Model Reviewed: Del Sol DOC-VTEC

Strength:

There isn't a single negative to sound off about with this car. I can't deliver enough accolades or kudos for this REAL, not a wannabe, sports car. Mine is strictly stock right now but I am in the process of installing a Kaminari KTR wing. The wing is currently being air brushed mural. This car has it all and Honda just never got this thing into peak production like the Miata caught on from Mazda. I love the way the engine turns from a whine @ 5500 RPM's to a throaty growl up to the 8,000 RED line. The 160 horses push this light weight car quickly but the aero-dynamics make it squat to the ground like super glue. My Z-28 Camaro had glass "T" roof inserts but they were a bear to remove and store in the special trunk bags that Chevy had for them. The roof of my Del Sol weighs a mere 27 pounds and the engineers at Honda made a special storage rack for it in the trunk of the car. It locks into place and wouldn't become a loose missile if struck in the rear end by another vehicle. The 5 speed gear box is spaced like a performance car should be. The suspension, steering, and disc brakes all around leave nothing to be desired in this car. The Honda 2000S are gorgeous but this Del Sol is bound to be a classic....Paul

Weakness:

This car is not well suited for large people of the species. It sets low to the ground and it there is only ample seating for two people. This car has cruise control, tilt wheel, power windows and mirrors. Nice, but unecessary in a SPORTS car. The engine is louder than most cars due to it's high revs and it's attempt to get to the variable timing on the dual cams. The factory driving lights are not bright enough and you may want to go to PIA or another manufacturer to have better style and lighting.

I purchased this car used, with 86,000 miles on it, about six weeks ago for $8,000. It looks and drives like a new car. It was in immaculate shape and the engine is as tight today as when shipped from the factory! I understand that the new Honda 2000S is going for $32,000 and that because of waiting lists, people are paying $10,000 over sticker price to get one of those babies. For reliable transportation with a flare of fun driving I highly recommend the Del Sol to anyone of the stature and size to enjoy it.

Similar Products Used:

I've owned MG midgets, Triumph Spitfires, and Austin Healey Sprites. All of them were fun cars to drive but they fell far short with the Del Sols VTEC engine and performance.

Strength:

The crx del sol is a very attractive car which turns heads to this day.Its quite fast and handles beautifully. Its economical in all respects and if you find one that has been treated well you are guaranteed reliability whatever its age .I bought mine with 40,000 miles on the clock and she drives excellently.

Weakness:

The roof (as it is convertable) can rattle when driving at high speeds. You should be aware of its blind spot as it is considerable compared to other cars.Car thieves love these cars.

If you have the means i highly recomend picking up one of these babies. They are great fun to drive and they look great. All in all the Honda crx del sol is a brilliant car.

Strength:

The look!
The color: samba green metallic!
The open roof (electric in Japan!)
The driving:Just like driving on rails
The space: lots of leg space for a 190cm person
Finally bought it, because I always wanted it.

Weakness:

With automatic transmission, the electric roof (weight!) and aircon, there isn't much power left, even with the larger 155hp engine :(. But without these extras, I wouldn't drive it in a city like Tokyo. So it's ok, because you can't go fast here anyway ;).

Paid 3 years ago $8000, car was (and still is) in exellent condition, only 32000 miles back than.
Love that car, it is our second car , just for fun!
Wouldn't trade it in even for a Porsche Boxter.

Strength:

very nimble handling, exceptionally well balanced car, great gas mileage, huge aftermarket following.

Weakness:

i have the 127hp sohc vtec model, it seems as if you have to run the engine up to 5000rpms just to get any guts out of it. my roof squeeks like crazy if you hit bumps and it leaks whenever it rains, but overall not bad for a car with 130000miles+

I found my DelSol used fronm its original owner, alady in her late 20s. It had been severly neglected and needed some tlc, but I picked it up for $3400. If you find one I would highly recomend buying the dohc model. but overall I love my car and have no plans of ever getting rid of it

Strength:

Handling- It's stock and handles about the same as a 91 Prelude Si.

If you go with the vtec(160hp),which i wish i had, it has tremendous power because of the size and weight. 160 hp is a lot for as small and light a car that it is. Mine only has 106hp and feels great. Got to be the most fun 106hp car on the planet.

The trunk is huge for a car it's size. have to see it to believe it.

Lot's of storage space in the cab as well. There's a storage compartment behind each seat in addition to the glove box.

The removeable hard top only takes thirty seconds to remove and put it on its shelf in the trunk. Allows you to store the top without losing any of the huge amount of trunk space.

42mpg highway/30mpg city

I've probably left some stuff out

Weakness:

The "S" version only comes with 13" wheels.

Sun visors are kind of a joke.

Cup holders could be improved, but hey, the prelude doesn't even have cup holders.

Visibility could be tough for those shorter than 5'8"

Ever since I turned old enough to drive four years ago, Honda Delsols have caught my eye. When I bought one last summer, and started driving it, it was just as sweet as i hoped and thought it would be.

It's a 93. I paid high book for it, which it was worth due to the mint condition and the lack of miles put on it. It was the previous owner's summer automobile. Finding a 93 with 25,000 miles was unbelievable. I've haven't done much to upgrade, because it doesn't need it.

I don't believe i'll ever get tired of driving it. As far as i'm concerned it's the best looking car honda has ever made.

They don't make them anymore and i don't know why. they've never had any problems at all. Consumer report rated it just as high as the accord.

If you have a chance to drive one, take it. If you find one in good shape for sale, don't pass it up.

A sweet ride. Especially for a teenager looking to turn some heads.

The price makes it the best value on the planet.

Strength:

To me the best aspect of the car is it's looks!! It is an eye catcher!! This roadster is small, fun and very fast. I also love its factory suspension system. It's tight.

I own a 95 del Sol Si. It has a 1.6 SOHC VTECH 125 horsepower engine, which seems small but really isn't du to the fact it is a very small and has a light curb weight. My is all factory original. It has 15' rims, a very cool looking spoiler, and the coolest looking intirior ever. It has very sporty looking gauges, double toned water-prof bucket seats. The stereo has a "lid" to it that stores the radio. There is also two storage departments behind the seats in addition to the glove department. The bucket seats are low to the ground and hold you in place in curves at high speed. I drive a 5-speed manual trans. (how else could you drive a roadster) and it has a very tight but not hard clutch which allows fast shifting. My favorite part of the car is it's interior.
95' was the last year they made the auxiliary (fog) lights, which to me are extremly rad. The removable top comes out in 10 sec. and is stored in a reck built in the trunk. This rack was the best invention ever. It lets you store the roof and still acess the trunk which is pretty bigg for a car this size. In the summer it's a fun convertible and in the winter it's a hard-top! Who can beat that? And to add to the fun, the top comes off and the rear window rows down for fresh breeze to come in!!
It handles like a dream. Great engine, awesome suspension, and awesome gear-shifting!! It's the most fun you will ever have!! They are great looking cars for a great price, but again they are Honda's, what else could you expect!!

I believe there is nothing like it out there, being a convertible and a hard-top. I find it very unique. The closest to it is the Miata, but there is simply no comparison!!

its a beautiful car that turns heads everywhere with the proper adjustments. better rims makes the car easily look like a brand new $30,000 sports car. the styling is outstanding and the convertable is amazing in the summer months. it is by far the fastest stock civic based car produced and can be upgraded easily.
