Honda Civic (2010 and older) Midsize | Compact

Honda Civic (2010 and older) Midsize | Compact

DESCRIPTION

The Civic is Honda’s compact car that is offered in sedan and coupe versions. First introduced as a small, inexpensive hatchback in 1972, the Civic has increased in size during its lifetime while continuing to offer excellent fuel economy. The entire Civic line was all-new for 2006.

The basic Civic is available as a sedan and coupe and comes in several trims: DX, DX-VP, LX-S, EX and EX-L. The Civic SI, the performance-oriented trim, offers 57 more horsepower than the base model, a few more performance options and a starting price of around $7,000 more than the base Civic.

The Civic also comes in two eco-friendly options: the Honda Civic Hybrid, which is reviewed separately, and the GX, a hybrid alternative that runs on Compressed Natural Gas. Unfortunately the GX is only sold in California (and other states that have accepted California's Zero-Emission Vehicle regulations). It costs about $10,000 more than a base Civic.

Strength:

The fit and finish are still nearly perfect after 7 years/70,000 miles of driving. Have only been to the dealer for scheduled maintenence except for cap & rotor ($40) and horn ($40).

Weakness:

Large roof pillars create large blind spots. Cheap cup holders. Spartan interior compared to VWs, Audi A4, but much better than equivalent US manufacturers. Poor stock radio/speakers. Wind noise can be intrusive at high speed.

Do you want a car that gets decent gas mileage, has a few creature comforts and is rarely in the shop? Just look below at the sheer volume of positive experiences with this car, then compare it to the Plymouth/Dodge Neon, Chevy Malibu, Ford Escort, etc on this same site. Check Consumer Reports for further information.

I have seven years of experience with this vehicle--plenty of time for the metaphorical new car gloss to have faded and I can still say that this is a first rate vehicle. Best of all, the car is still worth 65% of what I paid for it--if you believe the various used car value calculators that abound on the internet.

Lack of useful trunk capacity is the only reason I will sell this car, but not for at least another 5 years! If you are on a limited budget, don't need lots of interior storage space and like having your car in the driveway instead of at the mechanic's garage this car is an excellent choice.

Strength:

Runs like a watch, has never failed to start on first try. Bring on the 100,000 mile warranty, not one item would required the 'hyundai hoax insurance' only wear and tear items have needed replacing. Excellent gas mileage 40+ on HWY. Superb gear ratios in automatic. Excellent power from 45-85 mph for a 110 hp vehicle. Surprisingly large trunk and interior for 8 year old subcompact. Fit an finish are superb, only now is developing a few minor creaks (after 8 years of potholes!). Overall an excellent car, worthy of the accolades it deserves. No other subcompact compares. The Corolla is surprisingly horrible, my 1993 is superior to a 1999 Toyota.

Weakness:

13 inch tires are very small. Cup holder is not designed for the new breed of fat american (like me) who demands 80 oz. beverages. No tachometer (or much of anything else for that matter). Spartan options, but makes up for it in resale value.

I highly recommend the Honda Civic, and all Honda products (with the exception of those stupid rebadged Isuzu's). The Civic I have is 8 years old, but looks great, and is great. No problems to report.

I am a self-styled expert on sub-compact cars. I driven thousands of miles in many of the beloved Civics rivals. 1999 Toyota Corolla was a squirrely handling piece of garbage in comparison. It handled like a boat, was slower at highway speeds and got worse fuel economy. 1995 Neon, the most wretched vehicle on the planet. I'd like to take a look at the dynamometer that claims the Expresso Neon has 150 HP. The Expresso name is apt because of the donuts and coffee you can consume at the dealer when the pile of garbage is on the rack. Looks like the Illinois penal system put togther the interior, the pull lever for the headlights, must have stolen it from a 1986 diplomat. Never buy a Chrysler product, they are horrible and there is a reason they can't give away their vehicles. 1996 Saturn, an interesting attempt to clone the Civic, and like the sheep clone, it dies much sooner than the real thing. The SL2 Saturn I drove extensively was an extremely mediocre vehicle. A blatant forgery of a Honda. 1999 Ford Focus, the supposed Civic killer. I couldn't believe how cheaply made the car was. The materials disgusted me, I expected much more, but forgot it was still a ford.

Strength:

Racing-style gauges, lots of room, flat floor in rear, 2 drive gears, very good handling, above-average stereo, standard CD player simply a lot of fun to drive!

Weakness:

No door lights, no lanyard on gas cap, fuel economy NOT what it should be, TERRIBLE arm rest...it serves no purpose whatsoever; who's the genius who designed that?!?!

I've had my Civic for a little over a month now, and overall, this car is great! I'm a 6'1 male, and I am very active outdoors with snowboarding, mountain-biking, etc... and I wanted a car that was roomy enough to carry all my gear, but still be affordable and fun to drive. I think I found it. Although I'm not a huge fan of the exterior styling, the rear-wing spoiler does a lot for the appearance. I wish there was more headroom though; I have less than an inch between my head and the ceiling. Another thing I like about this car is the fact that it redlines at 7,000 rpm; plenty of room to dodge in and out of highway traffic! Since they redisigned it, I think it looks much more streamlined and actually resembles a cross between an Accord Coupe and the older Civic coupes. Very cool.

One weakness I must point out, is that stupid armrest. Like I said, I'm 6'1, but I'm not exactly a giant and the rest of the car (sans headroom) is pretty well proportioned for anyone. But the armrest for the driver is VERY short and completely useless. The only way I can use it, is if I want only my elbow to rest on the end of it, that't it! Come on Honda, this isn't that difficult. I only wish they offered a larger replacement for the standard armrest, but I don't think they do.

Also, Herb Chambers Honda in Burlington, MA is EXCELLENT! I went to the Herb Chambers on Comm. Ave in Boston and it was terrible - the worst service I've ever received. There was a BIG difference between the salesmans' quote and the finance managers' quote which they blamed on me by citing that "there's no way he [my salesman] would have quoted you that", making me look like an idiot. Hmmm, what's interesting here is that my salesman had mysteriously left for the day when this took place. Of course, coming back later in the week wasn't an option for them because, well, "the deal may not stand when you come back". Can you say 'ethics violation'?!
Anyway, I was very hesitant about even purchasing from Honda, but I gave them another chance at the Burlington location, and I am very pleased with my decision. When I took my car to get the spoiler put on about 2 weeks after I purchased it, my salesman personally washed and dryed the entire car without my even asking! Plus the sales manager was overall very reasonable and helpful too. The Herb Chambers in Burlington isn't the largest Honda dealership, or the most "fancy", but they are definately the best dealership I've ever walked into. I simply can't say enough about their customer service! I plan on writing a letter to Herb Chambers himself to comment on this particular sales team.

I have to give a high rating because while the car has its flaws, its strengths greatly outweigh its weaknesses. As a 24 year-old, recent college grad, I couldn't afford to make a foolish $$ purchase. So, if you're like me and looking for a favorable cost/benefit ratio when purchasing a new car, look no further - and check out that dealership too; I doubt you'll be disappointed!

Seriously considered a 2001 Jetta GLS. I was pretty much sold on the Jetta, but then the price of the Honda won me over. Even when I purchased the rear-wing spoiler, side airbags and alarm system, it was still cheaper than a base Jetta GLS. Unfortunately, the Jetta does have a lot more features though. Another reason I chose the Civic is because it doesn't have that "cookie-cutter" shape that the Jetta has. In Boston, it seems everyone drives a VW, and I haven't seen very many 2001 Civic coupes, so that had some influence too.

Reliable, realiable, reliable. I drive like a maniac, and have put this car to the test in this last year and a half. My previous car(taurus) i went through two new transmissions in one year. And thats just cause of the way i drive. I havent had a real problem with this car. Ive gone 4 times the reccomended 3000mile oil change before changing it, spun it out at 90mph. cut many doughnuts with it. taken it off roading. and it still runs like the day i got it.

Weakness:

the joints are going bad, but its a 93, and you see the way i drive. other than that the passenger window track was broke when i got it. ive always wondered how you break a window track? guess it was just it's time.

Well, the civic is by far the best deal of the compact cars. DO NOT GET AN AUTO IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR ANY KIND OF POWER THOUGH. Ive raced ex's with auto, and taken 'em. The auto kills the civic. Basically, it gets great gas, good performance for the engine and price, helluva endourance. i can give it a 5 on the value, but overall...well, nothing's perfect, but the civic is pretty close.

Ive raced my brother's nissan 240sx. They are neck and neck. Its 2.4ltr engine will take mine in the longer run, but off the line they are the same. I drove my step mom's corolla for a while...ugh! slow and small. The only car in my family that will truly take it is my mom's talon turbo....gawd i love that car, but its too pricy, especially the insurance.

Gas mileage:26 city, 38 hwy even now
paint is still shiny after 100% outdoor parking
Engine-?no wear-Duralubed, Slick50 over the years.

Weakness:

somewhat loud road noise and wind noise- bad for the stereo. Not ultra luxury (but for its day...not bad). Not enough torque when 2+ people are in the car.

This is a great city car which still gets an average of 30mpg (city+hwy) despite 170,000 miles. It is an extremely useful car- I only wish I had a sunroof or a hatchback. Over the years it has needed only an alternator bearing, pwr steering pump, new radiator cap and 2 front wheel bearings. This is only after I lowered the car, but now it is back to normal- a commuter car. I have some wind noise due to the separating rubber at the mirror window corner(since day one), but all in all it has been great. What I can't believe is that the performance of the car has been the same since day one. Actually, now it revs better and rpms climb faster. On the way back from Tahoe I got 40.1 miles per gallon, twice. And on emissions tests, The engine has almost no emissions. I do have a K&N air filter which works great. A great car- cheap, cheap to maintain, and extremely useful- I will NEVER buy a car that gets less than 20mpg EVER.(think SUV)

Strength:

Gas Mileage, Near 40MPG in city, 45MPG on highway
Cheap to operate ($125 or less for 4 tires)
No mechanical problems to speak of
Large Rear Area (Hatchback) With seats down, you can cram a lot back there.

Weakness:

Loud Road Noise at highway speeds
Squeaky Clutch after 60k miles
No acceleration, NONE. Dog slow.
Cheap, hard to clean interior carpet

Has been a really good car for us. Very cheap, no repair bills other than the usual (somewhat expensive) Honda service. Has 66k miles on it now, still runs great, cranks in any weather 1st time. Crazy gas mileage, I've gotten in excess of 45MPG on the Highway.
It's been wrecked 3 separate times, (minor fender benders) fairly cheap repair costs, very little damage in low speed collision.
So far, a really good car for the money, probably going to keep it until it dies or I do. Hey, it's paid for...
It is a very small car, but that could be good or bad depending on what you want. My wife and I with our two kids in car seats fit, it's a little hard to get everything in, but once in, relatively comfortable.

Similar Products Used:

1989 Chevy Z-24- much faster car, worse repair and more expensive than Civic

Strength:

Very attractive car (my g/f loves the looks)
Great engine-mine is no DOHC VTEC (though SI is not available here) but with 127hp is still satisfying my taste
Interior is very comfy and easy to access
Handling is second to none. Very sharp and nimble.
Great gas MPG especially when fuel is damn expensive here
Extremely reliable

Weakness:

Passenger seat won't return to original position when accessing rear seats, WHY?
NO ABS- not even for an option
Crappy stereo system

All civic coupe in thailand come equipped with leather seat, automatic tranny, 4 wheel disc brakes, alloy wheels, and low profile ties. All are standard. I really like the leather seats- makes this car looks much more luxurious. But they don't offer cruise control and ABS- even for options! I really love the sporty gene of this car. The engine is quite powerful for a small 1.6 liter. Handling is superb. A great city car to zing along the traffics (you might have heard of how bad the traffic is in bangkok). The tranny shifts very smoothly- though i'd prefer a manual to squeeze every juice out of VTEC but it's not available. And it's a Honda, so the car will last you a lifetime!
All in all, I'd highly recommend this car to anyone who wants a small, reliable car. I've never tried the 2001 Civic so I don't how it compares with the previous model. But the new looks cannot compare with the 2000 model and i don't think the mcpherson strut in front can perform as well as 4-wheel double wishbone. But hey, as long as it's a new Civic model, i think it should drive as well or maybe better than mine.

Strength:

very reliable, cheap to run, not bad looking, fun to drive, versatile

Weakness:

smallish gas tank limits range (2001 model fixed this problem)
ummm...not much else, other that usual small car gripes

This is a wonderful car...it has never had a single problem (well only 2 years old, that should be expected) and it can be entertaining to drive - if you want to putt along with traffic, or open it up and have a little fun, it does either with ease. Granted not a road rocket, but it does well enough. I'm continually amazed by what I can stuff inside - I bought a 6 ft stepladder and some 10 ft sections of pvc last week, and I was able to get all of it inside and still close the trunk!
The Ex model has enough features to satisfy most people, I traded in my 89 Legend Coupe when I bought it and felt right at home.
Overall, a very satisfying car. Unless you needed to own a larger car, you could never go wrong choosing a Civic - I feel very smart for choosing this car over the others in its class.
