Honda Civic (2010 and older) Midsize | Compact

DESCRIPTION

The Civic is Honda’s compact car that is offered in sedan and coupe versions. First introduced as a small, inexpensive hatchback in 1972, the Civic has increased in size during its lifetime while continuing to offer excellent fuel economy. The entire Civic line was all-new for 2006.

The basic Civic is available as a sedan and coupe and comes in several trims: DX, DX-VP, LX-S, EX and EX-L. The Civic SI, the performance-oriented trim, offers 57 more horsepower than the base model, a few more performance options and a starting price of around $7,000 more than the base Civic.

The Civic also comes in two eco-friendly options: the Honda Civic Hybrid, which is reviewed separately, and the GX, a hybrid alternative that runs on Compressed Natural Gas. Unfortunately the GX is only sold in California (and other states that have accepted California's Zero-Emission Vehicle regulations). It costs about $10,000 more than a base Civic.

Strength:

Great gas economy, quick and fun to drive, and perhaps the most dependable car on the planet.

Weakness:

Road noise, windshield fog.

We've had this car in the family since it was new. It is the most dependable vehicle that I have ever seen. Using non-oxygenated gas, it gets about 60mpg on the highway. It has been crunched three times and is still the most reliable vehicle imaginable. The V-tech engine is great! Ours has almost 100,000 miles and I expect it to last for at least another 100,000 miles.

Strength:

1) Reliable! I've had this car in the shop like 3 times in the last four years for anything besides oil/timing belt, et al. Replaced the CV Boots and the axles, and the clutch. I bought it in 1996 with 67,000 miles, and now it has 223,000 miles on it, and it still has the original engine, alternator, starter, and just about everything else. Suggestion: Don't get a job delivering pizzas if you love your car.

2) It despises gas. I drove from Grand Junction, CO to Saint George, UT on 3/4 of a tank. Try doing that in a Lincoln.

3) Overall nice car for a young adult on a budget

Weakness:

1) Power. It has a lot of pep for a little car, but that's because it weighs so little. Mine is a 1.5 litre engine, so I'm sure it has roughly 100 or so horses under the hood.

2) Cup holder too fragile, and broke on me (I know - minor detail, but it sucks holding a 32oz big gulp between your thighs)

3) Those hydrolic whachamacallits that operate the back hatch are both detached, now I have to use a stick to keep the hatch open. I put this under the "wear and tear" category.

Good economical car. This is the type that if you take care of it, it will last forever.

The time has come to buy something bigger and sturdier, I'm looking at the 2001 Mazda Protege, 2001 VW Jetta and the 2001 Nissan Sentra.

By now, this 1993 car is good for a first car, but I'm sure the newer Hondas are just as reliable.

Strength:

Ride, handling, steering, engine, gas mileage, looks

Weakness:

it is pretty small

Im leasing a Honda Civic Ex for 238/mo 1000 down.
Overall, this car is an excellent value. The handling and ride are both excellent for a little car. The 2 door is very nice looking, but the 4 door looks a little bland. As expected the car gets excellent gas mileage and is very reliable. The ex comes with nice standards such as a sunroof, and cd player. The seats are tolerable for a long ride, but not extremely comfortable, and people will not be that happy sitting in the back seat.

Strength:

Economical, Gas Mileage

Weakness:

It's an econobox, for crying out loud!

Paid around 12000 for one equipped with AC - on the high side of cheap cars. The car felt extremely solid though and the 4 banger was actually fun to drive. Felt zippy, even though it was extremely slow. Factory radio was lucky to put out any sound!

If you're after exceptionally well made, reliable transportation, this is your car. No real problems at all with the Civic Hatchback as a economy car.

LOOKS, GAS MILEAGE (25-35), INTERIOR IS DESIGNED FOR AN AFTERMARKET SOUND SYSTEM, BILLIONS OF MODIFICATIONS (IE: BODYKITS, ENGINE SWAPS, AFTERMARKET ENGINE AND TRANNY UPGRADES) VERY CHEAP MSRP: $11500

Weakness:

NO POWER WINDOWS OR LOCKS, CHEESY 13" WHEELS, TOO HIGH, NO POWER (106 HP AND BARELY ANY TORQUE) HONDA HAS A TYPE R VERSION OF THE CIVIC HB WHICH PUTS OUT 170HP AND 130 TORQUE..BUT IT IS IN JAPAN

I PAID $10500 NEW BUT USED IS ONLY $6500 (TERRY YORK HONDA AT VALENCIA, CALI HOOKED ME UP). THIS CAR IS NICE...BUT IT NEEDS A FEW MODIFICATIONS. IF YOU GET THIS CAR, INVEST SOME EXTRA CASH TO MAKE IT LOOK BETTER--$1000: NICE SET 17" WHEELS...$1000:SUSPENSION UPGRADES ( ADJUSTABLE COILOVER LOWERING SPRINGS, AFTERMARKET SHOCKS, STRUT BARS, SWAY BARS)...$1000: A BODY KIT ( FRONT BUMPER, SIDESKIRTS, REAR BUMPER) AND PAINT...LESS THAN A $1000 FOR POWER WINDOWS & LOCKS...$1000: AFTERMARKET EXHAUST, AIR INTAKE AND HEADERS ( OR U CAN SWAP OUT THE ENGINE FOR A STRONGER ONE ie AN INTEGRA GSR OR TYPE R...BUT THAT COSTS A LOT)
conclusion: I'VE BEEN DRIVING THIS CAR FOR 4 YEARS NOW AND I HAVEN'T HAD ANY ENGINE PROBLEMS OR TRANNY PROBLEMS. THE GAS MILEAGE IS STILL AROUND 25-35 AND IT LOOKS NICE WITH ALL THE STUFF I ADDED TO IT. THIS CAR IS GREAT FOR THOSE WHO ARE ON A TIGHT BUDGET OR HAVE A LONG COMMUTE TO WORK.

Weakness:

should I have waited for the 2001 model???

I paid 15,500 total for 60 months. A very good deal for a car this well made and fun to drive! Its too soon to see the "honda reliability" but I do have confidence. I cant stress how well made this car is,to say that its perfect for a college student is a huge understatment!!! It really does turn heads, especially with the hispanic and filipino community. I really like the look of the front lights and I was suprised at how strong the ac is. The 5-spd is so easy to use there is no reason for a weaker automatic. The interior is pretty boring(VERY boring) so I had to get A really cool cd player to offset my friends "oh,its ok inside"comments. And by the way this the cab seems to be acoustically balanced, a nice suprise. I do however wonder if I should have waited for the 2001 model. I now hear its going to have more base horsepower, nicer INTERIOR,along with new front and back body mouldings. I wish someone(my dealer)would have mentioned that.

Strength:

With about 150k miles on my 91 Civic Si, it still has guts, no rust (no salt used in winter here, though), deft handling, comfortable front seats, never breaks down.

Weakness:

Kind of noisy on the highway, and sluggish with more than one passenger aboard. To be expected in this price range, of course.

Overall verdict on Honda as a manufacturer: wonderful.
My first dealer was okay, too. But I've moved to a smaller city with just one dealer. When I went for a US$150 annual tune-up, this outfit immediately presented me with a roster of repairs worth US$500. Fortunately, I have a good friend here who is a first class mechanic and he informed me that literally none of those repairs were needed.

I don't know how common this sort of jerk is in Honda's dealer network.

Model Reviewed: Honda Civic 4 dr sedan

Strength:

great gas mileage
dead reliable
speedier on manual trans models
good power to weigh ratio

Weakness:

Low mileage causes problems to pop up early. Should have got a moderate mileage car for better results.
Needs high rpm to get more power and torque, that's normal for a tiny engine, tho

I bought it in December of 1996 for $3,650 with 42,444 miles on it. I've owned it for almost 4 years and has 90,100 miles on it. I learned my lesson not to buy a car with low mileage, they get more problems than y think with a average mileage car. I prefer not to say it. But I love the car pretty good. IT has never broken down, it can go anywhere all over the place without a problem. The problems are just mostly minor and moderate. The acceleration on the civic is good enough and much better than the auto version of the civic. The 5 spd manual tranny shifts smoothly and crisply. The 0-60 times for the civic is 12.1 secs (best time) compare it to the 1987 Honda CRX DX with the same engine can go to 60 mph in 10.1 secs. It's 2 seconds slower because CRX is lighter than the civic 4 door sedan. But it's more than enough to merge in freeway even at 4,500 feet elevation. The engine is a 1488cc 12 valve 4 cylinder engine making 76 hp at 5500 rpm and 84 lb ft of torque at 3500 rpms. The brakes are prone to warp easily just like the CRX. It has enough power getting over 90 mph, but I'd not recommend you to do that. The interior is fairly noisy at highway speeds. At 70 mph it runs at 3500 rpms. It's fairly high rpms for highway speed. It gets high as 45 mpg on the highway and low as 25 mpg when driving hard and heavy city driving. It has excellent gas mileage. Cornering on the car is somewhat fair, it leans a bit alot in sharp turns but grips on pretty well. IT wears Michelin x series all season tires. It's mostly stock. The interior is nearly showroom condition. Happy motorings!

Brakes not good either.

Good looking, fun to drive, Good Road feel, Good handeling,
Spacious considering its size, Good steering and very predictable. But definately lacks power. You will know it when you go up hills. Reliable for the first 6-7 years then you start to have loads of problems. Overall a fun car to drive that is not very expensive.
