Honda Civic (2010 and older) Midsize | Compact

Honda Civic (2010 and older) Midsize | Compact

DESCRIPTION

The Civic is Honda’s compact car that is offered in sedan and coupe versions. First introduced as a small, inexpensive hatchback in 1972, the Civic has increased in size during its lifetime while continuing to offer excellent fuel economy. The entire Civic line was all-new for 2006.

The basic Civic is available as a sedan and coupe and comes in several trims: DX, DX-VP, LX-S, EX and EX-L. The Civic SI, the performance-oriented trim, offers 57 more horsepower than the base model, a few more performance options and a starting price of around $7,000 more than the base Civic.

The Civic also comes in two eco-friendly options: the Honda Civic Hybrid, which is reviewed separately, and the GX, a hybrid alternative that runs on Compressed Natural Gas. Unfortunately the GX is only sold in California (and other states that have accepted California's Zero-Emission Vehicle regulations). It costs about $10,000 more than a base Civic.

Strength:

Price, smooth ride, decent pick up, RELIABLE, price maintians itself well, buying a used car I got it certified pre-owned and got a 100,000 mile warranty for only $15 a month, good gas mileage and more.

Weakness:

Nothing other than not as good of a stereo as my Neon, but still a good stereo.

Let's not complain here folks!!! Why are these people complaining? I went from a '97 Dodge Neon with 70,000 well maintained miles that all at once had problems from a blown head gasket, bad #1 O2 sensor, bad oil sending unit, shot power steering (fixed 3 times), buzzy ride, air went out (leak) and faded paint job to a '99 Civic that runs like a dream and that I will never have problems with. Options complaints are not justifiable!

Model Reviewed: Civic EX Coupe

Strength:

RELIABILITY, quality of the construction, handling (esp. with upgraded wheels and tires--from the factory the stock rubber sucks), smoothness, sophistication of the VTEC engine, looks (I still get compliments after nearly 5 years), features (esp. keyless entry--I can never have another car without this feature), overall it just drives like a more expensive car.

Weakness:

There are several: The engine has decent pickup, but needs more low-end torque sometimes, especially when taking off from a stop or with a heavy load of people. Also, the trunk opening is too narrow and the rear head room is tight (comprimises of the coupe I guess). Finally, the window design uses a pin so secure the glass against the frame, but this tight pin ruins window tints after only a short while. Window tint has to be modified by placing it farther than normal from the edge.

I love my Civic. First of all, the reliability has been outstanding. Never once has the car given me any sort of mechanical problem, and it rides and drives just like when it was new. A friend of mine sat in it the other day and asked me when I had bought this new car. Impressive after nearly 5 years of ownership and 60,000 well maintained miles. It pays off to regularly wash and wash the car because the paint is still shiny.

The Civic has fairly decent acceleration and excellent handling. Sometimes, when you punch the gas and are already cruising or coming out of a corner fast, the VTEC kicks in and the car hauls. Very satisfying to rev the engine to 7,000 RPM. However, for heavy loads and take offs, it needs more power and especially torque. The handling, with an aftermarket set of Nitto tires, (205/45VR16) is excellent. Cornering limits are high and stability is good, even at over 100MPH. The fastest I've ever taken it is 115, but after 100 it feels pretty gutless. The ride is still very acceptable, you feel the road more but it is never harsh. The body structure feels amazing solid over bumps, with not even harsh railroad tracks causing it to flex. The steering has very good feel and an appropriate level of assist, if perhaps a bit too light at low speeds.

I like the interior very much, it looks nice and is very precisely put together. The 6 speaker cd stereo sounds good, with decent treble but limited bass response. Trumpets seems to sound surprisingly lifelike, but if you are an audiophile, you must at least upgrade the speakers for high-end sound. The interior is roomy for a small coupe, especially the front seat area. With some cooperation from front seaters, the back seaters can be decently comfortable for up to about 6ft tall guys.

Also, it is one of the few small cars that doesn't suffer from a dowdy/chick car image. It's actually quite respectable to drive and nice to look at, especially with the handsome 16 inch BBS wheels.

Problems: None, except two little niggles. First, the sunroof rattles when tilted up, but remains quiet when closed or retracted. Second, the seat track loosened a bit around 20K miles, but the dealer fixed it completely in less than one hour and it has never occured again. Overall, all I have had to do is regular maintenced and get the brakes shimmy smoothed out at 50K, which is normal, especially with my driving.

My friend has a Neon, and they don't compare. The Honda's quality is just far superior. Her Neon makes all sorts of weird noises and vibrations and is regularly in for service, even though it well maintained. A Corrola is probably as reliable as a Civic but much less fun to look at or drive. Civics are pricey when new but they do hold their value better than most any other small car.

I've had the car for about 5 months and I am just bored with it. To many problems with this car. Hey, what happen to everyone saying Honda's were the best made automobiles. I'll probably be getting another car.

Strength:

Awesome suspension, excellent ride, high quality interior materials, very bright headlights, 30+ MPG in town, and a great manual transmission. A true joy to drive.

Weakness:

Seriously needs a bigger engine. Hard for a tall person to get in and out of (although that's to be expected, of course). Radio display is hard to see at night.

I say save some money and buy a used, last generation Civic over the new, redesigned model. The suspension is very well designed, and the car rides unbelievably well for such a small car. The handling is snappy, responsive, and rewarding to drive. The engine could be bigger, but it revs up well down low, and has plenty of power around town. Acceleration is pretty good up through third gear, but after that there isn't much power. The manual transmission is easy to shift, although the throws are longer than the Accord's manual.

I think the Civic is one of the best looking small cars out there, much better than the Protege or Jetta. Ours is silver, with the optional moonroof and wheel covers, and it looks great. Cute, but really it's best suited for a girl. Guys usually drive the coupe.

The headlights light up the night in a serious way. They're a far cry from the dismal ones on our Caravan. I also like the interior lighting at night, but the radio display is dimly lit and hard to see.

This car is extremely well built. Honda's reputation for quality is carried in fine tradition by the Civic. The interior is well thought out, with comfortable, supportive seats and high quality materials covering the surfaces. I particularly like the padded dash.

For a fun to drive car that's a practical commuter or second car for the family, the Honda Civic tops the list. The EX with a stick is one great car. The Jetta is too expensive, and the Protege is rather homely looking, in my opinion. The Accord is a good alternative if you want something a little roomier and secure. Finally, I don't recommend the brand new Civics because the suspension was sacrificed for interior space and they're just not as good looking.

1997 Dodge Grand Caravan, 1985 Toyota Cressida Station Wagon. Much more fun to drive than either of them. Feels a bit like the Cressida (a fine luxury car) inside.

Strength:

Great on gas, cute, very reliable. I was rear-ended In the high speed lane (I was stopped for a traffic jam) My car had 4300 worth of damage.. This car still looks and runs great. Before the accident my hatch had this squeaking noise...once the car was fixed from the accident the noise went away. They still for the life of them can't figure out why my rear defroster doesn't work. My car is Vouge Silver,it always looks clean and sharp. I was thinking of trading it in for a 2001 ex coupe...NO WAY! for what I paid for it I love this car.

Weakness:

The only problem I think is the stupid cup holders...Ones huge and the cup tips when taking a corner. I have to hold the cup. The car Could use a little more power too.

I've had the car for 10 Months, I really like it. I work 47 miles from my house (x2). this car is good on gas, it's just what I need during the high gas rip off times. If anybody has any info about my rear defroster can email me at lmp1966@yahoo.com....Thanks in advanced

Strength:

Excellent reliability - good looks - excellent gas mileage - good acceleration - good steering & brakes - comfortable to drive. Good access
to back seats if you have children and need to reach them (while in passenger seat of course!)

Weakness:

The only thing I don't like about my Civic is the wind noise that you get at high speeds on the highway. It also doesn't have a lot of power when driving up mountain roads.

I love this car and will be hanging onto it for several more years although I now have 130,000 miles on it. Am shopping for a new 2nd car and would definitely buy another Honda if they still made a station wagon, which is what we want now to accomodate growing family. Will keep Civic to do work commuting duty for both adults in family. We do a lot of driving across the country and this little Civic has been great even to ride in all day long while the kids were small (12+ hours in one day sometimes). I wonder how many other small cars you can say the same about. Like I said the only drawback is that there is a lot of wind noise at high speeds on the highway, and we do a lot of highway driving. Besides regular maintenance the car has given us little or no problems. Combined with great gas mileage, excellent drivability (have avoided collisions on several occasions by agility and maneuverability of car), and after 7 years is still a great looking car - all add up to what is definitely the smartest purchase we ever made. Now if only Honda still made the Accord wagon!

Have had this car for 7+ years - had Toyota Celica before that which needed new transmission at about 100,000 miles. Not so for my Honda.

RELIABILITY, HARDLY EVER DO ANY REPAIRS. GOING STRONG AT OVER 170K. IT GOES AND GOES AND GOES. THE BUILD QUALITY IS OUTSTANDING FOR A LITTLE INEXPENSIVE CAR. GAS MILEAGE IS GREAT. IT STILL FELT NEW AT 120K. IT IS A CAR YOU NEVER HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT.

Weakness:

VERY FEW, WEAK POWER GOING UP HILL WITH A LOAD. HONDA DEALERS DO SUCK, WHY BECAUSE THEY CAN.

A WONDERFUL CAR, THIS IS THE SECOND OF MY THREE HONDA'S AND I HAVE GOTTEN GREAT VALUE OUT OF EVERY ONE. 86 ACCORD 93 CIVIC AND 96 ACCORD ALL GREAT CARS. THEY SEEM TO BE JUST MADE BETTER AND DESIGNED BY SMARTER PEOPLE. AT HIGH SPEEDS THESE CARS ARE ROCK SOLID NOTHING RATTLES OR SHAKES. WHILE DRIVING YOU WILL HEAR SOMETHING OR SMELL SOMETHING ODD BUT IT ALWAYS TURNS OUT TO BE THE CAR NEXT TO YOU. I AM COMPLETELY SOLD ON HONDA'S. I WAS LOOKING AT A DODGE CARAVAN OR AN ODYSSEY FOR MY NEXT VEHICLE. UNTIL I LOOKED AT THE COMMENTS FROM CHRYSLER OWNERS AND COMPARE IT WITH HONDA OWNERS. IT IS UGLY FOR CHRYSLER AND GREAT FOR HONDA. I HAVE TO SMACK MYSELF FOR EVEN THINKING ABOUT A CHRYSLER PRODUCT. GO HONDA!
