Honda Civic (2010 and older) Midsize | Compact

DESCRIPTION

The Civic is Honda’s compact car that is offered in sedan and coupe versions. First introduced as a small, inexpensive hatchback in 1972, the Civic has increased in size during its lifetime while continuing to offer excellent fuel economy. The entire Civic line was all-new for 2006.

The basic Civic is available as a sedan and coupe and comes in several trims: DX, DX-VP, LX-S, EX and EX-L. The Civic SI, the performance-oriented trim, offers 57 more horsepower than the base model, a few more performance options and a starting price of around $7,000 more than the base Civic.

The Civic also comes in two eco-friendly options: the Honda Civic Hybrid, which is reviewed separately, and the GX, a hybrid alternative that runs on Compressed Natural Gas. Unfortunately the GX is only sold in California (and other states that have accepted California's Zero-Emission Vehicle regulations). It costs about $10,000 more than a base Civic.

Strength:

hold their value unlike anything, dependable, potentually fast, the easiest car to find mods for (racing parts are always at the top of the list for hondas these days)

Weakness:

lol, they will make mechanics go broke. stock civics have how torque but is easily fixed. when civics are reviewed "new" they dont account for their potentual.

i own a 93 civic dx. i cant immagine driving anything else.

if your looking for a new car check out a new civic "si". at 160 hp and 8000rpm redline comeing out of a 1.6l engine, all under $18,000.. comepare that to a new gti and price them both..... YOU TOO WILL BECOME A HONDA BELIEVER!!!!!

Strength:

A very good looking car. Nice quality (its a honda)! Great gas mileage, takes about $9 to fill it up! Nice looking interior, taken it on 3 long trips and i honestly think it could be alot worse.

Weakness:

Factory system could be better. It sounds pretty good, but it is usually a college kid car, and college kids usually want a nice system. Could use more acceleration.

I paid 17,600 for mine brand new. Its fully loaded, alarm, keyless, moonroof. Its a great car, I love it and will definitly buy another one. It is expensive for its class, but you get what you pay for.

Strength:

Responsive in turning. Good fuel efficiency. The heater quickly warm the interior, very important in winters.
Good powe, especially above 60mph

Weakness:

Acceleration is slow. The gear changes too fast, if stays in lower gear longer, I might accelerate faster. The suspension is a bit hard for the price range i paid.
AC button easily turn on by accident. The audio set should be set more to the left, it is hard to reach from the driver seat. Car engine is a bit too loud, especially above 60mph

I like it so far. Looks sturdy and elegant. I got the titanium silver colour (it is introduced on 2000 EX model). nice color, easy maintenance.
Though I think the price could be lower.

Strength:

Good build quality
Lots of room
Comfortable
Lots of room for mods

Weakness:

Poor power (torque)
Handling so-so
Not as sporty as expected

A friend and I did an extended test drive of this car. According to the numbers it should have been an outstanding car, but I was pretty underwhelmed. It didn't feel much better than the regular Civic.

First off the motor was guttless, even above 5000rpm I still felt like getting out and pushing. My friend echoed my comments. The non-VTEC Prelude Si that I had (93) which is rated at the same 160hp was light years ahead in terms of performance. My current GTI (4cyl) is only rated at 115hp but feels faster, primarily because of it's torque, which the VTEC lacks.

The handling was week. However this probably isn't fair because I'm used to driving my GTI which has a Neuspeed Sofsport/Boge setup. That said, the GTI had better driving feel, rides as smooth, and outhandles the Civic easily. I'm sure with some aftermarket mods the Civic would be a lot better but I expected a lot more from the factory. Unfortunatley most aftermarket setups in Civics get setup by people who don't know suspension well, and either end up too low or too stiff for street use. The Civic can be setup well I'm sure, it's front-rear double wishbone setup and light weight should make it a great handling car...just PUULEESE put an engine with some torque in it...

Ergonomics were typical Honda, without fault. The only problem I had was that the seats weren't any good. The seats in my 91 Civic Si were a lot better for side support and comfort.

Basically it's a nice car, but not enough nicer to justify purchasing it over an EX or DX. You're better off getting the EX and putting your money into a good suspension setup and a few other tweeks. A VW bug with the 1.8t will trounce the Si anyday (although the stock suspension in that car could use some work) and if you chip the 1.8t it screams. I'm a devout VW person. I've owned Hondas and wanted a good excuse to get back into one, but the test drive I did in the Si convinced me why I like VW's. Honda's are great cars, and hands down more reliable then VW's, but they aren't made for drivers, they understeer too much and just don't have that good german driving feel.

I definitely give the Civic DX and EX 5 stars, great cars for what they are designed for: simple, reliable, comfortable transportation. The Si, unfortunately isn't enough better off the showroom floor to justify the Si tag in my opinion. I think with PROPER mods it might be a very nice car though.

Weakness:

The 2-door coupe has no backroom at all and the entrence to the back sit is very annoying. The doors are too heavy even if it is a 2-door.

Strength:

Many thoughtful features: warning when headlights are left on and door opened is especially nice idea.
Fuel economy is excellent.
Fit and finish are flawless, overall appearance is very attractive.
Turning radius is short.
All the places where wear or dirt are likely are black plastic, e.g. where you grab to close the hatch.

Weakness:

I don't like the having a right hand outside rear view mirror as it makes it harder to park in the right hand side of our garage. However it seems that about all contemporary cars have it.

Around $12,000. Would definitely recommend to anyone who wants a small, fuel-efficent car that has an appealling look and is fun to drive.

This car handles very well, is very reliable and is comfortable and sensible too. My only complaint is that the paint is way thin and chips very easily. If you get live with this, then you will be happy with the vehicle.

Quick Little car, have suprised many other drivers with it's snappyness.
Great handling.
Excellent construction quality of fit and finish.
Good gas mileage.

Weakness:

Little low end torque,my older Nissan NX2000 and NX200 SER
had a lot more low and midrange torque.
Having to run premium fuel(especially at the recent prices)
Radio at a funky tilted angle, sun glares off of it at times
Little clutch feel.
Buttons for AC too easily accidently engaged.

Overall love this car with exception of the few shortcomings above.Would highly recommend to prospective
buyers. I got a deal on the price $16,500 (List $17.800)
especially when I bought it in Feb of 99 when it was first
released. The dealer priced it wrong. They were going above list price at most dealers.

Strength:

Weakness:

-very little bottom end power

I got a '97 HX for my 16th birthday. In July of '98, I totalled it. I was doing 65 mph when I t-boned a Ford Contour. My 7-month-old was in the back seat & neither one of us got hurt, which was amazing! I replaced that one with a '98 EX.
The first time I saw the Si in a magazine, I knew I had to have it. I went to the Honda dealer just about every other day, trying to test drive one, but every time they got one in, they sold it before I could drive it. I finally talked my mom (who's in her late 30's) into going up to the dealership & we got lucky. Once she drove it, she realized why I had to have one. She liked it so much, she traded my car & her '98 Explorer for a red one & a blue one (making them our 5th & 6th Hondas).

The sticker price on the car was around $17,000. After adding a high wing, ground effects, & everything else possible, the walk-out price was around $19,500.

Good things about the car:

-it handles really good, especially with 17" rims
-there are plenty of modifications for the car that make it even more fun to drive. I've raced quite a few Preludes, Integras, Mustangs, & Camaros. They're not expecting that much speed from a little 4-cylinder, but the car has proven that you can't judge a book by it's cover.
-it isn't a mini-van or anything, so you can't expect too much interior room, but there's plenty of it for me & my son

A few downfalls of the car:

-they need to make the cup holders a little taller....if you put a McDonald's cup in it, the cup falls over
-the moonroof buttons aren't illuminated so it's hard to find them at night
-the synchros went out in 5th gear, which the dealership told me has been a problem in the Si's. They replaced it with no problem & I haven't had a problem with it since.

Overall, the Si is the best car for the price & it's good for everybody, no matter how young or old.
