Honda Civic (2010 and older) Midsize | Compact

Honda Civic (2010 and older) Midsize | Compact

DESCRIPTION

The Civic is Honda’s compact car that is offered in sedan and coupe versions. First introduced as a small, inexpensive hatchback in 1972, the Civic has increased in size during its lifetime while continuing to offer excellent fuel economy. The entire Civic line was all-new for 2006.

The basic Civic is available as a sedan and coupe and comes in several trims: DX, DX-VP, LX-S, EX and EX-L. The Civic SI, the performance-oriented trim, offers 57 more horsepower than the base model, a few more performance options and a starting price of around $7,000 more than the base Civic.

The Civic also comes in two eco-friendly options: the Honda Civic Hybrid, which is reviewed separately, and the GX, a hybrid alternative that runs on Compressed Natural Gas. Unfortunately the GX is only sold in California (and other states that have accepted California's Zero-Emission Vehicle regulations). It costs about $10,000 more than a base Civic.

Strength:

Highly customizable, great stock look even though my civic looks nothing like stock now, gas milage, variety of different models to suit different ages/personal style, the list goes on!

Weakness:

Really there are no weaknesses to this car, however, I do wish I would have gotten the 99 Civic SI instead of the 99 Civic EX just to get the extra boost of power.

I bought this car back in January 2002. I love it! If your are into the import scene then this is the car for you. Its like the NOKIA of cars. There is an overabundance of mods you can do to this car. Its an extremely reliable car thus far and gets great gas milage! Highly recommend

Strength:

Fuel economy, reliability, road handling. An overall very good buy for this class of car

Weakness:

Stock tires noisey, interior noise a little high due to tires. If possible replace stock tires with better quality tires.

A very good car in it's class. Engine and transmission are smooth and so far flawless on my car, power is quite good considering the car class. Ride is a little stiff, the road handling is excellent despite the mediocre stock firestone tires. My a/c works very well even on the hottest days. Interior finish and trim is also very good. Reliability to date is excellent unlike my VW jetta GTX which had many problems from day 1. My driver door needed a very minor adjustment, it was not aligned perfectly (I am very demanding). At 15000km had no other problems at all! (Price paid includes sales taxes)

Strength:

Great running, great mpg. I have over 200,000 miles on it and it sounds just like it did the day I bought it. The shifting is smooth and has great passing power. Great driving in the city and for long distances. The back seat is roomy for a compact. When I get out of grad school and get some real money, I see a silver civic in my future!

Weakness:

I switched out the am/fm cassette to a cd player w/ new speakers and that has made a great improvement! Other wise, my major complaint is that I need cup holders! It can be a little tricky to find service in smaller towns but I have been lucky and not ever needed to really fix it.

I love this little car! It gets the greatest gas mileage (35-40 city/40-46 hwy). I have put over 70,000 miles on it in the 3 yrs I've had it and it runs terrific. The engine sounds great, it has great pickup and I have had very few problems with it, even at 200,000 miles. All I do is change the oil and I did switch over the A/C to the less toxic variety (older car - what can I say?)

Good acceleration, small and perfect in heavy traffic. Great AC, low-maintenance engine, though a little underpowered.

Weakness:

Suspension needs to be checked often, and tires rotated often. Not very many weaknesses.

My brother bought this car, and I test-drove this car. Amazing car! Runs circles around other cars. Though, I wouldn't recommend this car for racing. This is a car that you take care of and it lasts 300,000 miles or more. For a compact car, it has a lot of room. Quick acceleration and good handling at highway speeds.

Strength:

Engine, gearbox, subtle styling cues, double wishbone suspension, features such as: ABS, heated mirrors, sunroof, cruise control, leather-wrapped steering wheel, split 60/40 fold-down rear seats, roomy rear seats for 2--all practical and useful while still being a sporty compact.

Weakness:

Interior: stereo, Fisher Price-itis, interior colour scheme, vibration in the glovebox sometimes Other: Mediocre all-season tires, lack of security/anti-theft system, paint tends to accentuate scratches rather than hide them, low-end torque (but that's ok, we can't have everything at this price range!)

2000 Civic SiR (same as US Si but with ABS and heated mirrors). I've had this car almost 2 years. Great car for the price. I test drove the 2002 Si(R) and while the gearbox is smooth, the car is still not nearly as fun as the 1999-2000; I think for two main reasons: 1) the double wishbone suspension in the '99-'00 and 2) the 8000rpm redline. Yes, the 2002s have more torque and are smoother but are 200 lbs heavier and aren't as fun because of the low redline and lack of a clear crossover point for VTEC; i-VTEC may be better but not as fun. Since we aren't race car drivers and there is only a marginal difference in acceleration between the two models, you want to hear the nice engine and have the most fun, right? The interior of this car is a bit weak compared to the newer Focus and '02 Si hatch, Sentra SE-R, etc. The seats have a strange pattern to them, the steering wheel is a bit thin and the climate control dials and orange glow of the gauges remind me of Fisher Price. The stock stereo is weak and has to be really turned up to hear the radio especially when you are on the highway, although it is a bit better with CDs. Also, the stock Michelin XGT V4 195/55 15R tires are poor in inclement weather. They are all seasons, but in the Pacific Northwest area, it rains a lot and these tires were bad from the get-go in rain (eg. you have to make a hill start at a light in rain...you rev much more than 2000rpm when you're starting off, and you're guaranteed wheelspin) And on the rare occasions when it snowed, they were awful. But, at the time I bought it, the 2000 SiR was really the best and only car in its class. I still like the styling better than the 2002 hatch, and I hate the rear of the Sentra, but I like the Focus SVT and Mazda MP3 as well. If you get a '99 or '00 model, it's a great car, but beware of all the once modified cars out there. I've driven this car only 8280 miles in 2 years and have had absolutely no problems. One other thing. It's an easy target for thieves or vandals so beware. I would recommend at least an alarm with back-up siren and a separate 3-pt immobilizer. Unfortunately, this car comes from Honda with no security features. By the way, someone had problems with the ABS on the '02, but it works fine on the '00.

Strength:

Super refined engine and tranmission that are perfect, tight cabin feel, controls feel good

Weakness:

badly engineered air conditioning thats inconsistent and weak, ride noise and quality

Although my civic is still brand new, im slightly upset with the overall feel of the car. It is, overall, a very "marginal" car, and nothing really works excellent, just adequately. For instance, power is just enough, a/c is borderline poor, and ride quality is marginal. For some reason, I cant find anything about the civic that really shouts out excellence. Sure, fit and finish wipe away any american car and material quality is par none, but everything else remains vague. Anyways, the civic offers plenty of power for scooting around and seems fine in my opinion. Handling is fine also, not to sloppy and not incredibly crisp, just right. The stock stereo in the car works pretty nicely, but after awhile of listening, seems to sound tinny. The civic rides nicely, but jolts around a bit and there is too much road noise that permeates the cabin. Air conditioning really needs to be redesigned, and is probably the worst of any car Ive owned. The temperature swings back and forth constantly and violently(a good 15 degrees or so), resulting in a cabin that never really cools down when hot. Honda evaluated it and states that its normal. Overall quality is superb. Honda definitely shows attention to detail, but really needs to focus engineering certain comfort details better. Honda seems to spend 90% of their time in engines and driveline stuff, but next to nothing on comfort items.

Model Reviewed: Civic Si

Strength:

1) Great Gas Milage 2) Great engine performance (ie. 100 hp/liter; 1.6-L DOHC VTEC) 3) Great handling for a OEM/stock setup. 4) Wide Range of aftermarket parts for upgrades. 5) EPB color.

Weakness:

1) OEM tires are just worthless! 2) Could use alittle more power in the torque end. 3) Clutch could use a little more clamp load.

From the frist day I got this car, I have been very pleased with its performance and quality. It yields great Miles/Gallon on gas, while allowing the driver to enjoy the DOHC VTEC. The color. Electronic Purple-Blue color is a great color. Regardless of where I go, I always turn heads. In the meantime, I turn and look at other Civic Si 99-00 as well. For more detail, just email me. If you would like to ask about the AFTERMARKET questions for this car, please email me as well. Thanks
