Honda Civic (2010 and older) Midsize | Compact

Honda Civic (2010 and older) Midsize | Compact

DESCRIPTION

The Civic is Honda’s compact car that is offered in sedan and coupe versions. First introduced as a small, inexpensive hatchback in 1972, the Civic has increased in size during its lifetime while continuing to offer excellent fuel economy. The entire Civic line was all-new for 2006.

The basic Civic is available as a sedan and coupe and comes in several trims: DX, DX-VP, LX-S, EX and EX-L. The Civic SI, the performance-oriented trim, offers 57 more horsepower than the base model, a few more performance options and a starting price of around $7,000 more than the base Civic.

The Civic also comes in two eco-friendly options: the Honda Civic Hybrid, which is reviewed separately, and the GX, a hybrid alternative that runs on Compressed Natural Gas. Unfortunately the GX is only sold in California (and other states that have accepted California's Zero-Emission Vehicle regulations). It costs about $10,000 more than a base Civic.

Strength:

gas mileage, great turns, reliable.. Great for college students. There is many after market parts out there for the Civic.

Weakness:

shifting through gears are a bit bumpy, it sucks at passing had a few close calls, kicks in finally after 55 MPH. Makes noises sometimes in the doors, and road noise on freeway. Oh I can't forget "THE CUP HOLDERS SUCK"!!!!! Every damn turn a water bottle will fall out. The sheet metal on the car is very thin, it dents and dings easy, I have a little tiny ding in it from a little rock on the road.

I got this car in 2000 in July, almost a year. It's a practical car for college students, gas mileage is great. I think it's slow, the way it shifts through the gears sucks and can feel it, bumpy shifting. It's an automatic, I would have gotten the manual trany but it wasn't up to me. Yeah I do agree with the others that have submitted a review that the civic makes noises. When the wind blows the doors make this clicking noise, I'm like what the hell is that, it only has almost 10,000 miles on it and it makes noises, the sun roof makes a slight clicking noise... HUm, I just turn up the music, and I can't hear a thing. Don't get me wrong I like my car, just sometimes it pisses me off. I wash it every week because of all the bugs. I think Nissan's are a much better car, you should get one.... If you can maybe it would be a better choice to get a Honda Civic Si, or just get a civic with a manual transmission, more room to play. Trust me auto's are not that great...

Strength:

Worth the price overall. New look and the V-Tech engine. Great fuel economy.

Weakness:

I agree on the too-noisy on the highway part. Also, I find it bounds a lot, not much of a driving comfort. Exterior -- I don't quite like the design of the rear.

This is my first Civiv. Main reason I bought Civic because of its fuel economy. It's still considered very realiable for this price-range of car. Plus, I like the new sporty look of the new model. I like sedan, but I'll hold on the thought for later. This is certainly a great student car. Smoothing shifting and I really prefered the 5 speed. For some reason, I think Honda isn't that realiable when it comes to Automatic. I hope this car will last me for many many years until I have enough money to get a Lexus or a toyota SUV. I am not ashamed to say I like Toyota much more better. However, I could only afford Civic at this point of life.

Strength:

Cheap, reliable so far.....

Weakness:

Overall lack of power, the price of the dealer to service it is almost as bad as my porsches.

After moving from Sunny SoCal to Wisconsin I'd have to say the first thing I noticed was that my 1996 Porsche 911 C4S gets ALOT more looks then it used to. Must be because not many people have nice supercars out here :). However no longer could I use my 87' porsche 944T (951) as my daily driver because of the long Wisconsin winters so I needed a new car. In comes my Honda, after hearing all this great stuff about Honda's reliability I was really expecting alot more then I got. Granted I only used this car for one winter but the problems It gave me will not be solved by money+time.
1.) It's no wonder this car is so reliable, I mean 4cyl. At intersections I like to do fun to 25 but within about a week of my ownership I tried this and the stupid thing sputtered and stopped. I couldn't believe it, brand new car and you can't even stamp it down? It's done this more than once. So anyways I bought it back to the dealership and the guy there was a complete *** about it.
2.) "Well sir this car isn't meant for racing." Then I told him to look at it and 2 days later it came back, still wouldn't accelerate for * (*=no swearing allowed hehe). (And still sputters out.)
3.) Now since I'm using this car for winter it gets HORRID gas mileage, maybe 200-275 miles on a full tank which isn't very great for a car with 4cyl. It has a 13 gallon tank btw. This means it gets about the same miles per gallon as my 944T on a bad week.
4.) The lack of abs is simply horrid I thought that that was standard on like every new car and didn't even bother to look for it I mean come on it's the 21'st century abs has been out like 14 years now.
5.)115 horsepower! boy was I wrong to think this could get through the snow.
6.) The dealer service prices at Hobbs are worse then the local porsche dealer for the same job!
Anyways to culminate my story and make you understand why I am so pissed the lack of abs brakes led to the car not stopping straight and my sliding into a parked car on an icy road. I was going about 25-30mph(tops) and the car has snow tires on it! The whole front end was caved in but luckily the air bag deployed. Tada at least something worked!
Now maybe my review is a little unfair but I've never used it under good conditions so I wouldn't know. I'm just gonna assume its the same piece of **** Honda under different conditions. I sold my Honda for 7000 to a friend after it was repaired, let him deal with the hassle.

Strength:

There are very few strengths. The car has a nice apperance, but don't let that mislead you.

Weakness:

The engine is falling apart. They are easy to break into. The dealerships aren't helpful and the maintenance work is overpriced.

I have owned my Honda for three years and I am ready to get rid of it. It has only caused me trouble. Not only is the car falling apart, but the dealerships are not doing their job. The dealerships can't seem to fix anything. The engine light is always going and now it is stalling (no one can seem to find out what is wrong). If you live in a major city DO NOT BUY THIS CAR. Mine have been broken into twice. Honda Civics' are extremely easy to break into (I've had mine broken into twice). Thieves want the airbags.

problems??? hahahahha no such thing! No mods for it yet, but just wait what the future will bring!

18200 - for EX Black Sedan with 1.7l 4cyl VTEC-E "which will have alot of potential in the future", all the upgrades including (15" Si Alloys, CXT 'black and grey' leather interior, Cd player, a sound system that made my friend cry when he noticed it sounds better than his Audi A4 2.8's stock radio. (hehe pretty sad for him), huge trunk, more interior space and a stiff suspension that makes you want to cut every corner while rev.g at 7000+rpm = ). All that for 18200? Just the leather and the alloy wheel where supposed to cost 2500, it's incredible where 3 hours of fighting over prices will take you.. = ) secret = "become the car seller's best friend" - check out 2k1civic.com.

Strength:

Weakness:

Howling wind noise coming from drivers side door!

Great little car! More room than you'd think from the outside. It's my third Honda and like all the rest, it runs like a fine sewing machine! Love the interior layout and ergonomics. Haven't had it long enough to get true gas mileage, but it's averaging around 32 to 35 with only 800 miles on it.

After driving the car for the first week, we noticed a howling noise coming from somewhere at freeway speeds. Thought it was a defective transmission or something? As I took it up from 60 to 80mph, it seem to come and go at times. After several cruises down the freeway, we determined it was coming from outside the drivers door. I cracked the drivers window a little bit and it disappeared, closed it and it reappeared. Went to the dealer and asked if any others have complained about this problem, the service rider said YES! Evidently many are experiencing the same problem. It appears Honda has made an engineering mistake with the new Civic door frame! If others are having this problem, call Honda and let them know the word is out, hopefully they will do something about it. Otherwise, I love the car! A 4 overall because of this problem.

Strength:

Economic.
Killer looks. The 92-95 generation still have the best styling for me.
Good handling.
Perfect on freeways.

Weakness:

- Rattle and noises on the suspension (not so annoying if you have a good stereo)
- Rattle and noises on the back lid that covers the baggage space.

Here in Brazil, we pay very high for new cars calles "popular cars".
These are cars with 1.0 (1000cc, 55-60cv) engines, totally nude cars.
They don´t have A/C, power-steering, etc. If you want this you have to pay
much more.
So, the used asian cars are the most cost-effective cars here!

Model Reviewed: LX 4-door (US)

Strength:

Smooth, quiet ride, for an economy car. No rattles yet with 133,000 miles. 6 1/2 inch speakers fit in the front doors without modification. The most comfortable front seats I've had in any Honda. High quality upohlstry in the LX version. Dashboard, console, and door panels don't look or feel cheap. Handles nicely, without much leaning. GREAT fuel economy. The small engine revs easily, quickly, and very smoothly for more horsepower when you need it. Very good shifter and clutch. The body feels very solid. An overall very pleasant car to run around in, and it hustles without much drama when you ask it to.

Weakness:

The AC feels weak (but it's 9 years old and may need service) and greatly affects low RPM performance. Small, narrow 13 inch tires, but I'll change that soon enough. The small engine lacks torque, so you need to rev high to get much horsepower. Two tiny horn buttons, instead of pressing in the middle of the wheel (A traditional honda flaw, I think.) Back windows don't roll down all the way anymore for '92.

It's going in for service today for occasional missing/hesitation with check engine light on (The reason my sister gave it to me is because she didn't want to deal with the mechanics or dealer.) I hope they figure it out the first time. Otherwise, this car is in great shape.

This is my second favorite car that I've owned yet, and I've had lots of different cars, including a very nice, near mint condition '92 Maxima SE, and two Celicas. The only one I liked better was my '89 Accord LXi 2-door 5-spd. The fact that this car was free to me helps. The Civic matches the practical, green side of my personality perfectly. I drive a lot, so mileage is important to me, and I live an inner-city neighborhood, so having a cheap car that's easy to park on the street is nice. I don't worry about other people scratching my bumpers while they're parking. My Maxima was a constant worry to leave on the street. This is a very pleasant car to gently cruise around the lake, and while it's not very powerful, and is limited by it's small tires, it can be very fun to drive quickly. It takes to high engine RPMs without any bad sounds or vibrations to tell you that it really doesn't want to go that fast. The free-revving engine, shifter, clutch, fine handling, excellent fuel economy, high quality interior, and well controlled, quiet ride all add up. Civics are the best economy cars out there, bar none!

Similar Products Used:

I've owned too many cars to list em' all. Most recently, an '87 Accord LX 4-door Auto, and an '89 Civic LX 5 speed. My newer Civic compares favorably to both of these older cars in most ways. I prefered the way the '89 Civic handled, and the lightness of the power steering in both the other cars ("Overboosted" steering as some reviewers call it, makes a car feel more nimble in the city, IMO), but the '92 Civic is better in almost every other way. The '92 Civic has all the same major features as the '87 Accord, ie, power windows, locks, cruise, and AC, but it lacks such niceties as a low fuel light, headlights-on chime, lighted passenger mirror, glove compartment light, and left foot rest. Then again, this is a svelte little Civic($), not a big fat Accord($$).

Strength:

Mileage, interior and exterior looks.

Weakness:

Just about all that lies below the surface (you can't judge a book by its cover): mechanical quality in general, suspension, lots of interior noise (a loud roar over some road surfaces).

This is my fifth and LAST Honda (pay attention Honda, there are many more out there just like me, each with at least 15-20 potential referrals - scroll down...). A NOTE TO HONDA EXECUTIVES: you can't rest on your past accomplishments. At the rate you're going, Honda sales will be way down in 2-3 years. Remember, you read it here first!

Three out of the five Hondas I've owned since 1984 (including this one) have had problems with the suspension. This one sits lower on the driver's side and the front end issues a loud clunk when turning the steering wheel while backing up. The two Hondas that didn't have any problems were built in Japan. One of these, a 1990 Prelude SI, was in the family for 10 years and driven all over the USA, Europe and Central America with no problems whatsoever. The three that had problems (including this one) were built in Canada and Ohio. Buy American? Hey, that's great for rich folks who can replace a car at will but what about us po folk who must keep a car for years?

This car rates in the bottom 40% of the cars I've owned. I actually was more satisfied with a 1974 Chevrolet Vega I once had.
