Model Reviewed: Base SE 5-Spd

Strength:

-looks tasteful/elegant/aggressive all at once
-good power
-handling
-surprisingly practical/comfortable
-SE package is a good value
-stealthy [to cops], although Electron Blue color may take away from this factor

Weakness:

-it's no V8/Turbo if acceleration is purely what you're interested in

Great flashy car, especially in Electron Blue. I'll admit the number of Electron Blue Civics running around are annoying, but it's a whole new feeling seeing it on a higher-classed Prelude. Gets affectionate glances from regular Joes and Janes walking down the street. I really like the low, wide stance the Prelude has. The car seems quick to encourage riceboys to toy with me on the road, and after my break-in period, it's going to be fun (although I know it won't be as capable in straight line acceleration as my S70 T5). The SE package in Canada is a great value, adds Type-SH rims, a beautiful leather interior with perforated leather seats, an attractive carbon-fibre dash trim for the audio panel and the armrests, and a Type-SH style leather wrapped manual shift knob. I also added the OEM underbody spoiler kit and the rear spoiler, and the car looks beautiful. Getting the SportShift is missing the point of this machine. I haven't had the chance to truly let the engine rip yet, but the acceleration is adequate below the VTEC range, and from that one time I ventured into VTEC territory, it was "good". I am not expecting the turbo-rush I get from the S70 T5, so I am not sure which word to use to describe the VTEC, but it surprised me. I'm glad I didn't get the Celica GT-S, after reading some of the horror stories (like the rattling plastic interior) on that portion of the CarReview.com site. Besides, the Celica's look hasn't really grown on me; I think it looks nice from the front but not from any other angle. I also considered the Integra Type-R, but the statement you read so much is true -- the Prelude is a lot more practical and comfortable in daily driving, and the straight-line acceleration is only slightly slower, with equal if not better handling.

Strength:

Stong performance, reliability and solid handling in all weather conditions. I passed many an SUV during Huricane Floyd and made it hom so sweat. Huge sunroof, makes you feel like your in a convertable when fully open, cool pop-up head lights too

Weakness:

The older ones (like mine) rust out from the inside, so not even a re-paint will help the problem. I'll soon be driving a frame with 4 wheels and an engine! Forget the back seat. Auto Transmission slugish and clunky when it shifts, but it's an old car. Power antenna burned out

My car is an '89 SI model with a 2.0 engine, fuel injected, with automatic trans. I bought the car in '98 with 95,000 miles on it and I now have 160,500+ miles running strong. I have never ever owned a more durable car! Unfortunatly the car was abused and not very well mainrained when I got it, so I can't hold that against the manufacturer. I had to sink about $4000 into-it to bring it back to life. The front end was in the worst condition. (I needed a new axle, springs, upper and lower control arms, tires & brakes) I also needed an exhaust system, a power steering pressure line, altenater, horns, a new battery and a new timing belt. But since I've been maintaining the car with regular oil changes and tune-ups and using genuine honda parts, it has been running like new. My engine is in excellent original condition with the original transnission. I put 25,000+ miles on it per year.
The car handles very well, The engine has an abundance of power, (I drive hard) no strange noises or rattling. I get 22 to 24 mpg, Starts up with one turn of the key in all weather, unless you let it sit for 3 or more days...Then you have to crank it over a few times when it's cold out. But hey, this car is 12 years old and has 3 times the milage of any other car I've owned so I'm not complaining.
I have power windows, power sunroof and power mirrors, no problems yet with those items. Has never leaked or burned a drop of oil! You must remember to maintain this car and it will last forever.

VTEC Engine, ATTS system, Looks, Reliability

Weakness:

Front headlights, Factory Bridgestone Potenza RE92 tires

Excellent superb car. I love this car. I bought the car brand new back in March 1997 and I have so much fun driving this car. The ATTS really impress me so much. The car handles beautifully. I have 95,000 miles and the engine is still running strong. My car is a daily driving and race it at the track on the weekend. I really love the VTEC engine. I smoked so many V6 and V8 out there.

Strength:

Performance, High-Quality Switchgear, Looks, Paint (hard to maintain, but nice color!), Handling

Weakness:

It feels like you're sitting in a hole, definitely not for the tall crowd; needs premium fuel; Paint chips easily

I love this car! I just bought it and now I really know the difference between an American Honda and a Japanese Honda. I also have a 2000 V6 Accord and this Prelude is faster, has better build quality, and probably more reliable than my Accord (which needed a new transmission after only 11K miles!). Not to say that my Accord is bad, it is a very good car and I don't anticipate any more problems. But this Prelude is beautiful. Especially in the white, a shade which is usually reserved for Acura's. I bought it used, but very clean and with good miles. If you scroll down this page and read the moron raving about the Hyundai, just laugh and skip to the next one. He wouldn't know what a Prelude was if it came in the mail!

Similar Products Used:

2000 Accord V6 - Although the Accord has more torque, the Prelude is jumpier off the line.

2001 Celica GTS - A friend of mine is a hardcore Toyota fan and I sent him back to the drawing board when he raced my Prelude.

1997 Passat GLX VR6 - The VR6 is FLAWLESS! It is a different class of car, so it really isn't comparable. But if you can find a clean '97 VR6, do not pass it up!

Hyndai Tiburon - I smoked one on the way home from the dealer, it was quite fun.

When i looked at this car i thougt wow! it had alloy wheels nice metallic blue color stick shift dual exhaust! it looks like a new car! When i drove it was even better! 160 hp feels like 200! the sound system is awesome now that i put a cd player in it, the speakers are fine! this car only had 23000 miles on it when i bought it! When i tell people it is a 92 they think o just some boxy thing! then when they see it they say what i thought you said 92 not brand new!

I really love the style of this car. My car's engine is great, even at 199,000 miles. Starts every time, even in the colds months of winter. Still runs like new. Enough power for me.

Weakness:

Nothing.

I really love the 1985-1987 Si model. Everyday I can't wait to drive my 86 Honda Prelude 2.0 Si. I just love my car. Like I mention above, there's 199,000 miles on it. And it still runs very good. I get good gas milage on it. I would recommend this car to anybody who wants an old school sport car that won't make you go broke if yo buy it. Anybody who wants to talk about Preludes can e-mail me.

Strength:

This is a fast car. I love the way it picks up and handles at high speeds. It also looks so cute. The front seats are very comfortable and the sun roof is a blast. At 226,000 miles it is still a pleasure to drive.

Weakness:

*The trunk and driver's side window leak.
*There is a hidden fuel filter in the gas tank that got clogged and stranded me in the middle of the Nevada dessert on a weekend.
*It has developed a chugging problem that only happens occasionally, but makes it hard to drive (the RPM's surge while the gas pedal is steady)
*Electrical problems are popping up, ie. speedometer only works when the parking brake light is on and the hazzard lights will come on but wont go off.
*I have worn out the clutch with my crazy fast driving.
*The engine is wearing out and smokes a lot when you first start it up in the morning.
*The parts are expensive - $100 for a rotor & $75 for rebuilt calipers.
*The Utah winters are wrecking havic on the beautiful black paint and there is a litte rust on the back fenders.
*No other problems, this is a very realiable car, the 226,000 miles proves it.

I would reccomend this car to families of 2 who want a fun fast, fairly inexpensive sports car.
