Honda Civic (2010 and older) Midsize | Compact

DESCRIPTION

The Civic is Honda’s compact car that is offered in sedan and coupe versions. First introduced as a small, inexpensive hatchback in 1972, the Civic has increased in size during its lifetime while continuing to offer excellent fuel economy. The entire Civic line was all-new for 2006.

The basic Civic is available as a sedan and coupe and comes in several trims: DX, DX-VP, LX-S, EX and EX-L. The Civic SI, the performance-oriented trim, offers 57 more horsepower than the base model, a few more performance options and a starting price of around $7,000 more than the base Civic.

The Civic also comes in two eco-friendly options: the Honda Civic Hybrid, which is reviewed separately, and the GX, a hybrid alternative that runs on Compressed Natural Gas. Unfortunately the GX is only sold in California (and other states that have accepted California's Zero-Emission Vehicle regulations). It costs about $10,000 more than a base Civic.

Strength:

5 speed is peppy, countless aftermarket mods available, reliable, easy to upgrade sound system, and gets good gas mileage.

Weakness:

It will not let you forget that it''s a small car. More than 2 passengers will make it feel sluggish and there is not much room for cargo(except hatchback models), engine has little torque, the car shakes severely on bumpy roads, seems like everyone already has one, and vulnerability in an accident.

Simply put, Civics are reliable cars that if treated properly, have the potential to last forever. Of course now they are everywhere because of the tremendous amount of aftermarket products available. It seems like everywhere I drive there is a civic around me, so much for individuality. If you want to put mods on a Civic and make it fast you will need a 5 speed tranny. Gas mileage is great all around, however this is not a car to pile your family or friends in. Passengers weigh it down severely. The best thing I can say about Civics is that you can get one for pretty cheap and there is no limit to what can be customized on it. My main gripe is that I don''t really like small cars, I would prefer an Accord over a Civic.

Strength:

To be a four-cylinder compact car it has tremendous power. I have done a few modifications of course, but, when it was stock I made great 1/4 mile time in it.

Weakness:

I have had to replace the pistons and bore the head because of NOS. Which, was not really because the pistons were weak, but an error in the nitrous system. The one complaint I do have is that everytime it rains my passenger floor board is soaked.

Overall, I love my civic. I bought it to drive back and forth to college because of the great gas milage. I got a good deal on it also. When purchased it had 74k miles. We haven''t hit 100k but we are looking forward to it.

Strength:

-GOOD PERFORMANCE FOR A LOW COST -GETS MUCH ATTENTION AND COMPLIMENTS (ESPECIALLY AT THE MCDONALDS DRIVE THRU) -CAR IS QUICKER THAN MOST THINK, BUT NOT WITH THE AUTO- 0-60 IN THE LOW 7''S IS RESPECTABLE FOR A BARGAIN CAR -MANY AFTERMARKET PARTS FOR INCREASED PERFORMANCE

Weakness:

-NOT THE BEST QUALITY- TEND TO RATTLE AND SQUEAK SOMETIMES -FIRST GEAR ACCELERATION ISN''T TO IMPRESSIVE UNLESS YOU REALLY GET ON IT (I RECOMMEND 3.73 GEARS) -I''M NOT VERY IMPRESSED BY HIGH SPEED PERFORMANCE...SOME CARS TEND TO ACCELERATE MORE QUICKLY ON THE HIGHWAY WITH LESS HORSEPOWER (MY STANG ONLY HAS A 5,250 REDLINE SO THAT MAY BE A FACTOR) -NO SUNROOF -5 SPEED SEEMS A LITTLE CHOPPY- REVERSE IS HARD TO FIND -HORSEPOWER NEEDS TO BE AROUND 210-220 FOR THE NEW MODEL TO GET MORE RESPECT- OR I COULD SPEND $3,500 ON A TURBO AND DO 12 SEC QUARTERS

THIS CAR IS A GREAT PERFORMER FOR A LOW COST. BUT I THINK THE 190 HP 3.8 V6 IS STILL UNDERPOWERED. I THINK IT HAS MUCH MORE POTENTIAL, ESPECIALLY FOR HAVING 232 CUBIC INCHES COMPARED TO THE GT''S 281. HOWEVER, IT''S GREAT FUN TO DRIVE AROUND TOWN WITH THE 5-SPEED NOT TO MENTION THE LOOKS IT GETS WITH THE ELECTRIC GREEN PAINT JOB

Strength:

Good assembly; no rattles; very quiet at idle (if that makes a difference to you), good gas mileage.

Weakness:

Too noisy at freeway speed, expensive for what fun it brings to driving, bad tires, abs is an option on some models, thin metal (and paint job), doesn''t track well on the highway, feels like a real economy car. Transmission sucks.

I bought a 2001 civic ex sedan (auto), and ended up selling it after 7 months. Why? Too noisy on the freeway. Lousy tires hydroplaned like crazy in typical seattle rain. Engine sounds like it''s screaming for mercy each time you poke the gas pedal. It doesn''t track as steadily as it should. Feels like it''s made of really thin steel. Transmission (auto) won''t hold a gear through a turn; and will hesitate when accelerating out of one. In short its not a fun to drive car. It gets good mileage and is rattle-free though. I ended up selling it at 4300 miles and getting a vw gti instead. Now THAT car is light-years better when compared to the civic. More expensive, but definitely worth it. I don''t feel beat-up at all after driving that car. Please take the time to test-drive one for an extended period, rather than purchase one based on reputation alone. You''ll feel better knowing you made the correct choice. You only live once.

Strength:

as said for the lx good power, roomy the four door feels like a limo. 17sec/79mph on the quarter mile. Fun little racing car.

Weakness:

i have a few weakness on the car first my driver door window track is broken, *probably from all the breakins before i bought the car and after, busted in once*. Now the car whistles at high speeds. The dealership never gave me any info on the history of the car. The front fender and back wheel well have been rebuilt, on the drivers side i can only put a fist between the wheel and the well, on pasenger side i can easily stick two fists between wheel and well. trunk warning light is keept on some times after opening trunk.* but it goes away after hitting a pothole. its the same way with the console lights they flicker like a xmas tree at night. yes the comfort of the seat suck, the cup holder too, the back seat when collapsed it is not flat, top coat flakes off dramasticaly, paint as well. *srs* light turns on frequently when in a dip or pot hole. scares the living crap out of me!

well i got this car in september of 2001. I really like the car, when i bought it it had 160k now up to 192k. It chugs a pint of oil a week but still goes on strong. for an lx it has good power, kept in high rpm''s, i replaced my stock intake for a K&N just noticable power great sound. Im happy!

Strength:

Cost, fuel economy, quality of fit and finish, looks, stereo sound, quality of ride, never needs a wheel alignment, large trunk.

Weakness:

Weak A/C and heater, "A/C on" light can''t be seen on bright days, cup holders aren''t deep enough (drinks fall out), poor winter handling without snow tires, ABS brakes disengage in deep snow, cassette deck sold in a 21st century car.

My Honda Civic SE coupe (CDN version) is a nice little package for the money. It''s a base DX with a few nicities thrown in: ABS brakes, power locks, arm rest, A/C and AM/FM/Cassette. This car gets excellent gas mileage and hasn''t cost me a dime other than regular oil changes and tune-ups. In driving, it''s decently "peppy" (meaning, no spinning tires on take off) but it screams like a demon while it''s doing it. There''s some road noise, but long distance cruising is surprisingly carefree and painless.

Strength:

More space. Honda eliminated the hump in the back. The cup holders are huge. Easy control panel for heat/air etc. Great car seat compatibility with 3 points to secure. Nice gas mileage 600 km on highway. Lots of trunk space. Over all larger than its Toyota Corolla comparison. Oil changes only twice a year.

Weakness:

Stereo is quiet. Struts leaking and Honda will replace but in the meantime I have to put up with the clicking noise and impaired suspension. Dirty, but thats my fault. Needs back seat head rests.

I have been driving my 2001 Civic for 9.5 months. Its a great car, not bad for mileage if I would ease up on the gas and not bad for power even if it is only a 4 cylinder (just leave it in 2nd gear a bit longer).

Strength:

Sleek styling Economical driver-friendly build quality

Weakness:

soft cushions in seats lack of ABS in LX Noise at higher speeds

I have been using this car for 3 months and I love it. I used to drive a 2000 sentra (automatic) and the build quality, performance and gas mileage seems to be much better. Not to mention smoother ride. The car''s still only 3 months old, so no problems at all. Seems like my car''s "broken in" and is more responsive though. Strengths are its build quality considering its a low end car. Corrola''s and Sentra''s have a more economy car feel while the civic seems more refined. I like the engine for its broad usable torque range... though 10-20 hp would''ve been better. Nevertheless, it passes cars when it needs to. Don''t expect a sports car from a Civic... afterall, it is an economy car. Weaknesses are very minor. The seats get a little uncomfortable in long drives (2+ hours) because the cushion''s a little too soft. On rough roads and freeways that aren''t newly paved there''s a good amount of road noise, however nothing unexpected coming from an economy car. Because my car''s an LX, it doesn''t come equipped with ABS... and there''s a lot of times I wished that it did. Slamming on the brakes locks the wheels very easily, not inspiring much confidence. But drive safely and normally, and nothing unpredictable happens. I love the looks of the car too. The ergnomics of the interior is very nice, all the buttons and switches are in perfect places. The cupholder, which a lot of times is useless for larger cups, is very usable, and concealed within the center console. Nice touch.

Weakness:

engine noise at high speeds (140 km/h) (do the conversion for miles) wind noise at same speeds annoyiing squeaks from the doors and sunroof when riding in a less than smooth road. lack of power

this is a great car once you understand what it was meant for. really confortable interior, nice looks inside also. more than enough room for 4 passengers. the only problem i''ve had so far is the noise at high speeds and when driving through bumpy roads. it is a VERY confortable car to drive in the city, excellent response (manual transmission). you will be surprised at the speeds you can maintain in a very long climb in the highway, you will pass almost just EVERYBODY ! this is a must have for anyone looking for a nice, confortable and dependable vehicle. altough you can go very fast with the civic, it only delivers that speed at 5000 + rpm and in fifth gear and you feel like you are pushing the limits of the car. I drove my dad''s renault megane (140 hp) in the same road and... what a difference! the car hardly notices the climbs. the megane is not as good looking or confortable though.
