Compact

DESCRIPTION

The Civic is Honda’s compact car that is offered in sedan and coupe versions. First introduced as a small, inexpensive hatchback in 1972, the Civic has increased in size during its lifetime while continuing to offer excellent fuel economy. The entire Civic line was all-new for 2006.

The basic Civic is available as a sedan and coupe and comes in several trims: DX, DX-VP, LX-S, EX and EX-L. The Civic SI, the performance-oriented trim, offers 57 more horsepower than the base model, a few more performance options and a starting price of around $7,000 more than the base Civic.

The Civic also comes in two eco-friendly options: the Honda Civic Hybrid, which is reviewed separately, and the GX, a hybrid alternative that runs on Compressed Natural Gas. Unfortunately the GX is only sold in California (and other states that have accepted California's Zero-Emission Vehicle regulations). It costs about $10,000 more than a base Civic.

Strength:

Smooth ride, really quiet (with stock parts), and a lot of fun to drive.

Weakness:

Lower hp, but doesn't really make that much of a difference if you're trying to get from home to work

The Honda Civic Ex is a nice compact sized economic car. It has good mileage and is really fun to drive around in. If you're looking for powerful car though, I wouldn't recommend this car. It only comes stock with 127 hp if you have the v-tec (EX) version.

Strength:

Great alignment, Kick ass gas mileage, smooth ride, quiet ride, great turning, great acceleration(even for a lower model), overall great car! :)

Weakness:

There is a weird high pitched sqeaking noise when first turned on in the morning we have taken it in but everything is fine.

Overall, I really enjoy driving this car. It used to be my moms and i got it a few months ago with only 61,000 miles on it. Works like a charm. Smooth ride, great for long trips. It isn't the best in city traffic because it is manual shift, but what manual shift is easy in city driving?

Strength:

Efficient powerplant Roomy interior Very nice looks (Inca pearl + skirt kit)

Weakness:

Very bad suspension Interior moldings rattle

I aquired my car in january 2002. It is fully loaded including the skirt kit and spoiler. The color, inca pearl, is a real head turner. Body panels are very precisely assembled. I did already 50000 km on it and i had more problems than i could expect from a Honda. The front shocks were finished and had to be replaced at 25000 km. The road handling is getting worse again and I will have to replace them a second time soon. Rear suspension is way too smooth also. Considering installing quality performance suspension.... My roof interior panel was rattling too. I had to completely unclip it and install two sided sticking foam tape in between. Same problem with the rear panel near the center brake light. Very annoying. Disapointed also that there is no keyless trunk and that the drivers seat doesnt retract automatically. My dealer also gave me troubles. He installed a repainted front skirt that was chipping bad after few weeks. It was pretending normal wear. I had lots of red chips on my inca pearl paint, very nice... Ordering another costed me 500$ cdn, i am trying right now to get my money back... Except that all the rest runs fine The 127hp 1.7L VTEC is decent, period. No performance pretentions. I still like that car a lot and i hope i dont get more problems. I bought a Honda because of superior technology and finish but i am a bit disapointed.

Strength:

The best strength that the honda definately has to be its curving. Turning corners has never been easier. It completely grips and you don't need to hold down the brake - just go !!!!!

Weakness:

I am hearing this clicking noise coming from the vent on the driver side. Don't know what it is, but when I accelerate it gets louder and faster, and especially over little bumps. Kind of gets annoying. Guys at dealerships say that I have to let the car warm up, but the noise is not coming from the engine. It is internal.

I love this car. I've got the 4 door sports edition. It's fully loaded inside, with CD and A/C and fully loaded outside with full skirts, summer and winter rims and spolier and front skirt.

Strength:

Roomy Interior, nice exterior (My car is black and I have only one chip in paint) Great Gas Mileage (I get around 32mgp) Very Reliable! (Great family car!)

Weakness:

A/C is the only Mechanical complaint I have. I wish the LX came with Alloys. I found a set of 98 civic alloys on ebay. Really added a nice touch to the car.

My 4 door Honda Civic LX has been a great little car thus far. I currently have 15,000 mi on it, and have had only one complaint. The A/C is not very good. Other than that, this car has been perfect. I've been reading some of the complaints that people have had with this car, and feel that they obviously did really do there home work. This is an economy car. Louder engine, bumpier ride are charteristics of all cars in this class. When compared to other cars in its class it is by far superior.

Model Reviewed: Civic EX

Strength:

Gas mileage (35-38mpg), stereo/CD player sounds good for stock system, lots of aftermarket stuff available, extremely reliable and I really enjoy driving it!

Weakness:

Lack of power with A/C on, cup holders (solution: lay a roll of duct tape on the passenger's side floor to use as cupholder and put change, etc in stock cupholders), no shoulder seat belt height adjustment (I'm short so I'm always pulling it down because it feels like it's cutting my neck), keyless entery doesn't include a trunk "popper".

I love this car so far. I shopped around a lot (many months) for a Civic. I knew I wanted a 2-door EX w/ a manual transmission, either a '98 or '99 and was really having trouble finding one that was in great shape and a somewhat good deal (at or below book). Either they had been in accidents, salvaged, flood damaged or were totally beat on, etc. I happened to find this car on a whim and the moment I saw it, I knew it was the one for me. It just put out a great "vibe" and the deal was sealed as soon as I drove it. There were some other interested parties at the dealership who came in after me and were waiting to see if I was actually going to get it, and if not, they were ready to pounce on it. (These cars are pretty hard to come by in a 2-door manual transmission, especially in Northern MN!) I am interested to see how this will handle MN winter driving conditions. I had a '89 Accord (sucked in snow) and an "88 Prelude w/ 4 wheel steering (awesome handling in winter, especially w/ Blizzaks!) and am curious to see how it'll do.

Strength:

All the well-known Honda strong points

Weakness:

A/C. Just embarrassingly weak, and the reason I gave 3 stars instead of 5. There's no excuse for this in a year 2002 auto.

Shopped around quite a bit and checked invoice info before buying, which saved me about #2,000 off the sticker price. I got the EX loaded model, and am almost entirely content. Except: Air conditioning. Weak, un-cold, anemic, pathetically ineffective A/C, the kind I imagine a 1981 Yugo might have had. My previous cars (VW, Chevy, and Saturn) all were cooling off in seconds; my Civic takes five minutes or more to bring the cabin down to a liveable temperature. I at first assumed there was a coolant leak, but the warranty service made no difference, and on my second visit the salesman (and, later, the new sales manager) admitted to me that A/C is a weak point in Hondas. In the Deep South this is a minor but exceedingly irritating drawback every single time I go to drive somewhere. Several other Honda owners in my Army unit here have noticed the same A/C problem with their cars. Apart from this, I have no complaints, but if you hate to sweat and live where it gets hot, this car may not be for you...

Strength:

Very reliable. Runs great. Great gas mileage. Comfortable ride. Quiet ride.

Weakness:

Not for someone who wants/needs a lot of room.

Purchased a 1988 Honda Civic (mint condition) in November 2000 with 33k miles on it. The car has been a dream. No problems at all. Now have 67k miles on it. Excellent gas mileage. I get about 36 miles per gallon on the highway. My 2 year old daughter will probably drive this car someday. Thanks Honda!!! Money well spent.
