Honda Civic (2010 and older) Midsize | Compact

DESCRIPTION

The Civic is Honda’s compact car that is offered in sedan and coupe versions. First introduced as a small, inexpensive hatchback in 1972, the Civic has increased in size during its lifetime while continuing to offer excellent fuel economy. The entire Civic line was all-new for 2006.

The basic Civic is available as a sedan and coupe and comes in several trims: DX, DX-VP, LX-S, EX and EX-L. The Civic SI, the performance-oriented trim, offers 57 more horsepower than the base model, a few more performance options and a starting price of around $7,000 more than the base Civic.

The Civic also comes in two eco-friendly options: the Honda Civic Hybrid, which is reviewed separately, and the GX, a hybrid alternative that runs on Compressed Natural Gas. Unfortunately the GX is only sold in California (and other states that have accepted California's Zero-Emission Vehicle regulations). It costs about $10,000 more than a base Civic.

Great reliability, gas milage, quality.

Little lack of power.

Not once have I had a problem since I purchased this car used. Regular service and thats it. It will probably last as long as my old 1987 Civic.

Strength:

Nice, reliable car. Comfortable back seat, even for a coupe. Smooth (a little too toylike a shifter, though) manual tranny, surprisingly decent factory sound system

Weakness:

Terrible terrible paint job!!!!! You have to hand wash it because an automatic car wash will literally destroy the paint. If you even look at it funny, it will scratch, rust, or dent. Honda uses a special "wet coat" system whereby they don't let the damn thing dry before coating it again!!! Yes, it's fast, but it looks like crap. Otherwise, it's underpowered, but I didn't buy a 1.6L DX for power.

I leased this car for the duration of my last 2 years of college. I don't think I'm going to buy it at the end of the lease, but it's been a really great, reliable car. The service I got at Hugh White was absolutely amazing. I do, however, think it's a huge scam, the 7500 mile check up intervals. At 7,500, 15,0000, etc, they want you to come in so they can charge you $125 for stuff you can do yourself in about an hour. The only thing you can't do is put the little darn key into the "maintainence required" light.....Honestly, $125 to change the oil, rotate the tires, and check the fluids that I know are ok???

Everything! Rides quite, over all nice, looks brand new 4 years later. Great gas mileage. Could go on and on. Great value for the price.

Weakness:

I have had this vehicle for 4 years my first brand new car and I have never had any problems! Not one! It gets terrific gas mileage and is extremely sturdy. Very cute car as well. I have to sell because of baby on the way and need four doors and I hate doing it in fear of having problems with any other type of car.

Strength:

Value-costs a bit more new, but a lot less depreciation. Solid feel, excellent 5-spd, usable rear seat, great guages, excellent ergonomics, firm and comfortable seats. Excellent handling and steering. Very good fuel mileage. Great visibility, with few blind spots. Fit an finish are excellent. Decent ride/handling tradoff.

Weakness:

Cheapo 14 inch tires. Road noise on the freeway. No ABS except on the EX. Uncharacteristic (for Honda) harsh engine noise at full throttle. Power windows make too much noise going down.

Okay, Okay, I finally bought a Japanese car after many years of American. I got a really cheap lease on the Civic LX($180/mo w/1200 total down), so I figured--Why not? I had gotten almost ill at how Honda owners gush over thier cars, so I wanted to see for myself. Overall, it is very well built car. It is fun to drive. I am tall and it has lots of headroom (no sunroof, which takes 2" of headroom). The car is surprisingly large inside. All the controls are perfectly positioned. Honda builds the best manual trans. Shifts are short and accurate. Don''t even have to think about it. Excellent fuel MPG. I get 32 in mixed driving. Feels solid for a small car. Very quiet idle. More legroom front and rear than anything else in it''s class that I looked at. The main reason I decided on the Honda is that they hold their value. I looked at 3 year old Honda civics in the classifieds, and they bring more $$ than any other car in its class. I am undecided if I will buy the car at the end of the lease. Areas for improvement: tires. The stock 195/70/14 firestones just suck. Too much road noise on the highway. Engine is fairly noisy under hard acceleration--which was a Honda strength in the past. Honda went to a lower RPM engine with a longer stroke. Result: better low end torque, but harsher at high RPM. Also, no ABS available on the LX model I bought. You have to get the EX (but it has a sunroof, and I am too tall for that). Also, the LX comes with a casette and no CD standard. Come on Honda--a casette in 2002? No power lock switch on the front passenger door. Car is pretty average on insurance cost for cars of this type. Pleasant looking dash/guages. Excellent visibility.

Strength:

Cost, a great package for the money, efficiency, reliability, and the Honda name

Weakness:

No light in trunk.

This is my second Honda. My first was a used 88 Accord, which gave me 9 years of great driving and reliability. My 99 Civic VP (keyless entry, factory-installed CD, and air)has all that I need. It starts right up and goes. It''s not a "race car," nor does Honda claim it to be so. But I am finding myself well over the speed limit without realizing it too many times. The car was created for reliability and efficiency. If you''re looking for a speedy race car, Honda has the 2000.

Model Reviewed: Honda Civic EX Coupe

Strength:

- attractive (but safe) styling - reliable - functional interior controls (some say it''s bland) - practical - safe car choice for long-term buyers

Weakness:

- sometimes unsmooth auto transmission - weak engine (especially considering it''s the top trim level) - noisy acceleration - you can get a more powerful and feature-laden car for the same price (or less)

My Civic is the first NEW car that I''ve ever gotten. I opted for this car because of the styling and for Honda''s trademark reliability. The price is definitely not the most attractive selling point to this car (you can get other comparable cars for less), but I particularly liked this car''s looks and proveness. Getting the redesigned 2001 model was a risk, however. Now that I have had the car for over six months, I can honestly say that I am satisfied, but the car is definitely far from perfect. Reading through some of the other reviews on this site validated some of the potential problems/annoyances. It''s not JUST me! For example, the automatic transmission is not very smooth when you slow down, then speed up again. There is a sometimes subtle, sometimes obvious jerk when you do this. This is commonly experienced when going through a turn. Also, someone mentioned in their review that there is an audible noise from the suspension when turning out of reverse. I too have experienced this. As far as the gas mileage, it''s decent, but not as great as I would expect from a car like the Civic. As far as power goes, the car can use some more horses under the hood. Comparable cars from other automakers have bigger engines, something Honda sort of addresses with the Si model, but should be available with the more standard 2DR and 4DR. Upon initial acceleration, the engine buzz does permeate a bit much into the passenger cabin, but the ride is pretty smooth and quiet otherwise. Highway and normal city driving is pleasant. OVERALL, the Civic is a good car, but not a great car. If it holds true to Honda form, it should be a good investment and last for at least a decade. After over six months of ownership, I have had no problems as far as reliability. I would recommend it for someone who is looking to make a safe choice for the long-term. BUT, if you are looking for a more fun car with more power, etc., then you may want to look elsewhere.

Strength:

Weakness:

Terrrible assembly quality from the Alliston Ontario plant Bad parts quality

This car has been crap since I picked it up from the dealer in the fall of 2000. The service at Honda has been a struggle as well. At first the hood didn''t line up with the fenders and the driver rear door was hanging off the body. They adjusted the door and hood (the first dealer said the hood couldn''t be adjusted). The hood sort of lines up now, but it rattles intermittantly. Wind noise is terrible in this car. My mother also bought a 2000 Civic and she has the same wind noise. Strange that no reviews point this out. They''ve replaced window gaskets and it''s no better. The window regulator needed replacement because it made a crunching noise. The technicians didn''t line up the window crank properly when they re-installed it so it points in the wrong direction when the window''s up. The speedo fluttered and stuck when the car was brand new. It took Honda months to bring one into stock, so by the time they replaced it, it was 16,000 km out. Now the car is de-valued because the odometer went back to zero. Whatever you do don''t have them ever change a speedo, even if it doesn''t work. The idle is intermittantly rough. I needed a two way valve and sensor replaced in the fuel system when the light came on in the dash. The dealer says this is from overfilling. I come from an auto service background, and I don''t overfill my vehicle. When I picked up the car, another guy was there on his 3rd set! Hmmm... Now the car has 60Km on it and the rear main seal and oil pan gasket are blown and the thing leaks oil. The front brakes are down to 30% and all I do is highway driving. I get on the highway in the morning and hit the brakes maybe 3 times before I get off. I believe the brakes wear just by friction against the rotors as you drive this car. I don''t drive this car hard. The Honda dealers don''t want to honour the "nation wide" warranty, it''s always a battle for them to fix stuff under warranty when it''s not from the dealer I bought it from. We also have a 1998 Civic si that''s much better, but it''s hood also rattles intermittantly. I should''ve bought the Toyota Corolla. Feel free to contact me at Greg_evans@Canada.com.

At 37,000 Miles and no major problems. That''s great in itself. roomy rear seating even enough for your 6 ft. friends. Good gas milage. Quick above 6000RPM. Handling

Weakness:

Comfort.

I have enjoyed this car for the time I''ve had it. Its quick but needs more horsepower and comfort. Handling is great. But braking could be better. The seats could be a little less stiff but that seems apparent in all hondas. This was my first new car and a popular one at that. Ready to move on to something a little more comfortable and faster. Maby a WRX or Evo IIV. We will see.

-Gas milage is awesome(it is a four bandger though -Fits well for four people considering it is compact -Great car to own for first car

Weakness:

-Front wheel driving, i perfer back -Expencive to repair -dealerships are worst then GM -Eats coolent up, leaks coolent, needs a radiator system every 3000 miles...or is it just my car -Batteries seem to go out easy on this and other honda related cars -Deffinatley easy to break into and steal, mine has four times. -window system is slow -Altinator is really weak, relpace if you want a really good sound system

What can i truelly say about this car. I am a great fan of Gm products and always sticked that way. My girlfriend otherwise persauded me that Hondas are more reliable then GM, some true and sume not so true. I got my civic with 110k to it.It now has 150 k and the more i drive it, the more money i put out to fix it. Don''t get me wrong, most Gm products die after 130k but the parts for Gm cars are soooo much cheaper to get then Imports. Great on gas and to some it is a looker, mostly because there are so many aftermarket products out there to make it faster and presentable. I was though very dissapointed in the fact that the dealer charged an arm and a leg to fix it and it about to cost me a decent amount to fix it then what i payed for it. Great on starting but it now lacks power, overheats, and rattles like no other. At least the Paint is simi-good , does not chip away like most gm products but from all the good talk on how great honda''s are, where is this all coming from. Now if i told you that this is the only Honda that i drive, your very very wrong. I travel alot so i rent, borrow, and or get many cars and some how or another, all of the hondas i drive are the same, low four banging power that is liable, in fact mopst cars out there today have V6 or higher. Don''t get me wrong, Honda''s are welll constructed, as far as i can see, no transimtion problems or motor going out but i don''t see the real big difference otherwise.
