Strength:

Engine, Handling, overall driving enjoyment, cockpit seating, and pretty much everything else- this is truly an outstanding car

Weakness:

Headliner rattles when cold outside and headroom leaves a little to be desired

If you imagine yourself with a car with style, refinement, and pure driving pleasure, this may be your car. I thought about the new Celica (too gaudy and just didnt do it for me) Civic Si (don't want to be mistaken for a high school kid anymore, needed more refinement) and a couple others but the Prelude is the total package -- I love to drive- and this car is the perfect food for my hunger.

This car is by far the best in its class. It has great power, and handling. It looks great too.

Weakness:

None

I love this car. I baby more than the first owner did and will continue do baby it for as long as I live. It is very fast when you want it to be and has enough low end power you don't always have to rev it up, but you can if you want to and it likes it. I have beaten many cars in my Prelude including a 5.0 mustang, firebirds, Civics, Accords, and many more. This car is great. Just don't put more than two people in it the back seats are for looks only.

Strength:

Man nothing about this car is good!

Weakness:

ok i really dont know where to begin describing this piece of junk for about 30,000. First of all, what kind of a bs is Honda playing on us, charging 30k for this piece of junk! arent new cars supposed to be powerful and smooth??? well i bought mine last week and this mess is a junk! I should have definetely bought the new Tiburon, where all you pay is 15,000 (half of a lude) for leather, sun roof, great shifting and mean power, great premium sound system, nice smooth ride, low tone muffler, and tons more!. Who has seen a car where you have to pay for such basic accessories such as sunroof, cup holders, leather, alloy wheels, when you are paying 30grand!!! this is insane waste of money! the vtec engine is not all that powerful and i think a tiburon would definitely smoke it. (if you dont think so, go test drive one and you will know what i know). The design is too blocky, and stiff and the interior rattles too much! the back seat construction is very poorly done and the brakes failed on me already and i have had this car for 10 days!!!! the shifting of 5 speed is too rough and the car jerks when you shift up. And i have been driving stick for 10 years so i know what a bad manual transmission is. Please if you are buying a car, dont buy this 100% lemon. Prelude is a lemon!

Honda Preludes are a fraud! do not get tricked into buying this lemon for the fact that it has a Vtec engine. The vtec is a fraud also. this mess, i dont know what to do with. i wanna get rid of this car fast and buy me a tiburon. If you are interested in buying my prelude, email me at:
iamthascmaster@aol.com ; i only have 200 miles on my prelude. i will sell it cheap, about 15,000 dollars, half of what i paid. I hate this junk!!!!

also have testdrove a celica and celicas are wonderful too

Model Reviewed: Honda Prelude 5 speed

Strength:

Its a Honda, handling, sweet VTEC engine.

Weakness:

Lack of options, headroom, cupholder placement, delicate skin, quality issues on MINE.

Prior to buying my Prelude, I owned a '91 Honda CRX. The CRX was the best car I have ever owned, but it was 8 years old and time to purchase something new.

When I bought the CRX I wasn't making a lot of money and in my 20's, now in my late-30's, I decided to buy something a bit more expensive and sophisticated. Having had great experience' with Honda's (my 4th), I decided to stick with a good thing.

I looked @ the Accord Coupe, but decided it was too popular. Honda made the bad decision to discontinue the CRX, so the Prelude was my only real choice outside of an Integra, which we already own (a '96 GSR).

I bought a base model Prelude with a 5 speed tranny because I wanted the extra 5 horses the manual has over the auto (200 vs. 195 bhp). I also didn't want the trick suspension the Type SH comes with.

I guess I bought this car too late in life. No doubt about it, it is a great car to own, if your about 22, single and short. Living in a large city (Houston) with dreadful traffic, the 5 speed (though sweet) has been a poor choice. In the City, I rarely get out of 3rd gear because of the heavy traffic, so the constant shifting and clutch work grows tiresome. Quickly.

Inside, the front seats are comfortable (firm & supportive)in a grippy/sturdy black fabric. You have a choice of interior colors as long as you like black.

Switch gear and instruments are clear and have that great "quality" feel to them.

Considering the price of this car, it would be nice to have had automatic climate control(which you can get it in an Accord Coupe!). The air conditioning and heat perform well, although the switchgear design is an older looking slider design vs knobs.

Getting into and out of the car isn't easy for my 39 year old body. The drivers seat comes with a manual height adjuster, which I have found to be useless since headroom is lacking no matter how I adjust the seat.

With the 5 speed, if you have anything other than a small can in the cup holder(s), the drink will be in the way of shifting the gears. I always end up putting the drink between my legs!

The back seat is not as bad as your told in most reviews (as long as your under 5'8). Getting in and out of it is a chore, but the front passenger seat slides forward to allow easier entry. There is even 1 cup holder back there!

The base stereo CD sounds great to me!

The option list for this car is limited. It comes standard with what I consider the basic "luxury" items, power windows, locks, mirrors, and moonroof. However, it would have been nice to have the option of getting leather, the previously mentioned automatic climate control, a garage door opener in the visor and side airbags (all of which are available on the less expensive Accord and Accord Coupe), but you don't have the ability to order any of these + it would probably push the car into the 30's in price!

Truck space is good (considering) and you can lay the back seat down providing even more room.

Handling is this cars forte. Its ride is above par for a small sporty car, and it feels stable on most road surfaces. Road noise is fairly limited and much less than in our Integra.

I like the exterior design. I love the front end design, especially the headlights. Side profile is good too, its low and sleek and the alloy wheels are sharp (not hard to clean either)! The rear view is the exterior's let down. Its not ugly, just really plain.

The exterior sheet metal FEELS very delicate. I am careful not to park it near other cars for fear of getting door dings. The paint is easily marred by rocks, etc..

A few quality issues have surprised me with my car. The weather stripping around the windshield is constantly coming out of place. I have taken it to the dealer on more than one occasion. All they do is put tape on it and let it sit in the sun, which never works for long.

My "H" on the back trunk feels like it could fall off @ any minute.

It rattles! Rattles began cropping up shortly after I bought it. This is the first Honda I have ever owned that has rattled this bad. I have taken it back to the dealer three times, first they oiled the moonroof gear, then attempted to tighten the PLASTIC (on a 25k car!)roof liner. Last time, they changed the back left strut. Then, a similar sound began coming from the right rear! Back to the shop it went and a right coil was replaced. All of this has been under warranty and I have a great dealer to work with.

These are all minor nit picks that have added up to a somewhat less than stellar ownership experience to date in the 25 months since I bought the car off the dealer lot.

Who should buy this car? If your young and your parents can afford one for you...buy it. If your looking for something a bit more sophisticated, I would recommend the new Acura 3.2 CL, Type S or or Accord Coupe V6 EX.

Strength:

Too much to list. Excellent steering, handling and refinement. Good acceleration. Car can carve through twisty roads like a surgeon's scalpel. Bullet-proof reliability. My car has 108k miles and to date have had no unnecessary repairs except a defective ATTS module (replaced under warranty). Best of both worlds: Car is silent/vibration-free at idle like an Accord, but screams like a race car once VTEC kicks in.

Weakness:

A bit expensive (I bought when it first came out). Very plain-looking and tight-space interior. Luckily my car had a burl wood interior and dealer-installed leather which made it look much more luxurious. Impossible to keep doors from being dinged ($65 a pop to remove. Ocassional rattles from the roof liner.

I whole-heartedly recommend the Prelude to anyone in the market for a high-performance coupe with high levels of refinement and Honda bulletproof reliability. The car is a vibration-free at idle today as the first day I bought it. I've upgraded the suspension and wheels on the car and have yet to come anywhere near the car's handling limits. This is not a car for someone with a family given the limited trunk and rear seat room. However, if you're in the market for sports car, this is the best one out there under $30K.

Similar Products Used:

Honda Civic SI - too many out there. Loud and less horsepower
Integra Type R - excellent handling and acceleration, but too much racer and not very refined.

Absolutely awesome body style. 9 years old now and still people think its brand spankin new. I love the interior- I'm a college student, and if we need to cram four people or more in there, then it gets done. No one complains about those backseats. I have one person that ends up riding back there a few times a week who is at least 6 feet tall. (he does have to take his shoes off though, to get his feet it. The power that this baby packs is insane for only 4 cyl! I LOVE IT. Bein first at a stoplight is one of the highlights of the driving experience. ahha.. The stock alloy wheels on this car are great-they're sweet. I love the sunroof. i love the whole style of the car, inside and out. All the seats in the car are comfy as heck-the sides hold ya in, when you're haulin butt around town!!! The HANDLING is SUPERIOR to anything out there

Weakness:

Don't live out in the country-the gravel and potholes will hurt ya something fierce. I've had lots of knicks in the paint since i got it. Thats with any car though. Just be careful out on the back roads.

Overall, this car is well worth every cent. I couldn't care less about the cup holder or rear seat factors. I really like the huge console between the seats. The glove box is cool because all you can put in there is the insurance verification. There's no trouble finiding it when the cops pull ya over. My car's Milano Red. I have YET to be stopped for speeding or anything else. I was warned about having a red sports car and mixin that with cops. I've been stopped in all my other cars, and they were old and wimpy...
If you get a chance, go test drive one of these babies. The body will lure you in, and the power it packs will get ya hooked.

It's awsome to drive with plenty of power and I just love the shape. Plenty of car for your money. As is the 80's, it was the Sports Car of Honda. If you can't afford an S2000, then this is the next Best Thing.

Weakness:

No VTEC in 1988.

I have had a 1988 S 4WS for 5 Years and still love to drive it. (See it here)

Since it's a Sports car, you do have a redundant Rear Seat but that can be taken car of by taking it out and installing some subs.

Will be staying with the Prelude and will get a 4th or 5th gen.
