Honda Civic (2010 and older) Midsize | Compact

DESCRIPTION

The Civic is Honda’s compact car that is offered in sedan and coupe versions. First introduced as a small, inexpensive hatchback in 1972, the Civic has increased in size during its lifetime while continuing to offer excellent fuel economy. The entire Civic line was all-new for 2006.

The basic Civic is available as a sedan and coupe and comes in several trims: DX, DX-VP, LX-S, EX and EX-L. The Civic SI, the performance-oriented trim, offers 57 more horsepower than the base model, a few more performance options and a starting price of around $7,000 more than the base Civic.

The Civic also comes in two eco-friendly options: the Honda Civic Hybrid, which is reviewed separately, and the GX, a hybrid alternative that runs on Compressed Natural Gas. Unfortunately the GX is only sold in California (and other states that have accepted California's Zero-Emission Vehicle regulations). It costs about $10,000 more than a base Civic.

Strength:

as always honda makes a great car, easy to fix or upgrade ANYTHING in your garage on the weekends, easy to look at, and controls are all in perfect position, fuel ecconomy is beyond awesome (10 bucks-2 weeks driving), I can make a U-turn on a two-lane road, and warning sounds when door open or lights on. and rear seat is somewhat roomy for one, maybe two.

Weakness:

okay a few things arent that great. HONDA: when will you make a hatchback like you do in japan, the engine is okay, but dont dare try to put more than two people in it, if you do forget about passing anything, also no power windows or locks, which is not bad at first but soon gets VERY annoying, i definatly reccomend getting a air filter or exhaust upgrade for the weak engine, also DONT buy the factory CD player or Cassette, it's placed directly behind the cup holders, and is almost impossible to change CD's unless your in 1st gear (automatic). Also I am 6'3 and i drive this car, this is the main reason about my selling it, but I DO fit.

i paid 6k for my civic in early 99, my car has been rebulit somewhere, and probably sunk in some stupid river or something, but it still runs great, in one year ive never had a problem, except the MANUAL window broke, other than that, i drive the car, im single so its okay, but this car is not made for people who have to drive others around, I would say that the car is really great for a student or someone in a similar situation, but for a family i recommend a 4-door EX, the engine is a SOHC V-tec, and thats more appropriate for the bigger load, the jetta is also a nice car w/ a roomy back seat. but overall the civic hatchback is a excellent little car with alot of heart, and once you drive one you'll find yourself driving alot of places you dont need to go to, uhh, providing you're alone..haha

Strength:

Love the gas pedal, a light touch and this car is begging for a heavier foot. Love the aerodynamics, more so than the 01 models...kind of lost their rough and tougher edges. Plenty of aftermarket parts, great customer satisfaction from the dealer, and best of all RELIABILITY!

Weakness:

Road noise is common, so is vibrations when coming in contact with un-smooth roads. Squeling sound when applying brakes in reverse. Dealer said not to worry about problem. Interior quality could be more profound.

I Love this car!!! The reliability is there with Honda of course. It reminds me of a go-kart feel and racing type handling and response. You point it and it goes...(really fast). Not the most economical civic, it still has most cars beat with around 27mpg in the city and 32 on the highway. The only thing I would opt for in my civic is a sport-shift transmission. Usually I have a hard time wanting to respond to the moans of the engine by throwing the gear selector into 4th gear. Other than than throwing the car in neutral at high speeds, I have no other complaints about this well designed and purely fun car to own.

VTEC!!! VTEC!!! VTEC!!! This car is modest between 1000 and 5000 RPMs but when the Tach reaches 5500 ,and the VTEC kicks in, WATCH OUT!! this baby screams like a pissed-off bee out of hell. The B16A engine is one of the best engines out there and has the best response to aftermarket parts. (There are tons of aftermarkets parts for this car)

Weakness:

Honda Engineers could have done a better job with the interior.

Ive had this car for about a year now, and it doesn't seem to stop amazing me. It is extremely fun to drive and its flashy looks sure turn alot of heads. The gas milage is excellent and handles great. There are tons of aftermarket parts made specificly for this vehicle to enhance the performance and looks. This is definately the best car out there for under 20K! Wether you are a street racers or just a mellow easy rider, One way or another, you won't be disappointed!

Strength:

Reliability-duh, and of course the handling, quality of materials and workmanship, gas milage is excellent, and it has a road racer feel to it that still manages to be practical

Weakness:

Although the weakness are few and far between, the base 1.6 is sadly under powered, especiall when loaded down with passengers. The brakes tend to fade when used hard, and there is a bit of squeal. Ubtrusive road noise at highway speed can get annoying. Replacement parts can be a bit more expensive than competitors, but thankfully you won't have to buy them that often.

What else needs to said about the honda civic? Great value for the money, practical, sporty, reliable, great on gas, quality of materials and workmanship- what else can you ask for?! My one complaint, opt for either variation of the v-tec, the base 1.6 just does not have the power this car deserves. Thankfully the after market has the performance parts one could need.

Strength:

Reliability, reliability, and reliability. What else is there to say? Great gas milage, plus not a bad looking car either. The Honda dealership has shown me nothing but professionalism. They are great to deal with (but, alas, buying a Honda means that you won't be dealing with them much).

Weakness:

The engine is embarrasingly weak. When trying to go uphill with anyone in the back seat, I get the urge to sit forward in my seat out of concern that if I don't, I won't make it to the top. Shifting the car into reverse made a grinding sound the first few times after I drove off the parking lot. After that, it happened fewer and fewer times and it hasn't happened, well, I can't even remember when it happened last.

This is by far, the best value for your hard earned cash. I knew that I was buying a low-end model vehicle (as compared to the Accord), but it feels large for such a small car. I am currently looking at buying a SUV, and am amazed that the back seat of the Civic has more room than the 4-Runner and the Pathfinder. It is such a great car!

If you are seriously considering buying a small car, think about this: how many cars do you see built from the 70's and early 80's still out on the road today. From what I see, a fairly large proportion of them are Honda Civics. They are such great cars - did I already say that :-)

If you decide to buy one, you won't be disappointed.

Strength:

1) Gas Mileage - I drive about 2000miles/month and consistently achieve about 37mpg on highway and 33 city.
2) Safety - 5star safety rating from a small car is gret
3) Reliability - no problems at all so far.
4) Quietness - the engine is actually very quiet, especially on the highway. Going up hill or revving over 3000rpm can get bit noisy

Weakness:

1) Brakes - Worst brakes i've ever seen, could be just my car though. Very spongy don't feel confident.
2) Handling - should of kept the double wishbones but hey it's an economy car and not bad overall

Overall very happy with the car, does what it was designed to do very efficiently. Wish it had better brakes though.

VTEC enuff said!
Full economy 25 to 30 mpg
Excellent clucth and shifts
Looks can kill
Si is highly in demand from hot-rodders hence high re-sale value

Weakness:

high wind noise
poor interior parts - rattling everywhere door, front cockpit, back panel

I bought the car in early 2000 and put on 15,000 miles on it. It's still a new car and therefore no problems. This is a great car under $20K. Enough power - could do with more and great re-sale value. IF you're into hotrodding import this is THE CAR. Tons of after market parts for it.

Pretty good hanlding, turning high speed off highway ramps (25mph limits)at 55 to 60mph is no sweat!. Good lauching but 2nd gear is dead. Turns all heads when VTEC opens at 5500 rpm. Looks extremely sweet with my rear spoiler. The cluctch!, it's Honda technolgy at it's best!. Low and easy shifts.

My only problems is the interior. It seems(but its not) that it's falling apart. There are rattling everywhere and it's piss the sh*t out of me. Tehre are rattling from the door (both side), front cockpit near the CD plaer and back panel. My friends told me it's a Civic and this is bound to happen. But it's piss me off when I sit in my friend's Hyundai Elantra which is $5,000 cheaper than mine and there was dead silence.

what? I am the only one with a review for a '98 SI?!!? The Car itself is alright. Nice looking for the price.. Getting the 5 spd over automatic really made a great difference .. It is alright on gas being stock, but in the "Cold" winters out here if you get 300 miles on a tank you are doing good. I guess it wasn't made to handle -30C .. The sunroof is the best part about the car! .. not bad power under the hood either. The body lines are alright .. to bad everyone and the dog has this car thoo.. :)

Weakness:

Weakness .. humm where do you want me start! .. The first thing. The dealership was a pain in the ass, they took advantage of me where ever they could. There was a bad seal on the bumper the needed to be welded .. what did they do, duct'd tape it.. Now, every month like clock work the car is in for warrenty repairs .. not the engine thoo .. I like the engine .. The body is crap, paint chips way to easy, the sun roof knocks whenever you hit a bump .. The awnser to that was "You use it to much, they are only ment to be used about 4 times a year" what the f*&#*@#@IU#&($*&@#(*$&@#(*$&k is up with that.. why install it in the car if they arn't supposed to be used .. dumb ass.. the tires are crap like all you people have been said .. some problems .. just all of them instead of one or two like you people.

I GOT A damn lemmon .. I hate my car with a passion .. the bus is lookin a whole lot better these days, since I am on it more then in the car .. Honda doesn't want to do haft the warranty repairs on it, and there service techs do the work realy half ass.. when I get the car back it ass full of grease .. bolts on the floor .. what the hell is that about.. oh well .. I am sick of the car .. anyone want to buy it from me!

Strength:

Quiet, smooth riding, smooth shifting, great gas mileage, low cost to own, reliability. Huge trunk

Weakness:

Radio reception isn't that great. Front bumper eats bugs

I've had this car for about 3,000 miles and it's been great. I've averaged 34-36mpg, which is about 15 over my 98 Prelude, and the Civic doesn't take premium unleaded. I also like the fact that it's a cheap car since I have house payments and student loans. I chose to get the silver color and you really have to wash it twice a week to keep it looking good. The red Prelude needed a bath every couple days. The Civic is quiet and shifts like a knife in butter, this is one of the reasons I chose the five speed. The trunk is huge! I like everything about this car and plan on keeping it for at least 10 years to use as a commuter/2nd car as soon as the Subaru WRX STi comes out in 2003.
