Honda Civic (2010 and older) Midsize | Compact

Honda Civic (2010 and older) Midsize | Compact

DESCRIPTION

The Civic is Honda’s compact car that is offered in sedan and coupe versions. First introduced as a small, inexpensive hatchback in 1972, the Civic has increased in size during its lifetime while continuing to offer excellent fuel economy. The entire Civic line was all-new for 2006.

The basic Civic is available as a sedan and coupe and comes in several trims: DX, DX-VP, LX-S, EX and EX-L. The Civic SI, the performance-oriented trim, offers 57 more horsepower than the base model, a few more performance options and a starting price of around $7,000 more than the base Civic.

The Civic also comes in two eco-friendly options: the Honda Civic Hybrid, which is reviewed separately, and the GX, a hybrid alternative that runs on Compressed Natural Gas. Unfortunately the GX is only sold in California (and other states that have accepted California's Zero-Emission Vehicle regulations). It costs about $10,000 more than a base Civic.

Strength:

-Drum tight fit and finish
-Very quiet and smooth for its price range
-Conservative but nice looking (will age nicely)
-Drum tight fit and finish (I know, but it's important)
-Engine is silky when cruising

Weakness:

-127hp V-Tech, although adequate, could give more oomph
-Cup holder cover (when open) blocks optional CD slot
-6 speaker system makes nice sound but could use a higher powered amp

This car had one initial irritation when I drove it off the lot. The Tachometer didn't work. Honda replaced it that week and since then, I haven't had to take it in for any problems in over two years. I found that after turning down the treble to about 1/4 in the stock stereo system, the sound quality improved dramatically. Apparently the tweeters which are housed on the driver and passenger window sills behind the side-view mirrors produced way too much "tweet" for my taste and often became too shrill when the bass was turned up to adequate levels. Unfortunately I didn't modify the stereo controls for about a year after purchase. I paid about $15k for it two years ago. I recently checked Kelly Blue Book's website and found that my car has hardly depreciated at all. My friend's '98 Escort which he purchased at the same of year has shown significant depreciation. On a road trip in his SE, I found that the knobs and controls had a flimsy feel to them. Also, we discovered, his engine is quite a bit louder than mine when navigating through the Rockies. Yes, the Escort was much cheaper, but I can already tell that his car is starting to show signs of age. I wouldn't trade my Civic EX Coupe for any other small car (except maybe the 2000 Civic Si). Great isn't used very often to describe this segment of the market, but I would gladly offer up that praise to the Civic EX. The king of small cars.

Strength:

refinement, user friendliness, reliability, MPG, and VTEC.

Weakness:

Bland styling, but other than that no real weaknesses. It's a small *economy* car, not a muscled up sports car or midsized car, so I'm not going to complain about how weak it is.

The Civic serves it's duty quite well- and that is to get from point A to B. It's a no frills economy car with a dash of VTEC and a lot of reliability. The benchmark of compact cars.

For those of you wanting more performance, though, I recommend the Integra- model year 90 and up. And if you have the finances, get the Type R.

I like the body style. The instrument panal. It is easy to read.

Weakness:

The seats suck. I feel like I am in a high chair. I don't like the way the comfort and the entertainment console look like. It makes me feel like I'm in a toy.

The car is okay concidering all things. But need improvement in torque, the uncomfortable seat, and the style of the entertainment console.

*Fun to drive (after it moves into 2nd gear)
*Reliable (for the most part)
*Very pleasing to look at
*I love the power sunroof

Weakness:

*It is NOISY, and has a lot of rattles!!!
*Sometimes difficult to start (on hot days, or after parking it for an hour and a half....oh, no!!! It's acting like my old Subaru!!!)

I bought my Honda about a year ago (used) for $12,690; I feel that the price was fair for what I have. In the future, I will not buy another used car; it is too difficult to tell if it will be a good car. I just hope that my car will behave long enough for me to finish making payments!!

I recommend this car to anyone who is looking for a fun car to drive.

Model Reviewed: /SI

Strength:

I like the look of the 2000 Civic Si, I have the Milano Red paint... and the car comes stock with 15" Aluminum Alloy wheels.

The performance is decent once the engine hits "V-Tec". V-Tec kicks in at about 5500 RPM's... which can be somewhat daunting until you get used to it. Remember however, that red-line is about 8000 RPMS!

Weakness:

I wish that Honda had made the Si model available in a hatchback version. I used to have a '92 Civic Si (hatchback) and it was a great car!

My biggest problem with the 2000 Civic Si is the gas mileage. It is EPA rated at 26 city/ 31 hwy. With over 2000 miles now, I am averaging about 20 mpg... I have had it to the dealer, and they say nothing is wrong. I would not have bought this car if I knew it would only get 20mpg.

Other inconveniences: The cup holders stink, they are way too large to hold a soda can without toppling over on turns. I am 5'10" and still find it a bit difficult getting in and out of the Civic, and finding comfortable adjustments for the seat and steering wheel.

Even with the V-Tec engine, power could only be called "decent"... I am not sure I would consider the Si to be a sports car.

I paid $17,300 (before tax & tags), which was about $600 below msrp. If the poor gas mileage does not improve with engine break-in (and it doesn't appear to be budging) I will consider selling this Civic Si for something else.

If I was getting 25mpg in this car, I would be singing praises! Good power, decent fuel economy, and reliability are the reasons I bought this car. My last Civic Si averaged about 28mpg, so there is something wrong with this one as my driving habits haven't changed.

From what I've read on the internet, this car appeals mostly to younger drivers (early 20's) who spend enormous amounts of time and energy adding extras like: suspension lowering kits, superchargers/turbochargers, cold air intakes, exhausts, etc... I am not one of those drivers. I bought this car because of my good experience with my previous Honda Si, unfortunately this reincarnation has not followed suit.

Strength:

All reliable. Various years varied overall, but quite impressive.

Weakness:

Changes in seat designs through the years not reflective of Good Ergonomics. All hit and misses. 84-91 Fair torque, 92-2000, poor. Honda has a great reputation. Honda, dont let it go to your head! Remember what put the company on the map! Reliable, Affordable and fun.

As you can see, this is a rating for 1984-2000 Civics.
My reason for writing this is that people report on 1 maybe 2 models of car, but arent really creating a unique view of what made that model special to them, or what they would like to see Honda come up with in the future for their next generations of Civic.
Being a fan of honda, I see alot of great people here talking about their pride and joy of various models. I am also a person that believes that Every model made has a uniqueness all its own. Honda is noted as being a company that believes in offering quality cars. We have all seen that. I do however have some commentary that may spur others to write honda as a suggestion to your and my cause. Which is primarily to "listen to the customer".
Honda seems to go in spurts. In the 1984 model year, the civic was a Drastic change from its small and rather basic puritan series (1980-1983). It was larger, more powerful, more refined, and dare I say..sporty? It had an unusual design change structurally that that put the wheels in the "corners" of the car. This had 2 major effects..more interior space, and better handling, as well as road noise. Road noise? Honda had created an unusal situation. With the movement of the wheel positions, the distance between the walls of the fenders and the interior space are also closer. So, road noise. One quibble from my part and ill explain why later on. Honda also refined the engine into a more smooth and still extremely fuel efficient car. Handling was never a strong point until this body style. I have driven both the Sedan and Hatchback models and have enjoyed thier spry handling. The seating was far better than before, and I have really felt this is the car that Honda used to generate a more "fun and frivilous attitude" for those who didnt want to spend alot of money for a car, but wanted sound reliability. (doesnt everyone?) this was a good choice in a wide array of offerings from other companies. The car had a few reliability quirks, but until 120,000 miles, most never showed up. I could go into more details, but mainly these cars were pretty decent. 1984-1987 Generation overall when Compared to the engineering from many other manufacture's, its almost insane to imagine that companies were pumping out so much crap, and Honda was generating these little jewels. Im not saying everything was "crap" but compared to Honda, Many were either behind, or WAY behind. (detroit?..are you listening?). I dont want to give the impression of biased opinions. I Dont despise any company. But I do however give credit where its due. And the US automakers were WAY behind compared to Honda. Especially in the 1980's.
Ok, now that be said we have the 1988-1991 models. I personally thought These cars were really a step in the right direction from the 1984-1987 models. Mainly in the way of refinement. They took the best of the earlier generation models, and combined them with many additional refinements. Smoother power, more comfortable seats, improved handling, great new styling...road noise. Road noise? yep. Honda had done it again. Though improved in many ways, Road noise was still a problem.
These cars really stepped to the beat of a different drummer. They were really really good cars. I found them to be not only reliable and fun, but also cars that you could call "pet names" like "tried and true" or,"titanium butt".IN many occasions, I had heard only one other manufacturer have so many pet names, and that was Subaru.(I wont go into details about them because I would be writing about a totally different subject of car and its purposes). The improved power and handling made these cars not only good on gas, but in comparision to even the earlier generation..just a whole lot more car. I wish I could show illustrations with this, but I cannot with this format. A trip in the world of the "web" can take you further than I can, but my thoughts are there to those who want to know what these cars looked like that are a full generation behind me time wise, to see what cars im talking about are. hey, most of these are still on the ROAD. I guess in a word, to sum up the 1988-91 generation. Really good stuff.
Now, for the 1992-1995 model years. Honda started with a clean sheet of paper for these cars. They were in essence a Sporty breed that Honda in my opinion shouldnt have moved away from design wise as so many people liked this body style and its agressive styling cues. I suppose That Honda decided this generation might have been "too much" for the the public, and that they might have gone overboard with the intent of allowing people to go back to what made Honda special in the first place..Practicality in style and execution. Practical for the masses. And that might work for some, but Honda Had the reputation back then for Reliability. What where they thinking that FUN couldnt be one of these factors in the following generations? I suppose that we will never know.
Anyway, I really found this generation to be interesting. The seats were great. I have gone long haul in these babies, and I havent seen seats EVER as good as these from Honda. The handling was pretty much like the 88-91 models, so Not alot of change there. The Dash was cute, intelligent, and displayed well. The Headlights were Strange to me design wise. I cant see why..(and neither could anyone else) Why Honda decided to move to the smaller headlight design. If these little guys get dirty..they really loose luminosity. I guess it was a "style" thing. And yes, they were good with the car I suppose. The fenders and bumper design couldnt possibly support any other generation.
I was impressed with the bodystyle myself. I liked the way the car looked going down the road. It had a unique refinement about it that kinda took from the 2 prior generations. You could feel the "sportyness" and the refinement balled into one. These cars Have thus far proven to be the most reliable out of all the earlier designs. This car also isnt without some funny faults. A big one seems to be a "ticking" sound from the valvetrain. All of them seem to start around 50,000 miles, and it seems to be something to do with oil pressure and clearances at the valve/cam assembly. When warm its quiet. I find this highly unusual for Honda mainly because its unique only to this generation, and only CX and DX models. (non v-tech). All in all, this car generated alot of excitement in the realm of aftermarket, and has created alot of clubs and hop up specialty businesses. All thanks to the introduction of the sizzling V-Tech engine which came available in 1994 in the Ex. Alot of revs, but a neat way of making more use of a camshaft. These cars were a kick to drive. And upto that point, Honda was never considered as a "performance" possibility. These cars also suffered from Road noise. All of these cars experienced low torque troubles and created a generation of "clutch slipping". Honda hit alot of nails..broke only a few. Overall, definately one of Hondas very best generations.
The last generation, 1996-2000, Another Honda clean sheet of paper alteration. Honda stepped back to 1988-91 generation styling, and added More power and a considerable improvement in size. These cars were almost the same dimensions as an accord from the 1986-1991 Genere!. Thats really substancial!. The cars gained 100 cc and the average engine was no longer only a 1500 as in prior generations, but a new refined 1600. The engine has more torque, but alot was eaten up by the new Body styles rather "rotund" shape. The car is rounder, sleeker, and more dare I say, Practical shape. The car Has good handling, but Its not as good as prior generations. Its a bigger car these days. Its not as quick as it used to be. Its not a powerhouse anymore then its earlier brothers. It is however another example of good engineering. Its everything Honda has everyone realizing is true. Honda makes good cars. And they do. But, I think at this time, Honda needs to rethink on an issue. The things the customers want, and the Positives and negatives of all prior designs that helped CREATE the future body styles and all of those yet to come. For instance, The 1992-95 seats were fantasic. Honda tries to tout "ergonmically sound", ok, then why arent you using those wonderful seats for the new models? Why does the styling have to be "basic"? And if you look at alot of todays consumer, Style and function is just as in as it was 20 years ago isnt it?. I guess in a sense im kinda harping on Honda for pushing the civic into a different class of car. Not too long ago, a civic was classed as a fun, small family, college student, single person car that was affordable and created a sense of "pride of ownership" like all other models prior. I think in this way, honda might be slipping. If I wanted a Civic to be an Accord, I would buy an ACCORD!. Now, they are so much closer to related, they are no longer just "big and smaller".. its now big..and slightly bigger. I always owned a civic to represent its NAME..Civic...That means For the civilians.. A car that meets everyones needs, And with that..Economy, which made Honda who they are. I mean after all, go back to the early 1970s, and in 1973..a little car called "civic" was born. And at that time, the OIL EMBARGO was A big deal. And though I thought those cars were a bit too small for my tastes, they had, quality, low cost, and fun all in one package. Lets not forget our roots Guys. IS the Insight the new "civic"? We are presently on the apex of a new oil problem, and with that.. Honda? Any thoughts?
Keep up the good work Honda. ALot of Us like what you do, but are confused why you dont always listen.
In conclusion..All you Honda owners..Honda isnt perfect, but they certainly do try, And I am very impressed with Hondas Track record for dependability. I worked in a Parts store for 7 years, and have been rebuilding engines, and a tech for many more years. I have worked on many hondas, (mostly older generations as the newer ones keep trucking right along). I have also worked on many other cars, so Im not biased. I just know that seeings believing. And with Honda, you really cant go wrong.
Sorry this isnt only 50 words. But I have owned a car from all generations, and I feel like this is a valid and forthright document concerning Honda and thier owners.

Everything I want in a car.
Engine - 160 hp from 1.6 liters. Sounds beautiful above 6000 rpm.
Suspension - Excellent handling and good ride too.
Ergonomics - All of the controls look and feel precise.
Quality - No problems whatsoever, typical Honda.
Value - GTIs are nice, but expensive. Nothing else compares to the Si.

Weakness:

All minor:
Cruise control - common to all Hondas, it has to slow down 5 mph before it starts working. Aarrrgh!
Oil filter - also common to all Hondas, you have to jack the vehicle up to get to it. Once removed, oil runs all over the place.
Low Geared - The Si is a sports car, but it needs another gear or something on the highway. The EX is better for this.

I paid $15,600 used. I love this car. It is truely an exhilarating sports car! And useful. It has a good back seat, a nice CD player, a sunroof, keyless entry. No leather for under 20 grand though.
